It has now reached comical proportions

80

Well, at least kind of funny.

It is one thing for the Rangers to lay an egg like they did last week in Atlanta. It is another to come up empty like they did in Boston.

But for them to be trailing 1-0 through two periods in Pittsburgh shows somewhere along the lines, they must have upset the hockey gods. It’s a sad state of affairs when you call this one of their most encouraging showings of the season. But that’s what it is, and yet unless they break the hex this period, it’s still going to add up to another loss.

Maybe that’s funny. Or maybe in a lot of Rangers fans eyes, this is the equivalent of cruel and unusual punishment…

  1. How long before this freak string of bad luck permanently damages their collective psyche as a team? I think that is the real danger here. Good streaks and bad streaks come and go (yes, even horrendeously bad streaks). But, hopefully they don’t lose their confidence.

  2. BlueClue-

Give her a pair of skates and a jersey and I’ll put my money on her to score before this team puts one in.

  3. I know people keep saying it’s early and it’s true to a point but the rangers are in trouble and this beginning is different than the past two years start of the season. To me, it all starts with Jagr.

  4. It’s really frustrating because they have looked really good on defense (that’s nothing new) and have been getting decent chances, but not great ones too often. Like Gomez said, they need a flukey bounce.

  5. It really makes you rethink the value of cullen, nylander, and avery.

The best thing going for the Rangers is that they are only one shot from changing this game, thanks to Henrik.

  6. Maybe we should start taking a collection on souls to sell to Satan for a goal. Maybe if we get enough we can afford a couple goals.

  7. they putplayed them.. they need to keep on shooting the puck…

    dawes played great..

callahan has to watch the friggin stupid penalties, he had 2 tonight including the one that led to the goal with 2 seconds in the period with plenty of help.

    they will be fine losers……

  8. I want Cullen and Nylander back!!! Why the heck can this team not find the back of the net? You think we can trade Gomez for Nylander and someone for Cullen? Even when Avery comes back, things aren’t looking good.

I feel bad for Henrik. He should be leading the the lead in so many stats now, but he is not and the worst part is that he is the one who has kept him in the games.

This team is PATHETIC. We need a coaching change or something. Well…Bob Hartley is available….

  9. What the f’ are the Rangers going to do? They are playing great defensively but can’t buy a goal. Shanny, Jagr, Gomez, Drury, Callahan. Prucha – no goals tonight or in most of the first few games. You can’t blame the defense for these last 2 games, but if this continues we need a jump start. I don’t think the Rangers will fire Renney, at least not this early and I wouldn’t necessarily want that. Let’s see if Sather makes a trade to wake this team up.

We could use some help on D quarterbacking the PP big time. This guy ala Leetch would set everythig up and get the puck to the forwards.

Also, whatever happened to having a body in front of the net (in the slot) on the Power play or even on even strength when we are in their zone. Not since Adam Graves have we had someone to sit in front and make some traffic for the goalie?

The Rangers should dump Hossa, Malik, Mara, Orr, maybe trade Dawes or another youngster for smooth defenseman or maybe another forward.

SOmething has got to give sooner than later – the Rangers are at the bottom of the division already, only 2 wins, what the f’?!

  10. I don’t want Cullen or Nylander back.
Nylander is not doing that well in DC anyway and Cullen… Come on.

  11. Well I just broke my hand as I put it through my wall. I can not watch this team anymore. ZERO GOALS that count in the last 4 games. If I were Henrik I would demand a trade…this team is ruining his run at Venzina.

  12. I will say this. Two solid games with no goals. We need wins but you can’t take away solid defensive play. I say a 6 game homestand might just be what this team needs. I am going to bed with my head up tonight. We didn’t win, but for most of the night I liked what I saw. Complain all you want, but the lines looks solid and the people who need to play well did, they just didn’t score. And I know at the end of the day that is all that matters, but I don’t give a fug. Call me stupid, call me crazy, call me whatever you want, this team is turning this around.

  13. longtimerangersfan on

I’m sorry but Jagr is just not gonna happen with the players that are here…don’t think that he will put forth the effort to play with them.

  14. And of course the only goal scored against them was on a weak-ass penalty call. And the goal-scoring shot wasn’t even a real freakin shot, it kinda dribbled in off Malkin’s stick. I don’t even know what to say at this point…

  15. Jagr is not leading this team by example. He got worked by Glen Metropolit for the puck at center ice vs. Boston for cripes sake! A great guy but a career 4th liner/minor leaguer. Not to mention the power play is never going to score a goal playing catch around the perimeter and this team is never going to score a goal as long as Dawes and Callahan are consistently the only guys on the ice that look capable of doing so.

  16. Hey Stuart, you fucking asshole, go peddle your stupidity on Mitch Beck. He’s in your class

  17. THEY OUTPLAYED the Penguins tonight folks. They didn’t score, but they definitely were the better team tonight. I am sick of listening to a lot of you. Everyone is pissed off, I punched a hole in my wall, but give credit where credit is due. This team is going to go 5-1 at home on this homestand. Maybe even 6-0. I am going to be there Thursday night to watch us beat the devils.

  18. They arent even fun to watch anymore…they have more shots then the other team but every shot seems to be right in the chest…its so depressing

  19. Nasty, for a team as talented as the Rangers, looking good without scoring doesn’t cut it. They really don’t look good since they are not scoring.

  20. LTRF, how you doing? Can’t make it to Carolina for golf this fall, maybe in the late winter, early spring.

  21. Folks, I understand the concern. But they are getting chances, they had many tonight. They are talented, and they are starting to get to know each other out there. I knew they were not going to come flying out of the gate and be a great team. It is going to take time. I will be honest, I would rather have a rough start and get better as the year goes on. They looked good tonight and didn’t score. They looked pretty good against Boston and didn’t score. The pucks will go on. This happens to teams sometimes.

  23. Honestly, I don’t know what to say… HOW COME THEY DON’T SCORE?????? I feel really bad for Henrik and Tyutin-Girardi pair because they played really well. COME ON RENNEY!!!

  24. Cullen is at almost a point per game now that he is back with Carolina. My point with that too is that Prucha-Cullen-Callahan were starting to form chemistry last season. Nylander freaking kicked ass with Jagr. How long is it going to take for this team to click? We have a team that can be great, but we aren’t great if we don’t score goals. Something has to be done to wake this team up.

  25. It sounds silly, but the Rangers look like the Cup team of the Devils of a few years back. Seriously. Their D looks very good. They just might be in a ton of 1-0 an 2-1 games if their offense can’t do squat. I just hope we are on the wining side of those games in the next 72 of them.

I truly feel that D is where the wins start. They hit like 3-4 pipes tonight, at least. The dominated the play for 3/4s of the game. They had a few questionable calls against them (Callahan in particular). And they thoroughly dominated the game.

That and $1.50 gets you a hotdog on the streets of NYC.

    This cannot continue.

I will say this, everytime the Rangers take shots on the goal there are like 2-3 opposition in front of the goal blocking or preventing the shot from getting through cleanly. The same cannot be said when the opposition take shots at Henry. A lot of times we are scrambling around trying to get in position or recovering from an odd-man rush.

You could look at this two ways. Either 1) The Rangers are taking too long to get their shots on goal or, 2) They are out of position when the opposition forms their attack. Look, they have given up 1 regulation goal in the last 2 games. That is good. Some things are working. They have scored 0 goals in the last two games, so clearly some things are not.

I do feel though that tonight’s game was top 3 of the season in terms of the grit they showed, the patience I saw, and the domination that they are capable of.

The problem is though, they lost. At some point they have to be accountable for not putting the biscuit in the basket. This is getting tiresome.

I am going on Thursday night and hope that they can outplay the Devils who just might be the one team with less going for them right now then the Rangers. Maybe they need a long homestand where than can match some lines in our favor?

The other thing I notice, every goaltender in the league must get so pumped up for their game against the Blueshirts. All I heard about into this game was how poorly Fleury was playing this season. Coulda fooled me! Next we have Brodeur who always stands on his head against the Rangers!

BTW, was that Malik’s fault on the goal?

I just cannot stomach this that much longer.

  27. Repost from the last entry…

This is just effing ridiculous. I don’t want to hear anything about chemistry anymore. The Rangers haven’t scored a goal in almost straight 7 periods. It’s time for them to shape up or someone’s gonna ship out. If this is players being lazy, Renney needs to beat it into them. If it’s bad strategy, Renney needs to be ousted. If someone’s bringing down this team, they need to be benched or traded away. They have 13 goals in 8 games. Not even two goals a game. Rangers fans, used to being pessimistic, are getting restless. We were given delusions of grandeur when Slats hit a “home run with Gomez and Drury. So far it’s looking like a foul ball (excuse the really stupid metaphor). Something needs to happen and it needs to happen soon, or our boys in blue are gonna look like the cellar-dwelling losers they were earlier this decade.

Btw, I give Malik fault on Malkin’s goal. It’s obvious he was at the backdoor looking for the perfect pass. He didn’t even have to get good wood on it for it to go in. Malkin is by no means small, but Malik has the size advantage. He’s got 3 inches and 40 pounds on the guy! He should have been using his body to box Malkin out from the crease. Instead, he just tried to put his stick in there, which is good for breaking up passes in the open ice, but not when a guy like Malkin is waiting at your backdoor. Lazy, lazy, LAZY penalty killing by Marek Malik. He deserves all the boos he gets at home. I’m sure there will be plenty on Thursday.

Doing good…wondered what happened to you as you haven’t posted for a while. Probably be in Ct. for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hope to make it to a Ranger game or two with my son (he has a partial season ticket plan) but the way they are playing am not sure I want to go.

    E-mail dakslim@hotmail.com

  29. Thank God I was only able to get a partial plan. Can they move Leetch night up to Thursday night so there can be at least some inspiration?

  30. BlueClue – I forgot to mention that. I believe it was in the third period (I could be wrong) that Malik just GAVE the puck to Mark Recchi on a weak blind backhand pass that was supposed to go out of the zone. Down a goal and little time left, he almost sealed the deal for the Pens right then and there. Idiot.

  31. tom renney is by far the dumbest coach in the NHL. why does this moron keep insisting on playing a loser like marcel hossa, especially on the first damn line???? what has he done to earn that spot and earn playing time late in the 3rd period when the team needs a goal desperately?? why was hollweg on the ice late in the 3rd period, which led to him turning the puck over in the neutral zone trying to stick handle and almost leading to a 2nd pens goal?? why didn’t he have the b.alls to pull lundqvist when YOUR TEAM HAS A PP WITH 3 MINUTES TO GO IN REGULATION! THE PP HAS DONE NOTHING ALL YEAR! PUT AN EXTRA ATTACKER ON THE ICE RENNEY YOU IDIOT!! GOD, this team has no cohesivness and it falls on the head coach. Fire this loser ASAP!

  32. lol, sorry for going a little crazy there, but this team is so frustrating to watch. you’d think there would be some continuity on this team and yet they’ve shown absolutely nothing. ugh…

  33. Personally I like Gomez and Drury, but I really feel that getting them both in exchange for Cullen and Nylander was a mistake. We broke apart our first line (which really had nothing wrong with it) for nothing. One would have been enough. Sather got greedy, and so far it hasn’t panned out.

  34. Everybody breathe……this will pass. If Scotty Bowman in his prime were coaching this team, they’d be 6-2. But there is too much talent for even a weak, indecisive Renney to eff up an entire season.

I think it will take time. I think they’ll be at .500 no earlier than the first of the year. I think they will suffer because their coach is a third-rate Dr. Phil. But they will come on and make you all file away these days as an unpleasant memory. Can they compete for a Cup? Not until they have a rock behind the bench.

  35. BRags

Agree with you on many counts that Renney is sub-par.
But this has nothing to do with Hossa. He is responsible defensively and can go on a hot streak at any time.

In regard to the end of the game, yeah, Renney should have pulled Hank at the PP for the extra skater to get the 2 man advantage.

It’s not exactly as if our regular PP has been explosive lately.

  36. LET'S GO RANGERS on

Cullen’s 5 power play points so far this season would be nice in the Ranger lineup…I believe he would be the 2nd leading scorer if he put up the same amount of points he has in Carolina…then again, the Rangers didn’t know how to use him properly, so it’s hard to say what would have happened.

  37. Well, they got rid of the uniform “apron,” Betty Crocker, and that’s a start. Now all they have to do is overcome “the dishpan hands.”

  38. Blueclue…what are you talking about??? First of all, defense isn’t the problem on this team right now. (altough Malik is an absolute disgrace) If Hossa is playing on the first line b/c he’s “responsible defensively” then the rangers have some serious problems. No, he’s on the first line, b/c dummy Renney thinks this guy has wonderful offensive talents and meshes well with Jagr. When in reality, he blows. He’s lazy, can’t pass at all, has no shot. In fact, he does absolutely NOTHING well. I have no idea what you’re talking about in terms on him going on a hot streak. B/c he scored like points playing with Jagr LAST SEASON, he deserves to be on the first line?? He was embarassed in training camp by Dawes. Yet he makes the team and not only that, he now gets rewarded by playing on the top line. You can’t make this stuff up, Renney needs to go. He’s a HORRIFIC head coach, not bad, HORRIFIC.

  39. Time to start placing your bets, folks, what will the Rangers record have to fall to for Renney to be fired? Given, NHL GMs are pretty impatient, but I think Slats’ll take longer. They have a 6 game homestand coming up. I say after that if they’re 4-9-1, while still averaging less than two goals a game, Renney’s gone.

  40. and I’m not saying Hossa is the reason we’re losing. We’re losing b/c this team can’t score goals. Gomez, Jagr, Shanahan, Drury, etc. These guys have done nothing. What I’m saying is, that when a team is struggling to score goals, it is INEXCUSABLE to be playing a stiff like Marcel Hossa on the first line. Makes absolutely NO SENSE.

  41. Maybe I’m crazy, but I almost thought Eddie Olczyk should be coaching our team. He said they need to put an ‘effin man in front of the net and he’s right.

And, if I know what Jagr is going to do every time he touches the puck, I can’t imagine it’s hard for opposing teams to prepare. Change it up, even if it’s just for a little while, to convince teams something unexpected just might occur — even if you eventually go back to the midboards. Why can every other team create space?

And the penalties? Oh, the penalties. Sit someone! Do something, Renney!

Shanny, stop saying the players are being too tentative with the puck, you have more shots than anyone on the face of the planet, and SCORE.

If i have to watch one more middling goalie look like Patrick Freakin’ Roy against us, I’m gonna vomit.

Thank god for HL. Let’s go Rangers.

  42. hey blueclue…the team has just lost 4 in a row. they haven’t scored in over 6 periods of play. Jagr hasn’t done anything offensively. If hossa is taken off his line, I’m sure it won’t upset him too much.

  43. God, I almost forgot about the power play. Did you notice in the first period when they were putting pucks and bodies toward the net that they were getting good scoring chances? However, after the intermission they realized what they were doing and went back to typical Ranger hockey. Scott Gomez is full of crap, he claims that they need an “ugly goal” to get their motor started, yet he and everyone else on the team refuses to attempt an ugly goal. They all want the fancy play. Why would a guy like Shanahan who has a laser of a shot want to park his old ass in front of Fleury when he could fire from bad positions all day long and pray one in 50 will go in? If they want to keep their power play like that, fine, but they’re gonna see a lot more goose eggs on the scoreboard if they do.

  44. BRags

Hossa was injured and just came back today.
He was scratched the first two games I believe.

What was this; his second game playing with Jagr this year.
You gotta give line combos atleast 4-5 games to gel.

Last season, Hossa worked well with Nylander and Jagr for stretches.

I am NOT saying Hossa is the answer, or he should be a first liner.
What I am saying is that this team NEEDS to find scoring from other players on other lines.

….and yes, I really do think Jagr wants to play with Hossa. Jagr OWNS Renney.

  45. shanahan’s shot has been atrocious this year. he should stay in front of the net and try to put a rebound in. playing him on the point, with under 3 mins to go in regulation on a PP is not the answer.

  46. That goes double for Shanahan, tonight, vs. Pittsburgh. His ONLY offensive stat was six S.O.G. I mean – no hits, no blocked shots, no takeaways, and, bully for him, no giveaways. #14 definitely needed a breather and took the night off.

  47. Elena – totally agree with you on Cullen (not old either at almost 31). the 3rd line misses him and he is showing what he can do on the point with Carolina on the pp. I said that constantly on Blueshirt Bulletin until I was Blue in the face when the rumors came out and the youth brigade wanted him thrown overboard for Dubinsky. I wanted one of the higher priced “M” dmen gone instead to make the cap work.

I’m not sure this team is going to come out of their funk this yr. Other than The King and Tyutin Girardi I don’t see too many positives throughout the lineup (young or old). Avery doessn’t count since he’s been out all yr.

  48. Honestly? I don’t like that “drop the puck” play that Renney preferes. It’s kind of stupid with so much of a talent and Captain who hates that type of play. I’d say, I’ll wait until Renney is fired – and then we’ll start winning. Last season we didn’t like his coaching, this year is a way worse. Sorry, Tom but you wasted your preseason time, that is why we’re looking like crap of sh&*!!! SHOW US SOME EMOTION ON THE BENCH!!! COME ON!!! SHAKE THIS UP!!! Otherwise you’ll be shaken…

  49. Oh, God, those “youth brigade” imbeciles, right, JOE? I mean Jagr, Shanahan, Drury and Co. can’t put the puck in the ocean, right now, and you want to put the “Savior” moniker on Matt Cullen, had we kept him, and do what, Joe, farm-out Dubinsky as the scapegoat for all this ineptitude?

Man, they must be up in arms in Chicago, as that 18-year old frisbee-chucker Kane scored just two goals and got the first star, Tuesday night, after scoring the winning goal in the Shootout, last Saturday. And that other kid in Chicago, who is obviously in over his head, 19-year old Jonathan Toews scored his third even-strength goal in his seventh NHL game, a few hours ago.

It seems to me, Joe, that the teams promoting teenagers, and getting real produciton from them, – and another one, Kessel, burned us last Saturday, are passing us by, so that one might surmise that holding on the to Nylander’s and the Cullen’s of the world is not a viable response to the winning strategy of going with talented kids, rather than bringing in the Scatchard’s of the world – you know, the 30+, waiver wire, stop-gap, journeyman-acquisition syndrome.

Also, I see Boston is KEEPING Cucic, I think his name is, the 19-year old kid they just promoted from the OHL, beyond his nine-game professional tryout, so that his NHL-level salary kicks in, and he becomes a free agent seven years from now.

But you, JOE, want to keep the old guys and the journeymen in silk shirts until they are 40. Are you a mole from Slats’ front office staff, or something? Man, the last thing I want for my life is to be mired in that caveman mentally think tank.

Continued success with your bashing of the kids, old boy. Just don’t keep track of the way they are treated, and the enormous impact they are making in the NHL – those who are lucky enough NOT to be employed by the New York Rangers.

  50. ROBBY tonight was the first game that I sort of agree with you. The kids should have gotten more ice time. Prucha, Dubinsky, Dawes, Callihan, Girardi , Hollweg were out there busting their butts. The #2 PP unit deserved more time. But Renney knows exactly what he’s doing, maybe..Drury played better, Jagr was moving alot more, Gomez was still trying too hard, and Shanahan was too selfish. Renney has them playing team D FIRST, they have given up 1 goal in 2 games, with the help of the top notch goaltending of Lundqvist. The offense will come, and the kids will get more icetime as this season unfolds. When Avery gets back in, this team will click. He has that affect on them, and should be resigned ASAP, if what I am claiming comes to be true. And it will, hopefully ;-)

  51. The good news in all this is that Henrik is playing at his best and the “no-name” Defense we all worried about at the start of the season is actually doing its job. Its just our top 2 lines aren’t doing the business and our young 3rd line is not getting enough time (especially on PP).

If Renney hasn’t got this lot scoring by mid-November i expect Slats will be giving him the hook…

  52. Fire Renney…I can hear it already if they fall behind on Thursday night. Renny does not look like a coach on the hotseat. Is he even breathing behind the bench? No emotion. All he does is shake his head.
