The Rangers are denying a report that says they traded for Mattias Norstrom.

Norstrom is apparently headed to Dallas.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are done.

More later from the Garden…

  1. Isbister was called up, I’m not sure if we still need another player (I think only if Straka can’t go).

  2. This is what Hockeysfuture.com has to say about Alex Bourret (Atlanta top rated prospect, according to Spector):

    Talent Analysis

Beyond his offensive ability, the most dominant aspect of Bourret’s game is his physical play. Rare is the shift that he does not throw a heavy body check. Built like a tank, Bourret hits to hurt – often – but he also does so cleanly. He is willing to get his nose dirty, and stick up for his teammates. He played regularly in all situations, notching seven power-play goals and five short-handed goals, and proved to be a clutch scorer, pick up five game-winning markers as well. Regardless of his short (if stocky) stature, Bourret’s lead-by-example style, his grit, desire, and excellent two-way awareness makes him a high-potential prospect

    Maybe Sather hasn’t retired yet.

Now, if only we don’t bury him in Hartford………………………

maybe he can come to the Garden, dress nice, and sit next to Pock and learn from watching Malik??

  4. Sucks about Ryan Smyth. Awesome about Bourret. Sorry to repeat myself, but anyone know about his trade from Maine to be “closer to home”? Because lord knows New York City’s a little harder to handle than Maine.

  5. Islanders really overpaid for Smyth, Smyth is not that great, then again neither is O’Marra and Nilson

  6. Alex Bourret
    TEAM: Lewiston, QMJHL
    POS: Centre SH: Left
    HT: 5’10” WT: 210 lbs DOB: October 5, 1986
    2003/04: GP 65 G 22 A 41 P 63 PIM 94
He may only be 5’10”, however at 210 lbs. he is built like a tank, and hits like a truck. Perhaps the most “feared hitter” in the QMJHL, he currently is leading the MAINEiacs in scoring with 44 points, good for a fourth place in the QMJHL scoring race. He’s third in assists with 27. Bourret is also first in the league in the plus/minus category with +25 rating. We like his work ethic and his ability to make things happen. He has a great sense for the puck; nice set of hands that allow him to make plays in traffic. Goes into the tough areas of the ice willingly and takes an aggressive approach to any 1 on 1 situation.

  7. nobody hangs around the net like Smyth. if he had gone to SJ, he could have scored 50 goals playing with Joe T.

  8. what about Maine? Bourret plays on the Chicago Wolves in the AHL now.. so he’ll be put in Hartford and improve that team for now..

  9. LAST POST (for now)

how can anyone not be loving this deadline..?

    we got rid of Krog.
Ward (34 years old) for Mara (27) and a PP D-man
    and
Dupuis (UFA) for Alex Bourret (20-year old prospect) AND a 3rd Round pick..

nothing too much given up, got younger, got a prospect and a pick..

  10. Hurray for Bourret on

I will team up with my boys Avery and Hollweg and we will run the Isles through the boards into the 5th row.

  11. did anyone pick up Cajanek off waivers?

I wonder why so many players weren’t traded, Anaheim basically didn’t make a big move, why wasn’t Weekes traded? high salary?

  12. Anthony:
“Maybe Glen’s trip to Edmonton reunited him with his Brain.”

Maybe he spent some time with his old friends in Edmonton (Messier, Lowe, etc.) . I can see one of his old cronies telling him to scoop up Bourret. It doesn’t seem like a typical Sather transaction.

  13. Dank,

I like those moves. Love? Love would have been a many spendored thing if Malik and Rachunek would have been moved for anything, including equipment managers.

Love would have meant knowing that our new coach LOVES to develop youth and will tell the NY Press to be patient or shut up and let the kids develop.

Love would have been Jagr for Smith.

all we can do now is watch the Islanders make the playoffs and listen to the taunts.

  14. we have to have someone come up, don’t we….i think we’re at exactly 20 players and 7 of them are D-Men…i exclude Shanny, Straka and Weekes from the list because they’re injured…

    1)Nylander
    2)Jagr
    3)Hossa
    4)Prucha
    5)Avery
    6)Cullen
    7)Isbister
    8)Orty
    9)Hollweg
    10)Betts
    11)Orr
    12)Tyutin
    13)Girardi
    14)Pock
    15)Malik
    16)Roszival
    17)Mara?!
    18)Rachunek
    19)Lundqvist
    20)Valiquette

    am i missing anyone?!?!

    AZ

  15. I agree that this was a smart deadline and no trades were made just to make them.

Giradi, Hossa, prucha, Pock, Ortmeyer, Tyutin and Lundqvist are still around post-deadline and all but Pock play in every game. All are 25 and under and still can be an important piece of the team. A few contracts end this year. Mara is only 27 so they got younger by trading Ward for him. Avery is 26 and I hope he’s here to stay.

Its not as bad as it seems, I want to see what happens in the offseason before I begin ripping. Let Nylander go and sign Gomez and all of a sudden things look much different. Its just hard to deal with when they are losing now.

And now….what to do with the eurofags?

  16. Hurray for Bourret on

since they have a game tonite, and those new guys will not be here, who Mr. Sam, is going to dress tonite for the Rangers??

  17. weird that Sabres got only 1 player for one of their injured ones, I would give up Straka or Nylander straight up for injured Gaustad.

  18. Hurray for Bourret on

it is weird that they said they would trade Biron for a player for playoff depth, then they turn around and deal him for only a 2nd round pick. and then add a worse backup in Conklin

  19. we would love it a lot more, dank, if they got rid of Prince Pout and his posse

    that was funny.

    eurofags. that was funny, too.

Did anyone like “Jaromir No Mas Jagr”?

I think quitting in New York is just not the best thing a Captain should do

    Broduer 1 Jags 0

    Shanny 1 Brokeback Brashear 0

  20. On Bourret, I caught him a few times watching Graham in the Q (on the web of course). Bourret plays like a mix of Ryan Hollweg and Michael Ryder. Think Holly’s body, and Ryders rush’s with the puck. I’ve saw him score on a heck of a end to end rush, he often took the puck end to end in the Q.

I don’t know if there is such thing as a “hit or miss” prospects, but Bourret got allot of bust potential. He practically doesn’t use his brain at all playing. He got a high skill level, is really strong, got good speed and nifty hands, but playing the style that he does, he must be more talented then the players he goes up against to have success, there are no inbetween. If his skilllevel aren’t dominating, he is pretty useless offensivly, he doesn’t seem like a kid who is good defensivly, and he aren’t tough enough to compete with Hollweg.

So I can’t say that I am absolutely thrilled getting him, but he is defenitly a good pickup IMO for Dupuis, especially along with a 3rd rounder. We got a great offseason program, who knows, maybe Bourret can really pull something off this summer and make that final jump, my expectations on him are lower then on Dawes, but he might have a higher potential.

  21. what does “No Mas” mean?

it would have been even smarter to dump Jagr, Shanahan, Malik, Straka, Nylander, Pock and Rachunek. many of them are UFA after this season and it would be an even bigger mistake to bring them back, so why not get something useful in return? the rest are horrible and it was as good a time as any to get rid of them and move on.

  22. Hurray for Bourret on

go to the WFAN website and later they will have the interview available to listen to.

he makes no sense. he says that the Jessiman pick was the fault of Maloney and Renney, but then he says that Maloney should follow Sather in the GM job.

  23. holy crap did anyone realize the Penguins traded Dominic Moore to the Wild, I bet he centers Adam Hall in his first game.

  24. DumJagr the Sabres got Zubrus and Conklin for Biron and a 1st rounder. Zubrus is a FA at end of the yr. but Briere, there captain(mental block), are unrestricted FA and Vanek is a restricted FA. Too sign them all they needed to free up $.

Buffalo did fine. All the top teams; San Jose, Detroit, etc picked up a guy or 2 in the last 2 weeks…

The Rangers did not do anything wrong I personally would have loved them to get rid of Rachunek and Nylander also but they are still in partial denial…

  25. Yahoo have us as getting a 3rd rounder not giving one up, ESPN and nhl.com the other way around.
Sam – can you ask someone to clarify?

Either way this Bourret kid looks useful, lets hope he gets his chance.
