The Devs sack Julien

51

The AP reports “the Devils have fired coach Claude Julien.”:http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2822234 GM Lou Lamoriello will take over.

Only in hockey would a winning team fire its coach right before the playoffs. But Lamoriello has done this before, and it led to a Stanley Cup in 2000. We’ll see what happens now. Obviously, this is a major shakeup for one of the Rangers potential playoff opponents.

So would you rather face Atlanta still, or do the Devils look more appetizing?

  1. i would rather verse the thrashers, for some reason the rangers cant get anything by Broduer in the playoffs.

  2. I don’t get the Devils. Julien probably didn’t deserve the Robinson treatment. I am not the same Dave as above.

  3. im sorry, but i just dont understand the move. but on the other hand i’d love to see the devils sink to the ground after this.

  4. I would prefer Atlanta. Lou is a smart old bird.

I’d like to know how that all goes down. Julien did about as well as any coach could do…??

  5. Two options here, right? Julien ticked off Brodeur in some way or Lou trusts himself to win the Cup. Maybe both.

    Still rather face the Thrashers.

  6. This will either wake the Devils up or sink them completely.I’d still rather face Atlanta first. Really anybody but Pittsburgh ,not because we can’t beat them ,but because every time anybody gets in Sidney Crosby’s airspace they’re gonna get a penalty.Hes the leagues golden boy and they want him to win.

  7. Lou knows what he’s doing. As a Ranger fan, that move scares the yellow out of me. That kind of stuff definitely fires up NJD….I felt they were on the verge of tanking and Marty was about to hit a heavy slump after a long season. This will at least fire them up through the first round. yikes

  8. WOuld rather face the Devils… I think we’re ready to beat them.

Atlanta I think is a much tougher opponent with Holik, Tkachuk, Kovalchuk and Hossa.

    Josh:

I think you meant to say that it led to a Stanley Cup in 2000, when the Devils fired then head coach Robbie Ftorek.

When they won the Cup in 2003, Pat Burns had been coaching the team all season long.

  10. Patrick Hoffman…I thought it was earlier than ’03, but that’s what it had said in the story I linked to. As always, the lesson is don’t just believe what other people say is true.

    Anyway, thanks for the catch.

  11. Where's Bure? on

Is this an exceedingly arrogant move by Lamoriello or did Julian piss off the management?
Don’t get me wrong, I hate the Devils and revel in anything that leads to their failure, but this makes about as much sense as drafting Hugh Jessiman as our first overall pick.

  12. lou is shaking & waking up his team for the playoffs. I’m sure he got their attention again, they need to sell Newark to their 666 fans.

  13. He did this Ftorek and they won the cup. ALthough the Devils have begun to look flawed and beatable, they still scare the red and blue out of me come playoff time. Brodeur will become unstoppable again, it’s just a matter of time. Everytime the Rangers play the devs (preseason, reg season, or playoffs) it is like game 7 of the conf finals. On a more selfish note, I would love to play ATL because my dad has already gotten his playoff tickets, so I can go to those games. (i have relocated to Charlotte, NC) I also think that ATL is flawed more so than NJ. Can’t wait!

Renney wouldn’t even have lasted a third of the season.

  15. as “flawed and beatable” as you think NJ may look, you are insane if you think they wouldn’t rise up for the opportunity to pound NYR

Salty Meat- I’m all for respecting opponents, but you sure sound like a Devil Fan Trolling!

Hey……does anyone know the reason for julien being fired…It must be a Neil Smith kinda deal….I can care less but i love controversy…Lets go NYR…and i liked isbister last night…he made some nice plays and that pass to jagr was nice..I like this linup alot..I personally think hollweg should sit..When Hossa comes back..hollweg wasnt there…and guys stepped up to throw big hits like ..cally…and betts…his hit kinda made that leaf player turnover the puck to the ref and then avery scored….AVERY is the MAN…ERRR

  18. Mr Potato Head on

even as a NYR fan, this move kind of irks me. If this is becoming his MO, why would coaches want to coach there? So they could win the division and get fired?

Hopefully, Lou steps behind the bench and they go packing after the first round.

  19. I would only want to face ATL or if we happen to get seventh I would hope for PITT to grab the division and have the Rangers play PITT in Rd 1. This way Avery can send Crosby packing in Rd 1.

  20. It might not make sense, but lets look at it from Lou’s position. The GMs have less work to do between the Trade deadline and the end of the playoffs. No trading, no free agents, little signing going on. Lou did a great job turning around his team last season. They were on a rampage at the end of last season and through the 1st round of the playoffs. So, I don’t see this as a huge mistake for them.

  21. Malik's laser guided poke check on

Satherloney needs to respond by demoting Renney or totally firing him and instead hire Claude Julien

  22. Before this i wanted the devs, now not so much. Atlanta has bigtime size and skill, pretty much a toss up. Definately a curious move on Lou’s part, what kind of coach will want to accept a position with them in future?

  23. I warned Claude that it was not a good idea to be banging Marty’s wife, but he wouldn’t listen to me.

  24. Steve Rucchin on

I’d rather play Atlanta than the Devils in the 1st round but we have shown that (sometimes) we can be competitive with the Devils.

That being said, it doesn’t matter who we face, because at one point in time in the playoffs you will play a team you have to beat, know what I mean? If it’s not Jersey in the 1st round, it’s them in the 2nd or 3rd.

  25. Personally, I dont give a ****, We have to win, no matter what or who is on the other team or behind their bench. I don’t care as long as THE NEW YORK RANGERS WIN. That is all I care about, I dont care if Christie Brinkley coaches the Fishies or Lamoriello’s dog coaches the Devs, as long as WE WIN!

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!

    get real dude.

Just saying, I fear Jersey the most of ant team in the first round. Last year was a really really tough one to swallow. Not that I don’t think we could play them well, but man, I’d REALLY rather not go against the dirty devs first.

  27. Julien did a great job with limited resources and this is what he gets from the Devils. This speaks volumes about how they treat people from the outside. Either you’re a born Devil or you’re nobody. Really represents a new low in Devils management by dysfunction. However, I would agree I would not want to face the Devils in first round. I’d like to get past Atlanta hopefully and go from there!

  28. ORR kicks Ying Yang on

ERRR….Hopefully Orr and Asham will fight tomorrow..Im waiting for this for 2 years now…I hate asham hes such a wimp…He parades himself as a tough guy but only drops the gloves with people he thinks he can fight…Also i wonder what devil fans think about the coaching situation..I bet they’ll jump on the bandwagon and say he’s a bad coach…I hate the devils……….lets go NYR tomorrow..

  29. if it was up to me i’d never play the devils again. lou OWNS the refs i want nothing to do with them. let someone else deal with them. i’ll take an inexperienced atlanta team in a 7 game series any day of the week.

  30. onecupin67years on

I guess lou has high standards ,at least in his own mind .I doubt if they will win the cup this time .
I think the firing is to wake up the team, to make them feel responsible for the firing letting the poor coach down .If they win then Lou is a F_____G genius.

  31. ORR kicks Ying Yang on

LOL…..did anyone see Colton Orr’s face during the commercial break…When the refs were talking to Avery…he had the big “O” mouth going….lol and joe circling it..i thought i was the only perosn i nthe world that noticed that…I wonder what Orrzie would think when he see’s that…He has to be a little embarrised..You gotta love the big guy though…I gotta tell you i’d rather have him in the playoffs then hollywood…but thats just me….

  32. Man…I don’t understand how you fire a coach who’s guided the team to a second-place finish in a tight and talented east with just three games remaining. I understand “sweet” Lou is a good coach and all, but there must have been some SERIOUS conflicts with Julien and the team. That’s just not a prudent thing to do going into a tough playoff series. I highly doubt this makes the Debbies any MORE competitive. You gotta think, some of these guys haven’t ever dealt with Lamorillo behind the bench.

Frankly, given the Sabres consistently good play dispite nearly half their lineup being injured, I think the Cup is theirs to loose. I can’t see a team in the east beating them out. Miller is too good and the one-two punch of Briere and Drury is lethal. Those guys stay healthy Buffalo makes the finals at least. Sens have an outside chance, as do the Devils(at least until the recent shakeup). Thrash? no way no how. They’ve got Tkachuck, who’s loser in his own right. Pens to young, Lightning have no goaltending and the Canadiens and Rangers are pretty much not solid enough at this point. That’s why I didn’t really understand teams like the Isles and Thrashers moving top prospects to shoot the moon this year.

Hey….did anybody catch Al Trautwig’s Pre Game April Fools Day Prank on Brad Isbister…..LOL when he did that isbister came in the game and had a good game….

  34. ORR kicks Ying Yang on

I was goin over some of Sean Averys numbers this season…..

Jeez he is doing great as a ranger….

55 games as a king and he has 10 goals and 15 assists i think

26 games as a ranger and he has 8 goals and 11 assists…..

You all probably know this but i thought id throw it in…Avery is great

Im gonna have to trade my ortmeyer jersey in….Just incase hes not resigned….Im thinking Callahan or Giardi..what do you people think…safe choice??

  35. DanTheRangerFan on

I agree who cares who we face…We just have to keep on going strong. This Rangers team is lethal when they take advantage of their depth. Lets Go Rangers!!! Look for me tom night at the game with the short run black Rangers Jersey (:

  36. Maybe they said they fired Claude because he was too big a man to admit publically that he feared Sean Avery.

If you play Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” backwards, you will hear Sean Avery banging your sister.

Once, while having sex in a tractor-trailer, part of Sean Avery’s sperm escaped and got into the engine. We now know this truck as Optimus Prime.

  37. Fruity Cupcake on

My first thought was that there was a whispering campaign against their coach. What Marty wants, Marty gets? Seems to me that should that be the case, the Debbies will be ecstatic and cruise through this last week. Then they fail, because Sean Avery wills it.

If a tree falls in New Jersey, does Sean Avery hear it?

Where is Amelia Earhart? Living under an assumed name: Elisha Cuthbert.

What is the sound of one hand clapping? Sean Avery.

That was fun! Good night, Ranger fans!
