My fingers are demanding a trade

129

OK, lots of ground to cover and not a lot of time to cover it:

  • First, the most pressing: as of this writing, Paul Mara has not arrived at the Garden because of airline problems in Boston, but the Rangers are still hoping to get him in the lineup tonight. The hope is that Mara would see some time on the power play, where his shot — some defensemen actually use those — would be an asset.
  • Marty Straka is out and both Jarkko Immonen and Brad Isbister are in. The Straka shoulder injury likely won’t keep him out beyond tonight.
  • Jaromir Jagr could afford to laugh after first reading he was being shipped out of town, then finally realizing he was staying put. “That was close,” the Captain said with a smile. “I didn’t go to practice because I was packing.” Jagr said he was inundated with calls from the Czech Republic after reports surfaced that the Rangers were shopping him. “It was crazy,” Jagr said. “People were panicking.”
  • His laughter aside, Jagr quickly turned serious when I asked him about the perception that he was the reason Aaron Ward was shipped out of town. Reports had the two engaged in a heated argument on the bench during a game in Tampa Bay Feb. 3, but Jagr said it was overblown. Furthermore, he was adamant that Ward’s trade was more a circumstance of curious timing.

“Seriously, there was nothing between us,” Jagr said. “There was nothing wrong. He was the guy that brought it in. It was bad timing. I’ve got no problem with anybody. I love my teammates. I’d do anything for them.” Then Jagr couldn’t resist a joke. “I even sit on the bench when we’re supposed to go to a shootout.”

So just to clarify, I said to Jagr, there was never a conversation where you said Ward has to go? Jagr continued.

“Are you kidding me? I am 35 years old. I don’t know how long I’m going to play. I’m going to play one year. Do you think it’s going to bother me? I understand not everybody is going to like you. I don’t really care. I like everybody. There are so many great players, so many great guys. Even if it’s something, but it wasn’t, there are 24 other guys. It was just bad timing. I don’t think he feel comfortable here, but I don’t make changes. All of a sudden he was benched last game and all of a sudden, whatever happens last week comes into the newspaper. But he brought it into the newspaper, not me.”

    OK, more to come later….

    1. Meh…I’m sure there’s a little something more. I don’t see Jagr as the one begging Slats to trade Ward, but their argument had some significance, as well as Ward’s mediocre play.

    2. Sam, how about a little statement analysis?

listen carefully to what he says….and what he repeats:

“Are you kidding me? I am 35 years old. I don’t know how long I’m going to play. I’m going to play one year. Do you think it’s going to bother me? 3. “Jaromir Jagr could afford to laugh after first reading he was being shipped out of town, then finally realizing he was staying put. “That was close,â€? the Captain said with a smile. “I didn’t go to practice because I was packing.â€? yes, it is unthinkable that any other team would want a cancer that big and such a late stage.

    4. Jagr must be in a very good mood that he beat Ward and Ward got traded. Honestly Sam, why you bother asking Jagr about it, ask Pock or Weekes or something, because Jagr would never admit there was a problem.

    5. I think Jagr is right and this is being blown out of proportion. I’ve played in pick up games where guys are blowing at each other on the bench — this was one argument over a month ago! Big freakin’ deal.

I think if Aaron Ward had been playing great hockey – if the Rangers had been playing great hockey – this would not be an issue.

However, Ward is one of few tradeable rangers, and by all accounts we got an upgrade – at least in age if not skill.

      So whatever ..

    6. Jagr is certainly all laughs and chuckles as his team goes in the dumper and the teammates he purports to love get shipped away. what a fraud.

    7. Jagr can’t stand criticism that is why he surrounds himself with his posse and a puppet coach. He is some sort of egomaniac who loves to be praised and loved and can’t tolerate any criticism. He even gets hurt when someone screams at him to shoot. That is why he is a cancer.

BTW we have been screwed it is Dupuis ans 3rd rounder for Bourret, so it is nowhere near as good as we thought before.

    8. so does this mean that we are still gunning for the playoffs? after the trades today (shaking my head), i honestly don’t know where we stand.

    9. it means they know they won’t make it, but can’t admit it because the fans would not show up, but they won’t trade away the core of the problem because that posse runs the team. so expect more of the same next year.

    10. "Captain" Jagr on

I am sick of Jaromir Jagr and everything that comes with him. I feel there are no excuses and it is disgusting to see how the coaches, equipment managers, and several of his team mates (Numbers 3, 82, and 92 and even possibly at times number 81). I don’t think he’s even been to ANY of the charity events this year and if we aren’t automatically winning by 2 minutes into the second or if he’s given 10 shots and made no goals.. He gives up, being devoted to your team is one thing; being an actor which should never be drawn into hockey.

    11. DumpJagrDope, while your spewing your infinite wisdom you might want to check the facts. It was Dupuis FOR Bourret & a 3rd Rd pick but I am sure you knew that as well as you know everything else.

      Malcolm Forbes:
“The dumbest people I know are those who know it all.”

    12. Doodie Machetto on

So we have now traded Dominic Moore for Bourret and a 3rd rounder.

I like the moves they made. Dupuis sucked and is UFA anyway. I think Ward for Mara is a great trade as well. Mara still has something to prove.

I don’t like Isbister being in the lineup tonight. I would rather he be sent down and Callahan brought up. Good to see Immonen getting some time and Straka getting some rest. The time off might help him recapture his game.

Sam, any idea on line combinations and defensive pairings?

    13. DJD does have it right.

this is right off the NHL.com official trade website.

/27/07 F Alex Bourret LW Pascal Dupuis,
      2007 3rd-round pick

    14. Doodie Machetto on

Guys, playoffs are officially no longer an option unless the Rangers win literally every single one of their games from here on. The reason: the New York Islanders.

Due to the new scheduling that pitts divisional teams against each other so often, it is very unlikely that 4 teams will make the playoffs from one division. The deals that the Islanders made have definitely secured them a playoff spot, and with the Devs and Pens not going anywhere, the Rangers have virtually no chance.

By the way, good to see the Isles sell the farm for a UFA.

    15. “DumpJagrDope, while your spewing your infinite wisdom you might want to check the facts. It was Dupuis FOR Bourret & a 3rd Rd pick but I am sure you knew that as well as you know everything else.”

I did, moron, that is why I posted it.

    16. Folks, let me report it straight.

      Rangers acquire Alex Bourett
      ……………………….

Atlanta gets Pascal Dupuis AND the Ranger 3rd round ’07 pick

    17. from BB about DP article in daily news–
      ……………………………………

“The story gives some insight into Jagr’s leadership style — he wants people to play a certain way, and he tells them so in no uncertain terms. His European teammates quietly do what he tells them to (tells them to, not asks them to).”
      …………………………………….

yeah, that says it all, just confirms what we have been saying all along. the Prince and his puppets.

    18. “oh, I still like that trade.”

true, we don’t need more Billy Ryans or Hilliers or Roche or Jonasen

    19. czechthemout!!!!! on

what is it going to take to get callahan up here.i like the immonen call up,hate the isbister callup, dumb move.should call up lifiton for the pittsburg game.they have another four callups left lets hope they use them wisely.we need scoring and they call up a guy who is 30years old and is 4th in goal scoring in hartford with 15 goals, while a kid who busts his ass, leads the team in goals with 34 gets to “develop”.i love the bourret trade, wanted him in the 2005 draft.another avery with more offense, currently on an eight game pt scoring streak.

    20. I think you guys are wrong. ESPN Radio and the Rangers pre-game show confirmed the RANGERS got the 3rd round pick.

    21. Good for Don Koharski for telling Avery to shut up without actually giving him a penalty. That’s a veteran ref.

Also, re: the empty seats, the Rangers will still report a sellout.

    22. This guy we got from Atlanta is a sick player. How did this trade go through? Dupuis was a good player but worth Atlanta’s 1st round pick from ’05?

    23. Sam what’s the chances Jagr was telling you the truth, nothing but the truth? It’s almost like that Las Vegas commercial;)

    24. Thursday is gonna be a real tough game. With the new additions of Laraque and Roberts that team is gonna be alot better. Colton Orr is gonna get his but kicked

    25. Doodie Machetto on

“true, we don’t need more Billy Ryans or Hilliers or Roche or Jonasen”

I don’t understand what you mean by that.

      Lenny, that’s pretty funny.

    26. Doodie Machetto on

      Nevermind, I found one.

Angelus, this is how they started:

      Hossa-Nylander-Jagr
      Avery-Cullen-Prucha
      Isbister-Immonen-Ortmeyer
      Hollweg-Betts-Orr

    27. I don’t think Sam Rosen is going to get Guillaume Latendresse’s name right by the end of the night.

    28. Jagr never practices breakaways because he knows he is so slow that even the biggest defensemen can outrace him

    29. “Alex is a high level prospect we are very excited about adding to our organization,” said Rangers Vice President of Player Personnel and Assistant General Manager Don Maloney. ” We had him rated very highly at the 2005 draft and had we not traded up to get Marc Staal, he likely would have been our selection.”

    30. Doodie Machetto on

So we traded Dominic Moore and a 3rd round pick for Bourret. I’ll take that.

PS, a bit of irony: Moore was traded to the Wild, so now he is playing alongside Hall.

    31. God, can Betts be any uglier. How do those sick kids not get scared shitless when “2 assists” visits them?

    32. My unshaven ass is like Jennifer Aniston next to Betts, but my ass can’t win a faceoff (though I’m sure it could block a shot or two).

    33. Hopefully, this is not a fluke from Hossa and it carries over into next season.

HEY RANGERS: THAT’S WHY YOU SHOOT ON THE POWERPLAY AND KEEP PEOPLE IN FRONT OF THE NET!!!

    34. Habs are not playing anywhere near as good as they did last night vs. Leafs.

Ryder has already taken 2 bad penalties.

    35. who cares if they are good or bad as long as the Rangers win. It doesnt seem to matter lately whether teams are good or bad. From NJ to Philly, weve lost to em all

    36. What the hell is Malik doing wearing an A on his jersey? I’d much rather see Orts with it.

      HOSSA SCORES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!

    37. DumpJagrDope you are killin me, funny stuff

      Blair Betts LMAO…

Glen bent Wadell over the war room table today. This kid is instantly the crown jewel of the Ranger prospect forwards

    38. I remember Jagr, Straka, and Kaspar. I also remember Rucchin wearing the A on occasion. I don’t remember Rozy though. I could have sworn Ortmeyer wore it once.

    39. maybe once, but i’m sure it wasn’t full time. maybe it was Rucchin and not Rozy, that is the one I wasn’t sure on.

This is what is should be:

C – Shanny (a true leader in any situation)

A – Straka (teams best player this year)
A – Rozy (he is our best veteran defenseman)
      A – Orts (the sparkplug)

    40. Isbister is useless, slow and not physical, get him out of here, Callahan should have been playing instead or Korpikoski or Jessiman or Byers

    41. Doodie Machetto on

DumpJagrDope. Yeah those morons who couldn’t see it was Orr.
Don’t worry, I thought it was Orr too.

PS- Bourret makes trading Dominic Moore fantastic.

    42. I agree DJD – Good time to give those guys a shot and give them some experience. Isibister isn’t doing anything

    43. Nice Toronto, Montreal, and Carolina going down the tubes- now if the Flyers would step it up we’d be golden!

    44. That is the song the Rangers started playing in the lockerroom after wins last year.

      SWEEEEEEEET CAROLINE!

      OH! Heave! Ho!

    45. “Could Bourret be a Theo Fleury without the booze??? I loved that guy!!”

Bourret is a lot bigger and more physical

    46. Doodie, it isn’t what I intended.

I put one asterik, three spaces and a hyphen, then hank. two asteriks, two spaces and a hyphen, the Hossa. three asteriks, one space and a hyphen, then jags. it just ended up like that, i thought it was pretty cool after I did it.

it’s pretty cool to see Mara say he was a Rangers fan and huge Brian Leetch fan growing up.

    47. Sam I sure you remember this…“I think when your top guy and your captain does well, the team does well,â€? Jagr said. “I understand it’s a team game but when the game’s on the line, the individuals have to make a difference. That’s what I truly believe. If you want to be the special guy, you have to have those special moments. That’s what I play for, that’s what I live for.â€?

While the Rangers’ captain still made it clear that he didn’t consider himself above the team, he also emphasized that it’s up to him to to get the Rangers out of their current rut (in fact, Jagr was so concerned about making sure that message came across correctly he actually turned back to us after our interview just to clarify. “Did I answer everything right? he said. “I don’t want to sound like the team isn’t important.)

“I’m not going to sit here and talk about how the team should do. I have to be the first guy to do it. I don’t play good, the team don’t play good. That’s how it is. I’m not saying I’m the team….But I don’t think I’m going to help anybody by talking about how the team should play if I don’t play good, he said.

“That’s why I didn’t go to the All-Star game. That’s why I want to make the playoffs and do something in the playoffs. These people in New York deserve it. Our team deserves it. I live for it. There’s no better place to play. There’s no better organization to play for. We get everything we need. Now we have to do it.

    48. the reason he didn’t go to the all star game is because he would look really bad compared to other stars, and plus he doesn’t get paid for it and he doesn’t have any skills to show off in the skills competition.

    49. don’t get too excited about Hossa yet he is just 3 games ahead of last year’s stats(and he didn’t play on the top line last season)

    50. Hossa has been great, dont hate on him, he has been playing the top line for the last 10 games, not the whole year. Somehow someway the Rangers are still in this chase with everyone except the Isles losing last night in regulation. Obviously we have to win, but from what we saw from Montreal and Carolina the last two time we have played them, why should they have any reason for being in the playoffs and not us?

    51. the Rangers won’t be out of it if Habs, Leafs and Canes continue to play like they did tonight. all 3 of them acted like they weren’t interested enough to care.

    52. DumpJagrDope – JUST SHUT UP ON YOUR ANTI-JAGR BULLS**T!!! You’re an ASSH**E!!! You don’t care if Rangers win, do you? My advice to you: STOP WATCHING HOCKEY! You don’t know much about it – you only complain…

    53. Wildcard is working overtime in the MSG PR department, who do you think came up with idea that Mara was a Ranger fan and idolized Leetch?
