The new jerseys

35

For some reason the Rangers new jerseys have been a source of much conversation and concern among fans, and yet as far as I can see, they’re not that big a deal.

I used this example already, but I’ll use it again: when Chris Drury modeled the uniforms after practice the other day, I was looking at him for maybe 30 seconds before someone said something along the lines of, “Hey, those are the new uniforms.” Only then did I realize they were the new tighter-fitting versions for this year.

So this means either a) I have pathetic observation skills and I’m ill-suited for my profession; or b) they’re not as dramatically different as some think (by the way, if you’re still voting option “a,”, no hard feelings).

See for yourself. Below is a photo of Drury in the new duds courtesy of “Blueshirt Bulletin”:http://ordinaryleastsquare.typepad.com/blueshirtbulletin/.

I’m assuming everyone will be wearing them for Tuesday’s Blue and White game.

Sam what do the players think about them vs the old ones in reference to playing in them?

  2. training camp is going on, dawes is playing on the top line, we have too many defencemen….and we’re getting a post on new jerseys?!?!?! ;-)

  3. I don’t know. To me, it’s looking a little snug. He looks like the big awkward kid in PeeWees who was larger than the league’s jerseys. I personally think if it wasn’t broken, why fix it (or break it)?

  4. They tell me to come to camp in shape this year and they will let me play in New Jersey. I say “No way I’m playing at the Garden Baby!”

  5. The “R” in Rangers should be placed higher on the right shoulder, consistent with the way it has always been. As a result of lowering the position of the “R” the “S” on the end of the name is too low, also. It throws me off.

The one thing I am happy about re this year’s fashion show is the dumping of the Statue of Liberty farcical uniform, although we may get something even worse in 2008-2009 from Reebok, when third jerseys make a comeback. I never liked the idea of a logo depicting a female on my hockey team’s uniform. The NHL is one of the last bastions of real manhood the NAGS haven’t emasculated, YET!

Pyatt’s late outburst was overshadowed by a Brad Isbister one-timer late in the first period that caught Luongo up high. He lay face down on the ice for more than a minute before being escorted to the dressing room.

“”He’s been fine,” he said of newcomer Andrew Hutchinson, one of several NHL veterans vying for two or three spots on the blue line. “He’s steady, he moves the puck well, he’s got good vision, he’s got a good scope back there as to what’s required on both sides of the puck. It’s gonna take some exhibition games to get a good bead on him, as with a fair number of guys. But so far he’s been good.””

    Renney makes me sick.

  8. You want Tom to say a guy sucks after 3 days???

Rough crowd in here. He’s going to support his players. That’s how it works when you’re a leader.

  9. Haha Renney makes you sick because he is going easy on one guy out of 52 that he has had to watch over the last 3 days and is still getting to see play for the first time. Name the last coach the Rangers had that guided them to the playoffs two years running. Name the last coach they had that got the whole team to buy into a system of play and sacrafice for eachother. Name the last coach the Rangers had that has plugged 9 Rangers draft picks on to the team in the last two years (Prucha, Lundqvist, Hollwig, Callahan, Girardi, Tuytin, Pock, Ortmeyer, D. Moore).

Elk, Gomer, Facist…. whoever you are get a clue.

Until you can get out on the ice and play at a level that a guy like Hutchinson can (who you have never seen play mind you) you lose your right to open you fat mouth.

  10. The jerseys are lop sided. It looks like the word “Rangers” begins under his ear instead of on the shoulder where it belongs. I think someone needs their eyes examined.

I wouldn’t buy one of these, they look pretty goddamn dorky.

  11. Sam- How is Straka looking with his shoulder? Dubi from blueshirt bulletin noted that he took a hit from Kaspar and looked a little worse for the wear. Has there been any talk about the condition of his shoulder, or do you see it as a non-issue?

  12. The new RBK uniforms feature (for lack of better words), “ventilation panels” on either side which begin about the height of the armpits. (Much easier to see on uniforms such as the Capitals’ new road jersey where it’s red as compared to the basic white on players’ chests.

Just a guess, but I wonder if the seams attaching the sides of the jersey to the front preclude sewing anything on them hence the appearance of the “too-low ‘R’ and almost-invisible ‘S’.”

Of course it wouldn’t have been an issue if the esteemed NHL Commissioner ‘Zippy’ Bettman could have left well-enough alone. But, as he’s consistently demonstrated during his tenure, maintaining the values inherent in the game, emphaxizing substance over commercial fluff is alien to his agenda.

  13. The jerseys are more an issue for the fans. No longer will the jersey hide the huge beer and pizza gut like they used to. However, if the belly hangs below either jersey it’s just disgusting (you’ve all seen it).

  14. Agreed about the angle of the lettering. Too steep by a few degrees. The more I look at it, the more this things really doesn’t look well planned out. The hip reebok designers probably didn’t spend much time with the rangers because they were told they couldnt’ change much and they were looking to ‘get creative’ with each uniform.

Uh personally, as a guy more interested in playing hockey than wearing his rangers jersey to the market, I cant wait to get one of these for myself to see how they actually perform on the ice.

  16. wow that does NOT look comfortable….

“I don’t know. To me, it’s looking a little snug. He looks like the big awkward kid in PeeWees who was larger than the league’s jerseys. I personally think if it wasn’t broken, why fix it (or break it)?”

haha Zac nailed it….. truthfully, that jersey looks like a poor replica or something……looks like a “NY Rangers uniform halloween costume”

f@ck, likely going to be one of our best seasons in a while and we have to watch it in these disasters…

Drury’s perpetual look of mild surprise always makes me uncomfortable too…. “wha? how did i get here?”

  17. from uniwatchblog.com:

“Privately, some of the players said the new jerseys were too snug. So the Flyers are ordering them two sizes larger than usual for most players. Nice to know the Edge system is being subverted before the season even starts.

    “OZOLINSH INVITED TO SHARKS CAMP.

SAN JOSE SHARKS/SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: both report UFA defenceman and one-time Sharks defenceman Sandis Ozolinsh has been invited to the team’s training camp on a tryout basis.

Spector’s Note: Hat tip to GJ Berg and “Maggie” for the Sharks team page link.”

Maybe they will pay a good price for the likes of Pock or Hutchinson.

  19. I haven’t gotten to see a lot of the new uniforms yet but Drury just looks terrible in his. He looks like a middle-aged mother who is no longer breast feeding. The new tighter fit makes these guys look like pears. The tapered chest makes their hips look wide due to their hockey pants. The ventilator arm-pits screw up the angle of the logo. I would have rather seen them put the Rangers shield logo on the front rather then screw up the lettering. Normally I would prefer the lettering to the shield but not under these circumstances. I also don’t like the bottom of the jersey. Hey, can you guess if I am going to run out and buy one or not??!?

  20. You would think all these professional sports leagues, today, would fold their tent were it not for their annual “merchandising” campaigns. When we as fans and customers stop buying the new junk they peddle every year, maybe they will get the message that we are not as stupid and gullible as they think. How can anyone spend money on the new Rangers design? That just tells MSG the ticket prices are not too steep.

  21. Im pretty sure (if you look at the picture) that the jersey is kind of tugged down on Drury’s right shoulder (if you look at the lighter shade blue on the top of the shoulder, it is clearly lower on that side) and it is giving the illusion that the ‘R’ is actually a little lower than if it was straightened out.

It is a little tight though, and with Drury’s face, it really does look like he is the big kid in Peewee hockey. Whoever mentioned Drury’s perpetual look of surprise had me dying..

Still I do see a few positives to the Jersey, one being for the guys that get into fights, there’s gonna be much less to clutch on to and well probably be seeing more swings. Also who know, maybe they do give the bigger range in motion and ventilation as promised, to be honest, I was expecting the change to be more dramatic. I wouldnt want one of these jerseys though for myself, I’d rather rock a normal one.

  22. As I said before, be glad they went with Reebok Edge and not Nike Swift, which is supposed to do a lot of the same things but looks about 10X worse. I think the reason we care so much is because we’ve seen what kinds of abominations other teams (like the Islanders) have for their new unis (of course, terrible uniforms and the Islanders do go together pretty well).

As for the idea of new unis in general, I think that if it works better for the players, then so be it, so long as you don’t do anything too drastic.

  23. I hope the jerseys are our worst problem this season. lol

No offense (esp. to Humbick) but reading the analysis of the above picture is like reading a book about the JFK assasination. “Lee Harvey Oswald’s chin in this picture is rounded as opposed to the 1958 military ID photo where it comes to more of a squared edge. The shadow on his shoulder is inconsistent with the light. etc. etc. etc.”

  24. The picture of Drury, coupled with photos of the new jerseys that floated around a few weeks ago…confirms that the “RANGERS” logo is off center and therefore throws it off considerably.

Trying not to complain, at least they are generally the same jerseys and we’re not subjected to some idiots idea of a new logo (The Buffalo Slug…Fishsticks…The Canuck Orca…etc). Still, it’s somewhat annoying that they didn’t put much thought into keeping the letters straight.

BTW, the “perpetual surprised look” on Drury’s face is an awesome comment! Kinda reminds me of Luke Wilson.

Pre-season game Friday, with an hour long season preview before it…and then I’m off to Opening Night with my Dad who, at 64, will be attending his first ever Home Opener.

    Woo Hoo!!!

  25. few more thoughts on the uni:

    – the NHL logo on the necks = lame
-however, I like the smaller thicker “laces” that will probably stay untied as opposed to the long strings weve had for a while that most guys tied tight…. in fact the only player I can remember in th elast 10 years who wore his laces open/untied was Cullen…
-The lettering angle issue could have possibly been avoided by making the letters just slightly smaller than they are…they look too big/chunky/blocky for that tightened chest area, and it looks “fisher-price” to me.

-that rounded edge on the bottom, I assume was originally intended to be tucked….and they didnt change the shape even after it because evident that lots of guys were not interested in tucking…

  26. I think these RBK Edge jerseys are a disaster in the looks dept. So many teams have modified their designs for the worse, not for the better.

  27. “The “Râ€? in Rangers should be placed higher on the right shoulder, consistent with the way it has always been. As a result of lowering the position of the “Râ€? the “Sâ€? on the end of the name is too low, also. It throws me off.

Good point, Robby. Abject stupidity has also long been a bastion of manhood as well. Glad you’re keeping up the tradition.

  28. No offense taken Riche.. just trying to answer the 20 posts as to why the R might be so low as it looks to me like his jersey is tucked in the front to make it look like that. Guess I couldn’t say it in a simple enough way though..

Robby, I personally liked the 3rd jersey with the Statue of Liberty. I can understand someone not liking it, but to not like it for that reason is pretty ridiculous. Its not like its some Britney Spears or something on there, its friggin’ Lady Liberty. She’s really a symbol of our nation, not a lady, FYI.
