I haven’t forgotten about you

Sorry, everyone, for my lack of correspondence. I’m going to be out of pocket for tonight, and I’ll explain more tomorrow.

In the meantime, enjoy the Rangers quest for a return to respectability tonight against the woeful Panthers. Kevin Weekes is in net as Henrik Lundqvist is still fighting the flu.

As Mike Myers used to say on Saturday Night Live, “Talk amongst yourselves….:”

  1. He was hired by a different paper today the Ashbury news so he probably has no time today for the blog..!:)

  2. Sam you need to take care of what is going on your blog !

Didn´t you realize that it caused a lot of trouble in the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Goofy ???:)

I feel you have the duty to pay attention to it :)

  3. No, Nothing that dramatic. Since The Journal News and the Asbury Park Press are both Gannett papers, I’ve always written for both.

It’s nice to be missed, though.

“Out of Pock”: Not bad, 4Rangers..

  4. WHY DID THEY SEND AL DOWN IF LUNDQVIST IS STILL SICK? ID RATHER HIM PLAY THAT WEEKES WHO HAS BEEN HORRIBLE. CHALK UP ANOTHER L BOYS

  5. C’mon — isn’t it obvious? Sam’s centering the #1 line tonight…

    Seriously, hope everything’s okay.

    Todd,

It’s too easy to kick Weekes around. He’s a very solid goalie, and a great number two. It’s our defense that really blows.

  6. Doodie Machetto on

Todd, look at the last post and you’ll see Weekes’ numbers are about equal, and in some cases better than Mike Richter’s. It’s the team in front of Weekes that is the problem, as Chris said.

  7. Comparing Weeks and Richter is insane. Richter won big games. A Cup a World Cup a silver medal.

Weeks makes 2 million to be a backup maybe if he made less the Rangers could swing a trade for some help.

Weeks is vastly overpaid to be a backup.

  8. Has weeks ever stole a game as a Ranger? Richter did it all the time even with the really bad teams and Weeks has played on Ranger teams that are better than the teams after 97 that Richter played on.

  9. Well sometimes in this jaded and cynical age, we are due a Christmas miracle to keep believing in the spirit of the season — something like a star in the East, or singing angels or a Kevin Weekes save.

  10. Doodie Machetto on

tsalad, I posted something to this effect in the other thread, but I’ll reformat the information to make it a little easier for you to understand.

Richter never stole anything except an opportunity to pick up Patrick Roy when he was an UFA.

The World Cup and Olympics are:

    1) not an NHL season
    2) short
    3) have all-star teams in front of the goalies

Richter had 1, count it, 1 good season, 93-94. After that he was just average. Even his numbers that season weren’t all that impressive- 2.54 .910.

Then you say the teams in front of him were bad. Well, let’s look at the teams Weekes had in front of him in his career(where he had at least 40 GP):

    2000-01 Tampa Bay 24-47-6-5 59 pts, 14th East, 29th NHL
2002-03 Carolina 22-43-11-6 61 pts, last in the NHL
    2003-04 Carolina 28-34-14-6 76 pts, 10th East, T-19 NHL (best year of his career 2.33 .912 6 SOs)

So don’t give me that winning teams argument. His numbers last year were about Richter’s and his career averages- 2.95, .895 (career average for both Gaa is 2.89, Richter s% is .904 and Weekes is .902).

Get over the nostalgia and deal. Richter wasn’t that good.

  11. Sam-
How came the Panthers are never “woeful” when they play the Rangers? It always seems to go down to the end with them

  12. Doodie – remember that there are a lot less goals scored in the current NHL than 94′. Richter did make the big save – he personally stole a couple of series in 97′ especially re the Devils. He is an icon in the Rangers history. So among most of this audience Weekes does not compate to Richter. That does not mean he is not an adequate backup for the current team.

  13. Go NYR:

It seems to me that most teams “get up” when they play the Rangers and, more importantly, that the Rangers — historically, which is odd — tend to play to the level of their opposition.

Also, I think that the Rangers this year and last tend, early on, to bury a lot of shots straight into the gut of the opposing goalie and that usually allows him to get into his game. I know how hard it is to get a shot, even a bad one, in the NHL and I do hate when the Rangers go the other way and try to get off the perfect shot, but I do get frustrated because so many mediocre goalie’s seem to have career nights against the Rangers.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon, or am I crazy (or an idiot)?

  14. doodie

You have Weeks on your team and I will take Richter who could and did win games all by himself. Don’t see weeks doing that.

Your lack of actual hockey knowledge is kind of amazing. Zubov not good enough for the hall even though his numbers say otherwise and now weeks as good as Richter. Right. Keep sniffing glue. How old are you? Did you see Richter play?

  15. Doodie Machetto on

tsalad: did you miss the games against the Sharks and Ducks this season? How about that game against Florida a week or so ago. He won all three of those by himself. I understand the nostlagia about the franchise player and the fact that he was the goaltender for the cup winning team. But face facts man. He was just average. Brodeur had 1 season where his numbers were worse than Richter’s career best- last season. Richter was just an average starting goaltender.

  16. doodie

I saw Richter win games the Rangers had no business winning. Ever see weeks do that?Weeks plays on a better Ranger team than Richter did after 1997. I said nothing about Weeks prior to the Rangers. Keep trying to fit the pieces in to make your incredibly lame argument.

  17. doodie

I’m not comparing Richter to any other goalie than Weeks. You have Weeks and I will take Richter. Now that you brought it up I would have liked to see Richter on the Devils teams that Marty was good on.

Did you even see Richter play 97 or before?

  18. Wow, great lines for tonight. Ward is centering the number one line while immonen gets shafted to the fourth. Break up the “great” third line of hossa/betts/ward. The team is officially in shambles.

  19. random thought: did anybody see that rock on jagr’s girl’s hand during the pre-game ceremony for him in the last game?? do you think they’re getting married? they would make gorgeous babies!

for tonights game, the rangers need to worry about penalties. i know we all love to watch the rangers fight, but they can’t let other players get inside their head to make them throw the first punch.

lets just hope the defense is sharp so we don’t need to worry as much about weekes.

  20. It would be nice if these clowns showed some sense of urgency. They all look like they are in slow motion.

  21. I bet Sam’s on one of those Florida golf course ;)

Meanwhile, I’m convinced Renney uses a Magic 8 Ball or some other random form of decision to craft his lines.

  22. Excuse me, but I heard the Rangers might have a big, strong man on their third line tonight. Any truth to this? How can I know for sure?

  23. Well. Look at that. I hope you guys like Brad Isbister, because we’re now officially stuck with him for the rest of our lives.

I guess the bright side is that he is a big, strong man.

  24. bad reffing, and the rangers are embellishing a lot out there, i write about it in my blog. (click my name)

kaspar just threw his head back. Tsk Tsk.

  25. i was thinking the same thing. kiss of death he’ll be on the second line for the rest of the year. interesting that he gets pp time but dawes, callahan never even got a sniff. guess when your a veteran pro hockey player whether you suck or not your entitled to playing time for the new york rangers.

  26. Weekes is a very solid goalie, hate to pull out the race card here but you have to look at the facts, it seems Weekes doesnt get credit he deserves for being an outstanding athlete and a very solid goalie. Is it possible this is due to his race??? I think so.

  27. Brad isbister just guaranteed himself a job for the rest of the year, and guaranteed Callahan and Dawes 5 more months in Hartford.

  28. Hey does anyone else find it funny that they took an open shot on the powerplay and they scored, while they always pass when they have open lanes when the clock isnt under 5 seconds???

  29. Joe, talking about Isbister on the powerplay – “Yeah, well they brought him up to see what he can do, so lets see what he can do…”

What about Dawes, Cally, Immonen, Pock?

  30. giving up a 2 goal lead to a bad team is inexcusable. btw, anyone else notice the rags have been giving up goals in pairs the past few games….lots of goals within 30 seconds of each other.

  31. The sad thing is that Isbister looked better than Hall!

Weekes should be ashamed of himself on the 3rd Panther goal. He must have been on his knees for 10-15 sec. UGH!

  32. annoyedrangersfan on

Renney is a joke… Line combos are awful. Rachunek should not be in the lineup let alone on the first power play unit. How bout cullen or prucha in his place. Weekes is a minor league goaltender, can we please bring up valiquette. Hossa and Adam Hall are competing for least impressive ranger. I believe Hossa is in the lead

  33. I felt the Rangers played MUCH better in this game than the previous 10 or so. Despite the result, I dont think they played that poorly at all.

  34. Nice give away by jagr on the 2nd goal. they always choose to keep the puck in the defensive zone when they should just get it out. The Eurepean crap cost them…..

Joke, Jagr is great but he is good for 1 bad giveaway every game…..

Weekes could not shut out a college team……….

  35. HEY RICH
Get a life! You are blaming Weekes for Prucha being an idiot?? You are blaming Weekes for our Defense allowing guys to march in front of the net? Get a freakin life man

  36. I’m sorry, goal or no goal, isbister should not have been on the ice in the final minute! And how about scoring a bit more on the power play, thanks.

    Finish…

  37. “4 more Alex. remember, Renney said to Sam that he would get canned if he lost 8 in a row.”

if he was serious then he is an arrogant SOB because much better coaches than him wouldn’t last 6 straight losses.

Isbister threw zero hits, wow this guy is really hungry to be in NHL…

  38. i hate when people take out the race card when it comes to weekes. they never assume it has anything to do with his ACTUAL PLAY. go look at his stats as a ranger. he’s one of the worst goalies if not THE worst goalie in the league. black green purple i don’t give a crap STOP THE PUCK AND STOP LEAVING RIDICULOUS BEER LEAGUE REBOUNDS IN FRONT ON THE DAMN NET

  39. prucha stood up for his teammate….someone got tackled in front, and prucha was pulling him off his teammate. you guys complain when they dont stick up for each other and complain when they do

  40. See Isbister is much better then Orr. Orr cannot skate you cannot play hockey if you cannot keep up with the action. I am not saying Isbister is anything but at least he is in the same zone as the puck..

Rachunek gets numerous shots blocked, Pock looked much better then him………….

Kaspar is almost invisible out there….

  41. Prucha was being an idiot? For being the only fearless Ranger that tried to help out and stand up for his teammate and take punches to the face by 2 players at the same time trying to draw a penalty?

  42. Actually I thought Weekes wasnt bad at all, i mean, Olesz’s goal was a beauty, but the forward who picked him up on the rush (betts or ward) released him and allowed him to goto the front, as a goalie you need your team in front of you to clear those pucks away, or at least stay with the guys on the rush, pock was at fault on the first goal just standing around (im ok with it, learning experience, i just hope he doesnt get sent to the salt mines because of it) and the 2nd goal was a turnover by Jagr, if you can deal with Jagrs pros, then you gotta deal with his cons, he does that.

    *shrugs*

not sure how you can fault Weekes on any of the goals.

  43. Nakedjoe-
went back on tivo you are right! if that was a penalty onPrucha it should have been a penalty on the guy with Immonen in a headlock

  44. Thank god my finals have been over for a week. I would’ve failed them out of spite for the Rangers sucking so much lately.

  45. Pruchas call was bogus, I dont see how that was the only call, shoulda been offsetting minors for sure.

As the leader of the fire Renney campaign, I cant fault Renney on this one, the team played better, and the line combinations he used actually sorta made sense to me. Not sure what more you want….besides the win of course.

  46. Inferno-We want the kids to play. We have a ton of wasted young talent 100 miles away and we get washed up players like Isbister and guys who have 5 goals in 3 years like Hollweg, Hossa, Betts, Orr, Ward and i think im missing someone

  47. how about not fading in the 3rd, not blowing a 2 goal lead, and taking more advantage of many PP opportunities.

  48. Inferno, Rangers were handed tons of PP time and failed to do anything, the blame goes to the coach for this one. The coach once again is overplaying his big name players and no big name is getting punished for anything.

  49. annoyedrangersfan on

How about renney ever benching anyone who plays hoprrible? Never does. The guy has no teeth and never seems to discipline his players. I know the rangers have some defensive glitches but Weekes NEVER EVER EVER comes up big. In fact he normally comes up small. Not a race issue either, thats just a cop out. He just simply is not that good.

  50. “Alex, Renney is not responsible for the Rangers passing 9 times before getting a shot on a 5-3″

this happens every game, he is the coach, who else is responsible for it?

  51. Get rid of Ward on D and Kasparitis

SIGN LEETCH and spark these clowns!!!

    Renney sucks

TO MANY penalties every year since KEENAN left..

Lucky to make playoffs this year..

  52. forgot hall inferno apparently we have to pay nhl prices to watch a team full of over the hill tweeners and like 4 or 5 good players. we are being ripped off big time. at least back in the day when we were getting killed for years we had nhl players they just didn’t care lol. now im paying a fortune to watch jason ward on the top line?!?!?! GIVE ME A BREAK

  53. Here are a few things i have learned about Renney:
    He doesnt care about talent
If you hustle you are on the team no matter the results
    He doesnt play young players
He is scared to yell at Jagr when he does dumb things
Renney has his “Tom’s boys” who play every game and it doesnt matter if they play well.

  54. “”””””“Alex, Renney is not responsible for the Rangers passing 9 times before getting a shot on a 5-3â€?””””””

yes, he is because Jagr told Renney it was “stupid” to shoot from the point, and Renney caved and said OK, do it your way.

  55. We can say “fire Renney” 100000000 times, but it doesnt matter. Jim Dolan is an idiot. He cant run his company or hissports teams.Proof that we are stuck with Renney is Isiah Thomas

  56. 4Rangers- Renney has no control over that. They have open shots all day on 5-3 powerplays but they refuse to shoot. He is not on the ice, oh and if what you say is true, Why does Jagr usually play the point with Shanahan on 5-3s?? For fun?

  57. Kovy. Ward scored a goal bro, your argument against him tonight just doesnt work for me. Actually I thought the Rangers tried some interesting new alignments, and while they didnt score a goal, I saw some decent movement and such. You cant throw guys together once, and expect them to immediately click everytime, sometimes they need a game or 2 to figure each other out. I especially liked the 5 on 3 combination of cullen straka shanny hall and jagr.

To me thats how i would always run my 5 on 3’s.

  58. don’t worry. Renney won’t miss a paycheck. the worst that would happen is that he goes back to personnel director, and some other Sather puppet will take the other end of the walkie talkie.

  59. The only way MSG fires coaches is if GMs take the bench. Would we b e better off with Glen back there?

  60. what I said is documented by several reporters. Jagr wants no one to shoot from the point, but it’s different when he’s there of course.

he has plenty of control over it. by simply saying to all of them, if you pass up an open shot from the point, you will sit next time.

  61. so since he scored a fluke goal tonight his first since OCTOBER!!!! he’s good? no no no that does not do it for me come on inferno he’s a TWEENER always has been always will be except under tom renney who stills sees the horse from the WJC’s 10 years ago

  62. I had to come back from the dead to comment on the two most moronic statements I’ve ever heard:

You guys and another Mensa member Wildcard should be on a word quota, not only here, but in life. You deserve the team as presently constituted. Enjoy.

  63. Its not just point shots man. They need to get shots from anywhere they can whether it be in the slot , down low or from the points, it doesnt make a difference, they need to get pucks on net and get rebounds on 5-3s

  64. “”he only way MSG fires coaches is if GMs take the bench. Would we b e better off with Glen back there?””

Sather already tried that once, and the fans wanted to lynch him. he would not dare subject himself to the public scrutiny that he got in ’04, when he was a pariah after failing both in the front office, AND on the bench too.

  65. The worst post ever:

  66. GO NYR: If you were being sarcastic, I apologize. You hid it well. I’m betting my life that Doody wasn’t being sarcastic.

  67. Kovy, perhaps he is a tweener, but, for arguments sake, isnt it possible that he is a decent player, who is being held down by his inept linemates?

    just a thought.

  68. If i were Tom Renney i would take the Herb Brooks approach. Suicides till you die. After the fans left id march em out and be there till midnight if i had to

  69. I think thats the point though isnt it? the point of putting up “lesser” players with Jagr, while it may hurt his production somewhat, he is great enough to overcome that with his raw ability. whereas maybe making a more potent 2nd line with Nylander straka and jagr might make the team far more formidable.

    Just a thought.

  70. inferno ive been posting with you a long time so i KNOW that YOU”VE seen enough of jason ward to know he’s a fourth liner AT BEST on a bad team. nothing more nothing less. just like his two linemates hossa and betts

  71. I THINK I’M GOING TO “KISS THE BOWL” AS RANGERS DO…
WTF WAS THAT??? THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SYSTEM IN OUR GAME…

  72. Yeah, JWard is a #1 center == sure. Nice work Tom you freakin genius. I don’t care that the guy scored a goal so soft my grandmother could have stopped it. JWard is NOT a #1 center. Can someone please b*tchslap Renney for a while,,,,,please?

Doodie — you were on a roll man, until you said that Richter was an average goalie. How old are you – did you ever see him play?

Happy Holidays indeed. Tom Renney is my personal Grinch

  73. Man that’s as bad as a loss as you can get. The Panthers tried to hand the Rangers the game in the first, but the pp was brutal pretty much all night. It’s funny that it was Renney’s boys that undid the game. Betts had Gratton covered then released him just a second before Gratton scored, and Ward on the third goal left Olesz all alone. Dave Maloney kept mentioned Weekes’ lack of rebound control all game and it cost em in the end. That Jagr giveaway and Ward on the top line were just two more frustrating things in a bad night.

  74. Guys, as much as I’m not a big fan of Weekes, the only alternatives were to start a barfing Lundqvist or call up Valiquette. Montoya, unless he’s improved 100 percent from last season, is a LONG way off from being an NHL backup, much less a starter. In fact, I’d say he’s a season away from being where Jessiman is right now, which is a first-round bust. The guy is streaky with a capital “S” in the AHL; the NHLers would light him up like a Christmas tree.

On the Weekes-Richter comparisson, Richter was a FRANCHISE goalie and, were it not for six years of mishandling and piss-poor veteran-laden Ranger squads, could have found himself with many more accolades than a simple cup ring. Weekes, on the otherhand, is a perfectly serviceable BACKUP goalie, who will never be more. In disagreed with him being signed as a starter, but have no problem with him starting 25-30 games a year until Lundqvist is ready to take on a greater role(i.e. next season).

As for Renney(and his “firing”), dream on, pesimists. With a playoff appearance last season, he’s got insurance until at least until next season, if not more. Mind you, the last coach fired by this team was Trottier, and that was as he was guiding it to a .476 winning percentage. Big Tom keeps them over .500 and playoff bound, don’t expect a change, IMO.

On the Renney note, I must confess, I’m beyond perplexed by some of the decissions being made. While Isbister IS a better choice than Orr, the fact that Orr is in to begin with is baffling. Ward as a first-line center is every bit as stupifying, IMO. If anything, I’d think Prucha would slip to center between Straka and Jagr, or at least Straka between Jags and Shanny.

The good news: Pock with 20 minutes. Perhaps that’s a sign of good things to come. Perhaps this means he’s finally broke the youth curse this team seems to have.

  75. this article by Dubi of Blueshirt Bulletin is so good it bears posting here, saying what many of us have lamented.

    ………………..

    Resurrection Boulevard

In 1998-99, it was Brent Fedyk, with four goals and six assists in his last 67 games in the NHL. In 1999-2000, it was Kevin Hatcher in his penultimate NHL season. In 2000-01, it was Jeff Toms, Jeff Ulmer, Alexei Gusarov, et.al. In 2001-02, Zdeno Cigar, Dave Karpa, Igor Ulanov, Andreas Johansson. In 2002-03, Ted Donato played his next to last NHL season as a Ranger. And in 2003-04, Boris Mironov closed out his career, another ineffective Ranger veteran. Before that, there was Pat Flatley, Tim Sweeney, Bruce Driver — even some big names like Jari Kurri, Kevin Stevens, Theo Fleury, and even Gretzky and Messier, all playing their waning days as Rangers, shadows of their former selves. And no, we haven’t forgotten the likes of Malakhov and Kamensky — there is just so much room for fond reminiscences such as these.

Over those same years, the Rangers let the likes of Sergei Zubov, Alexei Kovalev, Marc Savard, Kim Johnsson, Mike Knuble, Mike York, and Marek Zidilicky slip away when they were still young, to go on and record their best seasons elsewhere. And they let numerous promising young players wither on the vine behind a host of over the hill veterans who management thought they could resurrect, these young prospects ultimately never amounting to much — we’ll never know what might have happened if they had been handled properly.

Has Broadway become Resurrection Boulevard again for the Rangers? Brad Isbister may not seem like a big deal right now — if he only replaces Colton Orr and can recapture some of his modest NHL success of the past, then he’s worth a look, no? No! He’ll come up hungry with something to prove, bang bodies for a few games, maybe get some breaks on the score sheet, and that will give him a free ride for at least the rest of the season while some young prospect remains in Hartford, “not ready yet” for the NHL.

We’ve heard this song before, even to some extent with other veterans this season, who have gotten long looks while failing to recapture their past successes while younger players plummet down the depth chart, some of them eventually landing in Hartford. We know where this road leads. We don’t want to go down that road again. Brad Isbister may not amount to a hill of beans as an important issue, but he is already a symbol of a culture that was supposed to have changed last year, a culture that once again favors underachieving veterans and no-upside retreads over hungry young prospects.

The Rangers head into Florida tonight to start a four-game road trip with illness and injury still causing roster turmoil (see today’s newspaper reports in the News, Newsday, Post, and Sam Weinman in the Asbury Park Press.

  76. When will you people get it through your heads that there is not one kid in Hartford decent enough to play in the NHL today. Not one. The kids Sather received in the Great Purge are turning out to be mediocre 3rd line talent. The Rangers will never have homegrown talent populate the top line , possibly even the second line. DOLAN WONT ALLOW IT. Its all about bottom line peeps. You need to win to make money , you need people in the seats to also make money. No quality talent = no winning. No winning = no money. No money equals unhappy Jimmy Dolan. Unhappy Jimmy Dolan means signing FA’s to top dollar. It goes full circle people. They will never be so unsuccessful as to acquire a top 5 pick by finishing in the bottom 5 of the league. They would need to trade for that pick which no one wants to hear about either :” WHY DID YOU TRADE PRUCHA FOR THE 3rd OVER ALL PICK SATHER!! YOU SUCK!!.FIRE SATHER” You have all complained about it for the longest time , but your shortsightedness is foggy your brains up.

Wait until they take whatever cap space they have and sign Pavel Datsyuk…write this down…I will say today , that you will only see one current Wolfpack player in the lineup on opening night next season. I’ll give you a hint…his name rhymes with Sal Jontoya

  77. Power Play combinations on the ice are a coaches responsibility. If a combo is not scoring on the first 3 pp’s on a given night, then the coach must decide to change it up or not. Results after the decision are directly reflective of the coaching choices.
Peter Prucha had 5 or so shots on goal in Florida. He did not score. But he gave himself a better chance to score than Hall,Hossa,Betts,Cullen,etc.. Therefore Prucha should get increased offensive time.
Rosival,Rachuneck, are not clearing the net with body checks. In fairness, they are not getting any body checking help from Ward ,or Betts in the slot either. These 4 are the Rangers biggest deffensive problem. All 4 of them do not sacrafice enough physically in front of their net night in and night out. The coach has to see that. And make changes. Stick checking reminds me of the Dave Maloney days. It sucks. Coach Keenen would have had those stick checking sissies doing laps around the outside of MSG!!

  78. P4B: “When will you people get it through your heads that there is not one kid in Hartford decent enough to play in the NHL today. Not one.”

and you’re qualified to make this statement because?

So you think that Hossa, Betts, JWard, Hall, Orr, Stiffbister are all superior to any of the kids in Hartford?

Of course you’re right that with Doltan in charge the situation probably won’t get any better. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t complain about it. Acceptance of the status quo is akin to tacit approval. Well, I don’t approve of the way this franchise is (mis)managed.

  79. Twin: “So you think that Hossa, Betts, JWard, Hall, Orr, Stiffbister are all superior to any of the kids in Hartford?”

With their current level of skill, all except Orr – absolutely – no doubt.

John M “Stick checking reminds me of the Dave Maloney days. It sucks. Coach Keenen would have had those stick checking sissies doing laps around the outside of MSG!! ”

The refs call everything…these players have no concept of what is a penalty and what isnt…having Center ICe , I am fortunate enough to see alot of hockey , having a cool wife helps , but the refereeing around the league is too inconsistent to give the players any sense of what is allowed and what isnt. It adds to their frustration and hinders their ability to play. This is league wide , I am not using this as a scapegoat for the Rangers.

  80. P4B: “With their current level of skill, all except Orr – absolutely – no doubt.”

again, you’re qualified to make this statement (as well as your last one) because…?

  81. What are you , my biographer?

I’m qualified to state an opinion just like you or anyone else who isnt being detained illegally by the government.

This isnt a message board , lets not treat it like one.

  82. Everyone’s an expert. The fact remains the kids in Hartford have not been given a chance. So how would anyone know what they can or can not do.

Dawes for 6 games and Callahan for 2. Sure that’s enough lets keep the Hossa the Isbister etc etc etc. Nothing ever changes.

  83. As far as winning to make money.

The Rangers have had one playoff round in 7 years and they have made money in every year including the six they didn’t make the playoffs.

The Rangers will make money because fans will gladly pay to see Hossa and Isbister and all the other medicore guys Sather brings in every year. Guys like Billy Tibbetss or Ozolinsh.

  84. I’d say drop Hossa, Betts, Ward, Orr and Malik and give a shot to Hartford youngsters – Dawes, Callahan, Dubinsky, Helminen, Girardi and Baranka. I’d bet they’ll play way better than our useless vets. Let’s face it – we don’t have any rookie in our roster right now! Come on!

  85. P4B:

Just curious about your level of expertise when you make such strong statements like “When will you people get it through your heads that there is not one kid in Hartford decent enough to play in the NHL today. Not one.

If you came back and said that you have seen these kids play a bunch of times and you had some level of knowledge of hockey skill then I might consider your statement more seriously. As it is you’re just parroting Glen Sather.

Or maybe you’re Tom Renney posting here under a screen name?

If it’s just your opinion, then you’re entitled to it, but I think you’re wrong. And, I believe that the kids can’t do any worse than Jason 1-goal-in-25-games Ward and Marcel 2-goals-in-2006 Hossa or any of the other useless vets that Renney insists on shoving down our throats.

  86. Twin: “(…)And, I believe that the kids can’t do any worse than Jason 1-goal-in-25-games Ward and Marcel 2-goals-in-2006 Hossa or any of the other useless vets that Renney insists on shoving down our throats(…)”

    Amen.

  87. “I’d say drop Hossa, Betts, Ward, Orr and Malik and give a shot to Hartford youngsters – Dawes, Callahan, Dubinsky, Helminen, Girardi and Baranka. I’d bet they’ll play way better than our useless vets. Let’s face it – we don’t have any rookie in our roster right now! Come on!”

I would also drop Hall and Isbister

  88. p4b You’re competely lost Ward , Hossa, Betts add zip to the team btw that great first line center Ward was on for all three goals against.

  89. p4B,”””When will you people get it through your heads that there is not one kid in Hartford decent enough to play in the NHL today. Not one. “””””””

what a friggin joke. this guy, this sather jr., is worse than rotten mgmt. in place in the Rangers front office. he SUMMARILY dismisses, and disses, EVERY young player in the Ranger org.

your phony apples and oranges argument falls apart because nobody suggested that the star players, the big names on the Rangers would be replaced. so, therefore, your b.s. about selling tickets goes out the window.

  90. 4Rangers – he is only dissing the players at Hartford not those in juniors. He is also dissing Dolan and since his opinion is that there are no NHL ready players at Hartford that is an indirect slap at Sather and co for their drafts and trades which would hardly make him Sather Jr.

I think you can add Immonen and Pock as well as Hollweg and Orts to the usual list of players who should be replaced by youth.

  91. Doodie Machetto on

From Spector’s Trade Rumours (I’ve put the relevant information in bold)

“PALM BEACH POST/MIAMI HERALD: both report the Florida Panthers continue to shop around for an assistant general manager to assist GM/head coach Jacques Martin. Names that have been mentioned include Blackhawks assistant GM Rick Dudley, former GMs Neil Smith and Mike O’Connell, Boston assistant GM Jeff Gorton and Pittsburgh assistant coach Andre Savard Mike Murphy, the NHL’s vice president of hockey operations, Montreal Canadiens assistant GM Pierre Gauthier and *New York Rangers assistant coach Perry Pearn.* The Herald also noted the Panthers may attempt to move several veteran players, including Gary Roberts, Martin Gelinas and Ed Belfour, if the club is out of playoff contention by the deadline.

Spector’s Note: Hat tip to GJ Berg for the Post link. Martin hopes to hire an assistant in early January. The sooner the better, as Martin will need someone to help him make the right deals if the decision is made to move some veterans by the deadline.”

  92. forget it LI.

“””””””the Rangers will never have homegrown talent populate the top line , possibly even the second line. “””””””””

that doesn’t sound like JUST Hartford to anyone but you and him.

“””””””think you can add Immonen and Pock as well as Hollweg and Orts to the usual list of players who should be replaced by youth.”””””””

if you think Hollweg should be replaced, good luck watching flag football. you really don’t understand hockey at all.

  93. 4Rangers wrote:”what a friggin joke. this guy, this sather jr., is worse than rotten mgmt. in place in the Rangers front office. he SUMMARILY dismisses, and disses, EVERY young player in the Ranger org.”

Yep..short of Staal, Sanguinetti and Montoya, I dont see much more potential out of the current crop. The forwards in Hartford really are not that good. Third line talent tops. But thats OK because like I said , the top two lines will be populated with talent that’s acquired via trade or FA signing…

4Ranger quipped:”your phony apples and oranges argument falls apart because nobody suggested that the star players, the big names on the Rangers would be replaced. so, therefore, your b.s. about selling tickets goes out the window.”

But your star players have to be replaced at some point. Jagr is in his last few years , Straka is ready to retire as is Shanny…Who are you going to replace them with?? Guys that are in their 30’s who know how to play the game.

What I am hearing is that you want to replace your 3rd and 4th line guys with Callahan and Dawes? Because if your not replacing your star players , thats who your replacing.

Ok – so we replaced Orr with Callahan and Ward with Dawes – you think your gonna make the playoffs with them in the lineup? They will barely make them with the current lineup.

Oh – thats OK with you? Ok good. Well guess what , its not OK with Dolan and the Board who oversee Cablevision because their stock is directly affected by it. Do you get it yet?

STF brilliantly posted :”Let’s face it – we don’t have any rookie in our roster right now! Come on!”

    Immonen.

Last year we had two roookies , the team was winning ( the same roster), Lundquist is God was being spraypainted on every NYC blank brick wall and everyone was happy in Rangerland. This year the team struggles , plays streaky hockey and has one rookie on the team and everyone wants to fire Renney, Sather , demote half the team to Hartford and bring up the half of Hartford.

    Your all insane

  94. “”””.short of Staal, Sanguinetti and Montoya,”””

first it was NO ONE. now it’s 3 guys. you are the only insane one spouting crap here. you can’t even be consistent from 1 post to the next.

it has nothing to do with the standings. it has to do with BUILDING a team, not a collection of retread castoffs.

  95. 2 of the 3 I spoke of are not in Hartford

How do you build a team? By acquiring picks right? You want homegrown talent , then you avcquire it through picks. How do you get picks? By either sucking or trading away talent in exchange for those picks , neither of those options are viable for this team in its current state.

When you get done huffing paint , then please respond appropriately

  96. the top teams in the NHL this year are mostly the YOUNGER teams in the league. Ana, Sharks, Buff. are among the youngest teams, with the Sharks being the youngest.

YOU are the lurking, johnny-come-lately who came on here and called everybody insane. 4Q,a.h.

  97. p4B,“When will you people get it through your heads that there is not one kid in Hartford decent enough to play in the NHL today. Not one.

the above is the quote that he specifically mentioned Hartford.

re Hollweg – do you ever think he can get a goal or an assist when he is on the ice. We already are watching flag football even with him in the lineup.

same re Orts – except he’s already 28 – I just think there is a double standard re many of the 3rd and 4th liners on who is considered excess garbage vs untouchable.

Of the current lineup I have zero confidence that anyone but the top line + Shanny (and Maybe PP) can score.

Again keep in mind that I have as right to an opinion as you do and I try to treat you with as much respect as I would like to be treated. (and we do have 1 thing in common – neither of us supports Sather and Co.)

  98. you don’t seem to understand the ROLES that players are supposed to perform in hockey. Hollweg plays the same role that Cam Janssen plays in NJ. a 4th line banger crasher agitator energy guy who lifts his teammates by hustle and muscle.

he is not out there to score goals. if you don’t know that, then you don’t understand hockey.

Calgary’s 4th line has zero goals, all 3 of them. Janssen has zero pts. but apparently you think Lou L. is a moron for having a guy who can’t score. No, Lou knows that he is a role player, and is fulfilling his defined role, just as Hollweg is.

  99. I’ve been following hockey since the 60’s so I really don’t need statements from you indicating my knowledge or lack thereof.

I brought up Hollweg and Orts for a point – that others are criticized for not scoring even if they have other roles on the team while Hollweg gets a free pass. I am well aware of different guys roles on various teams and if you have say 8 guys capable of scoring you can have the other 4 in different roles. Well we have 4 guys who can score and in todays NHL a guy like Hollweg is not as effective.

Janssen plays in a system that takes advantage of his strenghts. Lou L is obviously not a moron.

I don’t know why I bother discussing things with you. If you’re married your wife must really enjoy the way you see things in black or white only.

  100. “”””Janssen plays in a system that takes advantage of his strenghts. “”””””””

then you should be complaining about the Rangers system, not the guy who is doing his job.

  101. li joe and pnb have to be the worst fans in all of sports between the two of them you can’t give even a tiny bit of Hockey knowledge, just the type of fans that Sather loves.

  102. Li joke or is it Joe? Hollweg is a pest that draws other teams players off their games, and when given icetime draws 2-3 penalties, and plays a smart defensive game. On the other hand Hossa and Hall among others add nothing.

  103. re Hollweg – think of a guy like Barnaby who could do what he does plus put points on the board.

I think we’ve beaten this point to death so good night.

  104. You can get a good measure of a player’s worth by asking the question, “If he was waived, would another team pick him up?”.

    Here’s my guess:

    YES:
Jagr, Shanahan, Nylander, Straka, Prucha, Immonen, Cullen, Hollweg, Tyutin, Roszival, Pock, Lundqvist.

    MAYBE:
Hall, Betts, A.Ward, Rachunek, Kasparaitis, Weekes.

    NO:
    J. Ward, Hossa, Malik, Ozolinsh(already passed through).

Ozolinsh is gone. Now it’s time for Ward, Hossa and Malik to go. We have kids in the wings who CAN do a better job than these journeymen. And possibly a few of the “maybes” also.

  105. Baron

good post. Speaking of the post LB is talking about the 4th reunion of Marty R to the Rangers with 1 more year after this on his contract.

I’m not sure of the remaining yrs on peoples contracts or their money but I suspect that Weekes would be picked up if he only has this year remaining.

Cullen with several yrs left at nice dough might not be picked up.
