Lundqvist out, Valiquette in

151

Yikes…

No, Henrik Lundqvist isn’t hurt, or even sick. But he has started 19 straight games, and Tom Renney figured better to rest his starter now than in two games against the Islanders next week. Personally, I think the team should have called up Al Montoya, who is playing in Philadelphia tonight for the Wolf Pack, instead of Valiquette.

“He needs a break,” Renney said. “I thought about it after the game the other night, we talked about it yesterday and decided. We got two games against the Islanders next week and we need him (Henrik) to be fresh.”

Martin Straka will still be a game-time decision, although it sounds like he’s going in.

No players were called up from Hartford.

JD, what can I do to really piss off the fans…put Valiquette it? Yeah that should work. We really need these two points but screw ‘em. Hmmm, maybe I should sit Girardi too and play Malik the whole 60 minutes. He’s big and strong and should be able to do it.

  3. Longtimerangerfan on

Oh well, at least it should be a nice ceremony for JD…the management does them up good. I called my son on the train and told him about the goalie change and I think he is getting off at 125th st. and catching the next train north…just kidding, he’s just as die hard as I am.

forget a win tonite.the highly impressive year old nver was goalie will start instead of the king.on the surface i am ok with that.but once again the moron refuses to play a deserving young player in favor of a nothing, piece of garbage vet who cannot play in the nhl.al montoya has desereved a shot to play in the game today.he is the ahl goalie of the month!!!!how can any fan have nothing but contempt and dislike for the hyeena when yet again a deserving kid gets over looked for a life long ahl scrub!!!!!!just amazing.

  8. repost…as per the NYT the NYR have not won a playoff game since 1997. There’s one thing Renney can try to do next year, when his clueless bosses bring him back.

renney is an amatuer coach who will never win a playoff game bklynblue.we are doomed as long as he is our coach.

Is it just me or does it look like they just try to find new and exciting ways to piss us off?

  13. Jonathan Probber on

I think this is the most compelling indicator to date that they’ve given up on the season.

Incidentally, Vodka and cranberry is a pleasant mid-day drink.

  14. Rangers will jump out to 2-0 lead..Roll over and play dead in 3rd and lose in OT 3-2

  15. Jonathan Probber on

Not to worry. Most cheap vodkas mix well with cranberry. I sip the premium stuff (when I can afford it) on the rocks.

  16. Longtimerangerfan on

No Cranberry juice so will have to go with the “neat” variety aka very dry martini.

maybe they are trying to get a better draft pick?

Worked for Pittsburgh when they got Lemieux…of course they didn’t have the lottery back then.

He does seem to have the gift, though admittedly it doesn’t take much around here.

Dry vodka martini a very nice drink, though I’m a gin man when it comes to martinis.

  20. With the season a wash, can someone answer this:

    Q. Why Brad Isbister rather than see a prospect for a month?

    A. Because Jagr.

    Q. What?
    A. Because at 240lbs, Jagr needs protection.

As ridiculous as it sounds, another Jagr decision. Would could have seen kids play (hi, Montoya!) such as Callahan, or others (Dawes, etc) but rather we have a waiver player.

    Great decision.

  21. yeah. brain surgeons Jagr decides the goalie call up!!!!!!

    get a life losers……………

  22. how come nobody realizes that having a kid play 4th line minutes does nothing for their development?

  23. perhaps one poster is right…..this is just a ploy for a better draft pick!

you gotta look at the bright side of life!

btw, isbister cannot protect anyone. tell jagr; not me.

  24. DumpJagrDope on

“how come nobody realizes that having a kid play 4th line minutes does nothing for their development?”

even Orr is lately getting big minutes, so why not a kid? A guy like Byers or Korpikoski would be fine with 4th line minutes.

  25. Stuart,

do you enjoy your head in the sand?

You don’t think jagr makes decisions here?

Was it Renney’s decision or Jagr’s NOT to participate in the shootout against the devils? Brooks calls him out publically, and suddenly, he is in the shootout?

Jagr’s leadership (cough, cough) is questioned by a 34 year old defenseman. Surprised to see him traded? Prucha not hot: move him out of Jagr’s home and off Jagr’s line.

Let’s face it, Barry Melrose is right. Jagr is a strictly one dimensional player, on the downswing, and is completely unwanted by every team in the league. He is a drag on the locker room when he is not scoring, and he divides teams. This year it was Shanny and supporters (hit hard, crash the net) versus the soft Euros (pretty passes, pretty goals, hey, get us some protection!).

    Jagr came out on top.

    We, of course, did not.

Washington gave him to us for nothing and even paid his salary. C’mon, Buckwheat? gimme a break. Melrose said that in the off season, unless Jagr retires, the Rangers are stuck with him and will not win a Stanley Cup with Jamomir Jagr.

    Wake up, Stewie.

  26. Nich,

we are not going to make the playoffs. Give a kid a call up and give him plenty of minutes. Lots and lots of experience. The season is over, let the hungry kids at the ice. The overpaid vets did not do the job.

What is hard to understand about that?

Are you and Stuart the same person?

  27. I would also like to add this about 4th line minutes:

We have some youngsters who would VERY much benefit from 4th line minutes.

    Who?

those who have been playing AHL hockey regularly. Give them a chance to see the pace and speed of the game. It is good for their development.

Let’s give Alex a call up. Pascal would feel better about things if Alex did well (or did “good” for those who don’t like no good American on blogs)

  28. “Nich,

James Dolan owns the team and as long as he does this team nor the knicks will ever rebuild. he doesnt care about winning or championships he cares about attendance. mediocre teams at MSG sell out unfortunatley. that is why we have been mediocre forever and never horrible. we’ve always been in the 9-11th spot this time of year just a few points out of contention so we make a move to try to get in. a new GM would be nice but what we really need is an owner that demands results!! i bet sather/renney and co. would be 10x better if they actually felt like their jobs werent secure. people bash mark cuban for being rude, abbraisive, and a huge fan boy of his team……. id take him in a second as my owner because he puts a good product out there!!! coincidentally he is looking to buy a hockey team! please god james dolan sell this team!

  29. where is montoya? this is prob the equivalent of throwing someone like rachunek into goal.

  30. It was a bad goal maybe rookie nerves but did you see how malik let the defenseman go right by him.

  31. i would allow someone like montoya to make a mistake like that, b/c he;s yet to play in the nhl. valiquette has been around awhile.

  32. Jack Tors,

no argument from me. Sports Illustrated did a great job in showing us all what the owner is really like.

this explains why he wants “starbury” and Jagr to play fancy. Who cares about “boring devils defense” when you can lose in style.

The problem is that MSG fans are so loyal, they won’t boycott. Even Islander fans organized themselves better………………………..

This could be an enjoyable Saturday.

We could be watching Montoya and a bunch of kids skating for a job.

Back to the Disney channel with the kids.

Sometimes, MSG and TDIS get a bit mixed up.

  35. If the Garden fans don’t get the vocal revolution started after this sh!t, then they don’t deserve a winner.

  36. this would have to be one of the stupidest moves in a long time- you have a very promising & GOOD goalie in the AHL who just won goalie of the month, but eh, lets stick in some guy who’s shown he cant win in the NHL. good f**king job renney. if and when we lose this game, you can leave the blame completely on renney for not thinking.

  37. czechthemout!!!!! on

did you expect boston tp give up somene who was actually good for ward?

  38. Renney, when we get shutout today, do yourself and all of us a favor…FIRE YOURSELF!

  39. you might say it’s a coincidence they are down 2-0, like they have been up 2-0 and lost, but people dont understand the Rangers find ways to lose.

  40. Sam, I totally agree with you. We should have called up Montoya. I know he was returning from an injury over the last few weeks, but he was named AHL player of the week or month within the last few days. I think the big club’s playoff hopes are more important that Hartford’s at this point. Why not bring up Montoya, who may be your future goaltender, and put him in a big game today? Valiquette is a retread who can play well as a backup in the AHL, but is not NHL material. Now we are down 2-0 and JD’s team is going to knock us out of the playoffs, or even worse, the Isles will this week with 2 games and Ryan Smyth..could it be worse?
Wow, I really wish we had JD as our GM instead of Sather. There was a time in ’94 after the Cup, where the Rangers almost asked JD to be there GM and get rid of Smith, in the battle between Smith and Keenan.

Hearing him speak on this game, he is knowledgable and I think he will rebuild this team quickly and in the right way, kinda envious..

  41. czechthemout!!!!! on

boy i wish jd was our gm instead of the shit that permiates the corperate offices and the space behind the bench.

  42. Seamus yea…Jagr decides the team colors, the goalie, the callups, and the draft picks..

you are the fool. They are undermanned it is not his fault. It is easy to blame the guy who makes the most $….

I guess Jagr approved the Avery trade and the Shanahan signing..

You guys are bitter, jeoulous, and foolish. WHy be jealous becuase he makes more money, who cares…

  43. LEETCHY

I think we all know too well that the Rangers find ways to lose in any situation. Being down 2-0 doesn’t help any-

  44. Sather is invisible.
Fans never see him. He never stops by the
booth to talk to Sam R. about the Club’s
    situation and (lack of) progress.

This organization is run by a pack of incompetent fools.

  45. czechthemout!!!!! on

stuart-the fact of the matter is that jagr has alot of imput into many decisions that renney makes on the ice.

  46. So Jagr recommended Valiquette?

Who in their righ mind (other than Renney) would do that?

  47. DumpJagrDope on

I find it ironic that Renney was the one to recommend Andy Murray to JD. Or maybe Hyena was trying to remove his toughest competition from the market?

  48. DumpJagrDope on

    “So Jagr recommended Valiquette?”

My sources tell me that Jagr likes Valiquette because he is the only goalie he can score on on a breakaway.

  51. Chezhmeout how do you know? Your crystal ball told you..

you have no idea what goes on there so do not act like you do……

And if Jagr disagreed with a decision how would that matter, he is a player…

You guys need someone to blame for the situation. The reason they are in this perdicament is easy; about 7 blown games.. No stolen games(maybe Dallas when Lundqvist was great) else they have not stolen a game this yr. They have blown 7 games at least. I can remember them becuase they are part of my nightly nightmare. They make bad decisions in their own zone, and are unclutch..

  52. Since the playoffs are pretty much a lost cause now…lets look at what the Rangers may have in store for seasons to come:

    Prucha-Straka-Jagr

    DAWES-Immonen-CALLAHAN

    Hossa-Cullen-BOURRET

    Hollweg-Betts-Ortmeyer
    ——-
    STAAL-Tyutin

    Rachunek-Roszival

    Giradi-Pock

They should play Malikenstein on the PP…but not on the point, in front of the net as he is a big pylon and would screen the goalie.

Jagr just keeps missing the net, he looks more and more like a slower Nedved.

  56. rumor has it Renney asked Sather to trade A Ward 2times, because the 1st time he made a mistake thinking he said J Ward;)

  57. this group of guys ( i cant even call them a team) looks more and more like my nephews team on the ice- barely getting the stick on the puck & fanning on shots. but we’re suppose to dish out 80 bucks to go watch these guys. sure.

  61. DumpJagrDope on

The rule about kicking the puck in should change at least to that it is allowed if there was no chance to get the stick on the puck. the bottom line is the goalies should stop the puck, not keep an eye on the sticks.

  67. czechthemout!!!!! on

because he has played alot of hockey in this league and been a good team mate.he brings alot to the table.he has an abrasive style f play that is very complimentary to jagr and mikey and what they do.did you not know that leety2?

  68. Nylander wants bigger nets next season. 6 ft. wide is not enough for him for a gimme putt.

  69. DumpJagrDope on

Without Straka, there is nobody to fetch to puck for Jagr like a good dog.

I want bigger nets as well the nets look ridiculously small compared to goalies, goales barely have to do anything but stand there.

  70. czech- what i do know is isbister cant get his fucking stick on the puck in several occasions. a breakaway, right in front of the net and a pass from two skilled players. so in that case, i have not seen this “abrasive style” and “complimenting” he’s done on that line.

  76. so you think renney will be kicking himself after this game for putting in valiquette?

YES- why? b/c even w/ henrik’s rest we’ll lose the games next week against the isles.

  77. Whoever made the point about Sather being invisible, not even visiting the booth and explaining to the fans what is going on, what the future holds (even if it is b.s.), it was a good one.
