Hold that signing ceremony

I am not sure it would be fair to question the integrity of all of Swedish journalism, since I’m sure some of it is actually grounded in truth.

But we are now batting .000 when citing Swedish reports. First it was the Rangers’ agreeing to a new lucrative contract with Henrik Lundqvist shortly after the season. Now it’s yesterday’s report that the Rangers being close to a deal with Michael Nylander.

Maybe the Swedes aren’t misinformed as much as they are just hopelessly optimistic.

Either way, it now doesn’t sound like the Rangers are as close with Nylander as we thought. I spoke to his agent Mike Gillis a few minutes ago and the agent didn’t offer up much. Either it’s me, or there’s nothing new to report.

We shall see….

also, UFAs are for teams that finished last or had a firesale or teams that barely have any good prospects.

I’d hate to think Sather is giving Nylander the boot to try to go for broke this summer on a pricey UFA, especially since Nylander and Jagr have such good chemistry. I’m also perplexed as to why he’s also looking to get rid of Ortmeyer. He and Betts proved to be one of the best forward penalty kill pairs this year. Then again, this is the same man who would trade away a franchise defenseman to “rebuild,” so who knows.

  3. Sorry for sort of a re-post, but Larry Brooks seems to be saying today that Nylander is being let go?

  4. That photo shows nothing — he’s an athlete. I could show you a photo of a flyweight boxer in action and you wouldn’t be able to gauge his size in an action shot.

BTW the Devils are getting really thin at forward especially if they lose Gomez, I bet they will go after some scoring center. They got plenty of cap room to get Drury or Briere or Gomez.

those boxers are probably 5’3″ Prucha is over 5’11”

Sam, don’t sweat it. The European newspapers should be taken with a grain of salt. Remember the reports last year from the Czech papers about Jagr being overweight from binging on pancakes?

  8. Ivana Kachanatsov on

I also find it funny how most fans are so Ranger-centric as if there are no 29 other teams that are also looking for UFAs and most of them need UFAs more than we do and most of them have more cap space than we do.

  9. I do NOT want him re-signed. He is asking WAY too much money and should have taken the 3 year 10 mill we offered. Ridiculous money for a guy who won’t score 10 goals without Jagr. Ridiculous. Shanny will take less just to stay with us for a drive to the CUP>

No long term signings for old guys. Give the money to Gomez, who, under an offensive system, will go and score 30 goals at age 26. Nylander will be zip without Jagr and after Jags retires, we will be stuck with a HUGE contract.

We have got youth, and we’ve got our sights on some free agents. If it was Sather’s decision to let him walk, it will be a great move by Sather!

Do we want to pay 4 or 5 million for a 38 year old AFTER Jags is gone? We have a history of overpaying vets and I hope that that chapter is closed…

Shanny is the exception, but even Shanny the Tranny will take LESS money (incentives!) just to stay with us. He is a true leader and with a healthy Jagr, as well as a few good rookies, two good signings, and an improved defense (we already improved by dropping Rachunek, now if Malik just goes…) we ARE legitimate CUP contenders!

    No more mercs!

  10. Seamus… if you can’t see the value of Nylander… then you haven’t been watching this team for the past 2 seasons.

  11. I think Nylander is more valuabale to us then most other teams, and he knows it. Lets see what happens after the smoke settles, I don’t expect Nylander to be the first of top 5 UFAs to go.

  12. What team with cap space plays the Euro-style game that will allow Nylander to play at his best as well as have a shot at reaching Playoffs?

  13. Ivana Kachanatsov on

Gomez is going to be 28 in December and the funniest thing about him is that he scored only 14 goals in 65 ECHL games during the lockout.

  14. Actually, the Devils have very little cap room to work with. If they had more room in the cap, they would at least try to resign Gomez. But instead, it appears as if they are letting him walk.

  15. Ivana Kachanatsov on

Maybe Gomez wants to go elsewhere or test the market. Maybe they don’t think his 13 goals is worth 7 million.

  16. ORR Kicks Yin Yang on

Mike Peca is gonna test the market…

The Yotes put Boynton and some other guy on waivers…

I just read that Prucha said…”its not about the money, i just wanna stay in New York”

Ya gotta love the kid…He better be back in 07 – 08

    nyrich and joe

Shut the fuck up you pukies you know noting about hockey and you sound like a bunch of balck guys talking about it

What the hells your problem…Take that crap some where else…

The only thing you know about hockey is how to f up a whole team…Your future as a GM is looking pretty dim…

  19. I heard on a hockey website, hockeybuzz.com today that Gomez to the Rangers is now extremely likeley and that the Rangers are heavily interested in Michael Handzus as another center option should Nylander not resign. What does everyone think of that scenario? Gomez centering Shanny and Handzus centering Jags?

  20. I’d rather have Comrie or Zubrus over Handzus to center with Jagr. Even though Handzus is a decent player, a lot of questions are surrounding him and the possibility that he will get hurt seriously again.

  21. ORR Kicks Yin Yang on

Handzus on NYR isnt that bad of a scenario…As long as he can stay healthey and at least play 75 games…

In my opinion…Handzus getting traded is what destroyed the Flyers…But thats just my opiniion…

Alot of people dont think he’s a force…Only because last time NYR fans remembered him he was a…..Flyer….ugh….But he missed a whole year of hockey in CHI just like Peca in TOR…So who knows…

I cant see why CHI would sign Samsonov and not re sign Handzus…

  22. ORR Kicks Yin Yang on

I do think NYR should go after Zubrus…I was impressed with his defensive skills in the playoffs…his strength etc.

Also he has offensive skills i can see him playing with Jags or Maybe he can be the guy who has good chemistry with Pruch…Its something Sather should consider…It wouldnt be a bad option if we miss out on Drury..Briere..or Gomez..Id pick him over Lang…

  23. ORR Kicks Yin Yang on

Yeah…Imagine him on the team…I think Giardi..Nylander..and Lundqvist might have to initiate him into the club…Maybe take a couple of slapshots in the foot

  24. ouch I don’t like handzus and I agree with those that do not want gomez. Thats like trading foe nedved twice. I would take nylander over gomez. he competes and despite his size can get to the front of the net.

sign drury shanahan and nylander. I think we need to build on last years team chemistry not start over.

  25. AngelusMortis on

What does everyone think about Paul Kariya? It was announced today that Nashville isn’t going to re-sign him. He had 24 goals and 76 points last season. Given, he is a left wing, and we’ve got enough of those. Just a little what if.

  26. I wouldn’t blame Jagr if he overloaded on pancakes over the summer – the Czech’s really know their pancakes. I found a really good cafe on the castle side of the Charles Bridge in Prague – banana pancakes, strawberry&cream pancakes….. plus really good coffee (which is not easy to find in Prague).

As for signings – my personal preferences would be to re-sign Nyls and then sign Gomer (and then work a trade to rid ourselves of Malik). I guess by monday morning things will be a lot clearer….

Seamus… if you can’t see the value of Nylander… then you haven’t been watching this team for the past 2 seasons.>

Hanny, I have watched all but, perhaps 1 or 2 games in the past 2 seasons. Nylander has played very well. I just do not see him playing at that level with Jagr. (see Kov, Nedvd, etc). Also, given his age, and the fact that his contract will extend BEYOND what we expect to see Jagr on the ice for, it will be a huge mistake.

I do not believe that Nylander should have turned down the generous offer we gave at the end of the season. He has made a lot of money and was getting a big raise. It was not big enough for him. Let him go.

Do you really want to be paying Nylander, at age 38, SANS Jagr, 4 or 5 million dollars against the CAP?

We will regret it. No way does Nylander even come close to POINT PER GAME without the JARG EFFECT. No chance. Someone else will pay him for playing with Jagr the past two seasons and will see that this soft Euro is not an elite player without a Jagr type.
