News and insight about the New York Rangers by Rick Carpiniello

Let the madness begin

Posted by: Sam Weinman - Posted in Uncategorized on Jul 01, 2007

I believe the first story I wrote as Rangers beat writer last year was the team announcing the signing of Brendan Shanahan—which is to say, I missed all of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to that point.

Today will be my first full go-round on “the free agency carousel”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070701/SPORTS01/707010351/1034/SPORTS, and I’ve already asked a lot of questions about what to expect. Many of you know the answer better than I.

I’m told it will be quite frenetic almost immediately. I’m told there will be plenty of speculation. I’m told much of it will be wrong.

Many of you have come to know this blog as a forum for news, insights, and yes, the occasional rumor. We can certainly dip our feet into that pool over the next few days. But I probably won’t entertain every single whisper being tossed around on other message boards and blogs unless they’re rooted in something resembling truth.

Otherwise, we might all go crazy.

Either way, this should be fun. I think everyone expects the Rangers to be very active (“here’s my story from today’s paper”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070701/SPORTS01/707010351/1034/SPORTS elaborating on as much) both looking outside their organization, and of course, trying to hold on to their own valuable assets.

As always, stay tuned…

Should be fun, especially since Sather has been so quiet and not really signing ANYBODY lately. I expect the first big splash to be us nabbing Drury.

  2. Frank

Give us some juciey rumors!! :D

  3. Joe

Nabbing Drury would make me a happy man. However, all speculation at this point says that he will head West.

  4. AngelusMortis

Not much longer now…hopefully we don’t see Nylander go in the first day of signing. I’m really surprised Sather’s just going to let him hit the market, and didn’t make any more attempt to negotiate something else. I guess it could be worse. He could be Darcy Rieger and lose his co-captains and arguably his two best players today.

    38 min and counting…

sam—hearing anything outside of the normal rumors?? everyone is talking about gomez, drury, etc but with things so quiet it makes me wonder if maybe sather has his sights set on someone we aren’t expecting…

  7. ORR Kicks Yin Yang

Gomez…Briere…And Drury will wait till the final minute just like they did last year..

So all of you who cant wait to see what happens…Grab a seat…Snatch a beer…Its gonna be a waiting game…

I just hope NYR does something today….I didnt wake up this early just to look at what other teams will be doing…

  8. AngelusMortis

I’d love to see the Rangers pick up Rafalski. He can quarterback the powerplay, he has a hell of a shot from the blueline, and best of all, it would be taking away someone the Devils want to re-sign so badly. However, our need for a center and lack of a huge budget will probably force us to look elsewhere for a powerplay QB.

  9. Robby Bonfire

BRANDON – Check my little missive to you under the previous “Officially Impressed” posting. You will “adore” it. LOL.

  13. RB

I wonder if the Rangers will make a pitch for bertuzzi?

  14. CML

I hope not. I hate bertuzzi.

  15. Chris F.

    NO to Bertuzzi!! Hopefully…wrong guy…

  16. Chris F.

    Oh no!

Pascal Dupuis re-upped with the Thrashers. Darn.

  17. AngelusMortis

If Slats went after Bertuzzi, I’d become an Islanders fan.

  18. Lauren

  21. CML

I’m going to have to go somewhere at 1. Can you guys post who the Rangers get so I can just check back later?? Thanks.

  22. LI Joe

Joe Thorton resigned with SJ 3 yrs $ 7.2 mm / yr

  23. Go NYR

    We need to resign Nylander

  24. ORR Kicks Yin Yang

For all of you who want Thornton next season….Thats not happening….He got a 3 year extension…

  25. ORR Kicks Yin Yang

Thanks for the link Avery…Good stuff

  26. AngelusMortis

#3 place you wouldn’t want to play: Long Island.

  27. ORR Kicks Yin Yang

Speaking of the boring part of New York….Any chance NYI will lose Jason Blake

  28. RB

Bertuzzi would be way better then Hossa on the Jagr line

  29. AngelusMortis

There’s a pretty good chance the ‘Sticks could lose Blake, from what I’ve heard.

  30. Chris F.

Is there anyone running a non-video equivalent of that TSN coverage? ESPN blows…Hockeybuzz is eh…

  31. Go NYR

I would never play for the Islanders. The fans are trashy and the Mausoleum is a landfill.

  34. AngelusMortis

Pierre McGuire said a big deal is coming close…

  35. Chris F.

    Thanks.

  36. Koala

Hi it is koala again !

I think Nylander will end up somewhere else where he can get more money and I think that Drury will end up with the Kings as Briere will go probably to Oilers as TSN are reporting that Edmonton is looking for a big name as I heard that Briere travelled to the west beeing more close to his agent…

Let´s hope that the Rangers can get probably Gomez…!!!

  37. Chris F.

There can be no doubt that free agents (most of whom aren’t that great) will be overpaid this year. Especially centers, which is rough for us.

  38. Peter

First I heard Nylander accepted 3 years at 11.5 million from NYR. Now I’m hearing he outright rejected NYR offer of 3 years, $14 million and is looking at 4 years, $24 million from Philthy.

We may end up empty handed today…

  39. Chris F.

Where did you hear that, Peter?

  40. AngelusMortis

Peter, where did you hear that Nylander rejected a 3 yr/$14 mil offer?

  41. Peter

Apparently someone heard it on Swedish radio, but we all know how reliable that is. I’m just passing along whatever I hear since I’m not particularly out to be a credible journalist at this point. So make of it what you will.

  42. calhob

Thefourthperiod.com has realtime updates….rumors and trades and signings.
    It’s pretty good,

  43. Koala

After Thornton is resigned by the Sharks, I don ´t think they can hold on to Marleau…

I don´t know if he is a name for the Rangers…Oh man all those names swirling all around the league..That will be very interesting early morning, absolutely…listening to TSN free agents frenzy…

  44. Rob S

    Schnieder to ducks

  45. Kris

    Cool.
