Statement from Slats

71

Glen Sather came out with an official statement about Don Maloney’s departure. Sadly, nowhere does he say something along the lines of, “I’m glad he had the good sense to realize he was never going to get my job. Never, I say! Never!”

Anyway, here’s the real statement:

“On behalf of the entire Rangers organization, I would like to congratulate Don Maloney on being named the new General Manager of the Phoenix Coyotes. Don has been an integral part of the Rangers for most of the last four decades, as both a distinguished player and an invaluable assistant general manager for the last ten years. He has played a vital role in the acquisition and development of the many young players and prospects in our organization. We wish Don all the best in his new position and thank him for his dedication, tireless work ethic and significant contributions to the New York Rangers during his tenure.”

YAWN!!!!!!!! Pshh, im glad Don Maloney is gone, now it makes room for Mess to come in and slowly but shortly take over Sathers job and finally bring the Cup back to the garden.

Dont agree with me? Wait and see…

  2. Believeyou? on

Nope, I don’t agree with you… And I’d rather not wait and see. Heres to hoping Messier doesn’t ever get any sniff of the Rangers GM position…

  3. A. Burghard on

I don’t agree with you. Maloney made this team by making smart decisions, which is something that was once rare and plagued the Rangers at trade deadlines and drafts for quite some time. Sather is a cigar smoking idiot. Putting our faith into him and someone else to take the reigns of this team and keep them steadily in the direction Maloney put them in is going to be hard. I love Messier, he is a phenomal man and has a great intelligence with hockey. Maloney had already proven himself in GM worthy positioning though. We just lost a huge value to this team. Who is to say Messier, or anyone esle, will make such great decisions for the team….

  4. Who’s to say Mess won’t? As far as I can tell… and believe me I read this daily like the rest of you, and this is my first post, none of you know a thing about front office jobs. All you see is the byproduct of a business that for years, was failing miserably, and you think you know the process behind it like the back of your hand. News flash: Building a successful franchise with yourself as the GM in NHL 07′ doesn’t make you a good GM, and more imporantly doesn’t mean a thing in the real world.

Sit back like the rest of us and wait. It’s the grit, determination, discipline and skill of our coaching staff, and team that will win us a cup, not a big shot in an office chair. Get that through your heads, and just enjoy the game.

  5. Hey Sam,

I think in your article you noted the other candidates, besides Mess, who may have an outside chance at the assistant GM job. I, for one, would wholly embrace Adam Graves for the job. He is one of the best guys and bleeds Blue. He returned to the organization to work for them even after years before when Glen Sather threatened to “retire” Graves before trading him. If not, what are the chances that Shoenfield, who is completely behind our youth movement and has done an awesome job in Hartford, may get the job? Any other outside candidates?

If Mess gets the assistant GM job, hopefully, Sather rides into the sunset. Mess would be more likely than not to bring Leetch into the organization in some role as well as move Gravy up to a higher position, such as assitant GM to Mess. Also, with Mess in management, it bodes well for having Graves jersey finally raised to the rafters after Leetch’s goes up next season. Let’s get Mess, Leetchie, Graves and Richter working for the Rangers in management. They are true Rangers.

  6. ” He has played a vital role in the acquisition and development of the many young players and prospects in our organization…” … So is Sather saying Maloney was only involved with the draft and scouting etc of the kids , not the other GM duties? Sounds like that to me.

I wouldnt want Shoenfeild to take that position… We need him down in Hartford….Hes been phenominal with the youth….Mine as well leave him

  8. I never heard so much about a f*****in ASSISTANT GM job…Who cares? Again, it seems like anything good is Maloney’s doing and anything bad is Sather.

“We fought back against the Alpha Betas and we won!”

  9. ThisYearsModel on

Translation: I called Wayne and pushed Maloney on him so I could get his butt out of here and bring in my boy Mark Messier. His agent and daddy Doug will be here to negotiate his $3 Million per contract next week……unless Vancouver offers more………….

  10. That statement tells me that Sather is not going to pursue comepensation from the Coyotes.

If Sather was going to seek compensation he would come out and praise Maloney for being an integral part of their scouting and drafting. After presenting Maloney in that manner, he would turn around to the league and present his case that his most critical resource for the draft has left, and fair compensation is due.

Instead, we got to hear about how Maloney was great at a bunch of former tasks, while not presenting this transition as a loss for the organization in the short and long term future.

Perhaps I am reading way too much into that statement though.

  11. If Maloney’s job was just ‘ kids’ , Gordie Clark will be Sather’s choice.

  12. Mark "The Messiah" Messier on

    PHIL IS RIGHT.

AND YOU FOOLS THOUGHT MALONEY DID A GREAT JOB? WELL HE HAD THE CHANCE OF DRAFTING PARISE AND INSTEAD DRAFTED DAWES…CASE CLOSED.

  13. Doodie Machetto on

Actually he drafted Jessiman instead of Parise.

I’m not saying “praise Maloney” or “Sather Sucks”, all I’m saying is whatever was in the front office, it was finally starting to work. I think we can all agree that we’re literally one or two players away from being the favorites to win the Cup. Why allow such a large change on the cusp of greatness? Why not stay the course this season and make that serious cup run and THEN allow a change in management?

My beef with Mess is that he’s never done this job before, and this is a legitimate contender. I’d rather have someone who has shown SOME, not even a lot, but SOME experience doing the job.

  14. Doodie Machetto on

Here’s to hoping that this is all a clever trick and the contract actually reads “MALik” instead of “MALoney.”

Here’s also to hoping that Hollweg is dancing in another lockerroom next season (even if it’s Hartford).

  15. Jessiman over Getzlaf, and tons of other great players

Korpikoski over Wolski, Meszaros, Zajac, Bolland, etc.

  16. I would keep Hollweg around instead of useless Orr and play Hollweg in physical games and vs rivals. Other times use the spot to see what prospects can do.

  17. Pork, yes use Hollweg against teams like the Flyers and Caps. You think Hollweg scares anyone? All Hollweg does is punish other peoples knuckles with his face.

  18. his hits are far scarier than Orr’s knuckles. Just ask several guys that he gave concussion to. See, Orr can’t just start fighting anyone, only goons or someone extremely stupid, but Hollweg doesn’t need any permission to hit anybody including star players. But too bad many fans and coaches are too stupid to understand this concept.

  19. Mark "The Messiah" Messier on

I hate Hollweg but we need a moran like him on the team. It makes us look more of a carefull team to play against.

  20. Hindsight is 20-20 people, its easy to sit there and say this now, but during the draft Maloney could only base his decisions on what his scouts have told him. I think we’re going to start seeing the benefit of some of the drafting in the next 2 years – i expect Staal, Sauer and Sanguinetti to appear by 2009 at which point Dawes, Callahan, Dubinsky and possibly even Jessiman might be playing regularly (if he gets another year of tutelidge from Shanny). Plus others like Bourret, Montoya, Korpikoski, Immonen need to be playing soon or traded to fill other holes in the lineup
Plus what rounds did we pick up Henke & Prucha?

What worries me more is that Donnie knows our system inside-out and could use that to the ‘Yotes advantage in gaining some of our younger talent.

  21. ORR kicks Ying Yang on

    PORK ANUS

Talk about useless…Hollweg started hitting….then he started to get girly and just skate around doing nothing.

Im gonna be super pissed if Ortmeyer doesnt get re signed but Hollweg does…2 years is pathetic…he doesnt even diserve 2 games this coming season…

Orr had a career year with 3 points…lol…Its always fun saying that…His 2 goals of the season were pretty big…he had great fights this year…3 knock outs…against Boulton..Jannsen..and of coarse Fedoruk…

I understand that Orrzie is a little slow on skates and doesnt hit as much as hollweg…But this year he WAS the better player…Hollweg WAS NOT…Enough said…

By the way….The only good thing Hollweg did this season was getting butchered by Simon…Cause that game was one of our biggest wins of the season..in game we flat out stole…
I still cant believe hollweg was re signed for 2 years…I dont have anything against him but like i said they brought him back…then theres absolutely no friggin reason they shouldnt bring Ortmeyer back…If Orts aint back…then i will have a personal feud with hollywood…Unless he proves me wrong next season by at least scoring 5 goals…

  22. ORR the only reason Hollweg, Betts, Orr and others have jobs is because of the cap. Otherwise Cullen would be the 4th line center.

  23. Doodie Machetto on

Would anyone trade a prospect if it meant they could dump Malik with him? Like Dawes, Immonen, or Baranka and Malik?

  24. Obviously, we need Orr. Look at what the Pens did at the deadline to pick up Larouque. Clowns like Eager and Witt will think twice about running Prucha, Straka et al. I think Hollweg is a keeper if he cleans up his act and cuts down on the momemntum killing boarding penalties. If Hollweg can contribute 2-3 shifts of smart energy then great. Regarding a replacement for Maloney, as much as we all love the Messier and Graves, it would be great to get a guy from the outside who could bring in another perspective. It won’t happen, but a junior guy from Nashville (a franchise that has alot issues now) has accumulated good young talent in the system.

  25. ORR – Hollweg is already signed for next season, as is Orr. Ortmeyer, however, is not. And because I’ve heard NOTHING about him other than this BS contract bonus morass, I have to assume he ain’t comming back. And if there’s a FA signing, I could almost guarentee this. There’s too many young guys bucking for a chance in the majors.

“The Messiah” – No, I don’t agree with you. If Mess wants a job, then he should buy a one-way ticket to Hartford. Some time in the AHL might give him a nice slice of humble pie. He needs it after last year’s lovefest and that Toronto article that stated outwardly that he’d be the next GM. Work for it Mess, one day it will be yours. Until then, teach Jessiman how to play hockey. Same thing with Leetch, same thing with Graves. They could all contribute down there.

Frankly, I think Shoenfield would be the best bet for AGM because he already knows what’s in Hartford, the kids that are improving and the kids that need to be shipped before the rest of the league knows they’re not worth a bag of pucks.

  26. ORR Kicks Ying Yang on

    TDCHI

I already know Hollweg and Orr signed for the next 2 years.

But why do we need a waste of space like Hollweg when Cally and Pru are hitting more feroicious then him…Also Ortmeyer is hitting more then Hollweg…I want Orr because we need him…Hes an enforcer who is getting better…He’s gotten alot better since Rangers brought him in…Hes a dominant fighter…and a smart one…

Hollweg hits and fights and doesnt score….But Like i said before…Cally..Pru..Ortmeyer all hit…and hit cleaner…Orr fights…Everyone else scores…Need i remind you his only goal of the season was a 2 on 0 with hall of famer like Jagr..Not that hard to score on that one…

I dont hate the guy…But hes flat out a waste of space…Everything he does someone does a little better…

I mean jeez…Prucha through a hit at a tough guy like Mair…I sware to god i thought mair was dead…it was in game 6..Im pretty sure you all noticed it.

As for Hollweg…I remember when last season he boarded a flyer and busted him open…and took a 4 minute or 5 minute penalty….and flyers scored 2 pp goals…that was the game jagr scored the hat trick i believe…Anyway….at that point i was dispointed with him and after that he did it a few other times…but that was the first of many if i recall.

Hollweg did another good thing this year as well….In pre season against the devils…Grant Marshall boarded one of our farm boys…and hollweg kicked his ass…But hollweg isnt that great of a fighter…he has heart…and last year i thought he was great to have…but you compare him to Ortmeyer…they both hit…ortmeyer is a little more offensive…Ortmeyer kills penalties…Ortmeyer has more heart…I dont wanna make a big deal outta nothing but…anyone who says they’d rather have Hollywood then Orts…I gotta say your outta you mind…No offense but theres no way i can be convinced Hollweg is worth keeping around.

  27. ” Look at what the Pens did at the deadline to pick up Larouque.”

lost in the 1st round in 5 games, Laraque sure intimidated those Senators.

“Obviously, we need Orr. Clowns like Eager and Witt will think twice about running Prucha, Straka et al.”

no they won’t, only way they think twice is if they imagine Hollweg concussing one of their scorers.

“Would anyone trade a prospect if it meant they could dump Malik with him?”

obviously, as long as it is a marginal prospect.

  28. “Let’s get Mess, Leetchie, Graves and Richter working for the Rangers in management. They are true Rangers.”

This school of thought scares me….let’s not live in 1994. Those guys were great hockey players, that doesn’t mean that they will be good managment. I’d rather have a competitive team before a nostalgic front office giving fans more reason to hang on to ’94 when we should be focused on the next one. (And winning it without having to bring in half of an existing dynasty)

That said, Doodie, I have to strongly disagree with your comment on how “We are just one or two players” away from being cup favorites. Watching teams like Detroit, Ottawa, and Anaheim reminded what it takes to deep. We are really a ways off from that caliber of play, this team has a lot of holes and a #2 C and #1 D are not enough to make it past an animal squad like the two teams in the 07 finals. Especially when you consider the clock is ticking on our current top guys.

Speaking of which, this team needs to do everything possible to aquire Joe Thornton next summer, IMO.

  29. Ortmeyer is a better player, but also is 5 years older and is not as good or as devastating a hitter as Hollweg. Hollweg should play about 45 games a season and is a good choice to have as an extra forward on the roster.

Orr on the other hand is a useless goon who is adored by the coaching staff, they even played him in the playoffs, which altimately contributed to their exit in 2nd round because they failed to have 4 good lines going.

  30. Is Messier a patient man?
Is Messier the type of man who would sacrifice youth for a run at the Cup?
Is Messier a tolerant man; one who could get along with those who file arbitration; those who make more money then him?

How would Messier handle NY’s adoration of a player? Honestly. How did he handle NY’s embrace of Wayne Gretzsky?

Did Messier, as a 40 year old, yield ice time to develop younger players on the Power play, PK, etc?

(Please don’t respond by saying that these were decisions made by a coach. This is Mark Messier we are talking about)

Does Messier’s win at all costs mentality mean a Cup for NY at the expense of a rebuilding that could mean potential for a Cup, year after year (see NY Devils 1994-2006)

I do not know the answers, but I have questions……

  31. SEAMUS Maloney wasn’t making those decisions, Sather claims he was. So his replacement won’t unless Sather lets them. Sather is not hiring a GM, just an asst GM. Whose job is youth drafting & development.

  32. Jessiman over Getzlaf was the big mistake, which I’ve said countless times and will probably say 80,000 more times over the next 15 years.

Hey Don: Mind sending us that #3 overall pick for Montoya? :)

  33. “Does Messier’s win at all costs mentality mean a Cup for NY at the expense of a rebuilding that could mean potential for a Cup, year after year (see NY Devils 1994-2006)”

Who knew that the Messier-bashing would drop to a new, low level of ‘Well, sure, we won a Cup, but since we didn’t win 3, I’m disappointed.’

  34. Must be late May and everyone needs their Hockey ‘Jones’…

Maloney is gone. Traded his second fiddle in New York for one in the Desert. Can’t change it now, and not sure if it needed to be changed.

While everyone is afraid of not ‘staying the course’, the reality is that the Salary Cap will force Sather, Messier, or whomever, to do just that. In today’s Hockey World you need to spend wisely and that means having a group of young cheap players and spending your big dollars on your top two lines and goalie..

  35. Let’s answer all of Seamus’ questions.

    1) Is Messier a patient man? No, he isn’t. After all, it took him only two years to win a Cup after Gretzky left Edmonton, and it took him only three years to win a Cup when he came here. Not a patient man at all.

    2) Is Messier the type of man who would sacrifice youth for a run at the Cup? Yes, he is. If you took a poll, so too would all the NHL GM’s, if they had the right personnel.

    3) Is Messier a tolerant man; one who could get along with those who file arbitration; those who make more money then him? Again, the Messier-bashers want to have their cake and eat it too: claiming that Messier would bring in only the high-priced, big-named players, then suggesting he wouldn’t be able to handle having high-priced, big-named players. Choose an argument and stick with it, guys.

    4) How would Messier handle NY’s adoration of a player? Honestly. How did he handle NY’s embrace of Wayne Gretzsky? I’ll answer the first question with another question. Rangers fans all have adoration for Henrik Lundqvist- are you suggesting that because of this, Messier would ship him out? Or try to trade Jagr? On the second question, not only does it have nothing to do with anything, but NY never came close to embracing Gretzky the same way it did Messier/Leetch/Graves/Richter.

    5) Did Messier, as a 40 year old, yield ice time to develop younger players on the Power play, PK, etc? No, he did not. Again, as we’ve said many times, 2000-2004 was a very unfortunate time for us, and Messier did not help the cause. But as AGM, I can assure you, he won’t get any PP or PK time.

    6) Does Messier’s win at all costs mentality mean a Cup for NY at the expense of a rebuilding that could mean potential for a Cup, year after year (see NY Devils 1994-2006)? See my previous post. This argument made me laugh (especially the ‘NY Devils’ part). We have one Cup in 67 years, he’s the one who was responsible for it, and Seamus is suggesting that ’94 was actually a dark year for the franchise.

  36. “Is Messier a patient man? No, he isn’t. After all, it took him only two years to win a Cup after Gretzky left Edmonton, and it took him only three years to win a Cup when he came here. Not a patient man at all.”

this is not tennis, this is a team sport. Messier didn’t win shit.

in his last 7 seasons he captained teams out of the playoffs. Then he refused to get traded and if not for the lockout he would play at least another disasterous year.

  37. Doodie, I can’t agree that we’re just a couple players away from being the Cup favorite. I think that’s a gross overstatement. Some defensemen, at least one center, probably a better goon, and some role players/4th liners who may not be fan favorites, but are actually more than one dimensional (and mediocre at that). Oh, and what’s with our back-up goalie situation? Valiquette looked awful, the tiny bit we saw. Is Weekes gonna stick around?

As for the AGM job, Maloney either did or didn’t do some great things and either did or didn’t get enough credit for the Rangers either being good or not good enough. Take that, pundits. Seriously, Sam, any quotes from managers around the league on Don’s skills or influence? Does anyone know anything concrete about what was going on in the Rangers front office the last few years?

  38. Smith’s intuition was right not to re-sign Messier whose production dropped a whopping 24 points while playing 11 games more.

  39. Chris, Weekes is gone, and his salary comes off the books- both good things. Valiquette will be a capable backup at a fraction of the cost.

  40. Also, Chris, Doodie is right (about being Cup contenders, anyway). Yes, we need a center. But the ‘some defensemen’ claim is weird, since we’ll already have it- Girardi and Tyutin will have their first full year of playing together, and one of the young guns will be replacing Rachunek. There’s no such thing as a ‘better goon’ and by definition, mediocre players are put on the 4th line. Get that second line center, and there’s no reason why we can’t come out of the East next year.

  41. Adam. Z – That’s what I thought about Weekes. And Valiquette may be capable, but it seems that it’s better for a team that wants to be a Cup contender to have a back-up who has shown the ability to be red hot for even a small stretch under pressure. That includes people like Weekes, Bryzgalov (sp?), Gerber, etc. I’m not sure Vali could be that guy if something — knock on wood — were to happen to Henrik during a run…

  42. That’s a fair point. If Montoya is still with us in October, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a few starts, as showcase for trade bait.

  43. ORR kicks Ying Yang on

Yeah…Its to bad NYR didnt get Getzlaf…

The guy has one hell of a back hand…

But then again who knows…Its not like NYR is putting all there prospects in the NHL..

Last year we put in Immonen and Giroux and thats about it pretty much…This year we put a few more in

Dawes..Callahan..Dubinsky..If Ortmeyer doesnt come back…and im hoping he does…but if not then dubi would be a good replacement

  44. “Valiquette will be a capable backup”

only if they start playing with a beach ball instead of a puck

  45. Adam, it seems to me you’re putting a lot of faith in the youth to come through, and I mean players to be named later, not Girardi or Tyutin. That seems like a gamble, at best, and certainly not something that would make us guaranteed Cup contenders. And I think Orr isn’t enough of a fighter or a player. Like Orts and Hollweg, he’s just too average at what his role should be. As for 4th liners, not to be repetitive, they should be at least very good at their roles, not just sort of good (Hollweg) and popular.

  46. Doodie Machetto on

To those who think we aren’t two players away: We are.

I’d put our forwards (with a FA #2C) against Ottawa’s and Anaheim’s anyday.

Henrik is much better than both Giguere and Emery.

Ottawa has a deep blue line and Anaheim has two Studs. If we could add one stud, we would have a combination of both.

    Two players.

  47. Doodie,

I hope you’re right — and that we get those players.

    Is it October yet?

    Let’s go Rangers!

  48. “Henrik is much better than both Giguere and Emery.”

    nope

“To those who think we aren’t two players away: We are.”

yeah Gretzky and Bobby Orr in their prime

  49. True Fans bleed RW&B on

I think the Rangers are 2 solid defensman, a solid top 2 center, and a top 2 winger away from being a real threat.

That’s 4 players, unless Girardi can really step it up, and maybe even Callahan….but that’s still leaving alot in the air (and on the shoulders of two young near-rookies) and also 2 open spots for FA’s.

Alot of work needs to be done.

  50. Chris, Orts is by no means a scorer, but he is well-above average as a PK man and a shot-blocker. He can play on my 4th line anytime.

  51. I think to be a contender you need to at least have a good coach, not a retard that thinks he is a good coach.

  52. Doodie Machetto on

““Henrik is much better than both Giguere and Emery.â€?

    nope

You’re kidding right? Emery isn’t even that good of a goaltender, and Giguere isn’t even in the top 5 in the west! you must be the first person I’ve ever met that doesn’t think Henrik is in AT LEAST the top 5 goaltenders in the league.

How many Vezina nominations do Emery and Giguere have combined? How many does Lundqvist have in his first two seasons? Right.

“That’s 4 players, unless Girardi can really step it up, and maybe even Callahan….but that’s still leaving alot in the air (and on the shoulders of two young near-rookies) and also 2 open spots for FA’s”

The Ducks are riding on Getzlaf, Penner, and Perry like that. Pronger is their FA. Why not us?

  53. Doodie Machetto on

Adam Z., I understand where you’re coming from with Orts, but the thing is, can only tolerate one good PK, shot blocking type. That’s why I think Betts is worth keeping and Ortmeyer can go, because Betts has, at times, shown that he has an offensive trick or two up his sleeve. Most importantly, he is good in the circle.

  54. Messier today on Mike and the Mad Dog said he is not ready to take the job vacated by Maloney, if I heard him correctly. I think that’s a big relief for many of you. I’m fairly indifferent because I don’t know how he will do, but I think asst. GM is a good starting point.

BTW, pork anus is Yenner Mot, right?

  55. I don’t know, Doodie, I think there’s room for two. If one of them goes in the box, or if injuries inevitably pop up, you have the other to take the lead on a PK- for either a game or a series of games.

Orts has a nose for the net…he just hasn’t been able to finish. But since it’s not for a lack of chances, I think resigning him isn’t a bad idea- perhaps with some more work, we can get more out of him offensively than what we’ve seen.

  56. Keep a thought for Dave Balon and his family. He passed away yesterday from MS after a 30 year battle with that disease. Was a Ranger in late 60’s early 70’s and in an earlier stint in the early 60’s. Info is on Ranger website.

Brandon – yes he was Yenner Mot (renney backwards) as well as several other names including Vinny Pooh.

  57. pork anus-I know i will get some smart ass answer from you ,but i have to ask. Why pork anus? You have used alot of strange names but this one has to be the strangest. Now you do realize your calling yourself a pigs asshole, why? Why would you want to do that? I just have to ask.

  58. Barbara
I can answer that. Pork Anus was given that name by his parents after they originally named him Clark Gillies.

  59. Damn, now Messy’s probably going to get Sather’s job. It would be yet another publicity stunt by him. Maybe Richter or even LEETCH will take over?!?!? C’mon, that would be AMAZING IF LEETCH TOOK OVER!! =]

Does anyone have news on how Kasper is doing??

  60. NYRCUP07 – Now that was funny. I always hated Gilles.
It’s really difficult to say if the Rangers are actually only two players away. On the one hand, if they’d had a true second line center who could score and set up Shanny, maybe half of those 21- one goal losses go their way, they get a better seed, and carry more momentum into the playoffs. On the other hand, it isn’t always how good a team you are but how well you’re playing, and the Rangers were playing far better than just about anybody this year. I truly believe they should have beaten the Sabres, but I doubt that this year’s team would have gotten by Ottawa. Maybe next year the Rangers add those players and are a better team, but maybe they won’t be playing better.

In short, I guess we can say that this year’s team was a player or two away, and I’d say that despite their second round exit, they left as the second best team in the East. But whether or not adding the right two guys means that they’ll be playing better next year at this time is anybody’s guess. I’d venture to say yes.

  61. “pork anus-I know i will get some smart ass answer from you ,but i have to ask. Why pork anus? You have used alot of strange names but this one has to be the strangest. Now you do realize your calling yourself a pigs asshole, why? Why would you want to do that? I just have to ask.”

maybe because I have a sense of humor, not some stuck up bitch

  62. pig ass-You call me a stuck up bitch because i asked you why you call yourself pork anus. That shows you have no sense of humor.

  63. Adam,

I mean no insult to you at all, but your response shows more of Messier worship, like a teenager, than an analytical view of his potential.

I am a very big Messier fan, for the record. I raised questions because being a player is very different than front office, or even coaching. I think Messier treated young players well (remember the suit purchasing), but I do not know if this translates into front office work, with all the politics it takes.

He bolted NY after playing with Gretzsky. It was a weird time. I’m no fan of Glen Sather….he has screwed up the team for years, and suddenly, with the emergence of Lundqvst, he looks like a genius? His fire sale a few years back and the youth movement seemed promising, but we did not really give opportunites to youth. His one trade deadline deal this year was his best…..but for all the vets we gave up on a few years ago, how many kids have played for us?

We also have a terrible defense. The numbers look good because of Lundqvst. Just imagine how good Lundqvst would be with the devil’s defense! He overpaid for Malik and Rachunek, who may not truly be NHL caliber players, but at their salaries, what do we do?

I love Messier and his leadership reputation is unquestioned. I just don’t know WHO exactly calls the shots in New York, and I don’t think any of us do.

    I suspect: Dolan.

This is based upon a pyschological profile taken ONLY from media reports (especially Sports Ilustrated) as well as his own disclosures of substance abuse/etc. He fits the profile of a narcissist with poly/substance abuse issues. Add millions of dollars and you have a nut who makes employees listen to him sing. Really strange.

That type of person does not allow others to rule over him. Is Sather a puppet? Why did JD, a lifelong Ranger, bolt? NY is NOT drawing people to the Garden. Why did Maloney leave?

Here is the most pressing of the points: We ALL heard the MSG announcers SHILL for the Garden. It wasn’t “fan talk” as some have; it was downright disgusting. Like Trautwig saying, “I don’t understand why the fans boo Malik”. He understands that 16,000 people all see what they see. He knows who signs his paychecks. Joe M on a rare occassion, did express a contrary opinion……………it was really disgusting.

so, I raised questions but am not a Messier basher. If he is a mercenery, truly at heart, let him take it elsewhere. His love of NY wasn’t so great after ’97. He has a history of breaking up with us

  64. I, for one, am sad that the Maloney era has come to end at MSG. was bad enough when we lost one brother, now we’re down two.
