Are you sure these games don’t count?

So the Rangers are 3-0 so far in the preseason, which I suppose is a more promising sign than being 0-3 and looking like their skates have all been tied together. If you’re bothering to play the game , especially if you’ve “traveled more than a thousand miles just to do so”:, then there’s no harm in trying to look like you know what you’re doing.

Still, there is always a sense of uneasiness about a team that plays TOO well through their exhibition schedule, if for no other reason than it might give them a distorted sense of reality. For instance, what was the last NHL team to go undefeated through the preseason? Exactly. No one remembers (for the record, if you DO remember, perhaps you should be doing this job instead of me).

The preseason is about building your legs, about toying with line combinations, and of course, about deciding who is going to be playing on your team and who is going to be back in the bus leagues. The Rangers are achieving all that through the early going, and for that they should be commended. But let’s not mistake success at this stage for anything more than it is.

Call me a buzz-kill if you must.

Back with more tomorrow when the Rangers face the Islanders at the Garden….

  1. The SJ Sharks went undefeated last year in the preseason, only to have a horrific start to the year. I suppose that proves your point!
