Tough to say who’s getting more boos: Tom Poti, who is new to the Islanders after an underwhelming tenure with the Rangers; or Rick DiPietro, who is fresh off signing his head-scratching 15-year-contract.
As far as the loudest cheers, the clear winner was Diane Lozada, who sang the national anthem. The crowd really seemed to enjoy her…..voice.
Other than that, a fairly uneventful first period. The Rangers had their best scoring opportunity when Dwight Helminen whiffed Dave Winfield-style at an open net midway through the period, and Stephen Valiquette helped keep the Islanders off the board when he stopped a Shawn Bates breakaway.
The Rangers are 0-16 in their last three games on the power play. More on that later…
