On second thought…

You know what they say, never trust what you read in a Swedish newspaper. Actually, I don’t know if anyone says that. But I guess I’m saying it now, because according to Henrik Lundqvist’s agent Don Meehan, the two sides haven’t even spoken about a new contract for the goalie, let alone agree to terms.

“I would assume that we will once the season is over,” Meehan said. “But I haven’t even talked to the Rangers.”

Of course, seeing how Meehan was at Game 5 last week in Buffalo, the definiton of “not talking” is open for interpretation. But right now, Meehan is saying there is no truth to the report posted below.

Hey, I’ve seen Carpie in person and know that he should NOT be going anywhere near Hubba’s.

  2. Well yeah, I should know the Swedes (being that I’m a Finn myself). They are what they are — excluding Henke and Nylander of course.

Anyway, the Aftonbladet is a tabloid, Scandinavia’s version of the NY Post really. They keep tabs on the Swedish players 24/7.

But seeing how huge a part Lundqvist has played for this team, I wouldn’t personally be the least surprised if they locked him to a deal similar mentioned in the article.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but to my understading Lundqvist would be eligible to file for UFA when he is 27 – which is in 2 years – and assuming he keeps playing this good, he could easily ask for a $6-7 million contract as a 27-year old Vezina candidate/possible winner in the next 2 years. So if the Rangers could lock him up for 7 years at that price then it should be done immediately IMO

  3. I know this is really premature, but along with Drury and Gomez we should add the name Lecavalier. It seems he’s been on the block for a long time and rather then signing someone, I’m positive we could deal some young chips for him. Imagine that second line of Callahan, Lecavalier and Shanahan (if he stays). Wow!

  4. I’m betting Shanny’s gone. He just hasn’t looked the same since that concussion, goals or not. Sad as it is, better to leave the game when you can still think.

  5. I believe the 2 sides haven’t spoken yet, but I can also believe the Rangers are preparing an offer similar to that. At $4.5 million per, that would be a bargain. It’s basically DP money, but 8 less years!

I’m sure it’s backloaded too, so more money hits at the end when the salary cap is higher.

  6. I really wouldn’t take what Hank’s agent says to be entirely true. Agents always stay clear of telling the public anything about contract extensions until the deal is 100% completed and official.

They will undoubtedly lock Henrik up at some point.

  7. Brendan Shanahan talking about playing again for the Rangers

“I’ll talk it over with my family, and also not just the option of where, but if,” Shanahan said.

Oh man Shanny don´t talk about that with the wife, it doesn´t end up like that is best for you :)

  8. Again

The average salary is used as the cap hit

It doesn’t matter if Lundqvist gets $2 million in 07-08 and $8 million in the last season of the contract, the average salary is the yearly cap hit

  9. koala where did you read that? that’s not what he said after the game.

  10. Anthony (the other one) on

I don’t know how everyone can say that Shanny looked a step slow by the end of the year. He came back from a concussion and a month off, and still put four or five pucks in the net during the playoffs.

If he would be willing to come back, I’d welcome him with open arms. He and Jags work well together, he’s hockey-smart AND PR-smart. Good man, hard worker, clutch performer.

    What’s not to like?

  11. Doodie Machetto on

Nick, Lecavalier has a no-trade clause. Furthermore, Tampa Bay GM Jay Feaster has repeatedly said all season that he is not going to trade any of his big four (Lecavalier, St. Louis, Richards, and Boyle). This goes double for Lecavalier, because he does not want to be remembered as the guy who traded Lecavalier, especially in the wakes of the Heatley and Thornton trades. Furthermore, why would you trade the best center in the league as he is entering his prime? I’d love to have him but forget it, it ain’t happening.

NJMark: Backloading doesn’t do anything for cap purposes. Your cap number is based on the avg. per year value of your entire contract. What it helps for is profits. This is because the amount of money a team makes goes up every year in terms of overall dollars (ie, raising tickets/concessions/merch prices), and therefore, there are more overall dollars lying around to pay people with.

  12. nick–lecavalier is NOT available, just because teams want him and talk about him doesn’t mean he’s available.

  13. bklynblue…that statement was in a story from Josh today in the journalnews…!!!

  14. Lecavalier stated in the past he really liked it down there and he doesn´t want to leave. I don´t think he will come to the Rangers. The only team he would may think to play for other than the Lightning are his home town the Montreal Canadiens.

  15. JOSH Shanny said he wants to come back to NY if they want him, and that all the pieces are in place.

  16. Doodie Machetto on

What’s not to like? How about that Shanahan was on the ice for 8 of the 17 goals that Buffalo scored in the series. He was a defensive liability because Buffalo could leave his old legs in the dust.

How about also that he is robbing a talented young forward of valuable ice time. Remember the Avery-Cullen-Callahan line that worked so well together, but was then broken up because big bad Brendan had to get on the 2nd line and not score for 7 games and have only one goal for the last 9 games of the season.

Then remember there is also Petr Prucha and Nigel Dawes, both of whom got the ice time shaft because of the spot Shanny takes up on a top line.

You want Shanny’s intangibles? Bring him back as an assistant coach or something. Don’t rob a kid of ice time and the team of 4 million in cap space.

  17. Doodie Machetto on

BTW guys, if Nylander played in the regular season like he did in the playoffs, he would be one of the elite centers in the league. I would rank him in the top five if he could do that. The others are Lecavalier, Crosby, Thornton, and Jokinen.

I’m sure some may disagree with Jokinen while there were other good choices out there, but Jokinen did about the same with much, much, MUCH less help than the others.

  18. Doodie, you are too tough on Brendan.

Most of those goals were scored in the first and sixth game, when the Rangers didn´t play their defensive game not having too many forwards backchecking. And it wasn´t only Shanahan. I would admit that he wasn´t at his best but I think it was the fact that he suffered his concussion…

He is still a very important part in the Rangers` locker room when a lot of players spoke about what he said after this terrible loss on Friday night…

I would really like to have him back for next season..

  19. Canada beat U.S. 6-3, Russia beat Sweden 4-2 at the world champhionships in Moscow…

Matthew Lombardi had a hattrick for the Canadiens and Mike Cammalieri scored twice as they scored four unanswered goals in the first period…!!!!

“I’m betting Shanny’s gone. He just hasn’t looked the same since that concussion, goals or not. Sad as it is, better to leave the game when you can still think.”

they asked Gordie Howe why he wore a cup but not a helmet. and he said “I can always get someone to do my thinking for me” :)

  21. Doodie was he out there all alone ? Who were the other guys? Was he the highest and who was above or below him, or do you just want to talk about Shanny in a vacumn?

  22. My heart wants Shanny back, we were really lucky to have him play in NY and play as well as he did. The guy still gets the puckk off his stick and on net faster just as fast as anyone.

My brain knows it’s probably not for the better to keep him though, unless he’s willing to take a big dip in icetime and salary….

I have a feeling he will be back…it sounds like he tasted the cup again this year, and I think he is impressed in how the team was able to turn it around in the last quarter and make a legitimate run. He wants another go with these boys, I think they’ll have him back….let’s just hope he is used in a certain role and can embrace that.

  23. Salty, can you tell me if I can listen to Sam on the internet when he is wrapping up the season of the Rangers ???

Obviously he doesn´t want to give me the link, because he didn´t like my bad posts earlier in the season in October and November (:(:(:

  24. Thanks for the clarification on the salary cap guys. Either way, $4.5 million would still be excellent value for a top 5 goalie, maybe top 3.

I am 99.9% sure that Tampa Bay will not part with Lecavalier. Even if they do trade one of their big 4, I doubt Lecavalier would be the one they deal. He is WAY better than the other 3, so I think they’d look to move someone else if they choose to. They’d be fools to trade Lecavalier.

  25. Doodie Machetto on

Bklynblue: No, Shanahan wasn’t on the ice alone, but the fact is, he was there, and it wasn’t always the same people out there with him. Shanahan was the common denominator.

Koala, you’re right, most of those goals came in games one and six, when the pace of the game was run and gun. Shanahan couldn’t keep up at the run and gun pace and was burned, a lot.

PS, the internet feed usually goes up after the TV broadcast, so you’ll have to wait.

All i have to say is…

    I WANT SHANNY BACK….Enough said

He was a solid foward for us this year….He scored massive goals earlier in the year…Nearly every game…He slowed down only because the D got more tight on him.

Yea..He was on ice for a few goals this year…But he played penaly kill and sometimes he got the unlucky breaks…

Look how we ended the year….I say We start with the same roster…BUT we find a 2nd line Cener for shanny…We should have the room..With the contracts of Ozolinsh and Weekes gone..and perhaps Rachunek….

We need a shooting D man…I like Rozi and i want him part of the team…But i also want a D man that WILL shoot the puck..Thats why i wanted Pronger so much in the off season…But theres no way Souray will come here…Like i said yesterday…i think the devils will let Rafalski go…Maybe we should try and get him

Also…for those of you saying “I Want Drury”…Drop it as fast as you can…Cause that sure as sh*t aint happening…If anything They either re sign both or dump Briere….Briere takes massive penalties and Drury is the kinda guy they need around…Hes more of a leader then Briere to me personally…They even have to deal with Zubrus’ contract.

Either way…Im looking foward to who gets signed..re signed..and traded

  27. I hope Dawes gets traded. he is too much of a defensive liability, too small, too much a onetrick pony, not a gritty corner working board worker back checking classic winger.

I would rather have a kid like Dustin Brown of LA, who hits and scores.

  28. doodie #s for the others? W/o Shanny this team would not have gotten its’ act together. He got Renney & Jagr to smell the coffee and lead this team the way a veteran should. No he’s not perfect , but I’ll take 10 guys like him.

“Also, anyone else get the feeling Prucha is a goner?”

    yes

” would rather have a kid like Dustin Brown of LA, who hits and scores.”

    obviously

“We need a shooting D man”

our D WILL shoot…if Jagr gives them permission.

  31. Doodie Machetto on

bklynblue, Avery was out there for every even strength one that Shanahan was, with the exception of the empty netter in game one. But it only takes one forward to get burned for the whole line to get scored upon.

Look, I’m not Shanahan isn’t a great guy, a future hall of famer, and a class act, I’m just saying that he isn’t worth a top 6 lineup spot. If he wants third or fourth line time, that’s fine by me. But he better take third or fourth line dollars. I’d love to see an Avery-Cullen-Shanahan third line next season. But we know that’s not happening.

Also, for all of you who think that Buffalo is going to pick Drury over Briere should they have to choose one, it’s Briere they would choose. I’ve been keeping an eye on that situation all season (because I had really wanted them to get one for our second line center next season), and Briere is definitely the guy they want to be the face of the franchise.

Personally, I don’t want either of them anymore. I’d rather play Dubinsky or get Scott Gomez. Dubinsky for a patient rebuild, Gomez for a cup run.

    Straka-Nylander-Jagr
    Prucha-Gomez-Callahan
    Avery-Cullen-Shanahan
    Hossa-Betts-Ortmeyer

    Rozsival-Staal
    Tyutin-Girardi
    Mara-Pock

Rolling three lines with every other 7th shift going to the fourth line. Keeping Hossa in the lineup also helps create other looks if you need to shuffle lines late in a game. That would be ideal for me. That lineup can win a cup with the King in net, Montoya as backup and possibly dealt at the deadline for some veteran depth.

  32. Doodie Machetto on

Correction, every 7th shift, not every other. That would be every 14th shift.

  33. Yenner Mot on

I don’t want Shanahan back in any shape or form as a player, he looks done to me.

we need to move forward and develop our prospects.

  34. Shanny did a hell of a lot more coming back from a serious head injury than Straka did in the last month.

get rid of Straka if a vet has to go. he is not physical, not nearly the leader Shanny is, and too tied in to the czech favoritism.

don’t give me the straka injury bs, because Shanny had a much worse injury.

  35. Doodie Machetto on

Shanahan did not have a worse injury. Straka had a bum shoulder AND a torn bicep, injuries that affect your play every game. He’s probably going to get surgery during the offseason. Shanahan had a concussion. So have I. Once the symptoms stop, you’re right as rain.

  36. Beukeboom and Richter wish that all they had had was a torn bicep, they could have continued their careers. but not from a concussion, which you try to claim is just a temporary blip, when most knowledgeable fans know that it is a potential recurring problem that has sent many players out of the game for good.

to say that a bum shoulder is worse is just ridiculous.

  37. Doodie Machetto on

jd, that would be post-concussion syndrome. If Shanahan had that, he would be retired as well. Those are the symptoms I was referring to. Once you stop having them, you are right as rain. You are more likely to get concussions after having one, but once the symptoms are gone, your functioning is 100% normal. I’ve actually had two (one from hockey, one from judo).

This just shows you know nothing about concussions. Richter, Beuk, Keith Primeau: these guys have post-concussion syndrome. Shanahan does not have that. Therefore, he has nothing to worry about beyond getting another concussion. His actual performance and functionality, however, are fine, unless he plays afraid of getting another concussion, in which case, I don’t want him.

Tim Connolly had a couple of concussions and he is just getting better and better for the Sabres as he gets more and more into game shape.

Steve Young for the San Francisco 49ers had something like 5 concussions and played well after coming back from each one. However, if he had suffered post-concussion syndrome after any of them, he’d be playing golf with Richter and Beuk.

  38. Doodie Machetto on

You say it yourself: potential recurring problem. POTENTIAL. NO ACTUAL EFFECT. aka the opposite of the injuries Straka had.

  39. if you put it to a vote of Ranger players including those at hartford, between Shanny and straka, the vast majority would pick Shanny, except for the czech clique.

  40. Doodie Machetto on

congratulations, Shanahan is popular. I didn’t realize you pick your hockey team by popularity. That’s what we did when Messier was around and look wher eit got us. I go by results. Shanahan can’t bring them the way I want them.

Rod Gilbert is a Hall of Famer, why not get him suited up. I’m sure all of the players really like him too.

Sorry to crash on your man love parade for him, but the guy isn’t good enough to play on our second line.

  41. “Messier was around and look where it got us.”

just a Stanley Cup, that’s all.

  42. Doodie Machetto on

jd, I was referring to the second time around, but thanks for playing.

  43. Sam- Why care about our newspapers? Have you seen the chicks over here?

Seriously, AB is like the Post.

Though, they print what someone tells them, when they say a “high source” in the NYR org its Rocker or Maloney, with my bet on Don. He have figured in that paper before. Rockström is too careful.

Though they won’t make up a source completly.

Not suprised that it isn’t comming from Meehan, its a good deal for the NYR.
