Lundqvist a finalist for the Vezina

27

If only the last part of the season counted, I’d say the King might be a lock (he was 16-4-5 record, with a 1.72 GAA and .936 save percentage in 27 games). But Lundqvist most likely will lose out to Luongo or Brodeur.

The goalie was the only Ranger included among the finalists for the end of season awards, all of which were announced today. You may recall an earlier post when I listed “my votes”:http://rangers.lohudblogs.com/2007/04/14/some-morning-thoughts/. Writers do not vote for either the Vezina, the Lester Pearson or the Jack Adams, although as John Dellapina of the Daily News can attest, I certainly tried.

Meanwhile, here are the finalists. The winners will be announced June 14.

*CALDER MEMORIAL TROPHY (outstanding rookie):* Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins; Jordan Staal, Pittsburgh Penguins; Paul Stastny, Colorado Avalanche.

*FRANK J. SELKE TROPHY (outstanding defensive forward):* Rod Brind’Amour, Carolina Hurricanes; Samuel Pahlsson, Anaheim Ducks; Jay Pandolfo, New Jersey Devils.

*HART MEMORIAL TROPHY (most valuable player to his team):* Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils; Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins; Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks.

*JACK ADAMS AWARD (outstanding coach):* Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres; Michel Therrien, Pittsburgh Penguins; Alain Vigneault, Vancouver Canucks.

*JAMES NORRIS MEMORIAL TROPHY (outstanding defenseman):* Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings; Scott Niedermayer, Anaheim Ducks; Chris Pronger, Anaheim Ducks.

*LADY BYNG MEMORIAL TROPHY (sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct):* Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings; Joe Sakic, Colorado Avalanche; Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning.

*LESTER B. PEARSON AWARD (most outstanding player as voted by fellow members of the NHLPA):* Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins; Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay Lightning; Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks.

*VEZINA TROPHY (outstanding goaltender):* Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils; Miikka Kiprusoff, Calgary Flames; Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers; Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks.

  1. Good for him, I hope he wins it- we all know he deserves it.

Hey has anyone seen the article on NHL.com about Ruff instructing the Sabres to stop trying to play ‘pretty’ and to instead make what he calls ‘ugly’ plays to score ‘ugly’ goals? The article goes deeper into this to explain how he wants his players to do such things as battle in the corners and in front of the net, among other things, rather than the end to end passing game that Buffalo has relied so heavily on all year long.

To me, this is a good sign, if only because this shows that the Sabres are scared. They finally see our boys as a formidable opponent, and are trying to adapt to their play, which in my opinion, will not work. The Sabres are simply not that kind of hockey team, and I’m hoping that this attempt to change their game will only throw them off all the more.

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

Staal over Kopitar, that is BS.

why Nylander is not nominated for Byng?

  3. Why wasn’t Avery a Lady Byng finalist? LOL.
I hope HENRIK WINS, but He won’t, but there is a more important piece of hardware We are after.

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I love Henrik, but let’s be honest, he didn’t have a full year of quality goaltending. Maybe his defense sucked, but still his first half was no way a Vezina quality year. Second half? Insane.

And, man, has the Norris Trophy voting gotten boring. Deserved or not.

BTW, I think Girardi was the best rookie in NHL, in fact I think he is in top 10 best among all defensemen in terms of defense.

“And, man, has the Norris Trophy voting gotten boring. Deserved or not.”

yeah, I was thinking the same thing

  7. The King can thank his teamates when he loses for playing .500 for the first half.

  8. The way these awards were established make no sense IMHO.

Why is there an award for best defenseman, best defensive forward, best Rookie, but no award for best offensive forward or best defensive rookie?
Girardi would definitley take that last honor-

  9. NHL needs to add two more :Michael Rozsival for the NORRIS Trophy and Tom Renney for the Jack Adams Award, oh and not to forget Shanahan for the Lady Byng Memorial Award. P.S. : Rangers Calder Trophy Winner tie: Callahan & Girardi

  10. I’m amazed they even acknowleged Lundqvist. I’m happy about it but unfortunately I don’t see him having even a small chance. Hopefully he’ll have more luck in the future.

3 hours till the doors open! I’m scared and excited at the same time.

    Go Rangers!

  11. Two of the Three Hart finalists are goalies. Has that ever happened before?

  12. Girardi kicks ass, but he’s only played in thirty something games…

    LET’S GO RANGERS!!!!!

  13. Jeff L,

I agree with you 100%. I read the same article before on NHL.com and thought the same thing. Teams don’t usually change their style of play on May 1st. November 1st is more like it.

What the Rangers need tonight is a nice 3-0 game (in their favor, of course). They need a convincing win to show Buffalo that they are for real and just as good (if not better) than them. They need Buffalo to go back home thinking they may not be the best.

Granted, I’ll take a win anyway we can get one tonight.

    LETS GO RANGERS!!

  14. a casual observer on

Mark and Jeff, good calls. This game is as big as it gets. Let’s pray for some even officiating also.

  15. El Side,
There are 4 Vezina finalists due to a tie in third-place votes, according to NHL.com

  16. NJ Mark, I totally agree. I would also like to see some real pressure on Miller early to get under his skin and mess up his head.

  17. ORR kicks Ying Yang on

LOL wheres Nolan for the Jack Adams…I thought he was a finalist???

    Anybody know anything about that…

  18. I’ll add to my original post: the Rangers also need to win in convincing fashion (i.e. 3-0) to give Henrik some breathing room and take a little pressure off. There hasn’t been one minute in this series where we lead by 2 or more goals.

You’re right Jay. A goal early (see: Game 3 vs. Atlanta) would be great. I also wouldn’t mind seeing Avery rattle Buffalo a little early on to throw them off of their game, if possible.

  19. Waiiit…so this makes Henke a Vezina candidate in his first 2 NHL years? (or was he rookie nom’d last year?)

Not BAD either way…. obv no chance at taking it, but NOT BAD to be nominated.

I love that Buffalo is forced to rethink their approach here…they still make me nervous as hell though….NERVOUS AS HELL.

Good comments guys…I agree with alot of what was said above. Hank is the man he will have another shot at this award another year(no big deal) he has his eyes on a different prize right now// the count down to game time beginsssss…. Let’s Go Rangers Baby!!!

  21. vezina is voted on by the 30 nhl gms. they vote on who they feel is the best goaltender or goaltenders in the game. just because henke had a bad october doesnt mean anything in those terms. he’s been phenomenal and i think the 4 nominees were exactly as they should be
