I'm personally very happy with the pick. The draft was weak: no players are guaranteed successes (excluding Kane). Cherepanov was at one time the #1 ranked player in the draft, and was the #1 ranked Euro. Sure, there's a potential that he turns into a big bust, but the safe picks in this draft just weren't any good. The reward is potentially amazing- we finally would have that dynamic scorer in our system. I'm even happy that he is spending another year with Omsk, it'll toughen him up a lot more than a year on the Pack would. Ballsy move with potentially HUGE upside. Of course, worst-case scenario is that he turns into Jan Marek.

PS, Panthers traded for Vokoun. Therefore, two Eastern Conference teams just made huge upgrades in goal today.

Goodnight, excited about tomorrow

yeah, but our scouts are among the worst and 16 teams passed on Cherepanov for a reason other than the lack of agreement"

This has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read here as a comment.

My goodness.

You're obviously not a Rangers fan. Pretty clear here that you have an agenda.

I hope Jack Downing gets drafted. He's had a bad season because of his injury; but he is tough, and who doesn't love a fighter? Remember that he got hurt in the USHL annual Jamboree (where the best of the best come to play each other, so we know he is good to even get there). He's one of only 5 Tier A, USHL players (like Petreki and Pacioretty). He's got soft hands and is fast. He still needs some time to mature more, but what player in this draft doesn't? Jack even has already been practicing with his Vermont U. team, which will do him well in maturing. He is hardworking and and it would be amazing so see another player from CT be drafted.

sadly I just looked at Omsk stats and they were loaded with scorers last season, so Cherepanov indeed might not be as good as his stats.

CML -

Tough to say. I haven't seen the other guys play. Jack Downing's stock took a hit because of injuries and of all things sports-induced asthma this year, so he's ranked at 114 or so. He may go in the later rounds but doesn't neceaarily strike me as a sleeper pick. Again that's just from reading up on the guy. McKenzie will go in the third round or so. Taft really is the place to go if you can play around here.

Its hard to say if this is a bad draft class, though there is clearly no Nash, Ovechkin or Crosby. To get a high upside guy to add to the prospect inventory is a good risk for NYR. This team is not going to have a lot of open slots over the next couple of years assuming Nylander and the RFAs get signed.
I wonder w/ Toskala going to the Leafs, can the Rangers put together a package headlined by Montoya to the Sharks for Marleau.
