Add Jessiman, Baranka, and Liffiton to those sent (Wolf)Packing

76

None of those players qualify as a surprise. It’s a testament to the surplus of defensemen in camp this year that both Liffiton and Baranka were sent to Hartford this early, given that both were in the picture for an NHL job (Baranka out of camp and Liffiton at mid-season).

In other news, the Rangers are off today before heading to Strong Island and a reunion with the Islanders (and their Ice Girls) tomorrow.

  1. No surprise here. Baranka was terrible. Jessiman made himself look really bad by losing that fight and he undid all the good he did the night before, and Liffiton was almost unnoticeable. Prucha looked strong and it didn’t look like much of an effort. Let’s hope it was first game jitters for Gomez and Drury, because they looked flat. It doesn’t help that the Rangers didn’t have a spark tonight. No Avery, Callahan or Dubinsky.

Let’s hope for a better effort on Monday.

  2. Like many, I was pretty disappointed with the game today, but it’s just preseason. Sure it’s nice to win, but it is really just to experiment what works and what doesn’t. Tonight didn’t work at all.

  3. I agree on all 3 counts. Thought Korprikoski (too lazy to look up the correct spelling, and by lazy I mean drunk) looked really good. Dawes didn’t make much of a case for himself.

  4. Everyone needs to relax and stop condemning players and management so early on.

Jeez, it was a damn preseason game and many here are ready to write off Drury and Gomez after one night.

Seriously, take a deep breath and reserve your judgment and two-cents for when it really counts.

  5. Watcing the 2 games the last 2 days I think you would have to give a starting spot to Staal. I mean kasper and hutch can not make the team. Sauer will go back to Hartford, but looked good Friday night. So really it depends who you want as the 6th defender Strudwick,Pock, or Staal. I think you carry Strudwick as your 7th defender because it seems like the whole team likes him, and you send Pock to Hartford, and let Staal play with Mara.

Also I know its only 2 preseason games, but any chance Byers can make the team and play on the 4th line to start the season.

  6. Sorry

    NYRich82

It’s not that many people bitching about it.
It’s just mostly from one guy complaining
about the same thing a dozen or so times…Guess who?

  7. lines that make a lot of sense:

    Hossa-Straka-Jagr
    Prucha-Gomez-Drury
    Shanahan-Avery-Callahan
    Betts/Hollweg/Moore-Dubinsky-Byers

Betts sucks as center, he can’t pass he would be a a better wing. Jagr has chemistry with Straka and Hossa. Orr is useless. Drury has been winger most of his career. Shanahan sucks and hopefully retires soon. Prucha will get 50 goals

  8. 2 Things…

Sam – How come Lundqvist played the entire game? I thought he was going to sub out half the game?

Section 344 – Don’t think Pock can go to Hartford, because he will be taken by another team when he gets called up. He can only go on 2 week “conditioning assignments.” Remember the LA Kings last year? They needed a goalie and their best one, Jason LaBarbera, was stuck in the AHL because if they went to bring him up, someone would nab him off waivers.

  9. Strudwick vs. Staal for a job reminds me of the matchup of Rangers third line checker Val Fonteyne shadowing Gordie Howe. That was always tense and dramatic as to outcome. lol.

  10. hoof and mouth disease on

Robby it still might be in Staal’s long term interests to go to Hartford for at least 10-20 games and learn the system. If he excels there, then Sather has to pull the trigger. Same for Dubinsky, while Dawes will probably stick but if he flounders , he will probably be moved somewhere other than the skybox.

  11. czechthemout!!!!! on

HOOF-did you watch dubinsky and staal dominate the devils?
who would you rather have, mark smith on the fourth line and betts on the third?forget their age they showed they are ready to play,as did sauer,as did byers.

  12. I actually liked thwe way the team came out guns blazing last night. The only thing is, Biron was unbelievable. When he stopped Prucha’s shot that hit the crossbar and stayed out, the game was over. He had already robbed Dawes a couple of times, Gomez, Jagr, Prucha, and Drury. There was no denying him. By the time they switched in Nittymaki, the game was settled. I’m not worried, it was just preseason and we were missing 4 of our best offensive players. I was also disappointed that they kept Lundy in the whole game and that Wiikman wasn’t dressed. I thought that halfway through the game they should’ve yanked him, or at least going into the third since the game was pretty much over at that point anyway, so let Montoya take over. By far the best moment of the young year was Orr KOing Boulerice and then that smile he had on his way to the box. Beautiful, just beautiful. The worst was monster of a man Hugh Jessiman getting beat by Stuart “I’m half of Hugh Jessiman’s size” Downie. Pathetic, and I think that loss singlehandedly ended him up in Hartford. The PP looked good even though it didn’t score. Lots of shots, good puck movement, and Roszi wasn’t afraid to shoot.

    Three more things:

    1) While I’m talking about not being afraid to shoot, I’ve got to talk about Paul Mara for a second. I thought that last night was by far the WORST performance by any defenseman I have seen in a long, LONG time. I never was really on the hate-Mara train, but my God, he was AWFUL! From the start of the game with his turnover right in front of the net to the 5 or 6 shots he just completely missed, to the two bad penalties, lousy lousy lousy. I would’ve sent him down instead of Liffiton. Not Baranka though, Baranka had a bad game too.

    2) In my mind, the final forward spot on the top three lines is a two man race at this point between Dawes and Dubinsky. Dubinsky would take third line center, and Dawes would take first or 2nd wing. I have to say though that while I thought Dawes had a pretty good start to the game, he didn’t finish as strong (which is true of the whole team). I’m leaning towards Dubinsky right now, but there’s still time for Dawes to show me something.

    3) There’s also one training camp/preseason story that no one has talked about: John Giannonne. We all know that Rosen isn’t a spring chicken and has gotta be thinking of retiring soon and hearing from Giannone as a possible replacement was a good reminder. I don’t like him though. Send him back to the studio. He just doesn’t have that good broadcast voice. When they had Steve Cangielosi guest though, I said to myself: Damn, I’d take Cangielosi! Kenny Alberts is ok on the radio, but I didn’t like him the few times I saw him on TV. I think Joe Micheletti is having a good camp, but I hate Al Trautwig as usual.

  13. hoof and mouth disease on

czech If they don’t make it for a game one, it won’t be the end of the world. In Sather’s world only Dawes, Dubinsky, &/or Staal MIGHT stick. Right now I get the feeling it will only be Dawes. That doesn’t make it RIGHT to everyone. Having too many guys ready, dominating, or earning spots is a better problem than not enough, but it’s still a problem that has to be solved. I just think Sather will stick with Jagr, Gomez, Hossa, Shanahan, Drury, Avery, Straka, Callihan, Prucha, Hollweg, Betts, & Orr as his starting lineup. On D Rozival, Malik, Mara, Tyutin, Girardi, Pock, Strudwick, & Hutchinson. Knowing Renney & Sather Smith might even get the nod over Dawes. Whoever flounders, or gets injured Dawes, Dubinsky, Staal & more can adequately step in. The more is Korpi, Byers, Jessimen, Sauer, Baranka, Liffiton, & Bourett , just to name a few. But the mentality of a team going for The Cup is not the same as a rebuild team. It’s Sather’s team, & he’ll do what he THINKS best. It’s guaranteed not everyone will agree.

  14. hoof and mouth disease on

Doodie at least Jessimen dropped them, he’ll be fine. Mara can’t hit the net. I like Dave Maloney over all of them.

  15. lines that make a lot of sense:

    Hossa-Straka-Jagr
    Prucha-Gomez-Drury
    Shanahan-Avery-Callahan
    Betts/Hollweg/Moore-Dubinsky-Byers

Betts sucks as center, he can’t pass he would be a a better wing. Jagr has chemistry with Straka and Hossa. Orr is useless. Drury has been winger most of his career. Shanahan sucks and hopefully retires soon. Prucha will get 50 goals

I hate paying attention to stupidity but…
    I wonder…nevermind
Betts is not a bad center. He wins may clutch faceoffs and is a phenomenal penalty killer and shot blocker, but definitely a fourth liner.
Jagr has played with Gomez for less than two weeks so… I guess he sucks!
Orr is useless… yet he sticks up for his team mates and basically ensures that Jagr, Gomez, Drury, etc don’t get buried by cheap hits etc. oh and yeah, his team wants him in the lineup. And he sucks!
Oh yeah, Drury sucks too because let me guess he played better in Buffalo with his former linemates…
Shannahan sucks… but is wonderful leader, a future hall of famer, scored 29 goals last year, had 33 assists dispite suffering a nasty concussion, came back to score 5 goals 2 assists in the playoffs, dropped the gloves with Brashear and on and on and on…yeah he sucks!
I don’t know about Prucha scoring 50, but hopefully will score alot of goals, the only point you might be right on…

I don’t remember Val Fonteyne but I do remember “Leap’in Lou Fontinato” getting his clock cleaned by Gordie Howe.

  17. DoodieMachetto,

They said on the broadcast last night that sam was just on vacation in florida. Preseason is a time for everyone to get rolling, not just the teams. Anyone catch the main camera get dropped at one point? Preseason hockey.

I was suprised the rangers kept in henrik for the entire game. Even in a regular season game if the goalie gives up more than 4 they are looking to switch around.

  18. Maybe they kept the King in the whole time for conditioning at an NHL level; something he hasn’t had since last season.
Scrimmages really don’t count for much-

The season is starting soon and him being in his best game shape is priority number one-

  19. I may never understand how that rule made it into the CBA – needing to pass through waivers to be called back up along with the half-salary cap hit. I can’t see how that would benefit the owners/GMs or the players, except for bringing in new young players into the game. But with the cap, young players would be brought up anyway. They should just make it like baseball, sending a player down passes him through waivers, but they are free to bring a player up whenever, whether on NHL or two-way contract.

  20. “Shannahan sucks… but is wonderful leader, a future hall of famer, scored 29 goals last year, had 33 assists dispite suffering a nasty concussion, came back to score 5 goals 2 assists in the playoffs, dropped the gloves with Brashear and on and on and on…yeah he sucks!”

That is all in the past, now he is outplayed by 2nd tier prospects.

“Betts is not a bad center. He wins may clutch faceoffs and is a phenomenal penalty killer and shot blocker, but definitely a fourth liner.
Jagr has played with Gomez for less than two weeks so… I guess he sucks!”

and how exactly is he a good center? How many assists did he score? How many good passes has he made? He can be center on PK and take faceoffs as a winger, but he is not a center.

Jagr has nothing to do with Gomez sucking, Gomez just isn’t a great player period.

“Orr is useless… yet he sticks up for his team mates and basically ensures that Jagr, Gomez, Drury, etc don’t get buried by cheap hits etc. oh and yeah, his team wants him in the lineup. And he sucks!
Oh yeah, Drury sucks too because let me guess he played better in Buffalo with his former linemates…”

Hollweg’s ability to hit and injure other team stars is what will keep other teams honest, not Orr’s 6 fights a season.

Drury doesn’t suck, but it is a fact that he played mostly as a winger.

  21. We should get one of those retro Eagles jerseys that they are wearing today and give it to Henrik Lundqvist. The blue and yellow are the Swedish colors because Swedes settle the Philly area!

  23. BTW, good to see the triumphant return of Josh.

    ——-

Yes, Josh is awesome. I remember last season we rode him a little for updates after a “light weekend” or something and the guy went and dropped so much info on us it was ridiculous. He’s good.

    “strong island”

  24. Does anyone know anything about Michael Busto? Was he even invited to Ranger camp or at Wolfpack camp. Maybe he is injured any information would be nice thanks.

  25. ORR Punch Survivor....Barely!!! on

Im not even pissed about the game last night…If anything its good.

The brainless Hyena’s love mate Baranka proved that he’s not NHL ready nor will he ever be ready. So good call Hyena, thats why you make one hell of a shitty GM, congrats.

Anyway, Dawes looked lost, and only ad 1 good scoring chance on the PP, clearly held back Jagr and Goemr in my opinion. Lets just trade the kid already, seriously even if he turns out to be a 30 goal scorer, he is just not good in our system. Byers looked good, korpi looked good in the 3rd only, Jessiman embarrissed himself.

And well, like one of my many names…..Orr kicks yin yang.

Lol Bouly sucker punches the guy, forcing him into a fight and gets his ass knocked the hell out. Its to early for Orr to start knocking guys out. He’s one of the best fighters in the league, and people write him offf for his size. He threw a nice hit to in that game but the knockout gave me chills. Lol then the smile on his face when the crowd was going bonkers…as JD would say.

Like i said, anyone who bitches and moans about this, lol quit whining its no big deal, its good, having us get shut out with Dru, gomer, Jags, Pru etc in the lineup, its good because now these guys know they are gonna have to work ten times harder, and they are not gonna be perfect.

Tyutin, and Rozsival…especially Tyuts, made Kaspar look like our best d man. So there gonna have to get there shit together.

  26. A.) How can anyone hate Al Trautwig? That’s just absurd.

B.) I think last night may be indicative of the first part of the season for the Rangers (i.e. underperforming) and I think that talk of the Cup is premature and only serves as motivation for other teams to play their games against the Rangers extremely tough. Which is no problem, except:

    – You can’t turnover the puck in your own zone so many times

    – You can’t go 0 for 7 on the power play (and also turnover the puck at the blueline on the power play…i.e. Rosival)

    – Net/net, teams in the Rangers division are not appreciabley worse than last year and are, in some cases, better.

C.) I know it’s only the preseaon, but I think last night should hopefully give the coaching staff and players a good reason to make sure this team doesn’t get too confident too soon.

I really hope I’m wrong about part B, as we all saw how tough the team had to work in the latter part of last season to eventually guarantee a spot in the playoffs, but at the same time there is too much parity in the NHL to make statements about the Cup so soon, no matter how good the team is on paper.

Last note, can someone in some position of authority to do such a thing change the positioning of the letters on the new jerseys? The “R” starts way too far away “in” and “down” from where it should be.

  27. “Does anyone know anything about Michael Busto? Was he even invited to Ranger camp or at Wolfpack camp. Maybe he is injured any information would be nice thanks.”

He is in Hartford, he is under contract, he was not invited to Rangers camp because supposedly he played bad in Traverse City tournament

“The brainless Hyena’s love mate Baranka proved that he’s not NHL ready nor will he ever be ready.”

How did he prove that, please share your thought process.

wow a copied name and a fact copied fom BB , very original. Can you repeat that? Your name should be Skip This Post Repeat No Thought Process.

  29. Blue Jackets must be feeling desperate to finally make the playoffs. Maybe they will bite on the likes of Shanahan and Malik to help them make the playoffs. Does anyone see them making the playoffs with their current lineup?

  30. hoof and mouth disease on

Busto was originally going to be invited to Rangers camp but according to JJ Daigneualt(sp) he was sent to the Pack due to a poor outing at Traverse City.

stf: I had noted about Giannone covering the preseason games, and someone responded that there was a mention during the Philly game that Rosen was on vacation in Florida.

I think we need to start thinking of Rosen replacements. We got lucky with Michelletti replacing JD; he’s a good color guy and has a sharp eye to follow the play. But if Rosen goes, the best play-by-play man we’ll have is Alberts, who I have never liked on television.

  39. Doodie Machetto on

And to repeat, I hate Trautwig. I wish that he only existed in Cool Runnings, and not in real life.

  40. Salty…To jog your memory, that was the day I got engaged before a game on the Island and was away from my computer for a few hours. … Not an excuse, but it is, in hindsight, a decent reason, no?

Absolutely! You do a great job here Josh – no mistake about that. Have you been wed yet?

  41. Speaking of Michelletti, we crossed paths around midnight at Grand Central…I made sure to tap him and say “Awesome job.”

He seems like a pretty genuine guy.

  42. I met Michelletti at Casino Night last year. He is a very cool guy, and a bank of hockey knowledge, a fine replacement(if we have to have one). I felt bad for him because he had to introduce himself to a lot of people. He was attached to Sams hip everytime I saw him.

  45. There goes an old saying something like, never speak too much because you just might let everyone know how ignorant you are.

Hyena….I just don’t get all the crap you spew. Think more, write less is something you should consider.

Hossa – Straka – Jagr is a good line? Who’s the natural center there?

“Betts sucks at center?” Name the guy with the best faceoff percentage on the team last year. Name the top 5 shot blocking forwards in the league last year please.

You think Gomez and Drury should be on the same line? Two marquee centers playing side by side. Put the bong down.

For all you other clowns on this blog saying Gomez and Drury suck, give it a frickin rest. We are 2 games into the PRESEASON! And we played with a split-squad in both games.

One thing I am already getting tired of is the MSG jerkweeds saying how great a job Mara and Strudwick are doing by being mic’d up and teaching the younger guys things. Tell those two guys to do a little less coaching and a little more playing hockey. Or, take off the skates and get behind the bench. Enough of the “Mara and Strudwick are such good guys they should be on the team.” That is a joke.

Am I correct in saying that tonight’s game will not be on TV at all?

  46. Here’s what EJ Hradek at ESPN predicts for the team this year:

    New York Rangers (42-30-10): Better.

As you know, Rangers GM Glen Sather turned a heck of an offseason double play, landing top pivots Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. When any team can add two talented centers with championship pedigree, I have to think they’ll be better — maybe, a lot better.

On paper, Gomez and Drury make the Rangers a more dangerous team. Of course, we don’t play on paper. If we did, it would look pretty strange! It will be very interesting to see how both players fit into their new high-profile surroundings.

In particular, I’ll be curious to see if Gomez finds chemistry with superstar right winger Jaromir Jagr. In the past, Gomez has worked well with snipers like Alexander Mogilny, Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta. He’s a playmaker who likes to distribute the puck to his wingers.

Logically, he should fit nicely with Jagr, who shared a natural chemistry with departed pivot Michael Nylander (the free agent signed with Washington); but we won’t know for sure until Gomez and Jagr get to work with one another for a while. If they don’t fit for some reason, coach Tom Renney will have to go to Plan B, which would likely be Drury or Martin Straka centering his top line.

Drury, meanwhile, is a versatile type who can be used in any number of situations. I figure Renney will have him on the ice for just about every important moment of a game.

Sather did pay a significant price in both term and dollars for both players, but because both are still in their prime, I think it was worth it. Sather was able to pull it off because he’s not paying full price for Jagr. (Thank you, Caps owner Ted Leonsis.) Washington continues to pay half of Jagr’s salary, and the Rangers only have to claim their half (approximately $4.94M) against their cap. Without that quirk, Sather wouldn’t have been able to sign both Drury and Gomez.

I do think the Rangers will miss Nylander, but I would have made the same decision.

The club also decided to deal center Matt Cullen back to Carolina to clear a little extra cap room. Cullen is a versatile player and a terrific skater, but you can’t pay $2.8 million in a salary-cap league to someone who doesn’t figure in a key role. Well, I guess you can, but it really doesn’t make sense.

Sather also allowed role-playing forward Jed Ortmeyer and backup goalie Kevin Weekes to leave via free agency. Ortmeyer brings energy, and it would have been nice to keep him. Sather must have believed he didn’t want to pay much more than the minimum for a fourth-liner. Weekes, meanwhile, felt slighted by management when he wasn’t used as the No. 2 goalie when he returned from injury late last season. His departure was no surprise, nor will it have much impact on the club’s performance in the coming season.

The Rangers certainly figure to better their 94-point total of last season. The expectations will be skyscraper high, though. If they don’t fall victim to the hype, they could make it a longer spring for hockey fans in New York.

  47. imitation/disease keeps changing his name, must be trying to stay competitive.

“You think Gomez and Drury should be on the same line? Two marquee centers playing side by side. Put the bong down”
