A wing and a prayer

60

Update, 12:50 p.m.: Thomas Pock cleared waivers and will report to Hartford.

Continuing from before….

  • Jason Strudwick is in at left wing with Blair Betts and Colton Orr, while Ryan Hollweg will likely play the right side with Brandon Dubinsky and Nigel Dawes. Tom Renney said the decision to not bring anyone up was in part to get Strudwick some ice time, but also a reflection of what he expects from the Devils (one can assume this means a gritty fourth line). That said, Renney didn’t rule out bringing someone up for Saturday since Ryan Callahan is still unlikely.

Meanwhile, while Strudwick has practiced at forward this season — remember his day alongside Jagr a few weeks back? — he hasn’t played the position in a game since his first stint with the Rangers in 2005-06.

But he’s obviously a quick learner. Though he was raised a defenseman, Strudwick was tabbed midway through a game in Vancouver a decade ago and has played sporadically ever since. “I hadn’t played forward since I was five and all of a sudden I’m 24 and they said, ‘You want to play wing?'”

His expectations for tonight are obviously to keep things simple. “But who knows, you might score a goal,” he said.

The way things are going, I’m going to count on that not happening.

  • The mysterious goalie was Chad Killam, a four-year player at Manhattanville and a former teammate of Rangers’ staffer Myles Fee. Talk about trying to boost a struggling team’s confidence: Killam said that while he’s been coaching youth hockey and the goalies at Manhattanville since he graduated in 2004, he hasn’t strapped on the pads since college. Given that, he did decently enough today, but obviously saw plenty of rubber behind him.
  • According to Renney, the reason Thomas Pock was sent down was to get him playing, even if it meant the risk of losing him to waivers. More in a bit on whether the player cleared or not…
  • Sean Avery was his usual animated itself after an impressive skate with 15 teammates today — Jagr skated briefly, but no Shanahanh, Drury, Gomez or Lundqvist — and said he has Monday targeted as a comeback. I asked him if he was serious given Renney’s reservations about rushing the player back too soon. “But you saw it,” he said. “I’m close.” Maybe so, but Avery still hasn’t been exposed to contact. He was hoping for that tomorrow, but whether Renney goes along is another story. I still think he has to wait until a week from Saturday before he plays.

    More later…

    1. SAM Renney & Sather HAVE to called out on this decision. There is NO way they are right playing Strudwick over Pock for the Devil game. They need OFFENSE! Pock could have been waived tomorrow.

    2. With all this sitting I think Avery is about to explode!
Tonight the goal scoring prowess of Eggwegg is going to be on full display.
      Sweet!

    3. How many roster spots need to be taken up by “gritty” guys who can’t score? If both Hollweg and Orr are incapable of defending their teammates, then neither one should be dressing, because god knows they won’t score.

    4. Never mind Pock or Strudwick, there is no way a defenseman should be playing as a forward given the Rangers inability to score. If you want a physical player in the lineup then why not call up a Dane Byers, Hugh Jessiman or Greg Moore?

    5. I think this is all a preface to a trade. If anyone hasn’t seen, Eklund has posted that “JAGR MAY BE TRADEBAIT.” He may have officially lost his mind. Unless, I am totally missing something.

    6. I know we all agreed at one point to ignore a certain poster…maybe now we should all sign some sort of pact to ignore Eklund, especially since we shouldn’t be as desperate for news as we were during the off-season.

Am I the only one that keeps laughing at how badly the Devils are doing only to then remember the Rangers are doing worse? No matter how early it is, the points we don’t collect only put undue pressure on February and March. It may be dull, but I’d rather the Rangers coast into the playoffs with a solid year than a flashy six weeks.

Hey, it wouldn’t be the first time the Rangers traded a captain…ask Vic Hadfield.

    8. True stranger things have happened, Brian Leetch comes to mind. I read, but don’t post often, and thought perhaps it would be an interesting debate. Particularly now that the demographic of the team has changed.

    9. Prediction: Struds with 2 garbage goals, tied for team lead in goals scored. just kidding.

Based on Sam’s report: goalie was Chad Killam – “He did decently today”. DECENTLY? What? they should have lit him up like a xmas tree. oh man, this game is going to be interesting. Can you say MUST WIN in October. Devs return at 500 after 9 on the road they will be in good shape.

    10. Boy, that’s great. This team can’t score and Renney is replacing the injured Callahan with Strudwick and moving Hollweg up to the third line. This guy has lost his mind. I’ve stated on this blog that jagr is the captain, hall of famer, one of the best wingers in hockey and hasn’t been scoring any goals so Jagr should be taking hits here but seems that jagr gets a pass but not from me. If they traded jagr at this point in his career I wouldn’t mind as long as sather could get a good young player with draft picks.

    11. Korpikoski, a productive LW, would also make a good call-up. What is the matter with the Rangers brain trust? Strudwick? Is Strudwick blackmailing Sather and Renney over something? Strudwick over Korpikoski and Byers? Impossible!

      Joe Thornton anyone?

    13. I wouldn’t even care if they traded Jagr. He’s the most overrated player in the league and the Quest to Find Jagr a Center has been throwing the other lines off all season. We signed Straka to keep Jagr happy, and he’s just another guy on the down side of his career holding a roster spot. We keep Malik in the lineup to make Jagr happy when he’s arguably our worst defenseman.

Let Jagr go, see ya. Take a Run at Marian Hossa next year, and leave it at that.

    14. Replacing scorers with gritty players can’t exactly drop goal production. On defense they’ve played well, or relatively well. If their scorers aren’t scoring goals, maybe the others can. Even the blind Beukeboom eventually found a goal every now and then.

    15. EB,
Somehow I don’t see Strudwick or Hollweg getting a shot on goal never mind scoring a goal.

    16. I’ll stand by my prediction last year: Jagr ends his career in Ranger blue. He’s got too much of a good thing going on here to leave. And if ANYONE thinks it will be someone other than Jagr or GOD making the decission to move him, you’re sorely mistaken. He’s filled more seats in MSG and put more money in Dolan’s hands than anyone has this century, save for a brief mention of Messier’s retirement party. If he does go to FA, it will be his choice.

As for the Strudwick move, I’m not against it per say. I’d MUCH rather have him on wing than on defense(which he can’t play).

I said this to pronounced jeers in another thread, but I’ll say it again. I don’t mind Hollweg on third, seeing as though he’s the one guy on fourth I see putting pucks in the net. Some point to Betts’ nine goals last season. But keep in mind, he skated a decent number of games on third himself. Holly I see crashing the net and making some hits. If that opens up space for Dawes and Dubinsky, the guys who CAN score, then I’m all for it. It’s the best of a bad situation. And seeing as though no one in Hartford is lighting up the lamp, its as good a move as any.

Regretablly, I’m thinking the skid continues tonight like a lump of fecal matter down the ass-end of a fat sweaty guy’s tighty whities. I’m hoping Gomez and his $7 million contract prove me wrong.

    17. im done complaining about the roster and the coaching decisions, we need just need to start winning. Who knows even though these devils arent the same as past years maybe a win tonight will get this team on a role.

    18. Wow it’s worse than I thought. I expected Scathard to be called up. Instead lucky us get subjected to Jason Strudwick……. ugh.

    19. Would any of you do Jagr, Pock, and Mara to Atlanta for Hossa and Zhitnik? If you had to make the decision right now?

    20. I know it wouldn’t happen, but I am just bored at work. And since someone mentioned a Jagr trade I figured I would throw that out there.

    21. Trading Jagr would be a deferring of a Stanley Cup pursuit, until at least next season, and this season has just begun. Plus, the front office isn’t forgetting, and neither should we, that Jagr really turned it up a notch in the most recent post-season. His effort was 100%, and his leadership much in evidence.

It would be completely out of character for Sather to plan ahead more than one season, especially as this may be his last season at the helm. Schoenfeld could take over today and nothing would be lost in the transition.

    22. The only reason they signed Pock for two years is for insurance for next season. Malik, Mara, Rozy all UFA’s, Giradi and Tuts are RFA’s, staal is the only one under contract for next year. I fully expect tuts and giradi coming back, farewell Mara and Malik. I can also see Rozy wanting big bucks and Sather waving him good bye.

      08-09 D
      Tuts-Giradi
      Staal-Sauer
      Pock-FA

We’ll see what happens, i wouldn’t see Pock being called back up this year…

    23. Doodie Machetto on

Strudwick, Orr, and Betts: the SOB line, as in, I can’t believe that Son Of a Bitch Renney actually put that horrible line together, and also as in SOBbing, which I will be doing tonight after seeing that line in action.

    24. Richter – Common sense says you don’t trade 22 year olds on the way up for 36 year olds on the way down.

    25. JASON STRUDWICK ON THE LINE??? THIS IS YET ANOTHER CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF WHY TOM RENNEY IS BY FAR THE DUMBEST COACH IN THE NHL. Strudwick is a scrub D-man but is now moved to a foward position. lmao, you can’t make this stuff up! FIRE RENNEY…ASAP!

    26. Nice ones, Doodie.

As I said yesterday, I would rather see Betts on the third line with Hollweg centering fourth, then put Drury on a left wing somewhere, I guess with Dubinsky and Shanahan. But with this lineup, I fully expect Struds to only get a handful of shifts on the third line, at most, with different wingers rotating in there instead, with a three-man rotation for the fourth line wings.

I’m mostly worried about the penalty killers. We’ve got all our defensemen, but our forwards would be Drury, Shanahan, Betts, Hossa, Hollweg?, Strudwick?, Dubinsky?

    27. longtimerangersfan on

Right, then they can pay all of his salary instead of just part of it. I think the Caps have seen all of Jagr they want.

    28. Doodie Machetto on

Trade away the future of your franchise for a player that you traded away because you hated him in the first place.

That’s like if St. Louis trades Erik Johnson for Bill Guerin (coincidentally, also his team’s captain) because he played well with Tkachuk last year.

    29. Doodie Machetto on

Sorry for the lameness of the Guerin example. The only other example I could think of was Jagr for Crosby in Crosby’s rookie year because Jagr and Lemieux used to work together.

SP, I’ve got another one Orr, Betts, Strudwick: OBS, as in, Overwhelming Bull Shit.

    30. Why do the Rangers need MORE offense vs the Devils…with them giving up 3.5 gaols a game and Martyonly as good as the team in front of him is 28th in GAA and 32 with a 86.4% save %. I think they will need more D since teh Devils have played a MUCH difrent game this year..

    31. Doodie Machetto on

Because to win a game, you need more Offense than 0, no matter how bad the other team’s defense is… unless you dress Malik, Aaron Ward, Karel Rachunek, and Sandis Ozolisnh: aka Henrik’s worst nightmare.

    32. IMO I THINK SHANNY IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE SECOND LINE. TO BE HONEST HE LOST HIS GAME ACTUALLY HE LOSY HIS GAME ONCE HE COLLIDED WITH KNUBLE LAST YEAR. HE HASNT BEEN HIMSELF. HE HASNT BEEN TOUGH ON THE PUCK, HE HASNT SHOWN HIS LEADERSHIP, HES BEEN TAKING MORE PENALTIES THEN EVER AND NEVER EVER PASSES THE FU^KIN PUCK. YEAH WE PAY SHANNY TO SHOOT, BUT HE SHOOTS FROM THE WORST PLACES IN THE ZONE AND HASNT GOTTEN QUALITY REBOUNDS BECASUE OF IT. TRUST ME THIS TEAM HAS MORE THAN SHANNY TO BLAME FOR THERE PERFORMANCE BUT HE CLEARLY ISNT PROVIDING THE ASSETS WHICH WE PAY HIM FOR. HES GOT TWO GAMES LEFT BEFORE WE HAVE TO PAY HIM HIS DEFFERED BONUS NEXT YEAR. SEND HIM ALONG WITH MARA TO MONTREAL FOR KOMISAREK. THATS THE MOVE AND BRING UP BOURRET ON RIGHT WING. WELL CLEAR CAP SPACE FOR A LATE SEASON TRADE AND GET A PLAYER WHOSE ON HIS WAY TO BEING A HARD HITTING SHUT DOWN DEFENDER LIKE WE DESPERATLEY NEED.

    33. Richter35: The Caps aren’t trading a 22 year old Ovechkin for a 35 year old Jagr. McPhee would be fired on the spot if he did that. Ovechkin is probably the most exciting and talented player in the league.

    34. DOODIE

Lol priceless stuff, i will be sobbing tonight as well, hopefully sobbing after a win.

      LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Jags for OV. I hope your joking, cause thats the dumbest thing any hockey fan can ever say in there life.

Lets trade a 40 – 50 goal 20 year old scorer, for a 35 year old guy who used to be a 40 – 50 goal scorer and who cant buy a goal right now.

Wow, thats just dumb. Dumb dumb dumb. I cant believe anyone would wanna mention something that dumb.

      But to make it interesting.

Do you think WSH would except Hank for OV. I doubt it but its interesting, cause Hank is definitely worth alot, but id never want him traded.

NOW, Jagr for Backstrom on the other hand, now thats something that can probably happen, IF the Caps are a few points out of the playoffs, and they need something at the deadline.

    35. Doodie Machetto on

      Magic 8-Ball
      Ouija board
Dung droppings of migrating Canadian Geese

Jagr isn’t going anywhere unless he pulls a Teddy Nolan and sleeps with someone’s wife.

    39. Yes, Komisarek would be fine, in exchange for Mara – Shanahan. In fact, any Montreal D, other than Mark Streit, would fill the bill.

    40. Komisarek is from Long Island..West Islip….and hates the rangers and would not play for them..

      good luck tonite

    41. At least Pock does have some offensive upside and can play wing as well. If Renney did not want to bring anyone up, then he should have chosen Pock to play (but instead he is in Hartford). Strudwick—-ugh—I need a barf bag now and during the game! Strudwick can’t skate or check…what is his function???

    42. Right, as a Long Island boy he dreamed all his life of playing for Montreal. Hey, I even dreamed I played for the Harlem Globetrotters, once. It is called a “nightmare.”
