Colton Orr, offensive wizard?

OK, maybe not. But I will say the Rangers’ resident enforcer looked impressive in the first scrimmage of the day, netting one goal and driving hard to the net Joe Thornton-style a few minutes later. Amazing what one summer could do.

Meanwhile, the Ryan Callahan at center experiment appeared worthwhile. His line accounted for two goals, both by Petr Prucha. Hugh Jessiman scored the other goal for the red team.

The Blue and Green units are on the ice now…

*UPDATE, 12:42 p.m.:* The top lines for the afternoon scrimmage: Scott Gomez between Jaromir Jagr and Marcel Hossa on the blue team; Chris Drury between Brendan Shanahan and Sean Avery on the green.

  1. I’ll bet that was the 1st time that Colton Orr and Joe Thorntons names appeared in the same sentence.

This Callahan at center thing is entriguing…

  2. Renney just loves having 3rd and 4th line centers that are bad playmakers. He will make a ridiculous move like play Callahan at center, just to avoid having to play another rookie. Typical Hyena.

Sam, can you not post so many new topics and instead do updates? Thanks.

  3. “Mike Busto was removed from the participation list because of a poor showing in Traverse City”

    interesting

“David Kveton did not earn an invitation based on his Traverse City performance and has been sent back to the Czech Republic, even though he doesn’t have a team to play for there.”

    pure genius

  4. “Meanwhile, the Ryan Callahan at center experiment appeared worthwhile. His line accounted for two goals, both by Petr Prucha. ”

that doesn’t really mean Callahan at center is a success, because Prucha could score goals even with Betts. And anothor bad thing about Callahan playing center is it would take away from his terrific physical play.

  5. “– the guys involved in the action at the end are #48 Dubinsky, #53 Bruce Graham, #52 Dave Liffiton, #55 Anisimov, #56 Sauer, #59 Sanguinetti. #18 is Bourret, #17 is Smith. That’s Montoya in net. Be patient — the file is 16 MB.”

  6. “The big guns were on the ice for their first practice session of camp. As expected, Jagr lined up with Gomez and Hossa, and Drury centered Avery and Shanahan. The latter trio, which looks like a natural combination, lit up Henrik Lundqvist”

man, I don’t trust Lundqvist with a long term contract, he likes partying too much and likely drinks a lot and maybe does some drugs.

  7. “Darius Kasparaitis, despite looking to be back in good shape, struggled mightily with the puck just about every time he touched it.”

    that sucks

“Amazing what one summer could do.”

maybe it was due to more icetime.

  8. DOES ANYONE REALIZE THAT BY LETTING CALLAHAN PRACTICE AT CENTER MAKES IT APPEAR TO BE AN OPEN SLOT AT WING. WHICH WILL GET BOURET AND DAWES WORKING HARDER TO MAKE THE BIG CLUB. PLAYERS NEED TO KNOW THEY HAVE A SHOT AT MAKING A SPOT ON THE ROSTER. RENNEY IS A SMART MAN HE KNOWS WHAT HES DOING. ALL YOU ARMCHAIR COACHES SETTLE DOWN, I THINK BY NOW WE ALL KNOW TOM KNOWS WHAT HES DOING.

  9. “Ditto Gerry,
Maybe he wants to bring back Bryan Trottier”

typical moron Rangers fans–choosing lesser of 2 evils is still evil. I want a good coach, not an idiot blabber mouth who will bench you if you don’t laugh at his “subtle” jokes. Malik must be the one who laughs the loudest, so Renney keeps him for his own ego.

Sure Renney is much better than Trottier, who was probably one of the worst coaches ever, but that doesn’t make Renney a good coach.

Why does this organization have such a low standard for coaches? Look at the Devils always firing coaches, trying always to get someone better. They don’t settle for a guy that gets them to playoffs they want him to squeeze every point/goal possible out of the team.

  10. “DOES ANYONE REALIZE THAT BY LETTING CALLAHAN PRACTICE AT CENTER MAKES IT APPEAR TO BE AN OPEN SLOT AT WING. WHICH WILL GET BOURET AND DAWES WORKING HARDER TO MAKE THE BIG CLUB. yes, I also realise that Dawes is not really effective in NHL, especially on the 4th line centered by idiot Betts.

  11. WHO SAID 4TH LINE, AS FAR AS I KNOW CALLAHAN PLAYED 3RD LINE IF NOT 2ND LINE AT THE END OF THE YR. WHICH MEANS THERE WILL BE THE SAME SPOTS OPEN. POINT IS THE BEST PLAYER GETS THE SPOT. WHETHER IT DUBINSKY, ANISIMOV, BOURRET OR DAWES.

  12. My sources tell me that Right Wing Fascist will be run over by an automobile in the near future.
The crash will immediately be followed by a parade and the releasing of doves.

  13. J LO, it looks like Hossa will be on top 3 lines, that means the only spot open will be on 4th line.

” POINT IS THE BEST PLAYER GETS THE SPOT.”

only in a perfect world. So keep dreaming.

  14. ORR Knocks Right Wing Fascist Out, Robby Bonfire Starts to Pout & Malik Prances But Hollweg Does the Dances!!! Bow Chicka Wow Wow on

This is why Orr Kicks Yin Yang. Hollweg has nothing on him.

    RWF

In the words of that guy in 40 year old virgin…which you probably are…Go fugg a goat!!

I think its a good move…Bourret and Korp and Dawes etc, all realize they have more of a shot now. If Dubi or Arie doesnt make the team then that will suck in a small way, but if it means Bourret making the team…Hey i got no problem with that.

And we can put Hoss on 4th and put Bourret on 3rd or 2nd. The friggin lines get switched every ten seconds anyway.

But so far i like what im hearing about the Shanahan – Drury – Avery line.

LOL and Avery trying to bait Marc Staal…Avery’s the man. Gotta give Staal a hard time in camp.

  15. Dude for one the Cold Wars over. So either move to China or get a new name. For two, have you ever in your life, even once, put on a pair of skates. Your nonstop ramblings show you to be so incredibly clueless about the game that it is remarkable that you would spend the majority of your day on a blog bitching and moaning about a first practice of training camp. Get a life, get a hobby, find a woman. Do something. Just stop wasting everyones time.

  16. Actually to boost my hockey knowledge I now wear a pair of skates whenever I go take a shower. And to add more hockey IQ to my posts I wear a pair of goalie catching gloves while posting messages here.

  17. THIS IS QUITE COMICAL HOW A SEMI EDUCATED OUT CAST GETS HIS KICKS OFF BY BREAKIN BALLS IN A HOCKEY BLOG. THIS GUYS PROBABLY HOME WITH HIS MOTHER HIGH HEELS AND LIP STICK ON TRYIN TO GET US ALL FIRED UP. PLEASE MOVE ON JACKO.

  18. hockeymanrangers on

Why are some of you getting your panties all in a bunch??? For god sakes this is the first real day of practice NO ONE AND MEAN NO ONE knows who is going where yet. And after a few more practices we might have some idea and then Renny will change them again ANYWAY. We may finally know after a the first couple of real games. RELAX FOLKS

  19. “somebody needs to get this idiot coach out of here, he just screws things up. Only blind and naive fans see him as a good coach.”

ignorant fool. this is training camp. this lines aren’t set in stone, it’s always nice to try something new. You’re obviously one of those “blind and naive fans”.

  20. Blue Clue, I just love idiots that don’t have a sense of humor.

“THIS IS QUITE COMICAL HOW A SEMI EDUCATED OUT CAST GETS HIS KICKS OFF BY BREAKIN BALLS IN A HOCKEY BLOG.”

I can’t believe these retards. Why are there so many dumb Rangers fans here?

  21. “ignorant fool. this is training camp. this lines aren’t set in stone, it’s always nice to try something new. You’re obviously one of those “blind and naive fansâ€?.”

I am sick and tired of Renney trying to drive a square peg into a triangle hole all the time. He does it always, whether it is preseason, regular season or playoffs. He is and always will be an idiot.

  22. ORR Knocks Them Out, Jagr Starts to Pout & Prucha Gets the Chances But Hollweg Does the Dances on

Why is everyone talking to this loser. Just ignore the guy.

Whats the point in talking to a pedophile who has a hard on for NYR’s kids.

Ignore the moron, Hockey seasons almost here.

The question….Who will Orr knock out first??

  23. So here’s a recap of what we’ve learned today:

1.Callahan never was a center. No wait, maybe he played a little, mostly wing though, but we have no proof, so it’s ridiculous to even consider trying him at center.

    2. Renney is an idiot for trying something new on the 1st day of camp.

    3. We have low standards of coaches. Yes, let’s fire the first coach to get us in the playoffs in his first two years after 7 years of futility.

    4. Henrik parties and is maybe on drugs.

    5. Prucha could score with anyone, er, except Shanahan and Cullen for the first 20 games last year.

Folks, I feel smarter than a 5th grader!

Oh, Sam, I for one appreciate the new posts so I can subscribe to the RSS feed. It’s especially helpful for ending pointless conversations.

And for all: It’s the first day of camp. The sky isn’t falling!

PS. J LO- Please fix your cap lock and QUIT SHOUTING!

  24. Orr- Your criticism of RWF loses credibility when you call him the same name he called Renney especially in a post where you’re calling to ignore him.

  25. I don’t think there is an open winger spot with Cally in the middle. You still have Straka to put somewhere. The line of Gomez, Shanahan and Avery is intriguing. I wouldn’t mind Straka, Prucha and Callahan either, with either Callahan or Straka in the middle. Sounds good so far.

  26. some things about your favorite coach Hyena

    1. played Betts on 2nd line last season
    2. played Shanahan on PK
    3. he adores Malik and Betts
    4. He cost us the playoffs with several seconds left in game 5 he didn’t put Betts and Ortmeyer on the ice
    5. He hates playing young guys and will go through all alternatives like Isbister, Krog, Ozolinsh, Dupuis, Strudwick, etc. before trying young guys who he often finds not good enough and sends them back as soon as he can.
    6. He kept screwing with Prucha
    7. I don’t know what he sees in Orr, Valiquette and Pock
    8. He doesn’t do PP the way it should be done
    9. In his system almost nobody consistently goes to the net or stands in front of a goalie.
    10. Veterans never get punished for bad plays, only young players get punished.
    11. playoffs before last, he not only played injured Jagr, he also gave him a lot of icetime. He is scared shitless playing without Jagr
    12. As Cullen saids, bottom 2 lines have very short leash offensively
    13. Prucha-Cullen-Callahan line was not scoring, yet he kept playing them together and we lost to Sabres, what a surprise
    14. Rangers were terrible first half of last season, only things saved them was the success of Lundqvist, Avery and Girardi in the 2nd half as well as playing a lot of weak teams with even more problems.
    15. Good coaches reward 3rd and 4th line players with more icetime and PP time, this idiot doesn’t
    16. he pigeonholed Prucha as bad defensively, instead of making him better by letting him kill penalties.
    17. he is too loyal to the vets and too disloyal to rookies.
    18. He doesn’t make the team play more physical
    19. He constantly makes bad on ice decisions and line combos
    20. he forgets to call time out
    21. he overplays some of his top players
    22. he ran Shanahan into the ground
    23. He is easily suckered into screwing up his lineup by using a goon
    24. I still don’t get why Orr played in the playoffs
25 What a joke of a PR stunt it was to “play” Dawes in the last playoff game
    26. He is constantly outcoached
    27. Bottom line is if there were no injuries last season, we would not have made the playoffs and if it wasn’t for Renney’s stupidity we would have advanced past Sabres.

  27. “Folks, I feel smarter than a 5th grader!”

but really you are just dumber

“1.Callahan never was a center. No wait, maybe he played a little, mostly wing though, but we have no proof, so it’s ridiculous to even consider trying him at center.”

where is the evidence that he did play as a center?

“2. Renney is an idiot for trying something new on the 1st day of camp.”

why didn’t he try Malik as Lundqvist’s backup while he is at it?

“. We have low standards of coaches. Yes, let’s fire the first coach to get us in the playoffs in his first two years after 7 years of futility.”

we don’t have a low standard for coaches? As soon as I criticize Renney someone brings up Low or Trottier or Muckler or Sather or Campbell.

“5. Prucha could score with anyone, er, except Shanahan and Cullen for the first 20 games last year.”

check your facts, and those 2 barely ever passed to him. Renney just couldn’t wait to cut Prucha’s icetime.

“4. Henrik parties and is maybe on drugs.”

that is what it looks like to me. I bet you also never imagined Kevin Stevens snorting coke with some hookers. No hockey players are angels they never could have any substance abuse problems.

  28. czechthemout!!!!! on

as much as i hate to say it,i agree with most of rwf’s 27 points.most of his posts are the ramblings of a raving lunatic but from time to time he does have a slight rational thought and he is able to make some sense.

  29. Looks like another season in which I’m going to skip the comments on this blog, what with the avalanche of comments by thumb-sucking idiots like RWF.

Gomez and Drury were quoted yesterday on BB as saying they were attracted to New York by the discipline instilled in the program by Renney. So the team and everyone in the NHL has the utmost respect for Renney, but some 13-year-old in his basement knows better.

  30. “Gomez and Drury were quoted yesterday on BB as saying they were attracted to New York by the discipline instilled in the program by Renney.”

translation for idiots–they were attracted to a coach that gives free reign to those who are overpaid. They were also attracted to the biggest contracts thrown at them, because nobody else was dumb enough to overpay so much for 2 small soft 2nd line centers.

Idiots will keep thinking Renney is a great coach, nothing I say will ever change their minds.

  31. I think RWF might be an Islander fan on the wrong blog. This is what they usually do on Ranger Blogs.
Honestly, since the lock out I see a pretty drastic change in the Rangers. I think Renney has done a pretty good job.
RWF some of these points are just plain stupid,
-IMO Renney didn’t cost us the game with 5 seconds left… Drury stole it, don’t forget he is the definition of CLUTCH!
-I don’t remember him running Shanny into the ground?
-As far as being suckered into dressing a goon, I specifically remember a story last year about how the top line players wanted Orr dressed. I also remember a certain NYR/Philly game where the Rangers got run all over the ice, and another game where that “runnin” stopped after a nice left hand to the head of Fedoruk. Thank you Orr!
yes, he was totally outcoached in a four game sweep of Atlanta,
Oh yeah and if not for injuries we would have also swept Buffalo, Ottawa and oh yeah the Ducks!

  32. RWF,
Your mommies calling, your apple juice and cookies are ready, get off the computer and get you afternoon snack.

  33. this is intelligent?…”translation for idiots—they were attracted to a coach that gives free reign to those who are overpaid. They were also attracted to the biggest contracts thrown at them, because nobody else was dumb enough to overpay so much for 2 small soft 2nd line centers.

Idiots will keep thinking Renney is a great coach, nothing I say will ever change their minds.

  34. I am a straight shooter, I say it how it is, without any BS. To say that Renney is a good coach because we finally made the playoffs or because he is better than Trottier that would be idiotic. I, on the other hand, gave plenty of legitimate reasons why Renney is a bad coach.

  35. RWF you can criticize his methods all you want, but it’s the results that count. Your entitled to your opinion but when you repeat over & over to prove yourself right, it’s boring. Calling people idiots is not the mark of a genius.

  36. translation for idiots—they were attracted to a coach that gives free reign to those who are overpaid. They were also attracted to the biggest contracts thrown at them, because nobody else was dumb enough to overpay so much for 2 small soft 2nd line centers.

    Sounds like BS to me

  37. Sam three words: Block – by – IP

He can change his name all he wants but he remains the same auto-fellating retard. Somebody above said something like “another season of avoiding the message boards…” truer words have rarely been spoken.

  38. SAM take this genius whatever name he’s using and let him tell Renney and the rest to their face what he thinks of them. And see how brave he is, & how good he does in a discussion with them, instead of just bloviating all day long on this blog. He obviously needs attenion and has nothingelse to do but blogging. Maybe you can get him a job as Bobby Granger’s alter ego.
