Greater sense of urgency

54

Just when you thought a sense of order had returned to Rangerland (OK, you never thought that) the Rangers woke up this morning to find themselves back in ninth place in the East, trailing both Pittsburgh and Tampa, and tied with Toronto.

In other words, maybe tonight’s not the time to test out that Jaromir Jagr-Colton Orr penalty killing unit you’ve all been pining for.

In other news, the Post is reporting that team may be in discussions with Nashville about shipping off Aaron Ward or Karel Rachunek in return for Josef Vasicek. A Ward deal to the Predators is something that’s been floating around for a couple of days, although in all honesty, I never heard who for. I know there are plenty of you out there that would prefer to see Rachunek shipped off first. But let’s just say that all the deficiencies that you see in Rachunek’s game are the ones that Nashville’s scouts see as well.

Anyway, I’m not saying one is more likely than the other. But it helps explain why the team might have to consider parting with Ward, who, while hardly perfect, has been better than others thus far.

More from the morning skate later…

  1. Maybe I am in the minority, but I actually like both Rachunek and Ward. Ward has battled thru injuries this season and has hardly missed a shift. ok, maybe one game.
Rachunek has been pretty solid and he is one of the Dmen we need, who isnt afraid of shooting the puck. Remember Jagr tipped his shot for the 1st goal vs Philly.

I understand someone needs to go to improve this team and the Wards, Hossa’s and Hall’s arnt going to bring much improvement.

  2. can they send *both* Ward and Rachunek to Nashville for Vasicek? Not that I’m dying to see Vasicek in blue, but I’d be glad to see some dreck headed out of town.

  3. Reports on Vasicek, he’s been playing as a top 6 fwd with injuries to Arnott and a few other guys…Has good size…Not sure if this is the type of player that solves our need for a second line center? I’m not a big fan of A.Ward but I don’t see much reason for this deal..

I would prefer for a rent a player type but it seems the asking price for those type of players are quite high at this point

  4. I don’t know much about Vasicek so I’m not sure about the trade, if it makes sense. But my feeling is that recently Ward is playing worse and worse but Rachunek is improving a lot from game to game. So, I’d rather see Ward shipped, not Rachunek. Please note that Karel wasn’t playing in the NHL last season so he had to adjust to new rules. He’s getting better and better. He’s useful in PP (already few goals tipped from his shots) his contract is lower than Ward’s. No doubt I’d not trade Rachunek.

  5. I’m getting dejavu here…large foward not living up to potential, Nashville Predators…sounds a bit too much like ADAM HALL. No thanks, unless it’s Malik, Ozolinsh or Kaspar going the other way, nope. Forget it. Besides, this team does NOT need another third-line center, which is what Vasicek is. If he isn’t, then why has he been averaging about 10 minutes a game? And if it’s because he’s injured, then enough said. I say if Nash. wants Ward, then give him up for a draft pick. Then package Rachuneck with Immonen, Hall and another quality prospect for a young, scoring center already proven in the NHL…Perhaps more disturbing are the Smolinski-Cullimore-Tkachuck rumors spewing from Brooksie’s pie hole…and his assertion that Garth Snow CALLED the Rangers to inquire if they’d put Kaspar on waivers(so a team in their conference could get him for half price). He definitly took a few too many pucks to the dome…

  6. i wouldn’t mind seeing Ward go….

especially if it means that we’d be saying hello to Thomas Pock a little more with a possible Ivan Baranka in the mix?

    AZ

  7. this is addition by subtraction. Sure I’d rather see Malik go but I would trade any of our vet defense just to free up room for Pock and some other rookies D’s to come up.

  8. Anthony (Abev) on

Sam, You never heard “who for” because it never has been said aloud. The trade rumor exists in only one man’s head.

  9. If they move Ward, then I would expect they’d look at bringing in another defenseman from somewhere else. They haven’t shown enough confidence in Pock, plus they already waived Kasparaitis, so it’s unclear who’d they would end up with.

If it’s someone like Cullimore, then I think I’d rather have Ward.

The bottom line for me is that the grass is not always greener on the other side, and trading guys you don’t like just to get them off the team will often times bring in new guys that you might like even less.

Knowing Larry, this is all BS.

I read his article as if they are good fiction rather than good reporting.

C’mon Sam, call out Larry on his sources. You’re a REAL reporter, find out what the real news is.

  11. Doodie Machetto on

BTW, I wouldn’t mind Smolinski, but only if we could get him on the cheap and without Cullimore.

Even if we had to take Cullimore, I *might* be OK with it if we can get them both on the SUPER cheap, like Hall and Hossa, or something of that nature. No prospects, none of our better players, no picks.

  12. gonna need a. ward come playoff time and he’s only got one more year on his deal. if he is available teams are going to be knocking down our door to get him. i rather not move the guy. and i’ll take boyes over vasicek any day

  13. Aaron Ward shouldn’t be going anywhere. Not that he’s a great defenseman, but he’s steadier than Malik and there is no way Sather gives the defense over to Girardi, Pock, Tyutin, Rachunek without a veteran back there like Ward.

Although Ward isn’t my favorite player on the team, I trust him back there and he plays every game.

Joseph Vasichek is not the player we need. He’s another Euro who doesn’t use his body to hit people. To me, he’s another Hossa.

  14. let me put this another way. If Aaron Ward is traded to anyone, we better get back multiple picks. Two 2nd rounders would do or a late 1st round pick.

  15. a casual observer on

If you are gonna trade A. Ward, you better get a young 2nd line center with good upside.

  16. I hate that “Euro”/”North American” crap. It’s not true. There are plenty of Europeans who play physical and plenty of North Americans who are soft.

The reason why Vasicek is such a poor choice is because he isn’t filling any of our holes. The way I see it, there are three:

    1) Second line center
    2) A 1-2 defenseman
    3) some Size on the wing

#2 isn’t going to be addressed through a trade, just when Marc Staal is ready. #3 isn’t a pressing concern and can be handled easily from the farm club by next year (Byers). Therefore, the only trade that is even remotely beneficial to us this season is a 2nd line center. Vasicek isn’t that, so he’s useless unless we use him as a salary dump for Malik and/or Kaspar.

  17. I can really see how they would be interested in his WHOPPING 9 pts. Maybe they can do a Vasicek-Hossa straight up swap. Hossa is a Slovak and Vasicek is a Czech. Our team is better suited for Czechs than Slovaks. Although, I don’t want Jagr to get another Czech he can play favorites with.

  18. “let me put this another way. If Aaron Ward is traded to anyone, we better get back multiple picks. Two 2nd rounders would do or a late 1st round pick.”

HAHAHA. You really think he can get that kind of return? He’s worth ONE second rounder, at the most. Even that is being generous.

‘COP’ line offers Rangers an identity
    By SAM WEINMAN
    THE JOURNAL NEWS

Sam, have you decided to go with the “COP” line instead of “OCP”? I don’t think we should be too hasty ’til we know that they are going to be together for more than a game or two…you know Renney.

  20. I don’t even know why we’re discussing these “rumors.” It’s classic Brooks, slow day, make something up to sell some papers BS.

  21. Doodie: I agree we take Larry with a grain of salt. But the Post neither lives nor dies on his articles, seeing as how they’re always buried in the back of the Post’s sports section. We (meaning Rangers and/or hockey in general) only make the back pages if:

    1) a player from the ’94 team gets his # retired
    2) Janet Jones is in legal trouble
    3) Sam elects to go to BU to pursue his PhD.

On Aaron Ward: the man is a Stanley Cup champion. Assuming we go to the dance, I want him on my team.

  22. A. Ward is front page news on NHL.com…
    http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=288200

And he was the Rangers unsung hero in TSN’s power Rankings last week, couldn’t find the link.

I like Aaron Ward, but I also seem him make some bonehead plays and he sometimes resorts to holding if he gets fustrated.

If Rachunek or Ward do get traded, I think they should be for another d-man. Otherwise, if one of our remaining d-men get hurt we could be in trouble.

  23. It’s OPP, not OCP.

Getting rid of Ward without a true 2nd line Center in return would be a complete waste. If this happens, the team will have no character whatsoever, especially with Kaspar already gone.

  24. Doodie Machetto on

Evgeni, we know its OPP. It’s called a play on words. They rhyme, hence the connection.

I didn’t read the article but if they really do call him Farva, that’s incredible.

    Shenanigans?

  25. hockeymanrangers on

I knew this would happen, that we would be risking missing the playoffs due to Renney’s or Sather’s (one of the shmucks) being way to patient with these players. (Hossa Rachunek, Malik and waiting this long for a centermen for Shanny)And like I said midway at the half way mark that this league is way to tight to let these bums find their game. Oh well!! I will be surprised if we get into the palyoffs, especially if they bring some new players at this point, they will have to learn to click with each other. I kind of hope they don’t make the playoffs maybe they will think about getting rid of Renney or Sather???????????

  26. A play on words isn’t replacing one letter with another. And it’s definitely not a play on words involving initials.

  27. I’m no Ward fan but I’d rather see the raccon shipped off rather than Ward. Smolinski would be a better option than some of the other old goat centers available, but that’s not saying much.

To me, he’s another Hossa.””””””””
    …………
    …………
    …………

could not agree more. this is a clear indication that they are not serious about a playoff run. Ward is not Bobby Orr, but he is a solid Dman who most importantly is a Stanley Cup performer and dressing room leader.

Vasicek is just what is said above, plus he is useless in the leadership dept.

If they are going to trade a Dman, it should be that piece of dreck Malik. but once again, it is the Jagr crony factor that hurts this team.

  29. In order from best (top) to worst (bottom)….

    Tyutin
    Ward
    Roszival
    Pock
    Girardi
    Rachunek
    Malik

  30. I agree although Ward is not Bobby Orr he will be very usefull in the Playoffs, provideing we make them. If he is traded it will remind me of the Nimenen trade, not great in the regular season but important in the post season. I think he would have helped use in the playoffs last year.
