In the “Whatever you do, don’t trip over the red line” department, Tom Renney will be eschewing his coaching duties tonight so he can watch his team ominously from above the ice surface.
No pressure for the handful of prospects he’ll be scouting, of course. It’s only their season, their futures, and their family name on the line. What’s the worst that can happen, that they fail miserably, are forced to give up the game, and instead take up a meager existence as hockey writers? Actually, when you put it that way, maybe there is a lot of pressure.
Anyway, a couple of pre-game tidbits before we drop the puck:
—Still nothing new on the Jagr front. He still hasn’t been cleared by team doctors, but continues to look strong in practice. Renney’s words were that he was “cautiously optimistic” that the big man will be ready for opening night. Feel free to interpret that anyway you like.
—Kevin Weekes, on the other hand, has made progress, and is likely to play one of the team’s remaining preseason games.
—The team just made a few roster moves. As far as I can tell, there’s nothing earth-shattering, but feel free to disagree:
