Greetings on an important day in American history, otherwise known as my 32nd birthday (please, no gifts. Your loyal readership is plenty). Just think, if I was an NHL player, there’d be some yahoo like me in the press box questioning if I was over the hill. Instead I have you at home, questioning if I was dropped on my head often as a small child.
Its personal significance aside, today is a great day for another reason, because it’s the last day of the preseason. Thank heavens. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed this little teaser before the regular season, if only to find my own footing before the long haul. But if you’re at all like me, you’re ready to see some games that count.
With that in mind, still no word on tonight’s line-up, but I hope to have it shortly. I had asked Tom Renney last night what his plans were for this afternoon, and he said that he and his coaching staff would discuss it on the plane. Seeing how the ride was about 20 minutes, I’m guessing they didn’t need much time.
In the meantime, you can preoccupy yourself with “my story in today’s paper”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060930/SPORTS01/609300347/1046/SPORTS about the rare pairing of Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan in last night’s slopfest on the Island. If there was nothing else to be encouraged by, there was that. It’s true, the Rangers remain a staggering 0-for-41 on the power play this preseason, but that pairing at least accounted for some quality opportunities.
Of course, if they still haven’t scored a goal on the PP by this time next week, you all have my permission to panic.
OK, that’s all for now. I’ll update you on the lineups when I have it….
