Shanny’s return probably not imminent

67

No, Tom Renney assessment at the morning skate wasn’t this cryptic, but all I’m sayin’ is don’t expect Brendan Shanahan back after his stay on IR expires tomorrow.

Shanahan saw a neurologist yesterday. According to the coach, Shanny has only been cleared for light stretching so far — no skating and no hockey activities.

“They’re being very cautious,” Renney said. “It’s moving forward, maybe a little slower than they would’ve hoped, but they’re not surprised by where he is right now. I don’t know what that means as a time frame, to be honest with you; I’m paraphrasing and guessing at the length of time. He’s progressing but I don’t think it’s as quickly as they hoped. That doesn’t mean it’s inaccurate either. It’s a bit of a moving target.”

So there you go. The news is that there’s not much concrete to report. Renney isn’t sure when Shanahan has his next trip to the doctor.

*********************************************************

In other news, *Renney expects to use all the same forwards and defensemen as Thursday, with one possible exception.* Karel Rachunek has been dealing with some flu-like symptoms and the staff will decide on him when the team arrives at the Garden. The trainers were optimistic, Renney said, although I’m sure many of you would suggest that is a poor choice of words.

Also, *Sean Avery will play with Jagr again,* at least to start. Renney liked what he saw, but said the team must keep reasonable expectations for Avery. You can read that to mean: We’ll play him with Jags while he’s hot, but we must remember this isn’t exactly Bobby Hull we’re talking about.

OK, everyone. I’ll be back before the game tonight, live from the Garden. I should be around for a little bit if anyone has a question.

  1. RE POST

This is how great(WHAT A LAUGH) the NY Rangers prospect are that everyone wants to coddle and not trade:
The top 7 goal scorers in Hartford total 102 goals to date. 32 of them belong to Callahan.
No offense boys and girls. No offense in sight for the next few years.I guess we will have to get used to it unless we trade for some offense by losing some of our blue chip 3d and 4th liners that the Rangers are grooming!!!

  2. By comparison, the Chicago Wolves top seven goal scorers total 148 goals. Thats 46 more. I suggest we stop reading the names of these great prospects the Rangers supposedly have and start tracking their production versus other teams prospects.
It will change your mind about the bright future everyone sees.

  3. Josh – the newsday blog indicated Ward might not play and might be trade bait. Did you see anything to indicate that might occur (either him sitting or being trade bait?)

  4. Josh – Has anyone asked Renney especially lately w/ why rachunek has been playing and why he shouldnt get the press box in favor of pock?

  5. It’s true Ward was off the ice for the latter part of the skate. Renney said he was taken off for some shoulder treatment, but I guess we’ll have to see tonight if there is indeed more to it than that. Sorry I don’t have any more info for you than that.

  6. here’s the comment from the newsday blog…this would be great!! Ward blows and has been a huge bust…

    Ward on the move?

Defenseman Aaron Ward left the ice this morning during an optional practice after he was told he would be scratched for tonight’s game against Columbus, raising the possibility that he could be traded before Tuesday’s deadline.

Rumors surfaced a few weeks ago that Nashville had inquired about Ward, and more recently, San Jose has apparently discussed a potential three-way deal with the Rangers and Kings in which Ward would go to San Jose and the Rangers would receive either D Brent Sopel or Mattias Norstrom from LA.

The normally chatty Ward, who signed a two-year free-agent deal last summer after winning the Stanley Cup with Carolina, strode briskly past reporters who were unaware of the circumstances of his departure from the ice after the skate.

Coach Tom Renney would only say that he had not settled on his blue-line combinations yet, because at least one player had flu symptoms.

Ward, 34, has played in all 60 games, scored three goals and registered 10 assists, and is a minus 3. He has been playing with a broken toe and been part of several defensive breakdowns in recent weeks.

Several sources said that Ward engaged in a loud dispute with Jaromir Jagr on the Rangers bench during a Tampa game earlier this month, although the fallout from that was unclear.

  7. Back in early October I was so excited about this season. Man, what a major disappointment. They should have kept Sykora (sp?) if for no other reason than shootouts. What was he last year 5 of 6 or something?

  8. John M,

Who says the Rangers have a lot of top end prospects?

IMO, outside of Callahan, Korpikoski, Dawes and Baranka there is not any player in Hartford that I would not trade. And Dawes just barely makes the cut, and I would move him for another 20-22 year old prospect with some upside.

Of the Juniors I think Pyatt and Staal are the top guys, with Sauer on the bubble (continued good health suspect) of being a keeper.

  9. The truth of the matter is no one wants to trade with the Rangers because their prospects are so weak. Arron Ward is tradable because he has Stanley Cup mental toughness. A sparse commodity in Rangerland and getting sparser by the minute.

  10. Gregg…Sorry, I’m not really that qualified to answer that question because I’m not around that often. I can tell you no one asked Renney about Pock today.

  11. “By comparison, the Chicago Wolves top seven goal scorers total 148 goals. Thats 46 more. I suggest we stop reading the names of these great prospects the Rangers supposedly have and start tracking their production versus other teams prospects.

Schoenfeld is probably to blame for low scoring, he did a lousy job this season. but in any case some players in Hartford bring more to the table than the likes of Dupuis, Betts, etc.

  12. does anyone know to what level of hockey Renney played? I’d be surprised if it was past high school. College was for developing his sharp mind and flapping tongue.

  13. ok, josh, no worries….back to A. Ward, the sooner this bum gets traded the better. he is an im between, doesn’t do anything that well IMO…hes not that tough, hes not that steady, hes not good offensively to be a guy on the rush or the point. Def a big a bust..between him and rachunek they r just a scary bunch. I also think Ward and jagr were not exactly BFF..

  14. czechthemout!!!!! on

john m-your wrong about your assesment of the rangers prospects.first of all,all of the wolfpack top7 scorers are either rookies or second year pro’s.the wolves players are all like krog(played with wolves this year)failed nhl rejects who have been pro’s for a while.i for one have only based my desire to see players on the rangers who i’ve seen play with the pack this year.those players are:dubinsky, lifiton, byers, dawes, immonen, and clearly callahan who has no buisness plaing in hartford at all any more.

  15. “Several sources said that Ward engaged in a loud dispute with Jaromir Jagr on the Rangers bench during a Tampa game earlier this month, although the fallout from that was unclear.”

that explains everything, guess Jagr puke is not going anywhere. Ward is a very good defenseman and is probably our most physical, if his level of play dropped it is due to multiple injuries that he is playing with. Blame “the coach” for not giving him a chance to rest and get more healthy.

  16. From The Hard To Take Dept.: Watching how well the Isles have been playing, looking like a cohesive team, giving it up for 60 minutes. All this without their top scorer Yashin, who has been out for weeks. They are a collection of semi-talented youth, some skill (Blake/Satan) castoffs (such as Poti/Witt/Sillinger etc) and a good goalie. Why have they “jelled”? Ted Nolan. They have a good coach.

And the Rangers, who have double the talent of the Isles, flounder as usual, looking like anything but a team with a system, and the fourth horrible coach since Genius adorned us with his presence. Effity-effing depressing.

  17. czechthemout!!!!! on

that ward deal would be stupid.norstrom although very good is 33.he should have never been traded bt the rangers in the first place.unfortunatly that ship has sailed.sopel simply sucks.he was awful on the isls last year.if i had to choose,i would clearly want norstrom.but this is typical of the rangers.they should be holding out for either ryan suter.anything on the kings that’s worth anything they won’t trade.san jose has alot of good prospects that would look very attractive in red white and blue like matt carle.

  18. chardkerm

    Thats because the players coach themselves on the Rangers. Not so in Long Island. That supposed argument with Ward and Jagr probably went something like this;

Hey jerk. Either dump the puck in or skate it in. …Or… Hey jerk. Stop making me look like a bad d-man and comeback and cover your wing once in a while you lazy rectum.

  19. TEAMS play better without superstars. It is much harder to stop 4 capable lines that can all score and skate and hit, than a top line that gets overplayed and doubleshifted to the point when they are lacking energy to create things or think clearly. Idiot Renney will never get this concept though. Hockey is a team sport, that is why Rangers suck, that is why Jagr is cancer. Last season all they cared about was beating Graves’ record. This season the new attraction was Shanahan. It is never about THE TEAM here.

  20. John M,

Who says that no one will trade with the Rangers?

I think it is more of the fact that they keep asking for the same prospects. Philly wanted Dubinsky and Staal for Forsberg, those are two of the Rangers best prospects, obviously Philly thinks so too.

Staal is wanted by everyone in every deal.

Like I said earlier, who are all these people that are saying the Rangers are loaded with talented prospects? Outside of about the 5 top guys, none of the others are so great.

Even if you include some unknowns:

Callahan, Staal, Korpikoski, Baranka, Pyatt, Dubinsky, Sanguinetti, Sauer, Dawes.

I could see not including any of them for any 35 year olds, but most are not untouchable.

  21. czechthemout!!!!! on

dump-good point on the records stuff.it’s all about selling the names on the back of the jersey as opposed to the name on the front of the jersey.

  22. TSN.ca says the NY Post says (though I cant find it): “Karel Rachunek did not skate, either; he is suffering from a “lower-leg thing, but not a big deal,” coach Tom Renney said.”

so…which is it? flu or lower leg thing?

  23. To me Greg Moore looked amazing in pre-season, I can’t believe they cut him and I don’t understand his lack of production this season in AHL. He looked like a very good NHL player with great skating, passing, size, etc. he just looked so polished. What happened in Hartford? lack of icetime? bad linemates? injuries?

  24. For the record the Rangers should package Krog, Hossa, Rachunek, and Malik to get Alexander Giroux back. He has 50 plus points and is plus 27.

Stick that in your prospect pipe and smoke it!!!:)

  25. Also for the record. 23 out of 27 teams in the AHL have more goals for than Hartford to this point in the season. Shameful in my opinion.

  26. “Also for the record. 23 out of 27 teams in the AHL have more goals for than Hartford to this point in the season. Shameful in my opinion.”

which is why I think Schoenfeld should not coach Rangers and should let someone else coach Hartford. Rangers organization always has such problems finding good coaches it is ridiculous and are so reluctant to fire bad ones.

  27. Hartford is 4th best in goals against though. Seems like Schonfeld plays to win 1-0 every night. All I can say is if the Rangers are trying to be the Devils….they better reevaluate what the Penguins and Sabers are doing. Those teams are younger and will be playing their style, which happens to be very well adapted to the new NHL, for a long time in the Rangers conference.

  28. “TEAMS play better without superstars. your right. gretzky, yzerman, messier, lemiuex, etc etc never did a damn thing in this league becauyse they are superstars.

  29. check out the age of the Hartford players to the other teams in the league. They are much much younger… Have you guys heard a word it is called develop, give their young guys some time to develop. Also for the person that said they only had 3 to 5 top end prospects, SO??/ IS that suppose to be a bad thing, 3 to 5 very good players that can be on your roster for 5 to 10 yrs. is great…….

  30. Messier and Gretzky did nothing good after 36. Some superstars are team players, most are cancers and distractions.

  31. Stuart

Valid point Stuart. My only disagreement is what these players are being developed to become. I am a strong supporter of no holding, no hooking, no interference, no trapping, NHL. I believe in offensive pressure hockey. I want the Rangers to compete with the high octane teams like Pittsburgh and Buffalo . Along with Anaheim and San Jose.

  32. how come this is the first time we’re hearing about the ward/jagr incident? does anyone know exactly what happened?

  33. “how come this is the first time we’re hearing about the ward/jagr incident? does anyone know exactly what happened?”

I guess Sam did a terrible job and the PR department covered it up nicely.

  34. even with as good as Sam is, there’s plenty of politics & not alot of freedom of speech in any sport. Truth is not easy to come by from the NYR. But it seems to be way too much Jagr’s team.

  35. Isn’t it funny how the canes won the Stanley Cup with that “awful” Aaron Ward on D. they did not have one, not one single solitary star or big name Dman that anyone here would want, yet they beat everybody and won the Stanley Cup.

it shows that hockey is a team sport, and teams that favor the star treatment like the rangers are usually on the outside looking in.

and the Isles have lifted into a playoff spot by playing much better since they got Yashin out of there.

and the Caps beat the Debbies today, just to top off how weak the Rangers played.

  36. DumpJagrDope how can u possibly defend Ward? He has been putrid this year. ur trashing mattias cause he’s 33, r u aware Ward is 33….Ward and Rachunek our 2 of the biggest reasons this team is behind in the playoff race this year..Ward is clearly not the player they thought they were getting and i would love to see him go along with rachunek. With that said, i would prefer Blake over Mattias..

  37. Stuart,

I believe it was I who said they only had 5 top prospects. And no I never said it was a bad thing. I was asking John M what his point is, but he refuses to respond.

  38. If Aaron Ward goes to San Jose, he will be celebrating, leaving a clueless org. for one that plays kids and does it right.

  39. John M the one thing all the high octane teams have in common is alot of speed and alot of scoring depth..

At this time the Rangers lack for sure the depth…..

Again I am not an expert but what is going on feels much different then before the salary dump a few years ago. The team is much better(I say they should make the playoffs) and they have significantly more talent in the minors and a organized plan… Don’t laugh about the plan, Hartford etc is playing a system, etc..

  40. the guy bashing hartford is clueless. end of story. probably hasn’t seen them play once. they are one of the youngest groups in the entire league. they win games the right way defense first and they score big time goals when they need to. Sound familiar at all to you? i have no problem with someone that doesn’t know about the players in the organization outside of the varsity. I do have a problem when they parade their ignorance in front of all of us as gospel.

  41. another thing go watch lauri korpikoski and ryan callahan play. in fact i wish you saw them last night. best players on the ice. usually the case in every game they play

  42. Messier? Gretzky? Those guys didn’t do anything after 36? What?! That’s the criterion for judging their careers? They may have sucked as Rangers(M the second time), but get real. The first 16 years of their professional lives were silverware central. Not about team? Uh, the Oilers were about team and they had the single greatest player of all time during his prime. Ridiculous.

Yeah, Sam, this Jagr-Ward problem is the first time I can’t defend your reporting or blogging. That would have been interesting to hear about earlier. But I’m glad you’re bold enough to call out Ward for stinking. Although maybe that’s because you already know he’s being shipped…

  43. Kovy

No I don’t beleive for one minute that there are any prospects in the Ranger system that can score besides Callahan. I do believe they have 2 good defensemen in Stall and Sanguinetti. I also believe that Montoya will be better than Henrik one day.
But i am not going to sit and type that what I am seeing when I watch Hartford on B2 is awe inspiring offensive force. You guys have to be kidding me thinking that the Rangers have goal scoring on the farm or in juniors or in the NCAA.
I will not watch the DEVILS copycats. I will not be subjected to boring trap hockey. I have been a Rangers fan for 30 years and will not agree to a team philosophy that dictates that you win by scoring 30% less goals than everyone else and give up 35% less goals than all other NHL teams as a formula to win. Sorry not me.
If thats what’s being created in Hartford and beyond then I’m against it.

  44. Cherneski

It’s my opinion that no NHL team finds the Rangers Prospects in the same league as some better organizations prospects .Thats not to say D Maloney thinks the same way. Sorry I took so long to answer.

  45. Kovy

When you say best on the ice. What are you comparing them to? The competition in last nights game? OK . They were the best. Great. Now what? Are these 2 player going to be on the Rangers top 2 lines? Calahan should be. I said so earlier. But I said it in the context of this years team. I don’t know who will be on the top 2 lines next year because The Rangers may have other players signed by way of UFA.

  46. John M,

Well I agree the Rangers are lacking a serious scoring stud in the system. But there are always UFA options for those guys. It’s the core guys you want growing up together anyway.

Callahan’s NHL scoring potential is unknown. He might be a 20-30 goal guy, he might not. But I agree he’s the best hope we have right now for a legitimate NHL scoring threat in the system. He’s a surefire NHL player.

Korpikoski is a guy to watch. He’s got some very high end playmaking skills and puck skills. Plus he’s got a nice 6’2″/200-pound frame, and a good head on his shoulders. He’s a guy a lot of people feel might not tap his full potential until he hits the NHL. He too is a surefire NHL player.

Dubinsky is a guy to watch too as far as scoring potential goes. He’s big, strong and can get really mean. He’s also got good hands and a nose for scoring situations.

Tommy Pyatt is also a kid that might have some serious upside. He keeps getting better every year, but of course he’s a Junior and is probably a couple years away from proving he can make the jump.

After those guys, the offensive side is thin, no doubt. I’m still not sold on Dawes, but I won’t count him out either. He’s one of those guys, the second he’s counted out, is about three seconds before he makes you look bad. He’s done to to scouts his whole life!

  47. Cherneski

All I hear about Pyatt is his defense. Dubinski plays alot like D Moore from what I have seen. The wild card is Korpikosky in my opinion. That being said, no snipers. Why I ask? What are the negatives of drafting a speedy goal scoring skilled player who is weaker on defense? The draft should be balanced between the fast good hands prospects and some defensive aware prospects. In my opinion of course.

  48. John M,

I agree they need to draft some high end scoring threats. One guy they sort of did that with last year was Anisimov. He has a nice set of offensive gifts, and was drafted primarily for that reason. Of course he is very young, and we probably won’t know what he can do until he comes over to North America.

  49. “lauri korpikoski and ryan callahan-2 guys that will make the team next season for sure”

    Dawes also made the team…

  50. I am more interested in players that not can only score but play physical and go to the net and stand in the crease.

I don’t want perimeter only scorers.

  51. DUMP

Me too. I look back at Sathers Edmonton days after Gretz and Mess and he always had 7-10 forwards who went to the net and could pass and at least hit the net with their shots. He always found those type players. What makes it so hard to draft that way in NY?? Why do we have to seem be one of the NHL’s experimental teams that tries to put a bunch of international perimeter guys on the ice? Let the Islanders do it for the league.

  52. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future. Check out my site btw its really nice I am trying to get info all over the web about real estate leads
