Rangers miss out on Peca

The center signed with Columbus. Here’s “the story”:http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=Aj7eoi6XJ9WearijURE1Lrh7vLYF?slug=ap-bluejackets-peca&prov=ap&type=lgns.

I’m still in golf mode a little while longer, and then I’ll be back.

  1. I consider the story to be “Peca misses out on the Rangers”. I think we’ll be just fine without him.

  2. It will be interesting to see who the third line center, and what kid makes the Rangers out of camp.

  3. The Rangers did not miss out on a GD thing! Christ, man, the Philly Eagles just dumped a former All-Pro MLB who has lost a step, at 30(!) years of age. This is the way to run an organization. Too many professional sports teams employ downside players on “reputation” and for their gift of locker room B.S. with the younger players.

Were it not for the salary cap, we know we would be entertaining the likes of Peca and Forsberg here, this year.

Great day for the Rangers and their fans, even if the media doesn’t get it. We are now THAT MUCH CLOSER to winning another CUP in our lifetime.

    YES!

  4. **Paging Brandon Dubinsky** **Paging Brandon Dubinsky** Third line center is now yours for the taking.

  5. Sam since you’re still in golf mode, can you explain how Tiger can miss the openning “playoff” tournament and have what the PGA Tour is doing be considered anything more than a gimmick?

Oh, and I’m guessing Peca going to Columbus means Dubinsky is the guy, or does the Ranger brain trust have something else up their sleeve?

  6. The only thing the Rangers lost out on was an injury prone 3rd liner who may have ended up a detriment to this team.

I would not have been disappointed had he been signed. For 1 year at a million, there wasn’t much risk financially. We will never know if Peca could have helped us; but giving youth a shot and possibly making a move for a good D-MAN (which I hope they do through a few demotions or trades)is definitely the way to go.

Now is there anything else juicy to talk about?

  7. Andy,

    1. Tiger never plays 4 weeks in a row. 2. The golfer who is number one in the Fed Ex Cup race at the end of the season automatically will make it into the second round. 3. Most of the players think the Fed Ex Cup is bogus and do not care because the 10 million dollar purse for winning is an annuity that does not get paid for 20 years.

Tiger hates Westchester but will still have his name on the cup at the end of the year.

Back to Hockey. It will be an interesting preseason and training camp for Dubi, Artiem and Pyatt.

Since there is nothing official to talk about anymore, how about this:

Assuming Commandant Sather says Kaspar doesn’t make the team (which could only be because he was arrested by the secret police or on a mission for the KGB in Hartford), we still need that stay at home defensman. And forget Jovo; it ain’t happening. Same with Markov. My suggestion: Ossi Vaananan. Anyone with me?

  9. The Rangers passed on Peca.. I’m sure Sather has gone through this process with many players that we don’t even hear about.. but for some reason Meehan and Peca chose to make this one very public. All power to them for getting probably a decent deal for an injury prone player, but NYR decided to go a safer route.

  10. I’m with everyone else here, I don’t think Peca would have been a step forward, but a step back. I’m thinking we needed a little space for the cap and D is a little more important right now. I’m all about giving the young guys a chance. The Blueshirt Bulletin has a pretty good take on why Slather passed.

  11. Thr ’08 draft class looks to be very promising, we could probably get a Kaspar-lite type of player that can absolutely shut down an attack, even deep into the first round.

  12. hockeymanrangers on

I am surprised to see so many happy Rangers fans?? I thought most of you wanted Peca, I however DID NOT. Glad to see a young’n have a shot at it. I am thinking it might be a few different players at first, until the line starts to gel then they might keep them. I am very glad they did not sign Peca, it might give us some more speed.

  13. Anisimov and Dubinsky will be competing for the third line spot and itself it’s very healthy for the Rangers.

  14. Doodie Machetto on

Everyone thinks that the spot is automatically going to a kid. Don’t think for a minute Renney isn’t going to toy with the ideas of Avery or Straka there. Something else I was thinking:

Suppose Hossa has an amazing camp and is scoring goals and gelling with Jagr. A remote possibility, but a possibility nonetheless. Jagr also loves playing with Straks, so there’s a possibility (granted, a very small one) of a Hossa-Straka-Jagr line. That would mean that Gomez or more likely Drury (better defensively) would be available for a third line center role. Imagine these top three line combos:

    Hossa-Straka-Jagr
    Prucha/Avery-Gomez-Shanahan
    Prucha/Avery-Drury-Callahan

  15. I was strongly in favor of taking a flyer on Peca if they could have gotten him cheap and it would have meant he was replacing Betts. But I’m fine with this result because it seemed the Rangers cooled on Peca right after the physical and interview which we have to presume provided reasons for caution. It was pretty clear when Sather disappeared last week that Peca wasn’t going to be signed. I’m also happy the prospects may get a chance though I do not believe it’s the real reason Peca wasn’t signed.

  16. Doodie

I’m talking about Kaspar in his prime, when he would kick ass and take names, and not be smoking reefer at the Beacon

  17. Doodie,

I like those line combinations, especially the last one! Prucha-Drury-Callahan could well become a classic checking-by-being-pests-and-scoring-as-a-result line.

It’s been a long, long time since the Rangers have seen one of those…

  18. MATTEAU they were going to sign him. The anti-Pecas should send the CBJ a thank you note… Peca said talking about the NYR ..”They said they needed a few more days to sort through some things, but we said that just wasn’t possible. They had enough time. The deal was pretty close to being done. It was done, really. The coaching staff was on board with it” …from BB .

  19. Doodie,
I agree that the possibility of Jagr-Hossa-Straka is strong, but as we saw for the second half of last season, Straka wasn’t doing too bad on the second or even third line. It’s not that I’m saying Drury or Gomez wouldn’t be good on either line, but I have a hard time believing Sather signed both players to multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts so one of them can play on the third line.

  20. Doodie Machetto on

Bure, I actually said it was a very remote possibility. I agree that it’ll be hard for him to swallow a seven million/year contract for a 3rd line center. I was just saying it was a possibility, and quite frankly, under the assumption that Hossa-Straka-Jagr would atually produce, those would be my ideal combinations.

  21. We don’t need Peca and apparently 28 other teams didn’t need him either. His only choice was Columbus. I’m glad he found a team, but just think of how hard these young players are going to have to work to make the roster. This makes for a great camp and great competition. Whoever it is, they will be lucky to be on this roster.

  22. Imagination- what I think I hear you saying is Peca didn’t get done because of Sather’s arrogance/incompetence thinking Peca would wait around. That thought did occur to me as well but I’m somehow inclined to give Sather the benefit of the doubt on this one in light of the fact that no other teams seemed overly interested either.

  23. I said it a month ago, the Rangers are done dealing/signing until after pre-season. Then, I suspect you’ll see at least one blueliner waived and another demoted to Hartford. As for the third-line center position, it’ll be determined in camp.

I’ll sit by my assertions that Avery will be the third-line center. Flanked by any two of Hossa, Callahan and Prucha would be a great line..I hesitate to even say it, but I have a strange feeling Betts could get a shot there(Hollweg moves to center on fourth).

I doubt they’ll hand the reins to a kid, even in wake of all this touting of the farm system. But with that said, I’ll fall back on my aforementioned statement: the hungriest in camp will get the job. There are three HIGHLY competitive races for winger, center and blueliner that will play out then.

I predict the kids we see in blue next season will come down to Bourret and Dawes, with an honorable mention to Dubinsky. The blueshirt staff seems pretty resigned to getting guys at least some experience in Hartford, where they’re employing the same tactics and plays as NY, before they get a sniff in the bigs.

Bonfire – Welcome back. Stick to hockey, dude.

  24. I believe the following will be what the staff has pencield in going into training camp:

    Hossa – Gomez – Jagr
    Straka – Drury – Shanahan
    Prucha – Avery – Callahan
    Hollweg – Betts – Orr

Dawes, Bourret, Dubinsky and/or Anissimov could challenge for spots on 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines. Based on Gord Clark comments we could see Dawes on 2nd line with Straka either moved up to first depending on Hossa, or down to 3rd if any of the 3 not cutting it. Also Bourret could challenge for time in place of Callahan on 3rd or and/or Orr 4th.

  25. What everyone doesnt realize right now is that peca was close but the team wasnt happy with his results with the physical. I was all for signing him cuz he was cheap and for the 2 points that level 25 just mentioned. But if the medical staff didnt like his physical results then sather did the right thing. Of course peca and his agent will go public and blame sather for it

  26. In all reality, it really may not matter who, if any young guys make the team out of training camp this year.

Chances are, if they have a few bad games, or make a couple of normal rookie mistakes, they will be demoted in favor of either a new aging vet, or another “up and coming” prospect; and the cycle will continue….

  27. Robby Bonfire on

    “Stick to hockey, dude.”

Sorry if ANALOGY is beyond your educational level and intellectual scope. VALID analogy, at that.

Idea! You stick to scripting your own contributions, here, and I will do the same with mine, with or without your censureship and sanction.

whatever you say old great sage.

  29. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

I was taking to a few Hartford Wolfpack fans….and they are piiiiissed that NYR didnt sign Peca…

They were expecting to keep Staal, and probably Dubi or Artie…even though they never seen Artie play..

Marc Andre Bergeron is still available for NYR…Anybody think he’s worth signing?

  30. Bonfire – Better idea. Everytime you bring up the ludicrous idea that hockey has ANYTHING to do with football, baseball, soccer or whatever you choose to attribute it to, I point out how unbelievably wrong you are. Try playing some of these sports and you’ll understand this QUICKLY.

And your right, you’re thinking is beyond (and beneath) my educational level.

imagination – Thanks for listening. Keep it up and learn a thing or two.

Orr – They have too many defensemen as it is…why would they sign Bergeron?

  31. tdchi too bad you think sather arrogance makes you smart. He’ll be learning something new if tries his garbage with Lundquist. I’m not sure about you, you know everything already.

  32. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    TROLL

Everyone is telling me that Bergeron is a Free Agent, and Isles didnt re sign him….

    TDCHI

Im saying…if Sather is actually looking for another D man…Bergeron is really the only onei know of on the market…if he actually is…like i said…some people are saying he is…Then theres Markov who supposedly will be playng in russia

I think were set though…We really dont need anything else…Lets start this season already

  33. Introducing 2009 NYR

    Gomez-Dawes-Bourett
    Asaminov(can’t spell it)-Cherapanov-Prucha
    Dubinsky-Callahan-Drury
    Pyatt-Dupont-Jessiman

    Staal-Sanguenetti
    Sauer-Girardi-
    Kaspar(no kidding)-Baranka

    Henrik in the goal
    back-up Lefluer

  34. Where is Tyutin there comrade? I think the Rangers will try to resign Tyuts and Rozsival at the very least.

  35. “Too bad you think sather arrogance makes you smart. He’ll be learning something new if tries his garbage with Lundquist.”

Did I say that? I don’t think so. I think I said ‘the Rangers are done dealing/signing until after pre-season.’ You’re the one that keeps bringing up this dung about next season’s contract negotiations…

But while we’re at it, I’ll bite on your bait here: what makes you think Sather would treat contract negotiations with his star (and likely franchise)goalie anything like those with a 33-year-old washed up hack who has been on three differnt teams in three years, with whom you clearly relate? I’m not sure about you, but I think there will be a markedly differnt tone to those negotiations. And if you can’t see this, then it’s your own ignorance. Get real. Live in the now.

Peca is a bum who obviously didn’t care who he signed with as long as he signed and for more than he’s worth. He wanted to be on the Rangers because he knows they’ll got a good chance to go to the finals and he’s still looking for a ring. Well, have a nice commute to Ohio, Peca-head. Maybe you can watch his magnificent season unfold there instead of gracing this board with your pessimistic ass.

  36. “Where is Tyutin there comrade? I think the Rangers will try to resign Tyuts and Rozsival at the very least.”

    Joe,
Unfortunatley in a pre-season match-up that year when I “meant” to cross-check the opponent ( That crazy crosby kid) I “accidentally” cross-check Tuyten and knock him out for season. Hey Crosby kid is fast man!! Nobody will blame me.

  37. “Kaspar- I doubt youll be on the team this year, nonetheless 09. You should retire”

Just wait till preseason Go NYR. Watch me smack around silly Devils

While you are on the subject of not being on more than one subject, or others making analogous reference beyond your comprehension, tdchi – do tell us how GOLF, predominant here over hockey, all to often, is exempt from your little rant?

  40. The Stanley Cup will be at the Darien Ice Rink in Connecticut tomorrow from 10-11am. Ryan Shannon from Darien won the cup this year with the Ducks and tomorrow is his day to have the cup.

Felt like sharing if any of you wanted to go see Lord Stanley’s Cup.

  41. a thought:

Another possibility on Peca is this: I’m sure both he and his agent would have preferred he go to New York and help win a Cup. Sather may have been trying to dump salary (Mara) and got no takers, therefore the Rangers couldn’t risk taking on Peca’s asking price, and Peca and his agent weren’t about to wait around before Columbus changed their minds.

I think this is highly possible, why else would the Rangers have shown interest thinking they could move salary prior to signing Peca?

My guess is most teams have their rosters set and are waiting till after training camp to make moves and nobody was willing to take Mara’s $3 million salary.

Either way I’m happy not to have Peca. I want a kid to get a chance.

But for those of you who think the Rangers, if they indeed did sign Peca, would have had one too many chiefs and not enough indians. Well, the Wings did have a roster with Lidstrom, Yzerman, Chelios, Shanny, Hull, Draper, Maltby and they managed to do just fine. As did Dallas and Colorado with Borque, Sakic, Forsberg, Blake, etc…

  42. tdchi..” I’d advise you not sling boulders whilest living in a glass house. If you’d pay attention sometime instead of simply calling names when people disagree, you might learn a thing or two about hockey.”

maybe you should practice what you preach. There’s a reason you were born with 2 ears & 1 mouth, but you sometimes talk out your rear. …FACT.. the NYR were going to make a deal, but didn’t. The rest is a bunch of non-facts. Your entitled to your opinion, but don’t try to state them as facts while trying to insult other posters because you disagree, or don’t like what they say about hockey or the NYR et al. Then try to tell them what to do or say, & how to think by talking down with ego & arrogance, alias being obnoxious . Please tone it down instead of stooping down, and I’ll do the same…….Thanks.

  43. vogs …I think you’re close. Sather was being advised to sign him and might have. For whatever reasons he hesitated. Columbus ended up losing a center, and choose to make Peca an offer. The GM knows him from Edmonton. Peca & his agent called Sather Sunday & Monday , and their calls were not returned. They gave Sather a deadline to finish the deal they started, and as stated by his spokesperson,he passed. Why he hesitated and the rest of the stories are not really known. They claim they want to give some kids the chance. But they seriously considered signing a vet named Peca, and might have been outbid by the CBJ.

  44. Imagination – they werent happy wth the physical results if i were sather i wudnt sign him either…he was smart making him take it BEFORE they negotiated

  45. The Rangers could find a guy like Peca prior to the deadline…that will give Sather time to sort out Mara, Malik, Montoya, etc..

  46. Derf where did you hear that? I heard Sather’s men voted yes, after the physical & the interview.

  47. new york post sports blog…not a reliable source but it makes sense.

I dunno it could be anything – but whatever.

My biggest concern now is that he’s on bad terms with this agent now cuz he’s henrik’s agent too and come january – this could be bad.

  48. It was either the post blog (which i dont see it on now) or Steve ZIpay’s blog… i also heard someone say it on the radio either ESPN or WFAN…most likely ESPN since mike & the maddog don’t even know what a puck is.

  49. Great move, Slats. Now give the kids a chance and you won’t be sorry.

One or more of Dubinsky, Anisimov, Dawes, Staal… joining Callahan and Girardi… it’s going to be a fun season, guys. Strap on your seat belts.

  50. exactly….guys like callahan and girardi werent supposed to be the best coming into last season we discovered them and i know with all the promising youth we’ll discover more guys this year

  51. “There’s a reason you were born with 2 ears & 1 mouth, but you sometimes talk out your rear”

Yep. Nice olive branch, fella. Pardon me while I pull it out of my back. Did I once say something about “my sources said…” or that “I was dining with Sather last night…” or that my opinion IS fact? Nope. I didn’t. Not once. I call ’em as I see ’em. I try to back up my opinions on this team WITH facts, because that gives them an ounce of credance.

On the other hand, if your going to try to tell me Peca’s contract negotiations are going to somehow affect Lundqvist’s NEXT YEAR simply because of Meehan, I’m going to call you on it. Likewise, if you think the sport of hockey has anything to do with baseball, or if the Rangers are secretly plotting to trade Gomez to the Yotes, damn straight, I’ll disagree and ask you to provide an ounce of reason for your thinking. That’s called public discourse. Look into it.

But you seem content to sling mud and talk your sarcastic trash, which is fine because this is the Internet and it’s a free place; do so at your leisure. You want to call me arrogant or that I talk out my rear? Fine. Just don’t expect me to keep quiet while you or anyone for that matter posts nonesense that’s clearly not rooted reality…Now, shall we bury the hatchet?

And lasty, per your statement “But they seriously considered signing a vet named Peca, and might have been outbid by the CBJ”…He’s not a Ranger, good ridance, and who cares. I sure as hell don’t. Oh by the way, that is my opinion, just in case you thought I was foisting some fact.

  52. Robby Bonfire – see my previous post to you…I have no need to say anymore on this subject.

On this issue of Meehan, the guy is a sports agent. His whole job is to A. get the best contract for his client; and B. keep his client happy. He’s a professional who is ranked as one of the best agents in the league. Do you think he’s going to let sour grapes get in the way? Maybe? Well, read this:

“Meehan is a determined bargainer, but he still counts many general managers among his closest friends – he even went into business with former Montreal Canadiens’ GM Serge Savard as a part owner of some of Savard’s hotel holdings.
‘The best deal is one that leaves both sides satisfied,’ says Meehan. ‘At the end of the day, I think I’m respected as someone who is tough, but fair.’ He doubts that GMs could accuse him of asking for more than his clients merit, based on their abilities and what comparable players are earning. ‘[GMs] might say, ‘He is asking for more than we want to pay his player,’ but I don’t think they can say I’m asking for an unfair price.'”

…published by McGill, his alma mata in 2003. Read the rest of the article here:

    http://www.mcgill.ca/news/2003/fall/meehan/

Sure doesn’t sound like the guy would let a personal gripe get in the way of a contract negotiation, especially when it’s with a differnt player.

  53. tdchi what I disagreed with is your claim that the NYR were done dealing. You said it a month ago and came back yesterday & said I told you so. A DEAL fell thru. so that does not make your statement correct. They weren’t done dealing that’s a fact contary to your opinion. And I doubt they will confine themselves to wait until after preseaon, that’s an opinion not a fact . I called you on it with the sage comment, and you tell me keep listening to learn a thing or two. To your mind that makes me sarcastic. What do you call saying to Robby ..”And your right, you’re thinking is beyond (and beneath) my educational level.” ?
You can call me on my opinion about what Meehan might do, but neither you nor I can back it up with facts since it’s in the future. That’s a fact.

  54. imagination:

The Peca fiasco wasn’t a deal that fell through. The Rangers never contacted Peca. It was Peca who contacted the Rangers and said “I want to play here, and you need me”. Then he announced to the media that the Rangers were trying to work out a deal. The Rangers never once confirmed that. All they said was that they were giving him a physical exam.

Since Meehan and Sather are buddies, it could have been a ploy (with Sather’s consent) to try to bid up Peca’s value to other teams. From the way it shook out, it looks like Columbus took the bait.

But once the Peca camp gave Sather a deadline to sign him, I knew it was all over. Sather doesn’t accept deadlines, he gives them.

This was a one-way courtship and it ended well for the Rangers. It’s about time.

  55. In Wednesday’s New York Post: “Rangers GM Glen Sather decided yesterday not to make a contract offer to two-time Selke Trophy winner Mike Peca – even after bringing him to New York for a physical and interviews last week.”

Yep. That sounds like a deal alright. Deals are when there’s a contract on the table (ie. “contract offer”) and a pair of parties are ready to sign them. NEGOTIATIONS are when a player’s agent contacts a team, the team shows interest and they beging discussing terms.

“They weren’t done dealing that’s a fact contary to your opinion.” Lets see…the team’s roster is the same as it was when I last made the statement; that, jack, is a fact. And I’ll again opine that it stays that way until camp in three weeks.

YOU said there was a deal; perhaps YOU took root in a rumor fanned by a bunch of sportswriters, bored over the slow summer months, looking to fill copy quotas, and who basically said ‘a deal was imminent’…then the blogosphere catches hold of it and calls it a ‘done deal’ giving people like you a chance to say ‘a deal fell through.’ Do you think they were at the table staring down a contract when Sather abruptly pushed his chair away from the table and went on vacation?

Your problem is that you keep choosing which “facts” you want to believe, when many of them are the same opinions you feel prime to castigate me for. Frankly, until the ink is dry on a contract, or a trade, it’s largely opinion anyway; especially on the blogosphere. Like I said, say what you want, it doesn’t matter to me. The Internet is a free place. I just never believed they would sign him, as per my statement above and last month. For some reason this rankles you in some bizzare way.

On another note…notice the BJs announced the signing BEFORE giving Peca a physical. In contrast, The Rangers brought him to NY without an announcement of any kind(except by the bloggers), checked him out, then cooled all the wildfire rumors precipitously…hmmm…maybe it’s because they were never sold on signing him in the first place?

And for the sake of futhering Peca-gate, let’s revisit your favorite flavor of the month here for a minute. Peca, it seems, was so psyched to join the Rangers that he actually expressed remorse this week for NOT REJOINING THE MAPLE LEAFS. His interview with Sun Media: “I really wanted to win a Stanley Cup with my home- town team,” said Peca, who undergoes a physical in Columbus today. “It would have been great to be in Toronto with Jason [Blake] but we talked all summer and he knew it was unlikely.”

  56. baron call it what you will, I call it a deal that fell thru. They brought him into NY, and announced thru a spokesperson they decided to give their young guys a chance. They were interested but backed out. Make up your mind, a ploy or a deadline to sign. They rarely confirm anything, but they did make an annoucement . You can use semantics & conspiracy theories. The fact is CBJ needed a center after Peca was interviewed, and they made an offer. I don’t see it as a ‘one way courtship’. He’d be a NYR if CBJ’s center didn’t go back to Russia. That’s my opinion. Sather will accept a deadline if given one with Lundquist, another opinion.

  57. Here are the lines I’d like to see….

    Prucha-Drury-Jagr
    Shanny-Gomez-Avery
    Callahn-Dubinsky-Straka
    Hossa-Betts-Hollweg

  58. Imagination- I agree the Rangers were interested and therefore agree with your point that there was a deal that fell through. The question is for what reason. You surmise that it was the Columbus need at center that casued Peca to get slipped out from an overconfident, arrogant Sather. That’s as good a theory as any given what we knwo about the people involved. But again I’m inclined on this one to believe Sather cooled after the physical and interview. When an employer sees value in a potential employee he moves quickly to lock him up- leaving for vacation was a classic employer move to put some distance from the interview, a clear signal of waning interest. But we probably will never know because all sides have an interest in spinning it their way.

  59. Wow…Still on Peca.

We really have nothing of substance to talk about anymore.

    Just grind it out people-
    Hockey will come soon enough-

  60. BTW, I am very surprised Laviolette didn’t ask for Peca instead of Cullen, considering that Peca would cost them nothing just money and only a fraction of what Cullen is making.

Also I think Rangers need to change their name, because Rangers have nothing to do with New York.

change it to Immigrants or Stock Brokers or…any other suggestions?

  61. Matteau! – I really like those lines that you posted. It would make sense to start it that way because Pöck and Strudwick can also play forward. If Hossa or Hollweg don’t cut it, then a kid can be brought up to replace one, with Hossa most likely moving to the fourth line and platooning with Hollweg. I’m beginning to think the only reason they keep Hollweg is to keep him off other teams where he could injure Rangers, unintentionally of course.

Name-changing troll – Are you sure you’re not Eklund? You change your opinions on players when they sign about as much as him. Plus, he is a Flyer fan, which could easily apply to you. Also, the Rangers were so named becuase the media started calling them “Tex’s Rangers” after their founder before they even played. He was gonna call them the New York Giants; glad he didn’t.

  62. from BB Lundquist said “but this is hockey. Movement is inevitable. My turn to change clubs may come, although everything suits me in New York.” lemon lou would like to get him.

    Hossa-Betts-Hollweg

Those are very close to the lines that I’ve been calling for, with the exception of Dawes (for his scoring touch) instead of Hollweg, and I don’t think that Renney would use Prucha on the 1st line… although I certainly would. I just think that Straka will be on 1st line, Prucha on 3rd.

    Straka-Drury-Jagr

Ossi Vaananan anyone? 26 and pretty solid in his own zone. Could probably be had for 1-1.25 million.

  67. Doodie Machetto on

imagination: good point on Peca and the Hurricanes. Very curious indeed. Laviolette is familiar with Cullen from his cup season in Carolina, but Peca was his captain when he was on the Island. I think that must say a lot about what he thinks of Peca.

Alright…..I want everyones final opinion on who should be 3rd line center

    A) Dubinsky

    B) Ansimov

    C) Avery

    D) Straka

    E) Any Free Agent Available or Trade for 3rd line Center

Im having a tough time but….I kinda leaning towards Artie…Just because a line with him and Prucha and Callahan sounds really good.

    BARON 34

I like our 4th line…but it wont happen with Hollweg under contract…And Orr….Yet another reason to dump Hollweg

  69. Baron,

I like Dawes, and I believe he’s better than Hollweg and Betts, but that’s the problem, he’s a 2nd line caliber player. His role isn’t to go around banging bodies and spark energy. I know his time will come, but until a top 6 player gets injure I’m not sure when it will be.

  70. Vote F) Wait until camp to assess each player’s capabilities

And like I said before, the 3rd line is the 1st checking line, so who do I think, of that list is the best shut down guy?

    C) Avery

  71. I go for:

    G) Pyatt

Who from what I read is the best defensive forward in our system…

Of course this is just speculation until camp starts and we get to see how the team plays together…

  72. ORR
I kinda leaning towards Artie…Just because a line with him and Prucha and Callahan sounds really good.
    ———-

I don’t get it, how can you choose a guy when no one here really knows how they play? Have you ever seen Anisimov skate, are you going by what the scouts have said, or are you picking a guy with a ‘cool’ name so you can have a cute little CAP line….?

What’s the point of picking now, they are still just names to most of us at this point.

  73. Doodie Machetto on

I’m with Rich on F: wait until camp before we start annointing the position. As far as I’m concerned, only two spots in the lineup are certain until camp: Jagr on 1st line RW, and Hank starting goal. Everything else is up for grabs. It’s fun to toy with possible combinations, but I could come up with A LOT of different possibilities (some even as far fetched as my above stated Straka as #1C combinations) that I would want to see given a shot.

  74. HOCKEYMANRANGERS on

Man are we starving for Rangers talk or what??? Putting lines together this early is really a waste of time. But I suppose b/c there is nothing else to do as far as Rangers or hockey we must do something to pass our time. I am not giving in I’ll just read what you guys are puttting together as far as lines and laugh later. WOW!!! Sam must be real busy with golf, that he one lined us about Peca and haven’t heard from him since. Is it October yet.

    SALTY SEED

First off take it easy….This isnt supposed to be serious…Were supposed to be having fun with the idea of WHO should center the 3rd line…Its alot better then talking about friggin Peca, Souray, Jovo or who ever the hell else…

The reason im picking Ansimov is because ive seen alot of nice clips of him over the internet, and 2 or 3 on BB.com,

The obvious choice is F) because that makes the most sense….but like i said were supposed to be having fun with this, not fighting about why Sather didnt sign Peca or Peca blah blah blah…

    Lighten up….

    TROLL

Im guessing your a big follower of Eklund…If so he’s saying, The Stars are looking for a back up goaltender, Ek says possibly Montoya…maybe your dream is coming true….Joel Lundqvist might be in NY….

If your believe him of coarse…

  76. C) Avery, because Straka can’t take faceoffs and will be 2nd line LW.

Superbad was a lot funnier than I thought it would be. Very good!

  77. “Cullen is 2 years younger and is less versatile than Peca.”

I’ll split the difference, he’s about 2.5 years younger.

Peca more versatile? Def not. Cullen can play center and wing, PP and PK, point on PP, he has a bit more offensive upside, and way faster.

Peca isn’t even a reliable shut-down center anymore. He can PK, but def no place on PP, doesn’t have a good shot, and can’t skate anymore.

    Rethink that.

  78. Peca can skate almost as good as Cullen, he can score, play PP and PK, big hitter, ex captain, provides leadership, good on faceoffs, good playmaker, great shutdown ability and is hungry from all the injuries. Cullen is just a feisty player that doesn’t excel at anything and takes too many dumb lazy penalties.

  79. ORR, just pointin’ it out:

None of us know shit about these guys. How can you say one over another? It’s picking names from a hat at this point.

    SALTY

I figured most here already knew about Artie and Dubi since those 2 are the top 2 centermen prospects to grab that spot…

On one of the posts on Blueshirtbulletin.com they had a few clips of Ansimov, there’s not much on Dubi…Except the games he played with NYR, and if anybody was at Pack games to see him play.

  81. “Peca can skate almost as good as Cullen, he can score, play PP and PK, big hitter, ex captain, provides leadership, good on faceoffs, good playmaker, great shutdown ability and is hungry from all the injuries. Debate over, because you just proved you’ve never seen either actually play.

  82. Robby Bonfire on

Injury prone Peca is going on 34, Cullen is going on 31. You bet the “debate” is over.

  83. How about Peca is a friggin’ Bluejacket and Cullen is a Hurricane and niether one is ever likely to be a Ranger in the future, so who cares. Debate over. If we’re going to debate these hacks, then maybe we should also debate whether Richter and Leetch will come out of retirement to skate on one last cup contender…and maybe Gretzky and Messier…

  84. DanTheRangerFan on

    Straka Gomez Jagr
    Shanny Drury Prucha
    Dawes Avery Callahan
    Hossa Dubinsky Hollweg/orr

  85. tdchi this roster isn’t set, so there will be movement before the regular season starts. And more than likely there will be a deadline deal in February. It would not shock me if it’s for Peca since some of Sather’s team wanted him now. If they’re in the playoff run, which they should be, that’s when short term vets get added. But I’m not predicting the future, just a real possiblity.

  86. I’m sure something will happen between now and February…I can’t think of a Ranger squad that looked the same or even almost the same from camp to the playoffs…my prediction is that all of us fans will be quite happy Peca wasn’t signed once we see his performance on the BJs…his problem is that he’s damaged goods at this point. The guy played the game like a power forward with a 5’11 frame. There’s a reason he hasn’t skated anywhere close to a full season since 01-02(honorable mention for his 76 games 03-04). He breaks down. My guess: Peca on the injury reserve by next winter.

  87. pghas
-No, I didn’t end up going. None of my hockey friends could get out of work and I didn’t want to go alone. I saw Lord Stanley this summer already in Toronto, but no worries… I’ll see him again in June!! =D

  88. Junior team Russia is now preparing for 8 games series with canadians. Anisimov and Cherepanov are on board. They had a warm-up game couple of days ago against a local russian club and Anisimov was the best player with 2 goals scored.

  90. Doodie Machetto on

Kaspar, you better show up in shape or those edge jerseys will make your gut show

  91. I’ve been thinking about the jersey’s, because they’re so much tighter, when someone fights another player and pulls their jersey over their head it’ll get stuck so much more easier! Hopefully our boys aren’t the ones with the jersey’s stuck on their heads.

Or maybe I’m paranoid from the heat. lalala

  94. I’m so happy! My Rangers are going to win the Stanley Cup, and my Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl this year. Life is good! (Except when your team loses, then it is unbearable.)

    JAGR PAN

There dumbest move was letting Hall go in the first place. He by far was the biggest disapoinment of last season…I actually though him Cullen, and Shanny would be a great line. At least he pretty much got us Bourret.

Modano married that Willa Ford chick…Lucky Modano, he’s the man…How does he do it, he’s 37 and she’s like 24 or 25, or something like that.

  98. I do think the Rangers are a couple years away, so I won’t back off on my original statement in that regard. Meanwhile, hope springs eternal.

Going with Staal plus about four other kids/rookies this year would accelerate the time frame. But we don’t even know if Staal will make the team, so long as Mara and Malik are still around. And people here keep talking Kasparaitis this, Kasparaitis that, which I cannot believe. Let’s see who actually makes the team, who gets banished to Hartford, who gets the pink slip, and who leaves via trade, THEN we can all better assess the club’s chances for success this year and beyond.

Oh yes, let’s see if Sather breaks his “washed-up veteran” quick fix regimen, this year, or if he goes back to the Dupuis, Krog, Mara, Strudwick, Kasparaitis, Ozolinsh, Isbister in-season acquisition garbage pail, one more time. No Stanley Cup prospects attached to that policy, if he does. Check with me in January.

  99. Robby believe or not, he was the one to put the thumbs down on Peca. While the cap is a pain, it’s the only way to keep Sather in check. Without it, he’d be right back to his regular ways. Those chants basically fell on deaf ears. He’s put himself into a corner of having to play inexpensive kids, unless he dumps some more salaries. At least he’s improved over the last to years, but those spots are still under his ugly sports jackets.

  100. I having a hard time figuring out what we should do with Montoya. I’m really torn… but leaning toward using him (in conjunction with one of our MANY, mostly average, defensemen) to get a solid blueliner. It really seems to me like we’re just one final defenseman away from having a real shot at being a good hockey team.

Maybe I’m wrong but it seems like if Hank had a real shutdown down guy out there in front of him… he’d put up a lot more shutouts and we’d win a heck of a lot more games.

Renney and company have plenty of options on the forward front to play with… hopefully they’ll figure out something that works well… but I really think the defense needs to be addressed, and probably outside of the organization (at least in the immediate future). Maybe Staal will surprise at camp and he’s it… but it sounds like he’s a year away still.

  101. Robby Bonfire on

If I were calling the shots, Montoya would be automatically penciled-in for one start, per week, right through playoff time. This way, Hank stays fresh for the playoffs, and Montoya grows up in a hurry with significant responsibility. Plus we find out what Montoya brings to the mix, so we no longer have to speculate as regards his actual organizational and trade market value.

  102. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

Is it true that, if we bring up Monty, we’ll be over the cap and forced to dump someone. Thats what im being told.

  103. Robby – I really don’t think Monty is ready for the show. He’s easily rattled, and once that happens, he gives up garbage goals. When he’s on, he’s on. But when he’s off, boy is he ever off. Valiquette ain’t going to win a Vezina, but he’s at least a dependable guy off the bench. He’s also a cheaper option than Monty, who I believe would command a $1 million salary. IMO, Monty needs to get at least one more solid season in Hartford before he vies for an NHL job. Last season was the most games he’s ever played in college or profssionally with 48.

Also, I’m really thinking they’ll give young Staal at least a half season in Hartford before bringing him up.

Riche’ – I’ve heard numerous people say Staal is that guy. Some have compared him to a “poorman’s Pronger”…and if you can get a guy with even half of Pronger’s tenacity on your blueline it’s a good thing…Not to mention, next season’s defensive corps will likely look something like this:

    Roszy-Staal
    Tyutin-Girardi
    Sauer-Sanguinetti
    Baranka

…an honorable mention to Pock, who may still be with the team then. That’s a mean stable of blueliners with both size, scoring ability and checking prowress. If Hank is still back there, he’ll be racking up the shutouts…

Until then, I don’t see a problem with the guys that we have. It would be nice to see at least one physical guy in the mix and I think Tyutin could develop into that next season. But to trade for that element when it’s just a year away in the farm system would be a bit wasteful, IMO.

On a side note: guess who else is listed as “in the Rangers’ system”…none other than Darius Kasparaitis. He must have found the fountain of youth in one of those vodka bottles he was hammering last season…

    TDCHI

If your talking about the 08 – 09 season, i highly doubt we’ll see Sanguinetti, unless he’s an injury call up, same with Sauer, i think they’ll both be injury call ups at that season and possibly the next, as for Baranka. Who knows if this guy will get a chance.

  105. Well, by that point, Sauer will hopefully have a year under his belt in Hartford. Now, I’ve never seen anything more but clips of this guy, but have heard he’s the real deal. Sanguinetti you’re probably right on. It’ll be the same deal as Staal this year: if he comes out firing, he might make the club. But in ’08, the only guys under contract will be Tyutin, Girardi, Staal and Pock…the first two will be RFAs as well.

    Tyutin – Girardi
    Staal – Sauer
    Sanguinetti – Pock
    Baranka – Liffiton

All led by Rozsival….That sounds pretty damn good to me.

  107. Yeah, Bobby’s got one year left. That’s why I’m sort of contradicting myself in saying he’ll be here next year. I would think it’ll likely be the same deal as Staal, where he’ll either make the team with a strong showing in camp or spend a half-season to a year in Hartford learning the system. Next season, unlike this season, I’m predicting there will be many more spots to fill, with Malik, Kaspar, Mara, Hutch and Strudwick all UFAs..but hell, it’s all speculation at this point. Half those guys might not even be on the openning day roster…

He i were Pock, i would have been long gone. He should have been a regular in 05 – 06…Then 06 – 07 he looked like he would be a regular, but then Girardi got that spot. Now before 07 – 08 is starting, everyone has Staal penciled in his spot. I feel bad for the kid but i like the way he’s handling it, signing a 2 year deal, was surprising. He’s good, im hoping if Mara or Malik get traded, he takes there spot…Then we can have…

    Rozsival – Pock
    Staal – Mara / Malik
    Tyutin – Girardi

And with Sanguinetti, and Sauer in the system, he will have a rough time trying to keep that spot if he manages to get it.

  110. Here is an Anisimov/Cherepanov update for all those of you not fortunate enough to catch the Canada/Russia game this morning.

After two periods of play, I’m ready to say that I’d be more than comfortable with Anisimov as our third line center. Dubinsky is a great kid but I’m seeing plenty of improvement from Anisimov since last year’s World Juniors. Last year, he showed flashes of brilliance but at times looked like a clumsy giant. I considered him an exciting long-term project.
A mere 9 months later, he looks NHL ready. I understand that he’s playing against kids, but this canadian team is loaded up front. Anisimov seems extremely solid on his skates, no more of that clumsy stuff. His speed is surprising, and he looks even bigger than his already large 6″4 frame. He’s been very responsible defensively and might be the best leader on the club.

As for Cherepanov, he’s been very unselfish with the puck, a pleasant, yet unexpected surprise. Although he too looks NHL ready, I’d feel more comfortable having him spend one more season in the Russian League before inserting him on one of our top two lines. He’s very Jagr-esque on the PP and dishes to the point every chance he gets. I would’ve liked to see him shoot more but his willingness to pass is a good thing I suppose. Canada is putting it’s best defensive tandem up against him so he hasn’t been as much of a factor as Anisimov(who is playing on a separate line by the way). On Russia’s 5 on 3 PP, the coach was playing Anisimov but not Cherepanov, a move that left TSN’s Pierre Maguire and myself scratching our heads.

In short, Ranger fans have at least two reasons to be excited about the future. Now, back to the game. The score is 4-2 Russia after two, with our two young guns not being a factor(for better or for worse) on any of the six goals.

  111. *Thanks for the link CML*

Kaspar looks to be in TOP NOTCH physical shape, but those vids don’t showcase too much talent that would signify NHL/NYR ready to me really…not saying he’s not, but those vids dont say much… shame, I hope he finds himself on another NHL team if we’re not gonna play him….

  112. Pierre- You meant 4-2 CANADA. I’m happy for Canada, but sometimes the homer mentality of the announcers goes a little overboard. That last penalty was clearly a penalty and McGuire said it was “for being too strong”. He had the stick between the legs of the guy.

  113. Pock sucks, the sooner he is traded the better and the brighter the future. Baranka, Potter, Liffiton and Busto are all better than him. I really want Baranka, Potter, Liffiton and Busto be given a chance to make the team–older ones this season, Busto the next.

  114. I agree with you on that last penalty, but McGuire kinda corrected himself afterwards by mentionning the stick between the legs. I actually found that McGuire was more toned-down and hence less annoying as usual. And yes, I did mean 4-2 Canada, thanks for the correction. And what did you think of Cherepanov’s play? I wasn’t all that impressed. I wish he would’ve tried to create more scoring opportunities for himself but I was pleased with his passing ability. He wasn’t trying to force things and it showed some maturity on his part in my opinion.

  115. Colorado Mark on

I only saw the third period, but I thought he showed some nice skill, but I don’t feel he was meshing well with his linemates. I don’t think he was benched. I think Nemchinov shortened his bench to two lines and Cherp’s line wasn’t that effective. Sutter seemed to shut him down pretty well.

PM might have toned it down, I just was a little annoyed with the “that wasn’t a penalty” comment. I thought he kind of corrected himself, but then said “but still…” afterwards. It’s no biggy, but I thought the call was dead on and PM’s comment inappropriate.

Anisimov looked like the real deal, though, didn’t he?

  116. Colorado Mark on

Jagr Panzer- What took you so long to declare him a bust? We’ve already owned his rights for almost two months!

The only difference is he has the same name, you change so you’re not responsible for your next set of comments on who’s no good, a bust, or the next kid is going to be better. Kids usually root for kids.

  121. This post has nothing to do with Michael Peca, but today I bought myself some tickets to the preseason game vs. NJ. I’m insanely psyched, and even though it will be meaningless, it’ll be worth it, because, like many other readers, I’d love to fast forward to the season already. And maybe I’ll be able to finally make a meaningful comparison between Anisimov and Dubinsky. Either way, it’s hockey and it’s the rangers, and that’s all I need.

  122. I knew Avery and that chick wouldn’t last. But if it is true that Avery tried to get with Paris Hilton, then I lost all respect for him. No self respecting man would want that skank.

Damnit i loved telling all the stupid Isles fans that Avery’s dating Cuth. He needs to get with another celeb..pronto, as hot as Jagr’s gf is…Nobody knows her, only in the Czech Rep.

Hayden Panettier just turned 18, if i was Avery…I’d get with that ASAP.

You have to think that they wouldnt last. These celebs need California, i cant see Cuth moving from there to New York and dealing with the cold, even though she’s canadian, she’s probably used to the warm puss weather.

  124. I have to be the first one to admit this but last year during the season I was one of the people on this blog killing Nylander for his circling around the ice and giving up the puck more times than not. I’ve been watching last years regular season and playoff games on msg and what stood out to me was nylander, especially in the playoffs he was the rangers best player on offense. I also realized that he was the best ranger on the team when it came to the shoot out. I have to admit here that I am a little concerned that the ranger organization might have made a mistake not bringing him back. It’s possible sather should have only signed one of the two centers he signed in the off season and signed Nylander. What i don’t understand is that Nylander signed with the caps for the same amount of money that sather offered him unless Nylander thought he could get more. Nylander had alot of chemistry with jagr and company. This was the problem with sather in the past when he would bring in all these free agent players and there was no chemistry. I guess time will tell.

  125. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha starts to Doubt....Dont know what thats About on

That play by Straka in last nights game, was in my opinion the best play of the season, unless i forgot about some other great play, but that was amazing, especially with 2 secs left, and all 3 former pens struck.

Hopefully Straka has as good of a start as he had last season, and hopefully he stays healthy.

  126. Tom G. – Bang on. Although I am pumped about Drury and Gomez, I have some of the same reservations. That said, it makes more sense to have two younger guys for a longer period of time. We can only hope that one of them shows similar chemistry with Jagr.

I do hope that some people recognize that Nylander was an excellent Ranger and even though he didn’t shoot as much as we would have liked, he was an offensive force and was by far our most consistent performer (and the most bang for our buck!). I wish him well, and am sure that Ovechkin will appreciate his playmaking skills.

  127. TomG – Nylander definitely thought he could get more, namely in a multi-year contract. He also didn’t think Slats would go after both Drury and Gomez, nor did anyone else for that matter…I liked Nyls while he was here, but ultimately, he’s getting older and it won’t be long, IMO, until he starts on to the tail end of his career. Not to mention, it would be ridiculous to lock up Nyls for three seasons, when there’s a chance both Jagr and Straka will be gone by 08-09…

But who knows? Frankly, I’m tickled with Gomez, a 27-year-old pivot who is every bit of the passer Nylander is. As for Nyls, he’ll probably be teamed with Ov and maybe Semin next season. With talent like that, perhaps he’ll keep his engine firing through his contract.

  128. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha starts to Doubt....Dont know what thats About on

BB has a Czech interview with Jgr, and he says he has a year, or 2, or 3 the most in him. He definently wont retire this season, i cant see Jagr wanting to retire when he has more then a chance to get his 700th goal and still be able to help out his team, unlike Jeremy Roenick who wants to play in the NHL just to get 5 goals to get his 500th, and he sure as sh*t wont help any team he siigns with.

Anyway, Im not to worried about Nylander…All im worried about is chemistry with Jags and Gomer or Dru. Remember, Nylander was a nobody before he came to NYR, he was not considered a big time playmaker, or scorer, Jags glorified him big time. Nyls might be good with OV but who knows. But if Jagr had the talent to turn Nyls into the player he was the last 2 seasons, thenim not worried about our 2 new centers. Like i said, just chemistry im worried about, i dont want us to have another Hall on the team, who plays a whole different game then what he usually plays.

  129. According to,
    http://fans.nhl.com/Groups/2007_Super_Series/

“The most impressive performance of game 1 is up for debate, with any one of these players putting forth a good argument: Sutter and his unflappable face-off ability (more on that below), Sam Gagner’s spin-o-rama deke behind the net or Alexei Cherepanov dancing around the offensive zone…”

  130. One of Eklunds cronies is now reporting that we are trading Montoya, Mailk and Kaspar to the Yotes for Jovocop and a forward prospect – no name given.

This would almost balance in terms of salary cap hits wouldn’t it? If Henrik signs a long-term deal and we get a good prospect in return then good/bad result? I dont know much about Jovo, but its a long-term deal, 4yrs and a $6.5m hit on the cap which leaves us with $20m on 3 players for the next 4 years – not much flexibility there if one of Gomer, Drury or Jovo is a bust on broadway….

  131. ON AVERY…

He was dumped by Cuthbert, and she ditched Avery to go with Hilton somewhere. And Avery had asked if Hilton wanted to leave with him but she said she wouldn’t do that to Elisha and walked away.

Wow is he desperate!! And it’s hilarious he got turned down.

More info is on sportsbybrooks.com and ok.magazine.com

That’s sad that this is the most interesting news right now. I really want camp to start.

how does this make any sense for Coyotes? They got 8 defensemen already. My trade makes a lot more sense: Gomez, Betts, Montoya, and Mara for Jovanovski, Reinprecht, Hanzal and LeNeveu

  133. Robby Bonfire on

    TomG –

My take is that Nylander definitely* (*apologies for the correct spelling) peaked last season, and it is always better to unload a player too soon, rather than too late. No way he is going to duplicate his stellar 2007 post-season performance, in 2008. I think if we monitor his production this season we will be seeing a marked falling off in production by Nylander, and perhaps time lost to injury, which all older players encounter as they slow down.

The last thing I ever worry about, as a sports fan, is a team of mine dumping a member of the old guard, in fact I applaud them when they do. TIMELY personnel-move decisions are made by the most skilled, perceptive, and capable organizations. In this respect the Rangers have joined the elite, it seems.

  134. I just hope Avery doesn’t get preoccupied with getting laid and partying. I think he’d be better off never talking to Paris or Elisha ever again.

  135. Orr – agreed twice…Lightning should rename themselves the Tampa Bay Icecapades with those jerseys…Frankly, I don’t understand what the deal is with the tight-fitting garb. Anyone ever see the made-for-TV(or at least I hope it was) Slapshot II? Getting around the fact that it was a ridculously bad movie staring one of the Baldwin boys…Some of these changes make me feel like the NHL brought in the figure skating coach from that movie to “change” the league…

…on chemistry, I’ve got the same fears. That’s why I’m hoping there are no more big deals in store for this squad. The team is already three-quarters different up the middle.

On Eklund’s rumor, I’ll say this: EKLUND. Enough said. What a walking mammary gland.

Jagr Panze – you sure you don’t want to just trade teams with PHX?

  136. Yeah…Gomez at his ancient 27 years of age peaked out at 25. Care to make a wager on that?

  137. Doodie Machetto on

Tom G., I agree, and noted it at the time that Nylander was by far our best skater during the playoffs. He was on fire.

As for his production in NY, it really wasn’t that much higher than it was in his injury plagued career. He’s always been just below a point per game player. We have just been fortunate enough for him to stay healthy for the whole season, something he has had a very hard time doing in the past. Granted, his point totals are higher, but only slightly so since going to the Hawks in 2000.

He was OK in the shootout. He was excellent the first year, but last year he was average. I think a lot of goaltenders figured him out and so his numbers went down.

The chemistry thing isn’t that big of a deal for me. Jagr’s lowest numbers (and really, his only low numbers, which still weren’t low) came in Washington when he didn’t give a crap. Put any competent center next to him, so long as he wants to win, he will notch at least 100 pts. I think Gomez will work really well for him. Definitely at least as good as Nylander. Plus, three other benefits for Jagr(and one for Straka):

    1) Gomez is a much better faceoff man than Nylander. More faceoffs means more possession which means more opportunities which means more points. That was a mouthful.

    2) Gomez is much better defensively than Nylander. This allows Jaromir to play even less defense than he already does, and REALLY focus on offense.

    3) Gomez can carry the puck into the zone with A LOT of speed. Jagr isn’t a dump and chase guy, and Gomez can carry it in and draw defenders. This will also help Straka because as Gomer draws defenders, anyone left will follow Jagr, leaving Straka open, a lot. It will also help Straks on the PP, so he doesn’t always have to be the guy that carries it into the zone. Hell, he might not even have to play the point (wishful thinking on my part)!

So, to sum up, I liked Nylander. I thought he was a solid signing out of the lockout (although, I assumed we signed him as a 2C, which is really what he is). But I’m not going to cry over losing him, unless I am proven completely wrong this season, but I’m certain that I won’t be.

Yea I agree with Chris F. I am a little worried about Sam. (spoken frantically) Sam please show us a sign that you are still with us, somehow, someway. And then come up with a system that when you do repost it sends us a e-mail so we don’t have to keep checking the blog and being disappointed when we still see “Rangers miss out on Peca”. Come on Sam you must be vacationing at the beach, but still you have to have access some where. Ranger news or no news???

  139. Hi all,

I apologize for not being around. Not much to report though. Ill update when something happens, although i have not heard any rumors about Jovonovski, Montoya etc. I was able to catch game 1 of the Super Series, i was impressed with Anisimov. Cherepanov was also good as well, but as you all know he was benched in the 3rd period. Ill be back soon, get along while im gone.

    Sam

  140. I got the fantasy hockey leauge up on Yahoo for those who want to compete. The rosters are a couple people bigger than standard leagues, and I am hoping for two extra teams, to make 14. On the Super Series, Canada is definitely stacked with so many 1st round picks. I’m not sure how many of the forwards can play defense though. Not necessarily any Selke winners there.

Bonfire, why the sarcasm with “I apologize for the correct spelling.” You really do think you’re better than everyone, don’t ya?

I’m not sure why somebody would want to post such nice things as fake Sam, at least I think it’s fake.

This guy is saying Devils are shopping Paul Martin, lol right after they just gave him a multi year deal…This guy needs to take a Mcsorley high stick to the noggin.

If anyone wants to know how slow Malik is…Watch the repeat of Rangers Fan Faves, when Malkin races him for the puck…

When i seen that…i started cursing up a storm cause i thought the puck went in…I blinked when it hit the post so i didnt know that it actually never went in…a minute later i came back to see Jordan Staal on a penalty shot. That was a scary night.

  143. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout & Prucha Gets the Chances but Hollweg Does the Dances on

The Kings have signed JS Aubin, as most of you know…Also it says on TSN that Dave Lewis AKA Hitler..has signed on to be an assistant coach. Lewis couldnt take the constant destruction NYR handed him…And when his team finally looked like they’d beat us with a shutout…Pock scores with 2 mins left…And Jagr wins it in the shootout.

  144. “I sent an email about mini plans and I was told they were all sold out already.”

yes, I learned this too…. I knew it sounded too good to be true….

My question is did it “sell out” already for the season, or is the garden just sold out for years already? I think the latter….

It was the one on November 25th, where Jagr scored with 8 mins left after he was boo’d for the entire game, lol they helped him out. And then in OT, Malkins tip shot nearly went into an open net but went right off the post in a vacated net, then then Jordan Staals scary penalty shot that missed the net due to hanks confidence. And Straka’s Game winning goal, where he steals it from Malkin who was nearly on a breakaway, and then puts it through a pens players leg, gains the zone passes it across to jagr, jags moves around the blueline and backhands the puck to rozsival as the pens player who was supposed to be on rozsie goes over to double team jags, then rozsi has a WIDE OPEN lane to shoot, but he passes it riiiight to straks who deflects it in a wide open net perfectly. Then straks looked like a baby playing with his brand new pacifier. Great game.

Someone on BB.com says that NYR signed Liffiton to a two way contract.

  149. “The NHL Line has learned the New York Rangers have agreed to terms with 22-year-old defenceman David Liffiton on a two-way contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Liffiton was a restricted free agent.

The Windsor, Ont., native has appeared in 3 NHL career games since the 2005-06 season, and has registered 9 penalty minutes. Liffiton spent most of last season playing for Hartford of the American Hockey League. In 72 games with the club last year, Liffiton had 2 goals and 11 assists with a plus-1.

He was drafted 63rd overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2003 NHL entry draft. Liffiton was later traded to the Rangers on March 8, 2004.”

    Thanks Blue

Good news, i like Liffiton, i thought maybe with Fritz down in the Pack, maybe they’d let him go.

  151. Liffiton is a much better defensive d-man that Fritz. He will see the NHL eventually.
Maybe like a more talented version of Purinton.

Fritz is just a big tall scary goon on skates.

  152. I wanted to draft Perron…

Anisimov needs at least half a season in AHL. He looks like he is not really physical nor very good offensively. He needs to be made better in both areas in AHL.

    Jesus…Russia needs to get there sh*t together…

That was a nice goal by Perron, and Chery made a sweet move under pressure but couldnt put it through the D.

    Grim Gomez

Artie looked bad, because supposedly he was injured from the previous game, Nemchinov sucks as a coach though. He should have put artie and chery together in game 1, Russia better come back and take a few wins.

  154. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha starts to Doubt....Dont know what thats About on

I was looking at Jagr’s career stats….And he has only had 3 full 82 game seasons….And 2 of them are with NYR and 1 with Pens early in his career…

That’s great…His first season with NYR doesnt count cause that was half a year with WSH….SO his first full years as a Ranger he hast missed a game…and only missed 1 playoff game i think..or maybe 2

  155. Seamus O Riley on

mark it down boys; Nylander becomes the NHL’s BIGGEST free agent bust. He peaked under Jagr; one of the world’s elite.

Prediction: 14 goals, 29 assists, and then his production goes DOWN from there each successive year.

I am tempted to lower my estimate for this year. Seriously.

  156. NYRich –

Ah, section 339. I grew up in that section – my uncle and Dad shared season’s tickets in that section for 25 years. Mine now are a little closer to center and directly opposite (so the end the Rangers shoot at twice). Love the 300’s.

Seamus, I couldn’t disagree more. I think he’ll have at least 65 pts, but probably closer to 70.

To play Orr’s game I would need to know line combinations. For instance, Prucha could be on any line, which will really affect his totals.

Over under on Jagr’s goals: 58

  160. What site are you guys watching the super series on?

Some of these posts are absolutely moronic. Jagr Panz, stop talking about trading Gomez. We didn’t get him to never play a game for us. And you want Steve Reinprecht in return??? You have got to be kidding me!!!If we are paying Jovo’s salary, it should not take much more if anything than just Montoya to get him. And what is this talk about Gomez being done? I pretty much agree with Doodie’s entire post regarding Gomez. Nylander was awful on draws and it made me so angry to see him out there taking them in the 3rd periods of close games. Gomez should help Jagr and whoever plays the other wing in pretty much every way and to say Nylander is better than him is just comical.

Spiderpig, I signed up for the fantasy league. I don’t think it should be more than 12 teams though. With the extra positions, that will force us to have to draft the steve reinprechts of the world.

Well, I see that saboteur / spy Commisioner on loan to the NHL from the NBA is at it again, using his PR department to prime us through the media for ANOTHER moronic NHL expansion. (Washington Post column, today.)

Two cities – Cowtown – a.k.a. Kansas City, a veritable hotbed of hockey fandom and savvy; and Las Vegas, which could actually become a decent franchise. Yet, AGAIN they are going to water down the product, and ensure the scheduling of even FEWER games between established, traditional rivals. And, oh the joy of following EIGHT phony mini-divisions of four teams each, as we know that four divisions of eight teams is unfathomable in an “equality of outcome” P.C. world. God forbid a team finish eighth and last in a sports league in these “modern” times.

Tell you what, Mr, Buttman – I surrender – you win, so let’s get it over with. Go ahead and expand to 80 teams consisting of 40 two-team divisions, with 64 teams in the playoffs, and a season playing from August through the raising of the Cup in late July. You have worn me down and out, Mr. Buttman, I defer to your “vision” for the NHL’s future.

  173. if buttman puts a team in Las Vegas, he’ll get what he deserves, a betting scandal. If he can find owners to cough up franchise fees, he keep expanding , lining the pockets of the current owners along with his own.But he’ll have more & more each year selling out or looking to move. The man wouldn’t know a hockey market from a flea market. Nor does he have a marketing plan to promote hockey.

  180. Robby Bonfire on

With basic SURVIVAL issues and ownership questions surrounding franchises like Pittsburgh, Nashville, Miami, Tampa Bay, and, I assume, a college town like Columbus (gee, I wonder which is more popular, Buckeye football or Blue Jackets hockey, on and off campus?) the INTELLIGENT approach would be A. contracting some existing-troubled franchises; or, at the very least: B. relocation of a sinking franchise to what little is left of attractive North American venues – such as WINNIPEG.

But no, Buttman wants to add more CANCEROUS franchises to the mix. NO ONE, not the Board of Governors, nor any owners, seems to see the Buttman agenda for what it really is – the destruction of NHL credibility and viability. Have they forgotten the “widen the nets” audacious sick joke, so soon?

The damn NHL desperately needs to get beyond this human version of Hurricane Katrina. WAKE UP CALL!

  183. Doodie Machetto on

Bettman doesn’t have to care about promoting the sport. That’s not his job. His job is to do what the owners want. You want to get angry at expansion? Blame the owners/board of governors. Bettman is just a pawn, a lawyer that brings their board together. It’s the owners that make all of the decisions. They could dump Bettman in the blink of an eye if they wanted to.

  184. Doodie Machetto on

And I forgot to mention, it’s the owners who vote on whether the league expands or not. It’s not Bettman making decisions unilaterally. I don’t think Bettman actually even has a vote.

  185. Except for the “widening the nets” fiasco idea, the owners have a track record of eating of out Buttman’s grubby little hands, and going along with him, on everything he wants.

Also, years ago, on national television, Buttman was raving about how, when the NHL expanded to 30 teams, it now had as many teams as did baseball and the NFL (at that time.) He actually thinks it is a wonderful thing to keep up with NFL expansion. The NFL is going to 40 teams in the next decade and will be bringing in the likes of London, Mexico City, and Tokyo. The NHL cannot afford to follow this lunatic Commissioner down this economically-suicidal path, anymore.

By the way, for you dip chips who get thrown off your little hobby horse when I digress on subject matter here, as I frequently do, my suggestion to you is to direct your little rants at the two hosts for this site who are in major default, and neither of whom cares about you to have posted here in the last eight days. 189. Doodie Machetto on

Robby, just because he suggests ideas to the owners doesn’t mean that they have to accept them. I’m not defending Bettman, I’m just saying that if you want to blame somebody, blame the right people. The owners hire and employ Bettman, they pay his salary, and they get to choose whether or not to follow any of his ideas. Point is, the owners are the ones making or breaking the league, not Bettman. Blame the owners if you want to blame anybody.

As for your insults of Sam and Josh: if you don’t like the blog they run, then don’t come. They are reporters. Sam is the only official Rangers reporter, and Josh is just help in case he can’t go. Sam also happens to be a golf reporter. Right now the FedEx cup is going on in golf, while there is a complete lack of any REAL news about the Rangers. It would make no sense for him to waste his time writing meaningless blog entries while golf is in the middle of an important tournament.

Furhtermore, since he is a reporter, and not an editorial writer, I have no qualms about him not writing daily if there isn’t any actual news to report. This goes double for Josh, since this isn’t his actual gig anyway. I read the comments for opinions, not the reports. That’s why I can’t stand those fan-run blogs, like Rodent or Bird. Why are they so special? Who gives a shit what they have to think more than what you or I, or Yenner, or anyone else for that matter has to think. The only opinions that matter more than joe six pack’s are people who have actually been in the NHL in some capacity, like as a player, coach, GM, or scout.

As for your diverging onto different topics, or anyone doing that for that matter, I’m all for it. This is a public forum. If someone talks about something that you don’t want to talk about, the sollution is simple: don’t respond to it. Oh no, it cost you another 10 seconds to sift through the posts you weren’t interested in! I got news for you: if you’re posting on this site, you’re not that busy anyway.

On another note, I was thinking about this yesterday on my way home from work: Adam Graves as coach of Hartford. Any thoughts?

  190. Doodie Machetto on

Alex, I asked the same question when they signed him, but I think they’ll let Straka keep his.

The good news is that we won’t be subjected to Malik with the “A” if Straka or Shanny goes down. (I hope.)

Your talking like an Isles fan now. Its one thing to talk about the same garbage once every month, but theres no need to bad mouth Sam, or Josh. If you really want non stop updates about nothing, then go to BB. I like it here, even if morons like Grim Gomez and yourself come in here to pretty much bash the team. Its still a damn good blog…And always has good news and updates before gametime. If anything, go crawl in a hole and comeback during pre season.

Your comments may be semi annoying, but seriously i never expected you to stoop that low, i expect that from the many forms of Yenner Mot…

Go start your own blog, see how good you do when you have absoutely no info on NYR, except Las Vegas and KC, which have nothing to do with NYR.

You should be grateful for blogs like this.

Orr, let me ask you something seriously: do you think your last post is helping things or hurting them? It’s just unnecessary to call people morons and tell them not to post non-Rangers things.

That’s the same for everyone. I wish there was some way to establish a rule. If you’re not interested in what someone has to say, just ignore it.

How hard is that? And think of all the bickering it would eliminate!

  193. Doodie

That logic if practiced would solve many problems in the world today; but people get offeneded and bothered rather easily.

Simply ignoring annoying comments is easier said than done-

All sab fans told me were…”were winning the cup weeeeee” then they get thrashed by the Sens. Where are they now. They have a GM who gets rid of 1st rounders left and right, no Druuuury or Briere, and there top center looks like an escaped mental patient who gets a concussion just by thinking about what he should have for dinner, and also they over pay a foward who had 1 good year, after a bad year. Who cleary doesnt diserve what he’s getting, and thats the Buffalooooo Sabresss. They got a hell of alot to prove.

Im definently going with the Nucks jerseys, they are the most depressing looking jerseys ever. UGH horrible. Then theres the girly TBL jerseys.

  204. Doodie Machetto on

hard to say whose are the worst until I see them on players. The way they are cut and fit on over the equipment could have a lot to do with how the logos and designs are displayed.

I’m still looking for feedback on my suggestion of Gravey as coach in Hartford.

  205. “That’s how old Nylander is now.
Gomez is just peaking and this was the perfect time to get him.”

What does Nylander have to do with it? Did we set Nylander for life by giving him a 7 year deal? Did we pay him 7.35 million? No we only gave him a 3 year deal at 3 mil a year. I am against gross overpayment, especially gross overpayment on the long term contract, especially for a guy who is so overrated. One of the reasons he is overrated among Ranger fans is that he did put up decent numbers against us for years, but remember what crappy teams we used to have.

“I don’t understand your logic….And how is he one-dimensional exactly?”

he doesn’t hit, he doesn’t kill penalties, has difficulty scoring goals (even in the ECHL), not a leader, not hungry for the Cup. All he is is a fast, soft playmaker. And his playmaking is blown away because of the ratio to his pathetic goalscoring, he isn’t even such a great playmaker.

Richter is going into politics. And he still has the syndrome, so I don’t think he can handle the pressure situations of a job like that.

Leetch is office material, definitely not a bench guy.

  212. Jovanovski has only 4 years left that is within a normal range. He is 10 times the player that Gomez is. He is a leader and a multi-dimensional player, he makes a million less than Gomez, and he is hungry for the Cup. Maybe Jovanovski is a bit overpaid, but not by much at all, he really is one of the best defensemen in NHL. while there are around 30 better centers than Gomez.

    Nevermind

i got the Hossa song. if anyone is interested its called Fiesta Mexicana – Rex Gildo

  215. Doodie Machetto on

OK, you think far too highly of Jovanovski. He’s already 31, so we’ll be getting the tail end of his prime and a year after it. Even during his prime, he has been plagued by injuries, so in all likelihood, that will only get worse, not better, with time. yes, 800k less, but for 20-30 games less too. He has only played in 70+ games in 6 of his 11 seasons, none in his last 4. He played in less than 60 in his last 3. Add to that that he is a career underachiever, and from what I understand, a bad lockerroom guy.

  216. Gomez

I mentioned Nylander to show you that a guy still in his mid 30’s is capable of playing well and being healthy.
Gomez is way younger right now and will only by Nylander’s age at the end of his contract.

  217. Gomez

I mentioned Nylander to show you that a guy still in his mid 30’s is capable of playing well and being healthy.
Gomez is way younger right now and will only by Nylander’s age at the end of his contract.

  218. Doodie Machetto on

As for 30 Centers in the league better than Gomez, I actually think you’ll be hard pressed to find 10. In fact, I’m going to make a list, in the order that I think of them:

    1) Lecavalier
    2) Thornton
    3) Jokinen
    4) Crosby
    5) Malkin
    6) Savard
    7) Datsyuk
    8) Spezza
    9) Sakic
    10)Sundin

Then there are guys who are better, but always hurt (Forsberg, Gaborik), but they’re useless if hurt.

Then there are guys who will probably be better in the future, but not yet (Kopitar, Staals)

And then of course there the jokes (Malhotra, Yashin).

And then just for you: Joel Lundqvist and Steven Reinprecht.

  219. FYI, Jovanovski is 31 years old, has not played in more than 56 games the last 3 seasons, has had 2 out of 11 seasons where his +/- was positive(I understand that he has played on crappy teams for the most part but still- 2 out of 11). Gomez, on the other hand, is 27 years old, has stayed relatively healthy his entire career, has posted a positive +/- in 5 out of 7 seasons. Yes, his goal scoring leaves something to be desired but he scored 33 just 2 seasons ago which tells me that with Jagr getting a lot of the attention, he can possibly get back to those numbers and score on some of Jagr’s rebounds and in close around the net. I know we are comparing apples to oranges here because one is a defenseman and one is a center but I am just trying to show Grimm who the more valuable player is right now and at this point in their careers. Do I think a guy like Jovo can help our team? Absolutely, but definitely not at the expense of Gomez. I really have a feeling that Gomez and Jagr together can really be something special.

  220. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout & Prucha Gets the Chances but Hollweg Does the Dances on

Does anyone know where i can watch Wolfpack games online??

  221. lol 31 is too old? Yet for Drury it is not too old, and for Messier and Shanahan 40 is still good. What a joke. And if he does get injured then we have plenty of great prospects in Hartford ready to play.

  222. Doodie Machetto on

I didn’t say they got it right with Drury (too much or too long, one or the other). I was talking Gomez. I also didn’t want to see Shanahan resigned either, so it’s not like I’m sending mixed messages. And I don’t think anyone thinks Mess’ second go round in NY was a good decision.

As for the prospects in Hartford, you’re suggesting that a third pairing guy (the most that any of the D in Hartford is worth right now) replace what would be a first pairing guy in Jovanovski.

And then you come back to the issue of overpayment because his cap hit is 6.5 million, but if it’s only for 60 games, he’s getting more $/g than Gomez.

  223. “1) Lecavalier
    2) Thornton
    3) Jokinen
    4) Crosby
    5) Malkin
    6) Savard
    7) Datsyuk
    8) Spezza
    9) Sakic
    10)Sundin”

and Marleau, Richards, Forsberg, Nylander, Langkow, Briere, Brind’Amour, 2 Staals, Cammaleri, Sedin, McDonald, Stastny, Drury, Bergeron, Kopitar, Horton, Koivu, Getzlaf, and many others who are more complete players, but maybe not going to outscore Gomez by much.

  224. Doodie Machetto on

I considered Marleau but that his production went up to that of a good center only after the Sharks acquired Thornton illustrates that he isn’t capable of carrying top line responsibility.

Forsberg is worth what, 35, 40 games if you’re lucky?

Kopitar, the 2 Staals, Stastny, and Getzlaf will probably be better than Gomez, but not yet. If Cammalleri can grow next season the way he did this past season, then he will be as well. But if this season was a fluke, then he won’t be. He’s getting to an age now where he’s gotta start being more consistent.

Bergeron and Horton MIGHT become as good as Gomez, but not better.

Langkow, Sedin, and McDonald can thank their chemistry with their wingers. Otherwise, they’re all nobodies. Poor McDonald. Look for McDonald to drop by about 20 or 30 pts if Selanne doesn’t return. Furthermore, I don’t think Langkow or McDonald are even comparable anyway, even with their chemistry.

Nylander, Briere, Brind’Amour, and Drury just aren’t better, no points other than that are necessary for them.

I’d say Richards and Koivu are about even with Gomez.

  225. Doodie are you some kind of Gomez appologist?

you must be nuts if you don’t think all those players are better.

Gomez is the one who has to be thanking that he got to play with the likes of Elias, Gionta, Mogilny, Niedermeyer and Rafalski.

  226. Doodie Machetto on

Gomez, do you at least hope that you’re wrong, and that the actual Gomez will thrive under a system that actually plays offense? Sometimes I get the impression that you would prefer the team lose and players do poorly just so that you’re right. Is that what being a fan means to you?

And what then if Gomez produces? What if he has 25g/75a? Would you be upset that you were wrong or would you be happy that he is doing well and was worth every penny?

  227. 2 seasons ago is Gomez’s peak, even if he improves on it he is still a one dimensional player. So I hope exactly what I said, that he is traded in a package for Jovanovski ASAP.

And why would he care to work hard at improving his stats? He didn’t even bother in his contract UFA season, what makes you think he will care now that he got set for life with 52 million contract? What makes you think he won’t be worse than Yashin? And you think he will try hard to get the Cup, you think he will go 120% in the playoffs when he already got 2 Cups?

  228. Doodie Machetto on

Being that he’s played in NJ his entire career, yes, I’ve gotten a pretty good look at him, and I see what kind of player he is.

And he never developed a chemistry really with any of those players that could be described as special. For McDonald and Langkow, especially McDonald, look at their numbers before playing with the Star winger, and after. Uncanny.

Sedin has been playing with his brother his entire career. I don’t think two guys have more chemistry right now than they do. And you were talking about not scoring goals. I’m sure Sedin’s whopping total of 10 puts him up there on your list, huh?

  229. Doodie, you actually know what you’re talking about. Gomez, you just spew nonsense out of your butt to try to get under our skin. I’m pretty convinced that you are not even a Ranger fan at this point. You sound like some bitter Sabres fan.

  230. Doodie Machetto on

Gomez, you didn’t even answer my questions: do you want to see him fail, and would you be happy if he succeeded?

BTW, hatred can blind you to the reality of a player, just as much as extreme admiration.

You’ve gotta detach your feelings from the players or you can’t look at them objectively.

I really overrate Tyutin because of how much I want him to be good. I actually can’t tell you if he’s good or not. I would say yes, but I can’t figure out if it’s because he is or because I want him to be.

  231. “And you think he will try hard to get the Cup, you think he will go 120% in the playoffs when he already got 2 Cups?”

This statement can only come from a person who has clearly never played hockey or competitive sports for that matter. You’d also have to have zero understanding of the mental makeup of a professional athlete.

  232. Doodie Machetto on

I want him to fail more than I want him to succeed, but either way is win-win for me or rather lose-lose since I didn’t want him here in the first place.

“And he never developed a chemistry really with any of those players that could be described as special.”

if that is the case, you really have to wonder “why?”.

“This statement can only come from a person who has clearly never played hockey or competitive sports for that matter. You’d also have to have zero understanding of the mental makeup of a professional athlete.”

it is simple philosophy, moron. The more you have of something, the lesser is your need for more of it, with exception of addictive things.

are you seriously nuts? They already are better, maybe with the exception of Jordan.

“Forsberg is worth what, 35, 40 games if you’re lucky?”

no, that if unlucky, if lucky he is 75+ games

“I considered Marleau but that his production went up to that of a good center only after the Sharks acquired Thornton illustrates that he isn’t capable of carrying top line responsibility.”

more capable than Gomez for sure.

“Bergeron and Horton MIGHT become as good as Gomez, but not better.”

    they are better already

“Langkow, Sedin, and McDonald can thank their chemistry with their wingers. Otherwise, they’re all nobodies. Poor McDonald. Look for McDonald to drop by about 20 or 30 pts if Selanne doesn’t return. Furthermore, I don’t think Langkow or McDonald are even comparable anyway, even with their chemistry”

Who was McDonald’s linemate? The washed up old Selanne and who else? Lupul, who stunk as soon as he was separrated from McDonald. Prior to McDonald, Selanne had 32 points in 78 games. Langkow finally got the top line icetime and he is way better than Gomez–he hits, and kills penalties and is a better scorer. Yes Sedin is a bad goalscorer just like Gomez, but he produced 71 assists compared to Gomez’s 47 and he is much stronger on the puck than Gomez.

“I’d say Richards and Koivu are about even with Gomez.”

no way, Koivu is a leader and produced big numbers on teams with little offensive talent. Brad Richards? Are you freaking crazy?

“Nylander, Briere, Brind’Amour, and Drury just aren’t better, no points other than that are necessary for them.”

Brind’Amour is a leader, defensive specialist, physical and produces more than Gomez. Drury, is a leader, and a much better goalscorer and kills penalties. Briere is more skilled and more productive–2 seasons in a row he put up numbers that Gomez can only dream about. Nylander is way more skilled, and has much better puck control/possession and offensively a little better.

  238. Doodie Machetto on

“And why would he care to work hard at improving his stats? He didn’t even bother in his contract UFA season, what makes you think he will care now that he got set for life with 52 million contract?”

Who said that he wasn’t trying last season, but when the coach says 4 guys back at all times, it’s pretty hard to score points. He also will have the chance to play with one of the all-time great players, a sure-fire first ballot HOFer. Someone he probably idolized growing up, be it Jagr or Shanahan. He’s a pro player. The game is his life. It’s all he knows. Trust me, he’s going to lavish in this opportunity.

“What makes you think he won’t be worse than Yashin?”

Yashin was a cancer and underachiever everywhere he went. The Devs thought really highly of Gomez, and if it wasn’t for the cap they would have definitely brought him back. BTW, the key reason why the Devs couldn’t keep Gomez is the contract they gave Elias last season. And kudos to the Rangers for making him that giant offer so the Devs would have to make something comparable.

“And you think he will try hard to get the Cup, you think he will go 120% in the playoffs when he already got 2 Cups?”

Absolutely. Once you’ve tasted glory, you want it again, and again, and again. Very few players stop trying after their first cup. Especially from that Jersey team. It was a culture of winners, and Gomez has that mentality in him.

    There, I’ve answered your questions.

You really want him to fail more than succeed? He’s here, face it. Management isn’t going to trade him, and with that contract, he’s not going anywhere anyway. So you didn’t want him. I can accept that. But he’s here. Why wouldn’t you support his success while he is? If he doesn’t perform during the season and you want to get on him, that’s one thing. But before the season begins, to hope he fails? that means the team will fail. Why would you want that, as a fan? If the team was composed of Bertuzzi, McSorley, Domi, Potvin, and all of the other bastard players that have been in the NHL, I would still want them to win. The glory of the team is what I would hope for. Put the vendettas to the side while he’s on your team. Otherwise, why root for the team?

  239. Doodie Machetto on

Dude, you’re obviously too biased to be reasoned with. You can;t seriously think that those guys are better. I can’t discuss with you anymore. It’s insane to try and reason with your hatred.

  240. “it is simple philosophy, moron. The more you have of something, the lesser is your need for more of it, with exception of addictive things.”

Wow, clearly I was right and you never have played competitive sports. Professional Athletes, along with CEO’s of major corporations, aside from being successful are the most competitive people in the world. They want to win ALWAYS!!! Regardless of history, how much money they have made or are making, they are constantly striving for more and more. You said the exception is addictive things. Hey genius, for professional athletes, WINNING IS AN ADDICTION! There is a reason why they got to where they are in the first place and that is because they do not settle for second best. It is not philosophy, it is psychology. Read some material on the psychology of professional athletes before you talk out of your ass again. You clearly cannot be any older than 15 or so because your posts clearly display your lack of life experience and knowledge.

I think he returns back to his “norm” years, before Jagr. Then, add in his age. Then add in the fact that he is USED to playing Jagr’s style. I think he is really going to have a rough season. He may even do better the following year; as he adjusts.

It will be interesting to watch…..lets revisit this after the first month of the season and then again at the midpoint…should be fun.

  247. ok keep thinking that jovo is ur “missing piece to the cup” — u sound like neil smith…go get the old garbage and keep thinking they’ll give you something.

  248. Centering Ovechkin, Nylander should score more than with Jagr. People were saying that Savard was the product of Kovalchuk, look how wrong those morons are.

  249. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Doubt & Prucha Gets the Chances But Hollweg Does the Dances on

    Grim

Man you are a whiner, since you love throwing questions around…here’s one.

WHY DO YOU EVEN LIKE THE RANGERS IF YOU DONT LIKE THERE TEAM??

Just watch the Yotes or the Wolfpack, you and your whiner buddy Robby

  250. Perfect, NYR just made a trade to Phoenix, and its not Jovo. This is Per TSN

NYR gives up Montoya, Jessiman for Morris, 08 2nd round pick, and a foward prospect.

Stupid trade, I can understand Monty but why Jess

  251. No effense Chris, but I need proof of trades before I believe it. TSN.ca/nhl doesn’t have any news on that trade yet.

  252. If thats true, its awful. That is not the type of defenseman we need at all. Not much different from Rozi, Pock, Tyutin.

  253. “does anyone remember that post Kaspar made where he talked about his phone conversation with Sather and then blamed it on Malakhov? Someone find it for me, it was hysterical”

    Comrade Doodie, I think I remember;

I called Slats to complain about nasty things he said about Avery during arbitration
“Why you say not nice things about avery?” I ask
“Who is this speaking?” Sather say
“It’s me boss! Kaspar from Hartford”
“Listen” he says, “your lucky you didn’t go to arbitration. Just take your 3 million,go play with the kids and don’t piss me off dumkoff”
I say “I just kidding, this is not Kaspar. This that guy Malakov. Goodbye”

  254. Doodie , for some reason, it says my comment is “awaiting moderation.” I have the Kaspar topics. I took out the URLs this time so maybe it would work:

Doodie – there are some pretty good comments from “SANDIS on 2007/07/18/raise-your-hand-if-youre-confused/

NICE, I found the one you’re talking about by searching on Yahoo. Brilliant! 2007/07/31/rangers-lock-up-hossa/

What’s the score of Game 3…I cant get the vid to work so i cant watch the game….And TSN is saying Chery is still in the hospital with a concussion, hopefully not to serious.

Sutter better get suspended. That was a dirty shot, and to the back of the head no less. If i were there id throw an elbow at his orbital bone.

  256. There is NOTHING more pathetic than Icelander fans or Devils fans like “GRIM GOMEZ” who come onto the blog of a team and PRETEND to be a fan of that team and then make hyper critical comments.

    Sad and pathetic.

  258. Hahaha…nice Salty – i cant believe theres over 350 comments here…this is the most boring time of the year for us hockey fans

  259. Did Sam get hit by a golfcart? He could give us some kind of an update. Its not that hard, Im sure he could tell us something.

  260. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout & Prucha gets the Chances But Hollweg Does the Dances on

We might hit 500 comments before Sam comes back.

I still think either Anisimov or Dubinsky should get that spot, or Pyatt and Dupont of coarse.

As long as Cally and Prucha are playing with Artie or Dubi, ill be happy.

  261. I give the older ones the benefit of the doubt–Dubinsky, then Barnes, then Pyatt, then Anisimov.

But with Anisimov there is a chance he runs back to Russia if he doesn’t play in NHL, so I would call him up around January to take Betts’ spot on 4th line. If he impresses then he gets more icetime maybe.

I bet Sutter is trying to prove himself to Lou Lammou “Your Foy’er’d” Rello. That A**hole, this is him, trying to suck up to the NJD organization. I never thought of it that way.

This is from Blueshirtbulletin.com if anyone is interested and has not read it.

Adding injury to injury, Artem Anisimov was forced to leave today’s Super Series Game 3 with an apparent knee injury after an uncalled knee on knee hit from Colton Gillies, another relative of a former Islander. The Canadians, conntinuing to play an (ahem) physical game, were already down a man and on a delayed penalty call for a second man, so Gillies was unpenalized on the play by the generous referees. Anisimov had already told Sovietski Sport that “after two matches of the Canadian part of the series I will leave for the Rangers training camp,” which would get him to Traverse City in time for the Prospect Tournament. Meanwhile, Alexei Cherepanov is out of the series with a concussion, having been held for hospitalization, according to TSN (confirmed by reports from Russia). Three other Russians have been injured in the three games. Canada won Game 3 this morning by a 6-2 score to take a 3-0 lead in the series — see game stories here, here, and here. Thanks again to Laurie for translating stories from Russian

  266. Can anyone confirm: Artem Anisimov was knocked out of today’s Super Series match-up (game # 3) with an injury. I received a link to a recap of the game from a friend, but it was in Russian; even after putting the info through a translator program, it’s still difficult to tell what exactly happened.

First Cherepanov, and now this — tough tournament for the Rangers’ prospects.

  267. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout & Prucha gets the Chances But Hollweg Does the Dances on

Artie is probably alright, it might not be to serious. But its good to know he’s willing to leave. He has been saying how much he wants to play in the NHL, and he said if he doesnt make it, then he’ll play with the pack until he can prove himself a solid center for them to play. I like the kid but i also like Dubi, this is sooooo tough to choose. I can see the both of them brawling over that spot in camp. It would be nice if Pyatt took over 4th line. To have Staal and his buddy Pyatt on our team sounds great.

  268. Salty today is the 31st , that news is from the 22nd. Are you are related to rip van winkle? The NYR signed Drury & Gomez.

    1. One game a week…What does the “N” stand for Nancy (Nancy Football League) LOL

That was claaaaaassic. Finally NHL takes advantage of the bad news from other sports.

  280. PLEASE NOTE: That post above about a Phoenix trade was not written by me, the real Chris F. Nor was the one about herpes. Some of our less classy blogmates are up to their old identity theft tricks again…

Sam, any word on our injured Russian prospects?

  281. Sorry Chris, couldn’t resist.

Here’s some info and a link.
What has this blog turned into?
    http://www.planned.org/site/PageServer?pagename=HS_herpes

The first sign of herpes usually appears within 2-21 days after contact with the virus. It is possible to have very mild symptoms with an outbreak. Common symptoms of herpes infection are:

A tingly sensation, itchiness, pain, swelling, and redness where the virus entered the body.
Painful swollen glands in the groin.
Vague pain or discomfort in the abdomen, lower back or upper thighs sometimes occurs just before blisters appear. During the first outbreak a mild fever and muscle aches are common.
Tiny bumps or blisters filled with clear liquid which break in 2-5 days and leave tender open sores. Several days later the sores begin to dry up and scab, and eventually heal.
Herpes blisters or sores can occur on the face, lips, vaginal area, rectal area, penis, scrotal area or thighs. In women, sores can occur deep in the vagina on the cervix. Outbreaks on the cervix are often accompanied by a heavy watery vaginal discharge.

    1) “Ultimate Fighting” What a friendly little sport

    2) The Ticket Covers the Hockey. The Boxing is the bonus.

    3) At 32 Degrees, Water freezes, and Blood boils.

    4) One Game a Week? What is the in NFL for, Nancy?

    5) Maybe Baseball should stop using the word Sacrifice.

    6) Watch People Fight at Work

    7) There whole Pay Check is Hazzard Pay

    8) Meet out Two Defenders: Assault and Battery

    9) The only thing our refs Shave, is the Ice

Thank you Dallas Stars, that was hilarious. But were still gonna beat you this season.

  283. “Centering Ovechkin, Nylander should score more than with Jagr…”

    HA…HAHAHAHA…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Dude, you put the oob in the term boob. Nylnader has NEVER scored more than Jagr at any point in his career. You should invest your time in following a new sport. You’re clearly not following this one too well.

But on a serious note, what is your deal with Gomez? I’ve never seen so much vitriol from someone toward a player. Do you know him from somewhere or something? Did he not give you an autograph?

  284. Blueclue & Orr:

As I said, I DIDN’T WRITE THE POST ABOUT HERPES (or phoenix), but it was very friendly of you to reply. Some of the people here may be classless, but it’s nice to see others are more thoughtful.

Thanks for that, i no longer have the appetite i had. What a waste of Jack in the Box.

  286. tdchi

He said “more than WITH Jagr”

Not that he’d score more than Jagr scores.
Either way, I don’t think Nylander puts up
    comparable numbers to that of last year;
    Although a line of Ovechkin-Nylander-Semin
should be a fun line to watch-

I was in Pennsylvania, and i bought a whole bunch. I had to stock up cause i dont know if theres any in NY. Its depressing, the place is phenominal.

NYR fans….Eat at Jack in the Box, you wont regret it. Of coarse if you can find one here.

  289. No Sonic around here either; it looks good. I can’t say I’ve seen an Arby’s near, in addition. I’ve been to one in waaay upstate New York.

  290. My misread…doesn’t matter. I’ll stand by the statement. Nylander is on the tail end. He’ll score no more with Ov that he did with Jagr.

Caps DO have a mean forward line brewing. Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin. That’s going to be dangerous in the not-to-distant future.

  291. ORR oh this is a NYR hockey blog. I thought it was a fast food review. Ring dings or hockey pucks? Do you want fries with that?

  292. Someone on a message board claims that he has it on good authority that the REAL Leetch retirement night is not on 1/24 as most brokers want people to believe.

    He claims it’s on 1/22.
Can we get any confirmation on this?

  293. Hos often did Ovechkin actually play with Semin last year? I know they tried it for awhile, or at least were thinking about it, but they are both left wings by trade. I think Chris Clark played most of the time with Ovechkin, hence Clark’s better than usual numbers.

  294. Spiderpig

    That’s true.
Ovechkin and Semin were together more I think on the power play; although I went to a few Caps games early on and clearly remember Semin playng with OV on the same line at ES-

  295. From BB today on Anisimov

    Blueshirt BulletinSeptember 01, 2007
    Rumors of Artem’s Demise Premature
Those watching today’s Super Series Game 4, including Steve Zipay at Blue Notes, have noted that Artem Anisimov was back in action today, rendering inaccurate a report from his teammate of a ligament tear. That’s great news for the Rangers, who expect Anisimov in camp next week. That’s one tough kid to go from reports of a major injury to playing, and by all accounts, playing well. See here, here, and here for reports on Canada’s 4-2 win this morning, giving them a 4-0 series lead back to Canada with them. For more reading today, NYR.com has a feature on Ranger prospect Ryan Hillier.

It will be this year. Im pretty damn sure. But i dont know when they officially announce it. Those tix will be tough to get though. I gotta get me some.

    BTW

Why the Fugg does Eklund have SJS on his top 5 winners of the offseason list. I can understand why he has NYR at 3rd or 4th, because he’s a flyers fan. But SJS didnt improve there team, all they did is re sign 3 guys. Thats not improving.

The isles improved there team more then the Sharks, just by losing Poti.

  299. Looking baclk at Eklund’s comments, since I haven’t read them in awhile, it’s funny how he said Columbus was fourth on the list for Peca possibilities, especially since it was just after a story came out about it being a possibility.

Its also funny how he bashed Gainey (GM of the Habs) for denying reports about how they wanted Marleau, saying they never thought about it. Lol ek says “Its funny how he does this right after the Sharks re signed him.

Lol isnt that what Eklunds whole site is about, waiting till TSN says something then bang, stealing it saying he got it from his “Sources:. I dont know this guy, but him being such a douche, plus a flyers fan, it kinda makes me wanna throw a Colton Orr “right hand of doom” punch at his noggin.

  301. Seamus O Riley on

Marc Savant can score 30 goals and then have 30 goals scored against his team while resting comfortably in the sin bin, after taking a lazy man’s penalty.
He can also have his team scored against or have his goalie work extra hard for his lack of extra defensive effort.

  302. Seamus O Riley on

I’m willing to go out on a limb that Michael Nylander embarasses his new team’s GM with a dismal season—-

no Jagr, no real production. He returns to pre-Jagr form, plus he is a lot older….

  303. ORR who died and left you boss of this blog? I glad you think fast food is more interesting than other hockey subjects that don’t include the NYR. Did you get a kids meal with a toy?

  304. one of the few somewhat true things ecklund has said…”Remember that rumours are often agenda driven. It is something that I have learned to be very aware of so that I don’t get caught in that web. It is impossible to completely avoid that web however.

In the NHL world information is currency. I know certain people you need to be aware of. There are only two agents in the whole biz that I trust completely. There are about 6 GMs. But let’s face it. Everyone is doing their jobs. The key to my thing is that I talk to so many people that people will give me information in hopes that I can find out information that they may want. Nothing is free in the hockey rumour matrix…:”

Above is much lame attempt to be as funny as me. Pathetic! Plus I was having my Ukranian Massage over in Brighton Beach at 3:23 and could not possibly have been blogging.

Doesn’t he know there is only one real-fake Kaspar?

Comrade Spiderpig; My compliments for digging up the old Sandis bit. You are a true fanatic! Please erase the URL from the above imposter from 8-29. Do not his copy-cat attempt to ride my coattails be added to my record.
