This is hockey

Apparently we’ve come a long way from the doldrums of November, back when maybe five beat reporters and a single camera crew would be on hand for pre-game sessions at the Garden.

Now the entire press room is overloaded with new tables and chairs to accomodate the excess media, while the eating area has been shifted to a new location downstairs.

I don’t care if this means me taking an elbow to the midsection to get a quote from the likes of Jagr and Shanahan. It’s good to see the rest of the world has caught on to the charms of hockey. Now if only there was this much interest in my exploits in late night beer leagues…

Meanwhile, some updates:

  • Tom Renney continued to say his plan was to skate a few extra players — i.e. Brad Isbister and Ryan Hollweg — in warm-ups and then make a decision from there. His inclination was to skate the same players as the first two games, if only because he doesn’t want to disrupt what’s been working. But depending on what he sees from the Thrashers, he could change his mind.
  • That said, keep an eye on the third- and fourth-lines tonight, if only to see if Renney flip-flops Jed Ortmeyer and Ryan Callahan. It’s not a move I love but it may have something to do with Ortmeyer providing a defensive anchor to the more free-wheeling Matt Cullen and Petr Prucha. But Callahan certainly has a more potent scoring touch, and just by keeping the puck deep in the offensive zone, he can keep the Thrashers away from the Rangers’ net.

As for Prucha, the left wing in some fans’ eyes has been quiet thus far, but not when you consider it was his hustle that set up Michael Nylander’s game-winning goal in Game 1. He’ll continue to be used on the top power play unit.

OK, that’s all for now. The plan is for the intrepid Josh Thomson to blog during the game. But he’s a BU guy, so I’m not sure if he can figure that out.

    More later….

    1. I hope we knock them around, and take any steam that they have right out.

      LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!

what an inconsistent bs artist. if you don’t want to disrupt what has been working , you don’t take Callahan off the Cullen line.

that is why it is total bs that Hollweg is not playing. Renney is more than anxious to tinker and make changes, but when we mention Hollweg, all of a sudden it is ain’t broke don’t fix it bullsheet. Hah, tell that to Callahan.

    3. incidentally, the NBC ratings for Sat. were 1.6 in NY for the Ranger game, and over 13 in Pitt for the Pens game.

you read that right, not 1.3, but 13. I hope the Pens beat the Sens.

    4. So, at this point in the series, which Hossa would you want on the Rangers roster? The one the majority of posters played playerhater against for most of the year (including myself, I take responsibility) or his superstar brother?

    5. nakedjoe, it doesn’t have anything to do with how big the viewing area is. In New York the game only got a 1.6, and in Pitt it got a 13. That means a higher percentage of Pittsburgh housholds watched their game than there counterparts in New York.

    6. and I think that’s pretty sad. It isn’t like they were watching the Knicks, because we all know they suck.

    7. PW…you’re talking about New York….there’s millions of other things going on and on top of that it’s a baseball town. Why don’t you ask people in Pittsburgh if they even know who the Pirates are. Apples and Oranges my friend.

    8. Am I lame because I got goosebumps just now watching the MSG/Rangers opening for the game just now? lol

    9. Re: NBC. Only Georgia, Florida, NYC, Albany, and Utica NBC stations got the Rangers game on Saturday, so the rating should be lower. The way I read your post, however, is that somehow the Pens – Sens got a 13 rating in NY. Could you please clarify, rg?

    10. Whoops, I totally missed the words “in Pitt.” Disregard that last post. And oh yeah, GOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLL!

    11. Doodie Machetto on

Keith Tkachuk was at BU. Josh, you’re on my shitlist by default right now.

      LET’S GO RANGERS!!!!!!!
