Slow going with Peca, but….

…the Rangers have hired Anders Hedberg as Head European scout!

Now if they can only get Jan Erixon back in the fold, the Cup would be a certainty.

My tenuous link to Anders Hedberg is that when I was in third grade or so, he lived in the house of a girl in my class. This makes us practically family.

I’ll update more when I have it…

  1. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

Ortmeyer signed my NYR jersey a week before he signed with Nashville….were practically family…

  2. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

Somewhere in the city…It was depressing…i told him he was my fav Ranger….then he signed with the Preds….was it something i said…..

  3. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

    SPIDERPIG

Lol i still have the jersey…i tried to sell it…but my hand started to shake uncontrollably..So i still have it…Lol my hand was frozen just like Fedoruks after Orr knocked him out.

  4. to summarize my thoughts:

    1. Gomez is overrated and overpriced and needs to be traded (Jovanovski makes the most sense)

    2. Dawes is too small and needs to be traded

    3. Betts needs to be traded because he sucks

    4. Hossa needs to be traded after 10-15 games, unless he plays great and produces

    5. Orr is useless as are all pure goons

    6. Jessiman needs to be traded to Ducks, because we will never play him and he just takes a spot away from someone.

    7. At least an attemp has to be made at acquiring Joel Lundqvist

    8. Pock, Mara and Malik should be traded

    9. Montoya needs to be the backup

    10. Dubinsky, Moore, Staal, Baranka and Liffiton need to make the team

    11. Mara, Betts, and Gomez for Jovanovski, Reinprecht and Lisin makes a lot of sense for both teams

    12. Renney is a horrible coach and needs to be replaced with someone who got a clue

    13. Kasparaitis should be on the team if he is in good shape and plays well in the camp

    14. Valiquette, Strudwick and Hutchinson need to be sent down to Hartford and forgotten there.

    15. Peca should be signed for 1 season.

    16. trade away all the un-needed prospects for 7th round picks (Immonen, Graham, etc.)

    17. sign Potter to NHL contract

    18. Shanahan should play LW, preferably with Jagr, he is not a RW and mostly scores from LW.

    19. acquire an extra 2nd or 1st round in this deep draft

    20. Try to trade up to get a top 3 pick to get Tavares or whoever, preferably center.

  5. Orr-

I’m so mad I didn’t ask him to sign my jersey when I met him at Meyers after the opening game… I just wanted a photo. He was my favorite player too. I’ll still be wearing his jersey to the Garden though.

  6. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

If we dont sign Pecahead….Is there any possibility that Pyatt can steal the spot??

  7. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

Yeah i will never recover….i dont care if he didnt score many goals….he was the friggin man…I expect Hollweg to have his most shitty season ever now that his buddy is gone….He might be like kaspar last season…Crying on the bench…Orr’s gonna have to knock some sense into him.

  8. Do opposing teams sign autographs when at away arenas? I’m thinking about waiting outside maybe after an Islanders vs. Nashville game to see if Ortie’s there. No way am I getting shot in Newark outside a NJ game so it has to be the Isles.

But seriously, a guy like him is truly irreplaceable.

  9. Closest Preds game to here is January 29 in Boston. And only one Preds game that we’ll actually see on TV – on Versus Feb. 5, unless you get the NHL package. Anyway, enough sentiment about Ortmeyer.

  10. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

    Good point Troll

    CML

Lol your right…its not worth the bullet to get an autograph…Unless you find near death experiences amusing.

I hope its a long time till we vs the preds…Im not prepared to see him against us.

Its nothing personall against Hollweg…even though im constantly saying i rather have Orr then Hollywood….But like i said so many times…its such BS that Hollywood took Orties spot…ill never get over it and never look at him the same…even though its not his fault…it sucks…

  11. “its such BS that Hollywood took Orties spot”

Hollweg has nothing to do with it. You might as well blame Hossa. Ortmeyer was not young, had no offensive potential, sued the Rangers, Greg Moore will be an upgrade over Ortmeyer you will see and is almost 6 years younger and has more offensive potential and size.

  12. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

Does anyone think Paul Martin and Marcel Hossa look a little like Beavis…You know…from Beavis and Butthead….

    Especially Martin…

Colby Armstrong looks a bit like Butthead…he has that witch nose that scares the life outta me

  13. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

But Moore wont be on the team any time soon…so theres no point in talking about him….I hate Nashville…but im rooting for them to win the cup..if NYR doesnt win it

If thet manage to make the playoffs that is…cause lets face it….they suck

  14. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

    TROLL

I guess Schoenfeld will also be an idiot when you dont see Moore this season..huh??

  15. 21. Guy who changes his name everyfifth minute buys a clue.

Whatever you’re calling yourself: You’ve never seen Dawes play but have ‘decided’ he’s too small…you want Jessiman traded to the Ducks(of all places) when not more than a month ago, you hadpenciled in the Ranger-lineup ON FIRST LINE WITH JAGR…you want a developing goaltender to be relegated to a 10-game season…you’re the only person whose ever advocated trading a free agent before he’s played agame(thereby ensuring the Rangers would NEVER sign another free agent again)…you believe this team can trade away garbage and players that failed to make the bigs for picks…you think the Ranger coach that has lead the team to two consecutive playoff seasons(and the only one to lead the blueshirts to the playoffs THIS CENTURY) should be fired…you want to trade away a solid QUARTER of this roster, including half the defensive corps, in favor of guys struggling to maintain themselves in Hartford…you want to put Shanahan on a line with Jagr (?!?!?)…

Dude…coffee’s on. Grab yourself a cup and WAKE UP.

The even funnier part is your sudden and short-lived love affair with Blair Betts: “Oh and how he handled the jersey # issue was REALLY “classyâ€?. Maybe you should have offered Betts 100,000 more to sleep with his woman…He didn’t even play a single preseason game as a Ranger and he already managed to flex his muscle and make Betts feel worthless.”

WTF do you care? You’re the one trying to run this guy out on a pike.

  16. ORR Does the Kicks and Kaspar Gets the Chicks and Joel Lundqvist isnt worth Two 3rd Round Picks on

I want Pyatt to make the team…Him and Staal are BFF’s…That can work in nYR’s favor…Them playing together and against eachother…they know each other well…

Err i love this….I dont know who id want as center…Dubi, Artie, or Pyatt….We should be happy that we have good options down the middle.

Who do you all think will be the Wing fowards this season….not counting Dawes….and no centers.

  17. “anybody know why Peca did not play in 00/01 season?”

Because he HELD OUT with the Sabres(hence why he’s not signing with them…)

  18. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha starts to Doubt....Dont know what that About on

TSN is saying Devils signed Peca to a 2 year deal

  19. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha starts to Doubt....Dont know what thats About on

    kidding…

Im bored and it sucks out so i have nothign better to do…

    BTW

i think Dawes should get traded…in a package deal with Montoya to somewhere..lets get Cliche back from the kings

  20. ORR Knocks em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha starts to Doubt....Dont know what thats About on

I actually hope Jessiman gets played this season…Im anxious to see what this kid can do…I can see him play with Prucha…or maybe its just my need to get someone semi tough to protect the kid….

  21. wow that must have been a big dispute to miss entire season.

“I guess Schoenfeld will also be an idiot when you dont see Moore this season..huh??”

he is not the one making decisions, so I don’t know whether he is or isn’t an idiot.

but I know for a fact that tdchi is an idiot.

  22. ORR's gonna kick fake Weinman and Shove Hollweg up Metrosexual Hyena's Yin Yang Yo on

  24. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

No one answered my question from the other day….So i must ask again..

Will we see Sanguinetti in pre season hockey or no…Im really anxious to see him play with a few of the rangers now.

  25. “Yenner, how would you like to own that bridge?”

I practically do already. But I can sell YOU a share, since we are such good friends.

“Hmmm, I didn’t know you could get internet connection under the Brooklyn Bridge! ha =P”

being only 17 there are many more things you do not know.

  26. Where you from, Orr?

Sanguinetti will most likely be on the team in training camp, which means he will probably get into a preseason game or two.

  27. Its ashame that the quality of the people posting on here is so low given that Sam is one of the best reporters covering this team and no other beat guy gives us as much day to day info during the course of the season. He really has developed one the best Ranger blogs out there. Unforunately this entire comments section has become useless because of the some the misguided people who sit on here all day and clearly do not have a clue of what they are talking about.

  28. Hey Level-25…
1 – gomez is not overrated. his numbers are low because he plays the boring trap system of the new jersey devils in which no players have good numbers…and Jovo is not worth the age, money or injuries

2- dawes is not too small – hence martin st. louie, prucha, RICHTER, and a bunch of other tiny guys who made it big in the league

3 – Betts is a checking line center who is not supposed to be here to score goals

4 – Hossa scored 8 goals during the couple of weeks he played on the top line. Unlike Adam Hall and Jason Ward and other garbage we’ve had on the 4th line…Hossa has lots of potential and will come in handy when Shanny and Straka retire next season and we need a left winger.

5 – Orr is not a goon, simon is a goon. – Orr, like hollweg and betts – isnt here to score goals he is here to play a defensive game and play hard, not like a goon. Are you also a Jeff Beukeboom hater???

6 – Jessiman is not on the Rangers Roster and is wasting nobody’s spot. If you have that attitude you will never discover the abilities of Callahan and Girardi like we did last season.

8 – Yes, Malik should be traded but nobody is going to accept a mid-30s defensemen who gets paid 3 million per season to NOT hit and put the puck in his own net. Pock is one of our hardest working defenseman and is no worse than any of our other D-men, and Mara has the 2nd best slap shot from the blue line behind sheldon souray. How do you expect the Rangers Powerplay to get better if Mara doesnt sit at the point and shoot?? Roszival sure as hell isnt going to do it.

9 – Montoya will be worth nothing unless he has a solid year in hartford. He started like crap last season but picked it up. He needs to have a solid year and make his value go up…and nothing is written in stone until Lundqvist signs a long-term deal in January.

    11 – You’re trading away a good shooter, a hard-working penalty-killer, and a 1st line center for garbage

12 – You have no idea what you’re talking about. renny is the only reason this team did what it did in 2006 and 2007.

13 – Kasper is in great shape but you saw the few games he played this season – the league hates him and he gets called for every penalty he takes. He is a valuable player in the NHL 5 years ago…not in the new NHL.

14 – Valiquette is a good solution for now until we have more cap room and can get a better backup. He was 5th overall in the AHL last season with a 2.567 GAA – he is older and has experience.

15 – Peca never said he’s looking for more than 1 year…why are you bringing that up?

16 – Immonen can’t be traded because right now hes a UFA and is looking to go back to Europe

18 – Shanny and Jagr never played well together, even on the PP.

    THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK please

  29. Whatever His Name Is said:
“wow that must have been a big dispute to miss entire season.”

Well, ding, ding, ding. You just had your first accurate statement post on this site. The dispute was enough that the Sabres eventually traded him for Connolly and Pyatt, the Islander’s 5th and 8th picks of 1999. Hence Peca’s tenure as the Isles’ captain. The Sabres were so imbittered by the dispute and his departure(even though they obviously made out better than the Isles), that they refused to entertain the posibility of signing him, even though he wanted to play in Buffalo badly and they could definitely could use his services.

As for your wanton use of the term “idiot” I’d advise you not sling boulders whilest living in a glass house. If you’d pay attention sometime instead of simply calling names when people disagree, you might learn a thing or two about hockey.

    SPIDERPIG

    Im from Queens….

    Thanks for the Bobby info

  31. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    YEAH!!!

I just got my Jaromir Jagr Fat Head in the mail…Pretty cool looking…Now they gotta make a Hank fat head…

Would NYR be interested in signing Marc Andre Bergeron…I know he misses the net alot but he has a hard shot and is a decent PP quarter back who helped the Fish PP at the deadline…He’s pretty fast and is good on D…

His only flaw is that he was a fish…but i wont hold that against him…

    Gimme some opinions..

  32. I was all excited when i got through about 25 or so posts and no one had responded to you know who…Can’t we all just make a pact to ignore every single one of his posts, no matter how insulting they are, be it personally or about the team? Its like an 8 year old crying for attention because both of his parents work and he is being raised by the Jamaican housekeeper….God, C’mon people lets make it work!!

  33. Betts is a 4th line center. You should expect him to be a good player. He is a checking line center, therefore you dont expect him to score goal nor do you really need him to score goals. He is not gonna rack up 40 assists on the 4th line. Joe Thornton would have trouble racking up helpers with Ryan Hollweg and Colton Orr. They have extremely small amounts of anything that is seen in goal scorers. Orr cant skate, neither of them has hands, a shot or finishing ability. I could score as many goals as Ryan Hollweg, and maybe more. The only time Hollweg scored last year was when Jagr and him were on a 2 on 0 and Jags gave Hollweg one of his many goals. Betts is a very good checking line/4th line center

  34. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    GO NYR

Orr has hands…and he always kicks Yin Yang…But Hollweg doesnt have any hands at all…

Im happy with Orr…defensively he’s gotten better…and he had a career high in goals and points and tied his career high in assists (2 – 1 – 3)

Obviously id love to have a line of

    Hossa – Dubinsky / Ansimov – Dawes / Orrweg / Korpikoski / Bourett / Jessiman??

    I like Betts…hes a good D foward…but lets sign Peca…trade Betts and have a offensive 4th line like that…

Lol…no one will notice he’s gone..cause from what every Ranger said…Betts barely talks in the room…he’s the complete opposite of Aaron Ward…I think its the right move to trade him…

  35. Colorado Mark on

Level 25- (I got a kick out of your Age/location, btw) So here is your Stanley Cup Winning lineup:

    Shanahan-Drury-Jagr
    Straka-Reinprecht-Moore
    Prucha-Peca-Callahan
    Hollweg-Dubinsky-Lundqvuist

    Staal-Jovanovski
    Girardi-Tyutin
    Rozsival-Kasparitis
    Liffiton

    Lundqvuist
    Montoya

No subs. And Hartford is devastated!

I like the youth, but talk about a makeover for a team that was pretty good last year. Not to mention that I think Reinprecht over Gomez is insane. Interesting conversation, though!

  36. Colorado Mark on

Derf- Good points. As for Immonen, I think that he is still Rangers property because he was tendered a qualifying offer. He didn’t sign it but I’m not sure that makes him a free agent. I think he can’t be signed by another NHL team. Taylor was not signed by the Rangers but he was signed by the Pack (along with Owens, Lessard, and a few others.

  37. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

I was reading BB.com….It says that Jagr still thinks we should get a D man….

Does that mean he wouldnt mind if his buddy Harry gets traded???

  38. czechthemout!!!!! on

another day with out peca.just wonderfull news.hopefully,we
don’t sign him and he has to go and sign with tor or buf.

    NO PECA,NO PECA

  39. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    Is Peca a Ranger Yet??

  40. I’m 35, I live in Virginia about 45 minutes west of DC.

On Dawes: I think he has talent, but I would not be comparing him to Marty St. Louis. St. Louis has much better speed than Dawes, although Dawes is still young and his speed could get better, lets hope so.

As far as room on the Rangers roster for all these players, I don’t see where there is much room.

Anisemov, our firsr rounder this year, Jessiman, Dawes, Callahan, Byers, Pyatt, etc… don’t know where all these guys will fit, we only lose Shanny, Avery and Straka after this season.

  41. Orr, what college are you at or going to? If you’re 17, you must have just graduated from high school, right?

  42. The times I’ve seen Dawes in Hartford, he’s always stood out. Good speed, good control of the puck and knows where he needs to be on the ice. And from what I’ve read, he has a very good work ethic and attitude; these reports date back to when he was in juniors.

I’ve always assumed the one stopping block for him has been Prucha, who defintily has the edge skill-wise, not that Dawes is anything to scoff at. I don’t doubt that he’ll be an NHLer. Just when and with what team. And I wouldn’t call him small by any means, at 5’8 and 190 pounds; he must be built like a tank.

As the saying goes, size isn’t everything. True, it helps being over 6′ and 200 pounds in the NHL. But the shorter a guy is, the more difficult it can be to hammer him. I remember skating against on kid in college who couldn’t have been more than 5’3. The guy was positively magical with the puck and was like a rocket on his skates. The only thing you could do was nail him to the boards, and nine out of ten times you tried, he’d duck the check. Not saying that’s the case in the NHL, but size ain’t always a detriment. Just as Theo Fleury.

  43. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    CML

I dont know…I gotta think about which colleges to go to…tough choice…its like choosing between the Sedin twins…

  44. Orr

So you’re a senior in high school also? Cool. What schools in the area are you looking at? NYU, Manhattenville, St. Johns, SUNY… are there any other New York based that you or anyone else have looked at that seems really good? I’ve also checked out Syracuse, BC, BU, Fairfield U and UCONN but thats obviously not in NY.

I like Henrik Sedin better, =D he’s an inch taller!
I think searching for colleges is like deciding if Gomez or Drury should play with Jagr. Such indecision.

  45. “Not to mention that I think Reinprecht over Gomez is insane.”

which part is insane? Perhaps the part where you don’t think Jovanovski is a legitimate #1 defenseman.

“No subs. And Hartford is devastated!”

subs would be from Hartford and it wouldn’t be devestated at all.

“So here is your Stanley Cup Winning lineup”

they aren’t guaranteed to win it, but they sure would have a better chance than what we have now or had the last 2 seasons.

  46. What I don’t like about Dawes is he is too one dimentional–not physical, not good defensively, doesn’t kill penalties. And on top of that we already got too many undersized forwards. And even if he does play on the top line, I don’t see him being very successful in NHL.

  47. “1 – gomez is not overrated. his numbers are low because he plays the boring trap system of the new jersey devils in which no players have good numbers…and Jovo is not worth the age, money or injuries”

Jovo is also a bit overpaid and a risk, but I take him over Gomez puke any time.

“2- dawes is not too small – hence martin st. louie, prucha, RICHTER, and a bunch of other tiny guys who made it big in the league”

Richter and Prucha are nowhere near as tiny as Dawes. And Dawes is nowhere near as fast and skilled as St. Louis

“3 – Betts is a checking line center who is not supposed to be here to score goals”

at least 10 assists would be nice. Throwing big hits would be nice. So far in 2 seasons Betts managed to cough up 6 assists.

  48. John Dellapina’s Page…
    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/rangers/2007/08/agent_sather_undecided_on_peca.html#comments

    Agent: Sather Undecided on Peca
Time for your nightly Michael Peca update:

In short, the puck remains on Glen Sather’s stick and the Rangers’ GM has yet to decide whether to shoot or pass.

“He is thinking about it,” was agent Don Meehan’s response tonight when I asked him if any progress had been made in his discussions with Sather.

Meehan insisted that, though he anticipates no problem working out a contract, no conditional agreement has been reached that would be consummated if and when Sather decides he wants Peca to join the Rangers.

Asked if he would continue to talk just with the Rangers or resume discussions with other teams, Meehan replied: “We will give this a bit more time.”

  49. “4 – Hossa scored 8 goals during the couple of weeks he played on the top line. Unlike Adam Hall and Jason Ward and other garbage we’ve had on the 4th line…Hossa has lots of potential and will come in handy when Shanny and Straka retire next season and we need a left winger.”

could have been a fluke it often happens with players like Hossa, Lundmark, etc. Remember Pock in his first 6 games?

“8 – Yes, Malik should be traded but nobody is going to accept a mid-30s defensemen who gets paid 3 million per season to NOT hit and put the puck in his own net. Pock is one of our hardest working defenseman and is no worse than any of our other D-men, and Mara has the 2nd best slap shot from the blue line behind sheldon souray. How do you expect the Rangers Powerplay to get better if Mara doesnt sit at the point and shoot?? Roszival sure as hell isnt going to do it.”

get your facts straight. Malik in his early 30’s is making only 2.5 mil and was among the leaders in +/-. Mara’s slapshot isn’t any better than Tyutin’s or Girardi’s. Our PP will not change whether Mara is here or not. Pock is useless no matter how hard he plays, he is insignificant, slow, small and soft and overrated offensively.

“9 – Montoya will be worth nothing unless he has a solid year in hartford. He started like crap last season but picked it up. He needs to have a solid year and make his value go up…and nothing is written in stone until Lundqvist signs a long-term deal in January.”

His value will diminish the longer he doesn’t make NHL.

“5 – Orr is not a goon, simon is a goon. – Orr, like hollweg and betts – isnt here to score goals he is here to play a defensive game and play hard, not like a goon. Are you also a Jeff Beukeboom hater???”

Simon is a player that can fight, score and hit. Orr is a useless goon.

“6 – Jessiman is not on the Rangers Roster and is wasting nobody’s spot. If you have that attitude you will never discover the abilities of Callahan and Girardi like we did last season.”

he is taking up SOMEONE’s icetime in Hartford maybe Korpikoski or Barnes.

    “11 – You’re trading away a good shooter, a hard-working penalty-killer, and a 1st line center for garbage”

no, I am trading away 3 garbages for a #1 Defenseman, a versatile 2nd line center and a talented prospect.

“12 – You have no idea what you’re talking about. renny is the only reason this team did what it did in 2006 and 2007.”

LMAO, what a bunch of horseshit, unless you mean early exits in the playoffs, then I totally agree.

“13 – Kasper is in great shape but you saw the few games he played this season – the league hates him and he gets called for every penalty he takes. He is a valuable player in the NHL 5 years ago…not in the new NHL.”

who cares if the league hates him, could have just been bad luck, but I think many of those penalties were deserved.

“14 – Valiquette is a good solution for now until we have more cap room and can get a better backup. He was 5th overall in the AHL last season with a 2.567 GAA – he is older and has experience.”

Valiquette is a career AHLer, he is much worse than Labarbera. For him to be the backup would be an absolute ridiculous joke.

“15 – Peca never said he’s looking for more than 1 year…why are you bringing that up?”

I have no idea what Peca wants, I just state what I want.

“16 – Immonen can’t be traded because right now hes a UFA and is looking to go back to Europe”

I believe we have his rights, he is an RFA

“18 – Shanny and Jagr never played well together, even on the PP.”

Maybe they should try again, especially since the centerman is now different, maybe it works. In any case Shanahan should just play LW.

    “THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK please”

    you too

  50. Level 25…. Derf corrected every stupid point u made before and ur responses to them make no sense..but whatever its ur opinion. What makes me laugh is how u credit malik by leading in plus minus. WOW. If kyle farnsworth on the yankees learned how to skate and played on the jagr line im sure he wud be a plus minus leader too. Marc savard on boston and has had two back to back 90 plus point seasons and finished in the minus both years..does that make him bad? Malik scored more goals against the rangers than he did against our opponents. Malik is a waste of size and money.

  51. “What makes me laugh is how u credit malik by leading in plus minus.”

Der…eh I mean Bobby, I don’t, but other GMs will look there before they go read comments of fans online. Yes Malik sucks, but there will be GMs interested in him.

“Derf corrected every stupid point u made before and ur ”

First of all learn to spell. And somebody who doesn’t know how much Malik is making cannot possibly correct any of my intelligent and educated and knowledgeable points.

WTF are you basing this on? The same bogus reasoning you base trading Gomez et all for Jovo and Reinprecht? Have you SEEN Dawes skate a FULL game, not just five minutes on fourth line? My guess would be No.

Now onto your latest lines of BS: “it often happens with players like Hossa, Lundmark, etc. Remember Pock in his first 6 games?” Hmm…Lundmark isn’t playing in the NHL anymore and Hossa and Pock are STILL WITH THE RANGERS. Don’t see your comparisson. And anyone who goes on a scoring spate like Hoss did deserves a shot to show he can do it again(which he can)…Pock, might I remind you, has been on this team since before the lockout. In both cases, the Ranger brass sees something they like in these guys, which is very understandable. Pock is not a defensive liablity, as you put it, and has a very good offensive upside. No, he won’t be winning the Noris Trophy anytime soon, but he’s a more than adequate third-line pairing and powerplay specialist. In the case of Hossa, he has much of the talent his brother has, just no coach has tapped into it; Renney did for a spell last season.

And you in your infinite wisdom, would like to trade these guys to give AHLers a chance? Sorry, don’t see your logic.

…Montoya…I’ll ask you this ONE MORE TIME, seeing as though you conveniently evade the question every time: HOW IS 10 GAMES IN THE NHL NEXT SEASON GOING TO BOOST MONTOYA’S REPUTTION(or confidence for that matter)? Do tell. I can’t wait to hear this. And have you ever heard of a goalie named HASEK? Probably not, but look him up. And then tell me how old he was when he skated his first 20 games with the Blackhawks. Or maybe how old Ryan Miller was when became the Sabres starting goalie…Yeah, every year Monty sits down there, he devalues…NOT.

…again, it’s funny to hear you of all people bad mouth Jessiman now. Let me guess, you played open hockey with him over the last couple of months…

…Mark my words: Barring injury or suspension, the Rangers’ backup goalie will skate no more than 15 games next season, MAX. Lundqvist was sharper at game 82 than he was midway through the season. The Rangers’ backup will be akin to the Devils’ backup. So you could put a pilon in the backup position. Valliquette or anything short of a pilon will do just fine.

This is getting annoying…we were supposed to sign Pecahead 3 days ago..Im sick of waking up thinking he’s signed…Sign him or not damnit.

  55. Half-Troll,

I’m an intelligent hockey fan! So perhaps you can explain to me why we should give up Gomez for a center in Reinprecht who hasn’t posted 30 points in a season since 2003.

  56. “Looks like I am stuck here with the lowest common denominator hockey fans. Where did all the intelligent people go? Please come back”

Looks like you ARE the lowest common denominator. Please go back into hibernation or to the Joel Lundqvist fan page.

  57. ORR – I’m definitely a guilty one here. I just can’t let some of these moronic comments slide, especially when he goes on his “let’s trade this team ’cause it sucks and Jovanoski rules” tirades…

Joe – no decision until next week, according to the NY Post. Apparently, Sather still hasn’t given the go-ahead. Given how much smoke there is around the Peca signing, it’s probably just because he’s on vacation or something. I’m still holding out hope Peca pulls a fast one and signs with the Isles.

    NO TO PECA!!!

  58. Actually tdchi, I just heard from a friend that Slats is in Ontario on a fishing trip, hence why the deal has not been made official. I guess Sather can’t look too stressed out so he can look good in one of those flambouyant pimp suits.

For more info on both go to BB and Hockey Rodent’s sites.

  74. ALSO…

At the Golden Stick Awards, obviously Jags won, but Hasek was runner-up, and Straks (who actually showed even though he had surgery) came in 3rd.

Felt like sharing. Now time to sleep.

    Got new info on http://www.kuklaskorner.com/

C’mon shlubby I know it’s you.

  76. Rangers signed former Colorado College goalie Matt Zaba. Makes me wonder if Slats is serious about moving Montoya.

  77. I do not think this signing of a goalie reflects anything immediate concerning Montoya. Last season the Rangers and Pack had a total of 6 netminders throughout the system.

    Lundqvist
    Weekes
    Montoya
    Valiquette
    Holt
    Westlund

With this signing, they again have 6

    Lundqvist
    Montoya
    Valiquette
    Holt
    Wiikman
    Zaba

Standard move to flesh out the goalie-corps in my opinion

  78. “Now I know why I stopped coming to this site. There are seriously like 3 poster here who have any clue at all. Simply stunning. wow, wow, you got to be a complete idiot to single out the most intelligent poster here hands down as the dumbest.

  79. Meanwhile, while this Peca thing is keeping us up at night (not really) – Would people here be interested in doing a fantasy hockey league on Yahoo for people from this blog? Sam included. Can’t set up the league yet, so just let me know. Probably will do the standard Yahoo head-to-head settings, but maybe with 14 teams instead of 12. I think it would be fun and hope others are interested.

  80. New to the blog boys but I have been reading since the peca rumors began. This Reinprecht talk is ludicrous and although I do think Jovanovski would upgrade our defense, it is not worth losing gomez. Here are the lines I would like to see:

    Shanahan-Gomez-Jagr
    Prucha-Drury-Hossa
    Avery-Peca-Straka
    Callahan-Betts-Orr/Hollweg

If Gomez can gel with Jagr and Shanahan, that line will score 150 goals. Shanny is a rightie and Jagr a lefty. Think Gomez constantly setting the 2 of them up with one timers in the slot. The power play possibilities are making me salivate. Plus, Shanny protects Jagr. We also have a lot of depth with these lines. Prucha, Drury, and Hossa gelling is questionable but you have a nice combo of speed, grit, finesse and power on that second line. Just a little worried about protecting prucha but if Hossa can grab his nutsack a little more often and dish a little pain out of his big frame then that too can be remedied and although small, Drury will get in your face if need be. The third line could be the most agitating line ever assembled. Please bear in mind that I don’t think Peca should be signed for longer than a year and definately to an incentive laden cheap contract but if we can do that he def fills a huge void because Betts should play limited minutes and be relegated to important defensive draw duty. He’s just not that talented. But just think of the forechecking nightmare that a line of Avery, Peca. Straka poses to the opposition. They will force turnovers and draw penalties aplenty not to mention they have the speed and talent to capitalize and score on those turnovers. I really like Callahan and it hurts to have him on the fourth line but he is the first guy to move up if something doesnt work or an injury occurs.

Just as a little background, I played as an enforcing hard-hitting defenseman almost my entire hockey career and I will be the first to tell you that Malik plays like a wuss. That being said, you cannot underestimate how important the +/- stat is. Yes he led the Rangers and playing with the Jagr line obviously helps but give the guy some credit. Remember, it is only calculated at even strength and you have to admit that Malik(for the most part) makes a great first pass and that is a key cog in the Rangers offense when he is on the ice. Would Jovanovski be an upgrade? Absolutely, but Malik still has value in this league as 6’6″ defenseman who can handle the puck always will and should not just be traded for nothing.

I’m in for the fantasy league as well.

This has been an exciting offseason and I can’t wait for the season to start. Really excited about getting Cherepanov cause boys this kid is going to be a superstar. Give him a year or 2 to mature and gain 15-20 pounds and he will dominate. Would love to get a chance to see Anisimov get some time this year but we literaly have so many young guys I want to see come up that there is just not enough room for them all. Sadly, it will probably only make sense to move guys like Montoya, Jessiman, Liffiton, Dubinsky, Pock, maybe even Girardi while he has value. Most of these guys are blocked by superior talent anyway.

  81. Westlund has gone back to Russia to play this season, and Wiikman is signed to an AHL contract

  82. hockeymanrangers on

HEY! Russian MOBB, I like your lines and reasonings for them it sounds good. But please don’t talk about trading our young players away. I think this has been our problem for years we trade good young players away. The rangers camp say they are a rebuilding the team, year after year after year. And look here we are again trying to buy a cup again. However I am not saying that I am not excited about the coming season. And if things don’t work out we still have our young ones to continue with. Which I guess is what I like to watch and that is a young player move up and watch how he progresses. I can’t watch them in the NHL but I keep tabs on who doing what. Any way Russain MOBB welcome aboard I think this is one of the best NYR bloggs out there. Sam does a great job.

  83. Thanks for the welcome hockeyman. My statements may have been misinterpreted. I was certainly not trying to say that we should trade ALL of those guys away. I think our system is as deep right now as I have ever seen it and I love it. I just think we have tier A guys like Staal, Montoya, Anisimov, Sanguinetti, Pyatt, Cherepanov and then theres Tier B guys like Duby, Jessiman, Dawes, Liffiton who have great potential but still a lot of question marks surrounding their game. Even though I consider Montoya Tier A, he is obviously blocked by Henrik for many years to come and it makes no sense to waste him on the bench and have him start 10 games this year. That is why I feel that packaging him and a Tier B guy might be in our best interest to add depth, experience, and some toughness(which it is sorely lacking) to our defense.

Just a thought and I know it will never happen but how sick would it be if instead of getting Peca we got Forsberg?

    Shanny-Forsberg-Jagr
    Prucha-Gomez-Hossa
    Avery-Drury-Straka

  84. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    RUSSIAN MOBB

    Yuck…No way…Forsberg mine as well retire…And he’s to expensive..

I dont like Shanny and Jagr on the same line…There both 40 + goal scorers and you have to seperate them…Unless they have amazing chem which they dont…Not every team can have a Heatley – Spezza – Alfreddson line.

And Cally on the 4th line isnt worth it unless we dump Betts and bring up Dubi or Artie and have Dawes on the wing…In my opinion..

  85. hockeymanrangers on

    Russian MOBB

My thoughts are we don’t need Forsberg and we don’t need Peca either. We have enough young talent that can do the job just fine for us. Again give these young guys a shot. And I get your point with trading SOME of the young guys but let them play and gain more experiance, you just never know when one will take off. I am looking forward to camp and obviously the season to start.

  86. ORR

Obviously, Forsberg is way too expensive and we don’t NEED him per se but I’m just daydreaming. I mean come on, this guy should not retire. His body is def breaking down but he is too talented to not give it another go with somebody. How do you know what kind of chemistry Jagr and Shanny will have once you put Gomez between them? Its going to be a lot of trial and error in camp and preseason to see what works and all I’m saying is they should give it a shot.

    Hockeyman

Agreed, we don’t NEED either of them. Forsberg will never happen but it looks like Peca is going to so even though he is probably taking a spot from guy like Anisimov who I really want to see make the team, a guy with Peca’s experience and skill set, if healthy, can really help us.

  87. hockeymanrangers on

As far as Peca goes, I guess I’m at the point where I take him or leave him. And looks pretty good that he will be a NY Ranger soon no matter what we want any way.

  93. Just a few notes…Banff is in Ontario. If that was an attempt at sarcasm, it was a weak one.

Shanahan and Jagr on the same line don’t mix. They didn’t on the PP last year, why would they at ES this year?

Hossa on the 2nd line is a joke, he’s a 4th liner at best. He benefited from playing with Jagr and Nylander.

    Say no to Peca.

    Straka – Gomez – Jagr
    Prucha – Drury- Shanahan

  96. I don’t think Mara is better. Pock has a hard, accurate shot, is faster and takes less penalties. Mara is awful defensively, and with he may have a harder shot than Pock, he takes mostly dumb, pointless penalties.

  97. Russian MOBB: good to have another player aboard. Personally started out as a shifty smallish forward, gained 40 pounds in my 20s and now reign as a banging forward. Kinda weird seeing both sides…

Lines look good, just two issues I’d bring…Shanny and Jags never seemed to mesh well last season, I think partially because they both like shooting the puck from the top of the circle. I loved Hossa on his line because the one area he’s always shined brightest is digging the puck out of the corners and maintaining control of it. I think he and Jagr would mesh well with Gomer, whose king of the pass. Set Jags floating between the circles, Hoss in the corners and playing the post and have Gomer set up the goals. That also puts close to 500 pounds on the wings. Hoss is 220 and Jags is 240. That’s an intimidating presence…

Second thing, which I don’t have an issue with per se, is Straka on third. He’s making far too much cash for third line detail on one of Renney’s teams. Unfortunatly, Renny has never seemed interested in rolling four lines, or even three for that matter. I think its safe to say the top two lines will continue to skate 20-somthing minutes per player, while third will net about 14 and fourth 6. I think Avery, Prucha,Callahan and Hoss are more likely to get the call for third line.

ORR – Re: Peca; I agree, for the most part. I don’t think he’s in a situation where he’d hurt the Rangers and for $1.2 5 million, he could easily be waived if he stunk up the ice. Just I’d rather see at least one young guy recieving prominant ice on third, with another getting his feet wet on second. Hence, I’m calling on the BJs to sign him…

But i’d rather have Kaspar then Pock for now…If Kas is in the right state of mind for the season…

    Rozsival – Staal
    Kasparitus – Tyutin
    Mara – Girardi

  102. I never liked Pock he was sort of blah and never stood out or did anything good. We need one or two new defenseman on the team that are consistently solid.

  103. “Hossa on the 2nd line is a joke, he’s a 4th liner at best. He benefited from playing with Jagr and Nylander.”

Couldn’t disagree more. Isbister skated just as many games on first line and did NOTHING. True, Hoss benefited from being on a line with an all-star and superstar, but he did what Isbister didn’t, which was use his size to open up space. With Gomer, one of the league’s best passers, he’ll be even better. IMO.

Also, I got to disagree with Monty as a backup. It would be a waste of a year he needs to develop. Henrik will skate at least 65 games next season, probably more. Montoya needs at least 40 games between the pipes. Not to mention, Monty is about as streaky of a player as they come. The kid needs to get into his groove and lead Hartford to a championship before he’ll be worth anything in NY.

Mara – Were it a choice between who stays and who goes, I’d certainly rather see Pock than Mara, if for no other reason than Pock is cheap and has a large offensive upside. But I think you’re discounting Mara’s ability. He had a bad season all around last year. Prior to his time with Boston, he was considered a first pairing blueliner.

  104. Baron is right. Everson corrected himself in his blog on the Post’s website and said Banff is in Alberta and they got it wrong in the article.

    This was a dumb argument.

  105. CML – just a draft of all players in the league; take the ones you think will make the best team. You have certain positions you need to fill, a roster limit.

  109. tdchi – I would not be too upset to see a guy making Straka’s money getting 3rd line duty. With pp time and pk time plus him getting surgery just this past week, he does not need to overextend. It’s a long season and between injuries and what not players roles will change as the season goes along. Plus the idea is not to have the best possible 1st line but the best team and balance among all the lines.

  111. “I rather have Mara then Pock….And rather have Pock then Malik

But i’d rather have Kaspar then Pock for now…If Kas is in the right state of mind for the season…”

I agree, and I rather have Baranka over any of them.

  112. Anisimov is very intriguing and if he has a great camp it is a tough decision. Do you play him in AHL and let him find more offense, but risk making him want to go back to Russia? Or do you play him in NHL as a defensive/2way center and risk stunting his scoring potential?

  113. I said this before about Hossa, if you look at all his points only very small % was scored while playing with Jagr, the rest were scored when he was playing on various lines. Basically he should be a decent 4th liner if the 4th line center is not Blair “2.5 assists” Betts. So if the 4th line center is Dubinsky or Peca or Anisimov or Marchant, etc. Hossa would get around 25 points. That is of course if the other winger is not Hollweg or Orr or Isbister.

Did anyone else read this on Eklund’s site today: Today will be Peca day I am told, “You may not know where Peca is going today, but I hear you will know where he is not going.”

I guess that was an e1 because I haven’t read anything happening with Peca today.

  120. Salty – because there’s not much better to do on the hockey front, and it provides entertainment. I would have to say most other things on that site are pretty good, though, like the team-specific bloggers and fantasy games, but you have to sign up for those and pay, which I wouldn’t.

  121. PECA’S AGENT TO RANGERS: DECIDE TODAY!

NEW YORK POST/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS/COLUMBUS DISPATCH: all report agent Don Meehan, who represents UFA centre Mike Peca, has given the New York Rangers a deadline of Tuesday (today) to decide on signing Peca otherwise his client will consider other options. The Post and the Daily News report Meehan claims several teams, including the Columbus Blue Jackets, have expressed interest in Peca, whom the Rangers had in for medicals and interviews and appeared on the verge of signing him to a contract. Apparently the Peca camp is having trouble reaching Rangers GM Glen Sather. Michael Arace of the Dispatch suggests Sather might be cooling on Peca given the Rangers lack of depth on the blueline compared to their forward depth. Arace also suggests Meehan might be using the Blue Jackets to pressure the Rangers into closing the deal if not to drive up the price.

Spector’s Note: Sather’s actions certainly suggest he might be having second thoughts, and Arace makes a good point that Meehan might be using the Jackets to drive up Peca’s price. Either way, what seemed a certainty at the end of last week may no longer be, and the possibility of Peca as a Blueshirt appears on thin ice today.

  122. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

What ever…as long as the decision is today…Im sick of thinking about it…Its time to sign or not…

I really dont think NYR is done though…I think there still trying to trade for a D man.

And if anyone is interested..Blueshirtbulletin.com has a post with Jagr and Straka talking about the upcoming season.

BB says Straka’s surgery is similar to Rozsi’s from last summer…and he will definently be able to start for camp and pre season…

  123. Huh, so I guess the esteemed Eklund picked up a copy of today’s NY Post. Thanks for nothing, moron.

As for Peca-gate, I’ll say this: if Peca REALLY wants to be on the Rangers, tryouts are less than a month away. Come with your legs and your goal-scoring touch; otherwise don’t come at all. If his agent is “trying to drive up the price” as has been mentioned, then he deserves a club like Columbus. The Rangers don’t need this guy, even if there IS an injury that prevents Avery or Straka from being the third-line center. No Peca also means Callahan gets a spot in the top three lines and Dawes has a shot(with an honorable mention to Bourret, because Clark thinks high of him).

Bottom line is this: who would you rather see in the lineup, Peca or the kids. Given the roles available are either third line center, third line wing or fourth line wing, I’ll take the kids, thank you.

  124. Doodie Machetto on

Forget driving up the price, he’s tryin to drive up the pressure. He’s saying to Sather, look: sign Peca today or we’re going to Columbus. Given sather’s ego, I have a good feeling that Peca won’t be signed today. And if he ever is signed by the Rangers, it’ll be because he begs Glen to take him, and it’ll be for less than what he would’ve gotten last week. Nice job Meehan; you just screwed your client.

PS, I was in Montreal last week, and you would not believe how big the hockey coverage is there. Case in point: I knew about Anders Hedberg because it was on sportscentre(er)! Crazy.

Personally, depending on whatever contract Peca would sign, I could be happy either way. A one year contract at a low number (800k-1m) would make me happy, as would no contract at all.

Of course, I know Kaspar is hoping that the Rangers Politburo won’t sign him to keep the cap space open.

  125. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

    TDCHI

Either way…If we sign Peca…Hoss, Cally, Pru, or Avery is playing on the 4th line…If we dont sign Peca then Dubi or Artie get 3rd line center, and boom…Those 4 guys are fighting to stay off the 4th line…

Knowing Renney and the staff…That guy will be Callahan or Prucha…I think this is how Tom and the staff will open up with…

    Hossa – Gomez – Jagr
    Avery – Drury – Shanahan
    Prucha – Dubinsky / Ansimov / Peca – Avery
    Callahan – Betts – Orrweg / Dawes

    And that would suck….

I like Betts but if we sign Peca we have to trade Betts…And i doubt Hollweg will be gone because of his “well diserved” 2 year deal…

I understand that it helps to have a defensive 4th line, or energy line…

But if we had a 4th line of…

Callahan – Dubinsky / Ansimov – Dawes / Moore / Bourett / Korpikoski / Jessiman…and then play Orr in the games we need him…Then that would be perfect

I have nothing against Betts but we have no use for him if we sign Peca…If we dont sign him…then keep him around until his contract is up then dump him…

It will be a long time until we see Ansimov..Dubinsky..Pyatt and wingers Jessiman..Bourett..Korp..Moore..Dawes etc. with guys like Hollweg..Orr..and Betts under contract…At the very least we HAVE to dump Hollweg or Orr…Why have the two of them…Hartford doesnt need a hitter…they have bangers..and they have Mitch Fritz to protect the farm boys…so what will we do…keep switching Orr and Hollweg back and forth all season…I dont want to wait another 2 seasons to see some youth that might be ready…

  127. Doodie Machetto on

Greyhound out of Newark, 80 bucks round trip. i just wish i knew that i didnt actualy have to go to newark, since the bus went to the port authority and i couldve just got on from there. oh well.

  128. We will see Dubinsky, Dawes, Bourett, Moore, Pyatt, Ansismov ect. a lot faster than everyone thinks. Considering Shanny is only around for 1 more year, Avery has a year left on his deal, Straka and Jagr each have 2 years left.

Read the quotes from Clark in the NHL.com article about the Rangers prospects. They want to see them dominate for a year in the AHL before promoting them. Only Dawes has done that so far which is why Clark things he has a good shot of sticking around for good this year.

  129. “I have nothing against Betts but we have no use for him if we sign Peca…If we dont sign him…then keep him around until his contract is up then dump him…”

he needs to be dumped immediately, he is horrible.

“It will be a long time until we see Ansimov..Dubinsky..Pyatt and wingers Jessiman..Bourett..Korp..Moore..Dawes etc. with guys like Hollweg..Orr..and Betts under contract…”

I agree, likely all 3 need to be moved. Hollweg can stay though because he is an excellent hitter, but if Byers or Jessiman can hit like Hollweg then by all means make the substitution.

Peca’s agent is probably under pressure from other teams that are interested, it is not about driving up the price or the pressure, they are getting desperate.

  130. Doodie Machetto on

Desperation is why they are driving up the pressure. They are trying to scare Glen into signing him because it’s becoming clearer the longer that Peca isn’t signed by the Rangers that the Rangers are cooling on the idea of signing him. Making that demand is trying to bully Sather into making the move, because if he didn’t do it by today anyway, he most likely wasn’t going to.

Columbus isn’t going anywhere, you know what I mean? There’s no pressure on Peca to make that demand because if he wanted to make Columbus wait, they would. It’s playing hardball with Sather, plain and simple. And for how much of a flaw his ego is sometimes, it’s going to be his strength this time because he won’t be bullied.

  131. spin we must, everybody’s got to get into the act. Peca will have a contract with a team by the end of the week. The guy wants to move to get his kids in school. He needs a job. This is not a bluff or a negoiation game, nor being bullied. Yes or no,very simple and respectful.

  132. Doodie Machetto on

imagination, I hear what you’re saying, but by making that demand, he’s essentially saying to Sather, “sign me today or I’m going somewhere else.” That’s a bully tactic, regardless of what the motivation behind it is, although I agree with you that it is probably personal instead of business.

  133. Doodie Machetto on

Funniest thing I’ve read today (from Michael Arace at the Columbus Dispatch, talking about the Peca situation):

“Monday was supposed to be an important day. The Rangers have been talking with Peca’s superagent, Don Meehan, for weeks. The two sides are allegedly close to a deal. But it’s not done. Why? *Maybe Rangers GM Glen Sather is on vacation. That man can flat-out recreate.*”

haha, I’m glad his vacationing skills haven’t gone unnoticed.

  134. max payne – No compensatory pick for Olver…he wasn’t signed by the deadline, he’s an UFA as far as I know. He’s definitely too old to re-enter the draft…

ORR – I highly doubt you’ll see either Dubinsky or Anisimov in as third-line pivot. Without Peca, Avery becomes the most logical choice. He has the most experience at center. As far as I know, he only recently started playing left wing. On third, he wouldn’t need to be as lethal in the face-off circle and, if paired with a pair of hustling scorers like Cally and Prucha, could probably be the last piece of rolling three scoring lines.

If for no other reason than to prove Eklund wrong AGAIN, I want Peca to sign elsewhere. And like I said, if he really wants to play in NY, then enroll the kids in school, hit the gym and come into camp the biggest baddest thirdline center this league has seen…

  136. ORR Knocks Em Out, Jagr Starts to Pout, Prucha Begins to Doubt, Dont know What Thats About!!! on

The staffss lines would be this

    Hossa – Gomez – Jagr
    Straka – Drury – Shanahan
    Prucha – Peca / Ansimov / Dubinsky – Avery
    Callahan – Betts – Orrwegg / Dawes

    Did i leave anyone out??

  137. Doodie Machetto on

tdchi, Don’t forget about the Straka as an option for third line pivot, especially if Hossa comes into camp with the form he had with Jags when Nylander centered them.

  138. The lines won’t even be thought about until Renney sees Straka in action. How well his knees and shoulder have healed will determine everything.

Having either Avery or Straka as a center is a huge mistake. Neither does well on draws and neither actually makes their wingers better.

The poster who said a 3rd line center doesn’t need to be lethal on faceoffs is wrong. That’s the 3rd/4th line center’s primary role. You know who took the last draw that won us the Cup? Not Messier. Craig MacTavish. 4th line center.

If Straka is healthy, I see the lines shaking out as:

    Straka – Gomez – Jagr
    Prucha – Drury – Shanahan
    Avery – ????? – Callahan
    Hossa – Betts – Hollweg / Orr

If Straka for some reason isn’t ready, I see Hossa jump to the #1 line and Hollweg and Orr both playing.

  139. tdchi would you move your family for a maybe job, or take a guarranteed job?
Don’t ask somebody to do something you wouldn’t do. And I thought Sather had the market cornered on ego & arrogance. Wait until Meehan plays the same games with Sather for Lundquist’s contract. You better hope Montoya’s ready if Sather thinks he’s going to jerk The King & his agent around. That’s how Meehan will make the world round if Sather refuses to respond with a yes or no. Respect is a two way street.

  140. from BB…UPDATE: Michael Peca’s agent was just on AM640 radio in Toronto and suggested that Peca has two offers in hand and will decide by the end of the day today which one he will take. No word on which two teams they may be, except that Toronto is not one of them. Is the end finally nigh? [See Pucks on Broadway for a partial transcription of the radio comments.]”

  141. Doodie Machetto on

In other words, Columbus and NY, NY’s being less money or years than Columbus.

  142. Doodie they’re both 1 year deals. It sounds like the NYR made an offer, along with Columbus. He’ll take NY if that’s his choices.

  143. Doodie Machetto on

BTW, wouldn’t that be a swap: We get Peca and Gomez from the Isles and Devils, respectively, and all they’ve picked up from us is Poti (temporarily), York (temporarily), Dunham(temporarily) and Simon for the Isles, and LaCouture (temporarily), Rachunek, and Weekes.

Talk about one sided. Goes to show how much better playing for NYR is than NYI or NJD.

  144. Doodie Machetto on

bklynblue, if the terms are the same and he’s thinking about it, that means the money being offered is different. Otherwise it’s a no brainer and he would’ve made the deal already.

  145. Doodie that sounds safe to assume. He approached the NYR & has to be crazy not to accept NY over Columbus. He now has to be polite to Columbus & return some grief to Sather, nicely. I’ll stick my neck out & say he picks the NYR.

  149. Doodie Machetto on

Of course, it should be noted that Meehan could still be playing hardball with Slats. It is possible that neither of the two teams is the NYR. Meehan going on the radio to talk about Peca having two offers and his decision coming tonight could be a hardball tactic to try and coax Sather into throwing his hat into the ring.

I know that in all likelihood, Peca will be a Ranger by the end of business tomorrow, but I love to speculate over this now because I’m so desperate for hockey.

  150. Doodie if Sather didn’t call him today, which is pretty obvious he did, he’d be foolish which he is not.

  151. Peca Won’t Be a Ranger
Michael Peca will not be a Ranger this season.

Agent Don Meehan confirmed moments ago that the Rangers did not make Peca a contract offer.

Meehan said that he expected to complete negotiation on a one-year deal for the 33-year-old center within a couple of hours. Columbus appears to be the city where the former Islanders captain will be playing his home games this season.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/rangers/2007/08/peca_wont_be_a_ranger.html

  152. This is from Steve Zipay’s blog:

After an odd and somewhat prolonged courtship for a player seeking a one-year deal, the Rangers and free agent center Mike Peca have gone their separate ways.
According to Don Meehan, Peca’s agent, he was trying to conclude a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight after speaking with Rangers GM Glen Sather.
“The Rangers are out on Peca,” Meehan said in a phone interview a few moments ago. “I spoke with Glen and we both decided to go our own ways.”
The Rangers decided not to make an offer, with Sather and coach Tom Renney feeling it was best “to give our young guys a chance,” a Rangers spokesman said. “Meehan and Peca were both great throughout the process.”
Peca, 33, had been in New York for a physical and interviews with Rangers brass, and it appeared a deal was close with the former Islander and Sabre in the $1 million to $1.5 million range.
But Meehan said Sather was taking too long to make up his mind and got impatient, as did Peca, who played just 35 games last season after breaking his right leg in late December.
If healthy, Peca could have helped the Rangers with his defensive and faceoff skills.
Instead it appears, Brandon Dubinsky or another youngster could win the job in camp.

  153. AngelusMortis on

I don’t think that it’s a bad thing Slats didn’t offer a contract to Peca. Yes, he’s a great defensive player that the team really could have utilized, but Dubinsky or one of the other kids should be able to fill the third line spot, and they’ll have some cap room to work with later in the season, hopefully for a first pair defenseman.

  154. I doubt you’ll see Dubinsky there as 3rd line center. Straka is more than likely the choice.

  155. But Comrade Doodie aren’t we now Peca-less for season??

Sure hope we don’t meet Mighty Columbus Blue Parkas in Stanley Cup Finals. Between Peca and Federov they will Selke Award us to death

  156. Doodie Machetto on

kaspar, you should be happy. more cap space for a certain Lithuanian-born defensman to avoid being stranded in hartford.

  157. Yes Doodie I am happy for that but still I dream of hearing Comrade Rosen calling this;

Peca pokes the puck to the point to Pock, Pock picks the puck up, passes to Prucha. Prucha pirouettes passed the post
    and puts the puck in!!!

the play is possibly on on PK

  158. czechthemout!!!!! on

bklynblue-i guess they agree with me after all!!!they did not even make him an offer.and i think that dubinsky WILL be given a good chance to take the third spot.

  159. well I guess we will just trade prucha and a first rounder at the trade deadline for Peca now….

  160. czech _ I have a feeling that come trade deadline we’ll be trading our number 1 pick plus for a decent 3rd line center.
Peca was not the answer probably either but the team screwed up their cap mgt this summer and lost their 3rd center to Carolina for a bag of pucks.

  161. Kaspar, you are poetic magic.

Now that we can finally put this to rest, Dawes is almost a lock to make the team; forget Dubinsky and Anisimov. As I stated previously, I have a gut feeling (similar to Willie Randolph’s lineup moves) that Callahan will work well on the fourth line because he seems to be the toughest of the guys who ended the season on the top three wings; Hossa is a possibility, but will be better utilized on a higher line. I know Prucha has taken faceoffs on power plays, but I’m not sure if they will use him at center for a line, so Avery will probably center that third line, not Straka because of his shoulder/arm issues. I think Prucha and Dawes will set up as his wings, with Straka on second line, maybe switch Dawes and Straka. We shall see how things turn out. There is still the defense to address as well. I think they can only get better there by subtraction at this point, in order to add Kaspar back into the fold.

  162. czech your way off but keep trying to convince yourself you should be GM. They seriously considered Peca. So stop the act. You & Sather are not on the same wavelength. You talk about drama, look in the mirror.

  163. imagination – if it meant the difference between what I’m making now(far less than Peca made as an AHLer) and what Peca was asking, then F-yeah. I’d tell those little snot-nosed brats to stay put where ever the hell they are and Daddy is going to be away until he brings home the bacon. Don’t pull this jive with trying to feel sorry for pro athletes. They’ve got the life. Yeah, it’s tough at times, but so is life. In my business, I get jerked the hell around all day, all week, all month and all year. If I get laid off, chances are pretty good I’ll have to move to another city AT LEAST, perhaps another state. So do I feel bad for Captain Millions over there? I think not. Not even in the least, especially seeing as though I have to pay 10 bucks everytime I lace’em up.

But who cares? He’s not a Ranger and that’s a damn good thing(insert Happy Dance). He can rot in Columbus for all I care.

Doodie – I wouldn’t discount Straks as a third-line center were he not making as much as he is. Here are my ideal lines:

    Hoss-Gomer-Jager
    Straka-Drury-Shanny
    Pruca-Avery-Callahan
    Orr/Hollweg-Betts-Dawes
    Malik-Roszy
    Tyutin-Kaspar(if he’s in good form)
    Girardi-Mara
    Pock as number seven

    Lundqvist-Valleycat

Doubt that team fits under the cap, so take your pick between Mara and Kaspar; whoever comes in fried-chicken- eating-fat gets kicked to another team. If Dawes can’t break into the top lines(via injury or otherwise), then maybe consider Bourret in his stead. He’s supposed to be a mini-Avery anyway.

  164. Unless Straka has a terrible year, I can’t see him going back to center, especially on the third line. He’s much more effective on the left wing and has good chemistry with Jagr.

  165. czechthemout!!!!! on

bklynblue-“czech your way off but keep trying to convince yourself you should be GM. They seriously considered Peca. So stop the act. You & Sather are not on the same wavelength. You talk about drama, look in the mirror.”

talk about being on the same wavelength.how do you know they seriously considered peca? were you in the room during the meetings he had with the team.or during their discussion after the meeting? and i am not trying to convince my self of anything.i am merely expressing my opinion on the matter just like you and everyone else on this and other fan blogs.i am merely stating the facts as they appear to be.

fact-peca never got an offer from the team.
fact-the team was approached by meehan and peca.
fact-they told him they had zero interest!
fact-no one else other than columbus has any interest in him
and that may also be a smoke screen by meehan to try to force the rangers into signing him.
fact-the team seems to have made a commitment to adding some home grown talent to the lineup.therefore no peca.

  166. people seem to think the 3rd line does not matter. If Avery or Straka makes the team better by playing 3rd center they will do so regardless of how much they make. If it’s a Dubinsky who mgt thinks makes the team the best then he will be the 3rd center (and it’s not just offense but both sides of the equation – this is not fantasy hockey). As I said above it’s not about having the best 2 lines with the 6 highest paid guys and letting them all play 25 minutes / game. It’s much more of a balancing act for the top 3 lines at least. Yes the 3rd line will play somewhat less (depending on pk and pp duties). But how much Straka makes will have nothing to do with where the team puts him.

  167. It really seems like Sather has learned his lesson. Pre-lockout Sather would have signed Peca in a heartbeat, old age and injury history be damned, he’s Michael Peca, a “star”. Smart, very smart non-move by Slats.

  168. Peca to Columbus is a done deal pending his physical, which he may fail.

We’ll never know what really happened. Maybe Sather was just helping his buddy Meehan out by generating some interest in Peca. Then again, maybe he was helping him out (a favor that would have been returned via easier Lundqvist negotiations) by agreeing to sign Peca cheap and we all just lucked out that Svitov went back to Russia.

There’s a reason why things happen the way they do. Just like the Rangers had to go right after and negotiate $7 million deals with Drury and Gomez within 6 hours of free agency, the Rngers had all the time in the world and would have had to pay Peca less than Prucha. nobody else wantyed him until Columbus was toatlly desparate. There is a reason why, whether its locker room chemistry or his current abilities. Very often, you get what you pay for.

  170. Ansimov just booked a flight to the East Coast, Dubinsky, Pyatt and Dupont hit the gym – looks like it will be an interesting camp – in 3 weeks..!!
If what NHL.com says is correct Pyatt could be the dark horse. According to Hockeysfuture.com Pyatt needs to show more consistency, Ansimov needs to add some muscle(and might need a year at Hartford acclimatising to North America), Dubinsky needs to be more disciplined and Dupont looks good, but might be a bit young.

Now that the Peca saga is over – i’ll be hoping not to see names like Forsberg and Allison mentioned.
One question though – is Immonen gone for good?

  171. Robby Bonfire on

I was thinking, yesterday, about the basic difference between the NY Rangers, the Phillies, the Yankees – and the Philadelphia Eagles, who just cut former and quite popular MLB, Jeremiah Trotter.

See, the Eagles are the one team, of those mentioned above, who have the GUTS to cut a big name player as soon as he has lost a step – getting beyond player career downside production fakery, and the “clubhouse mentor and leadership” garbage in the process.

The Phillies, coddling the likes of Moyer, Alfonseca, Mesa, Gordon, and that old gas bag Lieber (before he hit the career-ending injury brick wall) don’t have a clue in hell, and neither do the Yankees, what with their fielding the oldest team in baseball history (34 1/2 average age), in 2005.

The Eagles WILL WIN a Super Bowl in the Reid era – mark my words, they are so sharp and on top of the TIMING aspect of player personnel moves, and sentiment and past contributions by a player be damned, when it comes to making these “unpopular” but nearly always correct decisions – which help the team!

As for the Rangers, thanks to the cap, and the “bind” it puts Sather in, when it comes to signing old guys, they too, have a chance for glory, in the next three years – with a basically young contingent.

This is a great day for the Rangers franchise – another deserving kid will make the opening day roster coming out of camp. Screw the “Old Folks Home” franchises of the world. And thank God for the NHL salary cap.

  172. czech the NYR don’t bring a Peca in for show. I have it from a reliable source that the rest of the brass wanted him signed. Why they didn’t only Sather can answer, but I doubt he’ll comment completely.
tdchi I wasn’t feeling sorry for him. But for you to ask a player to come with no contract was unreasonable, and I’m not even sure if it’s allowed by the NHL.
Meehan won’t forget how Sather didnt return his calls when it’s time for Lundquist’s contract. Let’s see how arrogant Sather will be then, and how he likes it if his calls aren’t returned.

  173. czech & tdchi…“We had a deal in place with the Rangers for almost three weeks now,â€? Peca said. “It just doesn’t seem like the commitment has been there from the general manager (Glen Sather) to get it done.”….NEXT!

  174. Doodie Machetto on

Well, with Peca a Blue Jacket, there is officially nothing interesting to talk about. See you guys when camp starts/another big rumor starts (Jovo doesn’t count because it’s preposterous).

  175. Bonfire – so great to see you back ;-)

The key difference in the NFL is that it is so much easier to cut players based on the rules they have set up, and then not pay them, even though it still hits the salary cap. It’s unlike the situation in any other sport. NBA & NHL require buyouts for large contracts and MLB people still get paid when they are waived. So I don’t see how that has *anything* to do with the Rangers. When did this turn into the Eagles blog?

  176. Half the comments I’m reading here are utter nonsense.

Anyone who thinks Peca is a better 3rd line option than Dubinsky is nuts. If anyone saw Dubinsky play last year, they can see the kid has size, grit and hands. Give him a shot.

Anyone who thinks their paying Straka $3 million some-odd to be a 3rd line center is nuts. Anyone who automatically puts Hossa back on the 1st line just because he had a dozen good games there (amidst an otherwise unremarkable career) is nuts.

Anyone who puts Avery between Dawes and Prucha on the 3rd line is nuts. That’s the smallest line in Ranger history.

People…Think realistically for a second…Gomez will definitely center Jagr and Straka…Drury should center Prucha and Shanny but more likely it will be Avery instead of Prucha. If the 3rd line is Prucha, Dubinsky and Callahan, that’s a solid 3rd line. And if Hossa improved so greatly on the defensive side of the puck (like Renney says), he should be on a shut-down line with Betts, and Hollweg. Hollweg isn’t a shut down player, but he forces people to pay attention when he’s on the ice and Betts one of our best defensive forwards.

  177. Nooooo! Its OVER! ITS ALL OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that Peca is gone, what the HELL will we talk about!!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever been this hockey-crazed in my entire life. I’m about to start taping my chelsea piers league games just so I have something to watch.

  178. I am glad peca is not a ranger. I said it from the beginning, no peca. if it is true that sather and renney stated that they want to give the kids a chance it’s about time.

  179. OK, new topic;

Is Komodant Sather a genius tough guy for how he treat Avery and Peca (while he spoils All-American Drury and goofy looking Gomez Adams)

    or…

Is big boss chairman slowly losing mind? Having Oiler flashbacks? Thinking he already owns the cup (like when he was in Siberia)Making people beg to play beside Gretzky and Messier?

Don’t tell him I ask though

  180. Sorry for anyone who is too DENSE to understand and appreciate a cutting-edge organization dumping a 30-year old, big-name player, on merit, rather than keeping him on reputation. But we all have detractors here who would rather take personal issue with some contributors here, than acknowledge the reality of the difference between class and half-ass professional sports organizations.

  181. Rangers would love to cut me and save money (2.89)…but unlike NFL slavery contracts they are stuck with me.
Has nothing to do with “class” or “guts” they just Cannot do it…weakened NHLPA still better than NFLPA for looking out for guaranteed contracts. thats why class Eagles can cut Trotter and win so many super bowls

  182. Robby Bonfire on

Your point is valid, and not in conflict with my point, which, I still maintain, is that too many professional sports franchises retain former star players who have devolved into journeymen geriatrics. Also, if Trotter had shown something in camp, he had the MLB job in Philadelphia this year, on first and second down. The Eagles axed Trotter because he was a bust in the New Orleans playoff loss, last year, and showed nothing (but diminished speed and reaction time) in camp this year.

Yes, politics enters into all decision-making in professional sports, these days, but some teams, like the Eagles, still prefer to pay a short-term price, rather than sabotage next year and beyond. Most franchises would have waited until McNabb was 34 or 35 before drafting his successor. The Eagles have already taken care of that at McNabb’s age of 30. This is a brilliant brain-trust organization, light-years ahead of the pack, with few exceptions.

  183. Bonfire this is a Rangers blog not an Eagles blog. As for football teams they cut vets all the time since they can avoid most of the contract hit to their cap that way. In hockey for now a team can send a guy to the AHL and avoid a cap hit like the RAngers will with Kaspar. You consistenly have an edge when you “talk to people here” as if you truly believe you’re superior intellectually. Pretty sad.

Peter – if you’re the same Peter that posts on these blogs. I very seldom agree with you and this time is no exception. Especially with regard to where Straka will play. It has nothing and will have nothing to do with how much he gets paid as to where he plays. I’m pretty sure that the so called top 6 forwards will not all be the top 6 paid forwards on the team. Even though in your attitude you think that is nuts (or other points re people who have a different opinion than you are nuts). I hate when Ranger fans feel they have to talk that way to other fans (meaning those fans who keep the same user name).
